NOTE: Due to issues with my recording software, some of this footage is of a lower quality than I'm comfortable with. Unfortunately I already spent so much time on this review that I couldn't afford to get all new footage and re-edit. I'm very sorry, and I'll be sure to have a very stern talk with the software.
RedMage23 Statistically it would make the most sense since New Leaf given that she's the character that every player always has in their copy of the game and the one that interacts with you when you want to do projects.
Am I the only one that thinks MKWii has the best roster. King Boo, Funky Kong, Dry Bowser (because he actually existed unlike pink gold peach). Idk maybe it's just bias but seriously mkwii's great
Jeriel C MKwii had the best unlock system as well. Get gold in the star and special cup? Get a kart and a character. Get a gold in the leaf and lightning cup? Get a kart and a character. Star the special cup? Get a character. Star the lightning cup? Get a kart. Have Mario galaxy? Unlock Rosalina. Don't have Mario galaxy? Well good luck starring all the nitro cups in 150cc mirror where you can go from 1st to 7th in a matter of seconds...
MKWii was so much more fun than the new ones, even though it's so much less polished and balanced. It was so much less luck-based, at least to me, and that's how I like it.
I LOVE Isabelle. She's the only main character from Animal Crossing that I genuinely felt attachment to. I've loved various villagers, but which ones people ever meet will vary. Main characters, however, are ones that everyone meets. I agree that the character selection is painfully barren.
Nass is Secretly a Pikmin of course, I still would prefer a character like Kamek. But still, baby wario is better than baby rosalina. I really hope mk8d has dlc.
Nintendo: we need to appeal to women more! Also Nintendo: women make lots of babies because they think they’re so great, how about we double the roster with babies?!
Options are always a good thing, i dont disagree here. What i do disagree with is the critism of the lack of item switching. I think most people dont understand how much this can screw the balance and hurt more than help. Lets make a few scenarios: Someone get 3 reds and 3 green in a lucky draw with the green in 1st position: - With the ability to switch items he could fire his reds, overtake his opponents and then immideately have a strong defense item. - Without switching he has to make a choice. Does he fire his greens to get to the reds or does he wait until the next itemboxes, fire his greens then and hope for another item for 2nd place. First has 1 banana in 1st position and a coin on second: - With switching he could try to double up on defense and become even better defended - Without switching he has to take a risk. Does he want to drop his banana to get rid of the coin and try another double item block ? Or will he keep his 1 defense and is vulnerable against 2 single red shells ? A good player is driving against weaker ones. He knows how good he is and just to screw around he stays in the back until he got some good items. - With switching he can keep this good item (like a star, a horn to counter blue shells, or even more stupid a bullet bill for example) in 1 slot, take it all the way to the top and then have a star in 1st place. - Without switching he can do that as well, but since he cant use any item it is a lot harder and nearly impossible to do. [To be fair, the boo which wasnt in mario kart 8 could prevent that, and if you drive against a full lobby it is nearly impossible at this point] A player draws 3 mushrooms in 2nd position (doesnt matter whats in first), a few seconds later is a possible shortcut he can do with those mushrooms. - With switching nothing changes, he takes the shortcut and thats it. - Without switching he is forced to make a choice. Keep the 1st item (maybe he really wants it) and drive the long way, or get rid of it to save a few seconds with a shortcut. Flexibility is NOT a good thing in this case. This would create an even bigger rift between good/mediocre player than it already has because luck is less than a factor than before. And yes, that is a bad thing and would create even more of those "boring races" like you called them where the 1st and 2nd position just drive and cant do anything against each other. And people should stop underestimating game designer. They probably wanted to make it like double dash, platested it, and then realized that without changing half the games items, balance, and other things they simply couldnt bring it back the same way. That said, they could have at least given the option to play with switching rules offline. I understand why they didnt bother with it online, but for me offline modes are always a "do whatever you want" kind of thing. Oh well, maybe next time.
