- What better way is there to prove that Side Kicks dont work , than to let Icy Mike of Hard2Hurt tell you the exact reason they won't work?! Here are three ways to land more side kicks (yoko geri) from a bladed Karate stance OR a square Muay Thai/Kickboxing stance!!

Do you like side kicks and want to learn way more about them?! I have an online "Seminar Style" course that ends with a 1 on 1 video chat!!
senseiseth.teachable.com/p/sidekicks
Aren't you wasting time with those extra steps? You can shoot a kekomi from a maegeri knee up stance. You turn your hips with your foot in the air, as he advances (first the hips are forward and almost at the end of the maegeri you twist them sideways and your kick is now longer and more brutal, because it becomes kekomi... Anyway, one of my go to combos is maoshi (without setting down your foot) to set up kekomi. How did this side kick don't work thing got started anyway??
@@aerosnail side kicks WORK I'm 6'1 I love side kicks for distance between (I and dtheEnemy

Dude. You just slayed the internet today.
Roberto Capocchi for real lol
Cung Le and Wonderboy have done really well in the octagon with sidekicks.
Sure have, so has Jon Jones and countless others
I've always found muay Thai guys to be the most close minded.. Everything else sux but muay Thai attitude
FesteringCorpse for the people I know personally, I disagree.. but who comments, I may agree with you a liiiittle bit
Side kicks don't work........... for Icy Mike lol
😂😂
Love how the side kick has become a "thing" between you two. I enjoy your colabs together, some of the best on YT👍
Aye, I appreciate the love Bryce!!
Lol

Icy Mike "yEs yOu CaN! 😑"
Byron Vasquez Jr. 😂😂😂 the disrespect
Your helper looks awfully like Icy Mike -but obviously it is not him; he'd never train techniques that don't work...
brio last hahaha that’s the truth
Love the fighting tips, but sensei Seth's charisma is the best part of the channel!
Moderate commentator thanks bud!! too kind 🙏🙏
Your intro music makes me wanna throw kicks that I know that I can’t do.
Hahaha thank Cxdy for that! 😂
Yeah, you can def land some side kicks when unexpected or middle of combinations.
I love sidekicks. One of my favorite ways to throw them is to use a more bladed stance or a philly shell style guard and then use it as a pull counter. When I sparred more regularly, I would lean my head forward just enough to draw the punch and then lean back into that side kick counter. I'll have to remember these set-ups though because they're pretty awesome.
Side kicks are dope!
Coming from a tkd background, a lead leg (defensive) sidekick was my bread and butter in practical use. Untrained fighters on the street don’t expect it, and it allows you to maintain distance, distract an opponent, and sets up a strong reverse punch on the recovery (when your lead foot comes back to the ground, you land in a solid stance; use the “dropping” momentum to throw your punch) if you understand what I’m getting at. Karate guys who actually analyze techniques understand this.
I agree!!
Side kick is the last thing i would tell anyone to use in the street, coming from itf instructor
I would use it in the street
I could, but im terrified of head trauma and hitting pavements for either, so both my feet are firmly on the ground, moving 1000 mph the opposite direction, and i cant assume whoever im teaching has the same ability or temperament, so not saying it dont work, but yeah id place it low on the advice list if were talking street, great videos as always though keep it up!
That’s a totally fair argument!!
This mindset exactly for sidekicks. Can't tell you how many sidekicks I've set up against "sidekicks don't work" people with proper setup disguised as a positional change or a strike with a stance placement change. They also work well when set up from long range with a rushing opponent, but that's a bit harder. Back kicks can work similarly with rushing/retreating opponents as well.

Sidekicks don't work lol I figured he would love sidekicks cuz they are basically cheating I you do it right
Hahaha true
Let's have more specifically focused on developing the side kick including strength and flexibility exercises required and different ways to throw the technique that would be really cool!
Will be releasing full courses on teachable soon 👍
Good stuff Sensei 👍👍
Icy Mike's little squeek of terror at 3:20, I replayed that so many times 😂
Love it when you guys collaborate . Great video too. I'm definitely going to work on this.

