One of the things I liked about this video is that being clear, it shows how much waste is accumulated in such a short amount of time from our fish that it should prompt us to clean our filters more often. Thank you for showing the reality of what happens in our filters.
Great point! Chevy. Looking at the filter after 4-5 days was making me sick. But i had to push the limit and test its capacity. Imagine all this waste going through mechanical filter media. Have a great weekend mate.
Wow! We used to have an aquarium but never had this kind of filter. Great tutorial. I've learned a lot from this video. Next time, we decided to set up a new aquarium I'll try this. Thanks so much for sharing. Big thumbs up! Joined here, friend. Full view!
I like this. These are ideal for bare bottom tanks. Feel like they should give you an extra clip with a suction cup so you can attach it to the side if you use substrate. Perhaps that's a DIY video for you to do bud. 😉 Love the lighting on this tank/video by the way.
Hi Evi, its a 5.2 W pump with 400 L/hr air output. They are pretty big goldies, i feed them once a day for less than a minute and add a handful of floating plants every week to munch on. Appreciate your comment and have a nice weekend.
Hi, Can we use this filter where the GRAVEL has been used at the bottom of the tank ?? as you are showing video for the bare bottom tank, please reply..
Hi Aravali, not in its current state unless you sit it on top of a wide flat rock. Perhaps, modifying the filter would be a good way to go such as attaching the filter to the side glass of tank or adding supporting legs so it could sit above the gravel. Thank you for watching and have a nice weekend.
How come the ones sold on Amazon and Ebay doesn't come with the three suction cups that sticks to the bottom of the fish tank glass and also didn't come with media bio balls in the photo as shown ??
i would maybe suggest not to rinse the filter after you drain it. this to keep the bacteria on the surfaces from dying. also i would suggest to maybe add some kind of surface area inside the poop compartment, maybe a net or some of those filter rock cylinders that provide alot of surface area for bacteria to colonies. also, i think the bacteria that decompose poop are different from the normal aquarium bacteria that we normally want to turn ammonium to NO3( im not sure, im not inform enough to know). this could potentially mean that, this filter could provide a hotspot for that type of bacteria only and so maybe wont compete with resources that the other bacteria needs in your normal aquarium filter. another important part for decomposing poop faster is mineralization. this means we want allot of oxygen to pass threw the poop compartment. i can see that this filter uses an air pump to drive the water flow which seems like a good thing, but i cant tell how much oxygen actually will be able to reach the poop compartment. the ideal here would be to try to get the poop to decompose before it builds up in the filter and therefore it not jamming the water flow of the filter. this could potentially mean 0cleaning necessary if possible. but maybe the area(size) of the filter is too small for it to be ever possible to achieve this goal. maybe they should design something like this but as an external filter instead so that it could be increased in size.
i actualy found some information now backing up what i said. ill copy paste the pasage. Decomposition in water column Decomposition of organic matter occurs in the water column, but much of the particulate organic matter settles to the bottom of a pond. Decomposition is rapid in the layer of flocculent, fresh organic matter that accumulates at the sediment-water interface. Of course, part of this organic matter mixes with the underlying sediment or is covered with new sediment before decomposing. In the water column and surface layer of sediment, there usually are several milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen (aerobic conditions), but at a depth of a few millimeters into the sediment, microbial activity depletes molecular oxygen (anaerobic conditions). Aerobic decomposition completely converts organic compounds to carbon dioxide and water. But, many of the microorganisms that can decompose organic matter anaerobically do not completely convert organic compounds to carbon dioxide and water resulting in a larger amount of organic remains than present where decomposition is aerobic. There are, however, other anaerobic bacteria that can use these partially decomposed organic residues and eventually break them down to carbon dioxide and water, but the process is slow. Thus, decomposition is favored by presence of dissolved oxygen.
Appreciate your detailed comment and in depth analysis. The main reason I added this filter was to scoop all the poop out so I don't have to worry much about cleaning my overhead sump. Even though manufacturers recommend using it for a smaller tank. Now I have a better understanding of the concept behind building this filter and I must agree not enough oxygen will be available to do its job properly as air flow only enables the suction process to draw the poop in to the catching compartment. Really appreciate your valuable input.

Hi Brian, water changes would still be required as per normal. Filter will only trap fish poop and would need maintenance either weekly or fortnightly depending on the bio load of the fish. Appreciate your time
Hey by the way I went to try to find the soil that you mentioned. I've gone through like three different pet stores but they're still selling that same expensive Japanese aquarium soil. I can't even find it and small pet either. what I decided is I'm going to buy plants that can be rooted but I'm going to plant them and terracotta or some kind of pot that allows the routes to go out from the bottom. So they can thrive. I'll be posting a video on my RUclips channel in about 3 weeks
Hi Raju, Happy Fish Turbo Suction Aquarium Fish Waste Filter is the name of filter. I bought it online as it is not available at the stores in Melbourne. Try amazon or ebay and see if your could locate a supplier.
I haven't tested it in a tank with substrate, if the suction cups can hold on to something then I guess it should work the same way as in a barebottom tank.
Hi mate, first time I've seen something like this, thanks for showing! It will be great for my goldfish tank, which I constantly have to remove poop manually, however my tank has fine sand which will be sucked up by this type of filter as well? Liked

Hi Joseph, I haven't tested it in a fry or shrimps tank but if they go under the filter then small fry might get sucked IN. You can still try the filter with slow air pump and closely monitor the pressure it would create.
Not too sure Joseph, there is a possibility it would. I have only tried it in barebottom tank as you need suction cups to keep the filter in place. If you have sand in tank and there are fry too then I would suggest not to take a risk. Investing in a sponge filter would be a good option.

How effective would it work with a large stone substrate?