I thought the baby characters were wasted spots too but my kids, ages 4 & 6, enjoy playing those characters. One big difference between the Wii U and Switch version that most people dislike is the smart steering and auto accelerate. When playing the Wii U version it was hard for them to play the game, in the Switch version they normally can place in the top 5. At least those features can be disabled for more experienced players.
To be honest, as someone who never played the series and only peered it from a distance, she actually feels like she fits the mario kart games visually. She seems so happy! I dislike the copies and koopalings by comparison.
Keep the name Mario Kart, cause its iconic and it sells. But if we are gonna get more Nintendo characters ( and I know this isn't Nintendo) but how about Sonic the Hedghog. Just imagine how crazy it would be. I know Sonic has a racing game but still. If not him then I think driving as Pokemon would be cool. Just imagine driving as Mewtwo or Blaziken. Or Lucario
@@HollowedCrow where has Kamek been. Why has he still never been in a Mario Kart game. If he was supposed to be in 64. Also I want Petey Piranha to come back. Cause his design is so wacky and cool. And he needs to be in more games. Also we need Diddy Kong.
Matt Belcher kamet would have a been a favorite, hood squad haha. I feel like at some point within the kart series he could have been a cool addition to the roster to reference 64. Totally agree with you
the thing with the 2 items is that it's not meant to replicate double dash. Mario kart 8 on wii-u doesn't just have 1 item but it also doesn't allow you to pick up a second item. In every other mk game you could drag a defense item behind you AND grab a new block. Since this was missing on wii-u they added a second slot to replicate that functionality. (probably because this was an semi easy technical change to make without breaking a bunch of code) I agree swapping DD style would be a great addition but that's just not what this was supposed to be.
4:03 Remember a game that gave 4 Hoots about some Mario Characters? Mario Kart 7. Shy Guy, Queen Bee, Wiggler, and Lakitu were all added as characters. But everyone hated them.
Pikacraft64 TV Because nobody liked these things as characters to begin with. If they used the Paper Mario partners instead of random enemy XY, you wouldn't see that many people complaining. Also, the Honey Queen. Really, Nintendo? You're putting a random NPC nobody remembers or cares about in Mario Kart, but not Fawful, a character people have been asking for for ages? These "characters" just wasted slots for more beloved and deserving characters. And so do the Baby forms and transformations.
Pikacraft64 TV I didn't hate them like idk how...especially everyone but queen bee...I get it she was random and not popular but the others like shy guy...those are classic characters and are great to have and fit in MK well...they were just made for some reason Nintendo can't add bigger character rosters and those characters replaced some others like waluigi...even though I'm not s huge fan of him it was stupid that he wasn't in MK7.
2:52 I've been playing since it was on the Wii U and I STILL never notice when the anti-grav sections start. Is there some secret to making yourself notice or am I just a stupid head?
Nailed it with the criticisms. Thank you for talking about the stuff nobody else mentioned in their reviews. A last man standing battle mode option and the ability to switch between items are such obvious simple omissions that take so much from the game. For no apparent reason. What the hell Nintendo. The lack of 4 players per Switch in LAN mode and no option to race just one track is like Nintendo didn't even test this thing in a party. The disconnect between being the 1st or 2nd place (almost no items or overtaking), and the rest (a constant massacre) is an actual balance issue that should be addressed, but I doubt it will. Thank you Arlo for taking good effort in these reviews and not rushing/selling out to the hype.
To be fair the lack of 4 players per Switch in local multiplayer is probably to assure smoothness. The Switch can only handle 30fps with 4 players and having that + constant wireless communication would probably not work.
I think I'm the one guy who liked the inclusion of the Koopalings in the new Mario games. As a kid I grew up with Mario 3 and Super Star saga on the GBA and my imagination was captured by those 7 Bowser spawn (or not anymore) and I wondered why they weren't in more Mario games. Now my wish has been granted to levels even I couldn't expect (I mean they're all in Smash Bros) but I see that a lot of people hate them now due to overexposure. Still whenever I see them in a new game I can't help but smile.