Im learning so much from both of you. Thank you Sensei and Icy Mike . OSSU!
Thanks for watching dude! 👏
In this video the difference between these two fighters is that Sensei Seth is tall while Icy Mike is short so there's difference about the range and composition strikes by these gentlemen
I mean yea lol
Love the gentle creative hostility/criticism you gents generate together. Really useful material thanks! 🙏
Kinetic Zen haha creative criticism, I like it 😂

I’ll definitely have to work on one!
These are some of the exact set ups used in sanda, happy to see these techniques being taught

@@SenseiSeth you da man, Seth!

Superfoot fights bladed all the time and sets up the sidekick with a jab and a slide step at the same time. I adopted that style many many years ago.
Man it was really around this stage your channel really took on a bit of a new tone. it's hard to explain but its been really cool the last week, just binging all your videos. Around this particular month of videos it seemed to improve in terms of production quality/editing, seeing you teach at Mike's place, and Mike and you have a good rapport.
When they switch to the side view, it looks like Mike was digitally edited into the scene because of the size difference.
I love these youtube-personality team ups. Now I want to see these two versus Kwon kicker and ginger ninja!
Kidding, but good video
Haha that’d be a blast!!!
Along with hard2hurt, enjoying the content. Fun and informative.
Glad you’ve been enjoying it, had done stuff with him in the past too! You should check it out
So glad you did this cuz im like yo i hit sidekicks all the time. Jab, lil low kick, jab, straight, sidekick or whatever else.
That combo was drilled home to me by coach for my second ammy mma fight.
That’s awesome!! Glad to see it work for you 👏👏
I used a lead leg sidekick in sparring a lot against people who push forward. Works great against low kicks because it looks like your checking the kick and then right when they expect to hit your leg your heel hits their chest.
Love side kicks
I do these all the time, on option 2 you showed I usually vary the timing so it looks like im giving you my back then i just slam that kick as they come in
Niiiice!
good video, looks like both of you have good time making videos together :)
tprnbs yea! For sure. Always a blast
Thanks guys!
Thanks for watching as always Cole!
I like to do a variation on the third one where I jab to raise the guard. Much the same.
Drone Druid nice variation!!
Funny enough!😂 Side kick is one attack that I never miss. My favorite kick
It’s an awesome kick
Nice
🙏
Side kicks are my fav from a defensive position BC if someones being hesitant I can take the stance and look wide open and they rush in and literally run into the kick .
Nice video mate !! They are some great ways of landing a side kick !! I used some myself so I know they work !! . I still want to see some of your katas from your style of karate !! . Keep up the good work mate !! 😎🥊🥋👊
Russell Ramp I got you! 👍
Cheers mate !!
Every time Seth kicks with his giant legs, Mike is super careful not to get anywhere near them :)
Sidekicks absolutely work! I practice 100 of those suckers every single day. It's tiring, great cardio exercise, and you just get good at the damn things. Repetition, it's what it's about. Forget kata.
Domzdream repetition is key 👍
Absolutely! Practice practice!
I really like both of these guys. I really appreciate and respect both of their opinions and expertise. When Seth shows how to do things vs. Mike however it's hard to conceptualize applying it to anyone but my 12 year old son. :-/
Goofing aside though, seriously, a lot of the things Seth does and demonstrates work great for him when he's 6" taller and 50lbs heavier than everyone else in the whole world.
Sensei Seth the side kick kid!
I’ll take that title lol
I like to set up my sidekick so they look like they're starting from a front snap kick kick position the rotation of my feet and my body help with power in my opinion from the rotation of my hips and my back foot
One setup I really like is that I'll swing the chamber around to check a kick, then extend the side kick out while they're bringing their leg back.
Great video got some new tricks to drill now
Hunter Avery I’ll have more coming in the next couple days too
Sensei Seth awesome can’t wait to see what’s next
About 25 years ago I stopped an attacker with one good shot to his solar plexus with a front leg side kick.. Dude was hard charging me with his fists raised. I stopped him right in his tracks with one kick. He walked away clutching his chest and stomach. He later said after feeling that, he sure didn't want to take a chance of feeling it again.
