Having owned one (auto exclusive) for 2 years it's perfectly acceptable. You get what you pay for. It did us well, great deep boot for camping and if you have a large dog etc. Fuel economy is not impressive but it's not a hybrid so as to be expected.

The lower spec DACIA are a tad plastic inside. I have a friend who has one of these MG and to be honest it`s like a mid spec 2020 AUDI inside. It rides fine around town, has a fair bit of spec. I think it is an auto box, and pulls well.
Both DACIA and MG are good for the money though. Why pay £30,000 for a MINI?

I also have an MG ZS 2019 excite, at the time when I bought, it was £13,000. No problem whatsoever in the 4 year of ownership. It is a budget car, yes, but what fault is that? Family car is all about practicality and low cost. And MG's sales speaks volume, it is the fastest growing brand in the UK and their revenue jumped over 200% in 2023. Obviously, people that don't own them complains the most.

I just got this car yesterday as a hire for 5 days in Spain, drove 150 today and tomorrow have 450km trip and I don't agree with your review. It drove pretty well, had 1,5 liter and ride wasn't too hard, there was 0 problem with shifting gears and overall it felt fine. Yes its not a Mercedes, but it doesn't cost like one. I saw that in Spain its starts at 17200 Euro and my has the extra interior for 1200 and for 18400 is an amazing car, looks much better than Duster and especially interior and its in a price range of Škoda Fabia, but this is much bigger car, more in size of the Karoq, I'm not suprised people are buying it, its a practical SUV which is not the fastest, but it can manage driving with no issues, just have to downshift from time to time, but even for longer trip is fine, had no issue with seating position as well. Its good car for that price, it looks and drives like 25k Euro car.

A seven year old MG will be worthless anyway, so repair costs are not really a problem. If you are going to pay £1000 for a seven year old MG with 80k in the clock, it's just about disposable motoring. Buy one, it breaks, throw it away and get another one.

Just got back from 1 week rental from Europcar myself with a ZS, I fully concur with what you state!!
The two things that I hated the most with the car were: 1) cannot move the steering wheel in and out means you're close to the wheel and as it happens i could not rest any of my elbows on the central arm rest nor the doors arm rest... how silly. and 2) engine is just too weak with hardly any torque. 1 week rental in Scotland I could not overtake a single car/lorry... frustrating !
The rest of the review is fair and after i realized later how affordable the car is, it made more sense...

Fair enough most of its hidden (under body or on parts that on all cars eventually rust) but it's embarrassing on a year old car (or less) having rust visible at a glance I'd you happen to look at the right angle through the alloys

Hum. Its not bad. Its not brilliant either. I think if you took a look at the one that's in the Dacias post 2022 you'd conclude it's pretty stoneage in comparison but with less bugs. The MG one just needs "dead reckoning" turned off if it decides to reset. The physical controls of the Dacia, especially for ventilation are vastly superior but the comfort, ride and quality of the MG interior is sadly day to Dacias night. The heated seats work better on Dacias, but the blindspot monitoring is garbage.
Reviewers dont get the Dacias with the dodgy gearbox and clutch, I have to be frank here and say we get fobbed off a lot here, the MG is a vastly better more comfortable car than the Dacia.

I've owned one for a year now (actually cancelled my Dacia Duster order for it) and I am beyond happy with it. You get exactly what you pay for and it is definitely more premium than the Duster on the inside. The latest 2024 Duster still looks excessively cheap on the inside with all those hard plastics and the back bench is shockingly thin and uncomfortable. MG any day

Manual gearbox problems surely addressed by opting the auto box. And last time I checked, the Duster only offers a robotized manual on the top spec.
As for the suggestion to consider a Fabia, which in and of itself may well be a good, surely you would then consider saving a lot of cash by considering an MG3 or a Sandero. Even though the Sandero has almost doubled in price since Covid it's still several thousand cheaper than a Fabia.
Lastly, when you talk about driving dynamics and ride comfort, I wonder if the relativity equation isn't a bit skewed. Okay, it's poor compared to significantly more expensive new cars. But how does it compare to the previous generation of its competitors, because those are its price competitors? And then they have no warranty.
Moreover, many buyers are older people, who have driven cars since the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and I wonder how the driving dynamics compare to the average car in the 80s, 90s, and even the 2000s, because such are probably perfectly acceptable to many in the target audience?