If you use kicks in selfdefense, always kick lower than the belly, so to the legs and the groin. Kicking higher has to much risk in losing your balance and very often you even don't have enough space to make those kicks. So punch high, kick low, I would say. And yes, you can use a side kick then, but better to the groin or knees then.
Whatever is your prerogative 👍👍
I prefer sidekicking the stomach.
love your colabs. Sidekicks do work (ish)
They def work lol
Icy Mike got some leg definition goin on.
Icy mike: side kicks don't work
Roundtree: hold my beer
if you got Icy Mike to admit he did something wrong on the internet you clearly have superpowers and can probably throw fireballs so subscribed because I've always wanted to learn how to throw fireballs
Paradox xodarap that’ll be my next vid, fireballs 😉😂
Dave Leduc throws that first set up, too. However he starts with a low power low calf kick to mask the chambering of his knee.
From what I've seen, it's remarkably effective.
That’s because Dave Leduc and I are equally skilled... 😬😂
@@SenseiSeth would you spar with him?
Just a friendly session, not hardcore Lethwei stuff.
@@SenseiSeth also, what an unexpectedly quick reply!
Totally!
Great video.
You can also land close in on contact by pulling the jab across the body, pivoting into a sidekick to the open ribcage. It's not "catching" the jab as much as sliding up the arm and looping over to trap, USING the contact and the withdrawal to pull them into the kick. Harder to explain than show. Boxers use a similar trap on jabs or straight, but don't have the option of countering with a kick.
Yup, that’s what I said in the original seminar video I posted monday 👍
@@SenseiSeth
Sorry, haven't watched that one yet. Sweet.
I leveled many dudes in sparring and tournaments with my sidekicks. It amazes me those who are unaware of what a powerful kick it really is. I would regularly kick a 150 lb bag off its hooks.
My Taekwondo instructor trained in Muay Thai as well for a while and he said the sidekick was easier to land against guys who fight more square on, but I agree like most kicks a setup is needed.
Cop for 20 years...black belt....fought tons with bad guys...side kicks were my go to...= Side kicks work
Nicee 👍👍
Sensei is learning to WB as well haha
Love your videos man keep up the work! I love the sidekick and I throw it way more then the front push kicks. Do you think it’s okay to only utilize a lead leg sidekick instead of push kicks? or do you think you need both?
I don’t do front leg teeps very often but I throw back leg front kicks allll the time!
Sensei Seth yeah I agree the rear push kick is more comfortable for me with a wide stance. Thanks for your insight🙏🏽
Eric Del Piano sure thing bud!!
Part of the side kick involves a pushing motion with the potential for more damage once technique and range is established. But what do I know besides TKD?
Proving Icy Mike wrong, +1! :) (J/K, love his channel too.)
He’s the man!
Just an observation: Mike's sidekick lands the whole plantar, where as the Karate/TaeKwondo (sidekick) hits the target with the side/edge of the foot. Some practitioners even use the heel to hit the target... This makes a huge difference,,,,
brio last yurp, some prefer bladed, some prefer heel!
Side kick is one of the hardest kicks to learn but has a really high return on investment because they can cover your blind spots to the side
Mike: "Side kicks don't work."
Also Mike: *Throws a flying side kick when the chips are down in USDC* 😂 Best day ever.
I mean... side kicks have helped me not get robbed.
When I first got a martial arts teacher I had been playing soccer for a few years, so I focused on kicking more than punching.
Given I’d rather kick an opponent and it’s my strong suits main game plan is to make someone play my game rather than play theirs. I don’t wanna grapple and don’t wanna box. Side kicks has a LOT of range (if not the most) for a kick. Roundhouse is faster and doesn’t need stance shenanigans to pull off.
But I learned to throw a front side kick to turn around back side kick to keep someone at range.
And that whole practice something 1,000 times vs learn 1,000 things... front side kick, turning back side kick, and roundhouse are the attacks I’ve practiced most just cause of their range.
Personally I like to step my back foot back and pivot it to throw out my front side, then miss it or land it I’m ready to do a second side kick. Plus I have the leg strength of someone who runs a lot and plays soccer. So... rather kick someone and keep em at range than throw hands and grapple given most people are at least a little familiar with both those things.
That moment when I get flash backs to getting sidekicked and sent flying when I sparred when I was a young adult
Honestly, i personally feel safer sidekicking than with roundhouses. I have a greater range without fear of injury (almost tore a ligament with an out of range roundhouse that caused a foot strike). Get those ribs y’all!
I have no clue about kenpo karate but I assume you still kept the hip throws right?, some videos on that would be awesome.
Sure did!! Noted!
@@SenseiSeth Awesome!
I'm not sure why this whole thing was said to begin with seeing as many MMA fighters use sidekicks. Is icy Mike just an MMA troll?
Yes lol
My coach Meaghan says litterally every day her side kick (its so fucking accurate btw) is the reason she won WKU worlds multiple times. The shit is legit.
First time and only time I got hit in the liver was by a side kick, I was like 7 or some shit and it hurt
Oof
and Sanda/sanshou sidekicks???
Gedan barai is an amazing block. It stops body jabs very well and makes your offense stand out. But do not throw it out often there's a reason it's only thrown once in kata.
at most times "blocks" in katas aren't actually blocks per se but strikes, throws, take downs, etc.
This is BAXTER sorry, what are you referring to here?? The turtle shell cover?
@@SenseiSeth 1:54 tho it is more of a seizing then applying it.
This is BAXTER I see, yea I wouldn’t necessarily call it a block haha
@@tprnbs Ik they are used at higher lvl to setup those techniques... But at a fundamental lvl the blocks can be used as just Blocks. I was just speaking in terms of a beginner. That even the most basic form of kata can be valuable. Such as taikyoku 1
one thing my sensei said to use the side if the opponent tries front leg sweep. And you jump back n throw a sidekick. what do u think
Nice! I like it
thxs!!!!
Demetrios Zaferes 👍👍
I, as an old school martial arts practitioner, agree side kicks definitely have their faults. And they almost entirely don't work from a square stance, but I fight from a blated/turned hips stance. And I personally wouldn't use it for anything more than a check to the leg, or a stop kick (I do this all the time and if done right it totally works). It's a hard thing to do correctly but if you do it, then it works. I've seen Anderson Silva do it and other UFC fighters just destroy somebody with it. Including Michelle Waterson. It's all about fighting stance and if you use it correctly. So yes it doesn't work. But it also does.
I’ve said plenty of times how it doesn’t work from a bladed stance! Your hips simply don’t work like that
Mike so salty haha you guys are great
Hahaha thank you! 😂🙏
I hate when he says sidekicks don't work. They are mad effective, and they hurt alot when used correctly. People at my dojo leave me in pain after sparring.
It’s kind of a meme lol
It really is
I have one range! :D
Fun stuff! It'd be great if you could get a better microphone or something. I often have difficulty hearing you, but only on your own channel. Thanks for the content!
Maybe sometime later, can’t really afford anything good rn. Thanks though 👍
Where are you based out of Sensei Seth?
Raleigh, NC!
Icy mike looks like ragnar lothbrok
Bah bah boom bang bang🤣😂
Hahaha precisely
i learned side kicks in muy thai very early on, used them all the time
ppl see me do it and ask me if ive done karate/TKD
That’s really interesting.. side kicks are very hard to pull off from a thai stance. I’m assuming you either use it from your back leg or strictly as a counter from the missed roundhouse as they’re coming back in?
first coach just had us practice them like that, but never had us throw them naked, always stepping with jabs. i got into throwing the back one if ppl had gotten used to the teep
second coach was saekson janjira in dallas, and he would always have ppl turning round kicks/teeps into side kicks
Ryan Bridges nice!!
never had much of an issue throwing it from that stance, but theres way more of a telegraph, so from there i p much only do what you showed above.
only use it as a lead if im bladed
you two would make great Co stars like sitcom style.