I got the Duster automatic, its got a dual clutch type. Just curious at the distinction between a robotized manual and an automatic. There is no manual intervention apart from selecting P R N or D.

Zs is a good package for the money and great interior. But it still looks unbalanced with the arches over the wheels (like a hippo with thin legs). Fifth gear also made this remark a few years ago. I just don’t understand why it’s been designed in this way - It looks odd. I personally prefer the Duster, it’s an awesome package and the new one is amazing.

The duster is better in every single way...
    And id get neither.
Id get a sandero stepway. Its about the same size inside, drives much better than either of those 2, cheaper to buy,..
Unless you want 4x4, which the zs doesnt get , at all, then id go for a suzuki vitara..
When the duster gets its facelift like the sandero did though, then its another story. Wait until the duster gets the renault captur chassis.

I had this car with exact spec, same engine but with automatic for a week as hire car. It was still brand new only a couple of hundred miles on the clock. It was an absolutely shocking experience. On first glance when I received the keys and found it in the hire car carpark it all looked promising from inside and outside too. I was impressed and said "this is actually very decent". But then after a few miles, the comfort, the interior, entertainment, the fuel consumption... everything was shockingly bad and I mean very BAD. And the most annoying thing of all was that there is NO EXTERIOR TEMPERATURE DISPLAY!!! Why? How much would it cost to ad it in? Is it an extra you have to buy? I couldn't believe this is possible in 2023, and I tried to google it and hoped that it is only a setting I need to find. But NO it just doesn't have it. OMG!!! Its actually could be a safety issue, if you don't know the outside temperature so you cant drive accordingly. Please avoid this car big time, if you want a cheap car buy the Duster. It might have less fake carbon fibre and smaller touchscreen, but at least its a honest and well working SUV with a proved off road capability (with a 4x4 spec). FYI this ZS available only FWD...

Please, please do not waste your money on an MG ev. Yes on the surface they are ‘good value’ but the reality in my experience unfortunately is that they are very poorly made, lose a fortune in value even in the first year and the garages that service them are basic and un professional. If you absolutely must buy one don’t buy it new at the very least. I’ve just sold mine in the uk, during my year of ownership I had two steering racks replaced (which was a nightmare because even the garage had to beg to mg to do it the second time) , the doors wouldn’t unlock in the rear, the rear seats when you folded them detached and I would say at least every 03rd time it would not turn on without turning it on an off. I would add something positive though , it was quite nice to drive and also I often got more range out of it in the summer than quoted. I brought it one year ago for £35,500 ( they are now selling them new for £26k believe) and have just sold it for the best offer i could for £19k. I’ve owned lots of cars, they all lose money but nothing like this and I’m not rich so couldn’t afford to keep making this mistake and don’t want anyone else to.

" is certainly more space in the back than in the Duster" No is not. My only concern with any Dacias would be poor safety record but at least Dacia does not pretend to be anything else than an honest work horse. This car screams FAKE!. Dacia engines will out live any MG engine. Check the used cars websites and see how many MGs pass the 100000 miles bench mark.

    Don’t do it.
Two family members have identical ZS Excites in silver and black. They’re both 22 plates and they’ve both had trim fall off. Plus the 1.5 petrol is very slow and noisy and you only get a 5 speed gearbox, the suspension clatters over the bumps. Also, the back seats are cramped with three abreast and so is the boot. Not to mention that re sale values are shocking as they depreciate like it’s falling off a cliff. Just don’t fall into the trap, just buy a used Qashqai or a used Karoq.