Hahaha send me the contract, I’ll sign in a heartbeat
Sensei Seth wish I had that kind of networking profile lol.
here's to a holiday sensei Seth and hard2hurt special coming soon🤞🤞
Renz Davis Hahahah cheers
Sensei Seth I watch both you and Mike frequently. as a matter of fact before my injury (distal bicep rupture) I was incorporating some of the kicks you've posted. #sidekicksdowork ! slightly sidelined but haven't lost my Spirit. just the function of my right arm 😉
Renz Davis hope it heals up soon brother!!
I'm a side kick dude!! 😆
Knee up during sidekicks mike.
Love from captain highnsight
Not knee UP
@@SenseiSeth Sorry, I'm that dumb guy in the comment section that didn't get that you were teaching a different technique 😉
My favourite kick from superfoot
Superfoot has the skills for sure!
It appears that side kicks truly don't work unless they are used in the proper context, i.e. the opponent is (or is going to be) to the side. In the same way, it appears that front kicks truly don't work unless they are used in the proper context, i.e. the opponent is (or is going to be) in front of you. Who would have thought?
Do you ever practice or teach throwing the sidekick from the front stance?
Front stance? Like traditional Kata stance? Or with a stance that is more square?
@@SenseiSeth
Like a front stance facing square to your opponent, like Icy mike fights. I it possible to side kick off the front leg, you just have to roll your hip over as you extend the kick?
Derek VanDenburg I usually find a way to set something up that allows me to pivot beforehand! Otherwise I just throw a front kick. Hips aren’t really designed for that
From a purely street fighting perspective, of course side kicks work? Have you ever heard of the oblique kick dude? that's a side kick, and as someone who has had liements exploded on the spot, I can tell you that unless you're exceedingly tough you're probably done fighting after receiving that kind of injury. Great way to possibly end a fight from range, while focusing on precision over power.
Icy Mike should really watch Stephen Wonderboy Thompson's youtube channel if he doesn't believe in sidekicks....
🤦🏻♂️😂
Or if you aren't playing point scoring and are actually trying to stop an opponent, repeated side kicks to the pelvis are hard to stop and take the piss out of an opponent.
Ok so we know sidekicks work wut ubt axe kicks

Emmanuel Anajao ha! Idk about all that 😅

Sooo.. Sidekicks don't work untill they do? :D I really love the dynamic of you two^^
Haha thanks!
@@SenseiSeth you're welcome:)
Wonderful video looks like David a Goliath
You absolutely can throw a side kick from an orthodox stance. :D
S. Armstrong from either or!
For some reason I have a lot of trouble with a left leg sidekick when I’m in a bladed stance and it feels better from a more squared stance. With my right leg it’s the complete opposite, can only work it from a sideways stance. I suppose I’m just used to going strong side forward in tkd and using a lot of side kicks and rarely using them in Muay Thai where I have an orthodox stance 90% of the time and the lead leg side teep is thrown a little different than a karate or tkd side kick, maybe?
Dan Beck use these ways of blading the opposite foot! That’s the key for sure
@@SenseiSeth either leg can be used for a side kick when in orthodox stance. The key is to pivot the supporting foot at the same time as the kick extends. Ie, your back foot (right foot) may be pointing toward the opponent, and at the point of throwing the left side kick, the right foot pivots 180 degrees so the heel faces the opponent. Same when throwing the right foot from orthodox.
Sensei Seth I tend to do a pivot from toes facing sideways to pointing behind me when I throw them. but I feel a weird, slightly uncomfortable torque in my right knee when I throw them from a bladed orthodox stance. I think the trajectory of my kick is off a bit or something causing the pressure to shift in the wrong direction on my knee. Maybe I’ll get a video of it sometime.
It's called taking a single step forward
Huh? It's a technique like anything else. I've dropped clowns easy with(mid torso) it.What are we saying here? Plenty of fighters like Thompson and Makdessi use it all the time,Cung Le lived by it. This must be just a joke😂
You right 😉
Maybe he doesnt like em because hes less mma more self defense oriented (regular folks) and for a lot of people who haven't trained kicking heavy arts like TKD and shit they lack the leg dexterity so a sidekick is less viable.
It's a good kick otherwise
@@garliconionshallot Actually Brother,You just described ME,LOL. Eclectic systems for street efficiency (Baltimore streets,Hell yeah I had to use them LOL) NEVER had a problem with the kick as a knee smash or as bludgeone to intercept(and sometimes just DROP an attacker). Admittedly I am 240 with very good kick ability and the Boxing/Wing Chun/Kali hand game is on point,so TRUTHFULLY one on one and sometimes two/one haven't been much trouble for me(I KNOW life AND Conflict may not be done with me🙄) But I have also trained many people. One who was a little brother to me and ALWAYS in some "shite"(ladies man AND part time low level drug dealer AND later a GUARDIAN ANGEL😁in B-more) Dude used it several times in "winning" ENCOUNTERS and he was only about 160-170 maybe. I only say that because as he would show me what he did or someone else from the neighborhood would VERY VIVIDLY 😂🤣 tell me I would show him alternatives that too would have worked but it was his "go to" y'know. The other student was less a "student" and more a training partner. I never cared for his "martial mix" of Kenpo/Aikido with a Boxing "sprinkle" ,But being a "Barfly"(We liked strip clubs,No JUDGING 🤣) Dude was in stuff WAY too many times. The Kenpo gave him fast hands and a NICE low/mid side kick. I WATCHED HIM drop a dude in a club that was very ODDLY SHAPED,AS IT WAS "LINEAR" ,VERY,VERY NARROW.ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE STAGE/BAR,SEAT AND "SQUEEZE BY Dick hard guys to get to the"back ladies"🤨. But sure enough here comes his sidekick knocking the dude into me. SORRY FOR RUNNING ON MAN,IM OLD,SKILLED AND HAVE A DOZEN STORIES FROM LIVING POOR/Working Class in "Beautiful B-MORE". SO I definitely feel you on the self-defense systems as opposed to the sport. And none of this is Bragging because as DALTON FROM "ROADHOUSE " STATED;"NOBODY wins a fight".That being,if we can't find another way,as thinking Humans we have lost already. Also, the World is still Good AND EVIL and UNFORTUNATELY Evil May not be DONE with me. Be safe thanks for listening...........MY BROTHERS I AM REALLY SORRY, didn't know I was "talking" so Much 😂🙄...MY BAD.
I taught my oldest son how to kick and use the front and side kick when he was two years old. When he was four I was watching him play in the communal garden when another little boy wanted to take his toy from him. My son brushed him off so the other boy went for his older brother. I was so afraid as I couldn't get to my son to save him in time. When the bigger boy got into range my son executed the side kick with the step in to add power exactly as I taught him. He nearly cut the older boy in two with it and that was the end of the confrontation. My son went back to playing with his toy quite calmly while the big boy needed help from his friends and who were all afraid to approach my son. I was so proud. My son is now 31 years old
I kinda agree and disagree. I have landed them rarely in sparring. But I have landed them. It is a thing and doable. But..... The cons by far out-weigh the pros.
*PROS*
1. Landing a clean sidekick is boner central!
2. Potentially useful as a one off strike for self defence
*CONS*
1. Your stance has to change to a more Karate base to land it and that tells the opponent what ya trying to do
2. As soon as you go side on, you're vulnerable to multiple leg kicks (NOT FUN)
3. You are limited to what you can land after it, as it is hard to follow up with anything of note afterwards
4. The time you spend trying to land a side kick you could of landed 4 more effective leg kicks or snap kicks to the body.
5. The strategy to land sidekicks opens you up to being countered far too easily
6. Anyone experienced will sweep your front leg and use your head as a punchbag
7. Most of the time a sidekick will be telegraphed
8. If you miss with your sidekick, which will be 9 times out of 10 you are wide open for a one punch K.O immediately!
9. Your standing leg may as well have a bright neon sign on it saying destroy me now
10. If your foot is caught, you will be plunged into the abyss and thrown backwards into another dimension.
I'm someone who likes sidekicks. That said, I think only version #1 would really work.
I’ve used all of these for years! They take practice for sure but I wouldn’t declare what’d work and what wouldn’t without testing for yourself!
@@SenseiSeth I'm sure you're right. Again, I love a good side thrust.