I love them too, I grew up with NSMB Wii and the Koopalings were there, I just wish they used ONE character slot that would open up with more options....
Also, something no one seems to bring up: the brutality of the game seems to have vanished. When you fall off a cliff the time it takes to get back on track has shortened, making it easier (plus you don't watch your character fall off the map anymore) and they've added brief immunity to the player once their hit. It kinda makes the game feel easy. Even though it made the game harder and more frustrating, I miss the days when you could get nailed by two items at once.
Arlo's point about the lack of "stock" in battle mode is exactly why I come to this channel. This is the kind of thing only an experienced Nintendo fan can really pick up on. Thanks Arlo!
Ikr, part of the reason you chose a certain character was because of their item; You also had to look out for others because you knew what their item could do. A big piece of strategy is completely gone from the game and personally it's felt a little empty without it ever since ... Granted this could just be me, someone who didn't get to play a Mario Kart until Double Dash, but it's something I've sorely missed.
@VonFirflirch It's a balancing issue they would've had four games to work on by now (all of which had online capabilities), had they not dropped it after a single game.
Mostly the fact that he says visuals are stunning regardless of Mario kart 8(non deluxe) showing almost the same thing. 2:07 he literally explains a stage as if he's talking to a completely different audience. I mean all this detail stuff was appreciated when Mario Kart (non deluxe) released which was years ago.
Even that just seems kind of weird someone who loves to play Nintendo games hasn't even once looked at game play of Mario Kart 8. That and he definitely is tending to the [outside to recent Mario kart games] demographic. Just seems kind of odd.
^ - ^ I agree with most of the things you said in this video Arlo. One thing though, Coins as an actual item for the new Mario Kart games -.- Seriously, Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS really brought Coins right the best way possible. They are not an item, they are just found scattered on the ground of each Course. Super Mario Kart on Super Nintendo and Mario Kart Super Circuit on the GameBoy Advance had Coins, but Coins were even more useful as an item in those games because if you had 0 Coins running into your opponent would cause Spin Outs. Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 that isn't the case, Coins don't cause Spin Outs they just gradually raise your Top Speed just a little that is honestly barely noticeable... Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS did the right thing by scattering Coins on the ground, Mario Kart 8 did that too, but made the mistake of re-introducing Coins as an item, which in many situations is useless. One thing that makes it better in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch over Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U, is the Deluxe Items. Even though they don't have the Item Switch mechanics (really would be perfect for the Nintendo "Switch" version of Mario Kart) the Deluxe Items really offer more protection if you get an item the renders you defenseless against offensive items such as Red Shells, or Green Shell snipes... One thing I really appreciate from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In Mario Kart 8 in general, the items feel way too unbalanced for me, even compared to Mario Kart 7, I've seen people online that I'm racing with get the Starman in 3rd Place, only one rare time, I got Bullet Bill in second place, which I won just because of that, and I posted the Replay on my Miiverse account and said even though that one me the game, that is wack and clearly shows how unbalanced Mario Kart 8 can be... I honestly really agreed with your opinion on all the different variation characters of Mario and Peach. Pink Gold Peach, Golden Metal Mario, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, honestly, just make them different skins for Mario and Peach and add heavy differences to those skins, because it's pretty much the same character :/ Mario Kart 7 also had some weird but cool characters like Wiggler, Honey Queen, had Metal Mario but in the right way possible, and some other really odd but awesome editions that were never in any Mario Kart game... Also, the Koopalings should have all been an alternate skin for Bowser Jr. , just like in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, they should have had Bowser Jr. in Mario Kart 8 on Wii U with all the Koopalings attached to him. Even though these are different characters based on their weight classes they could have made it different. In turn of these useless character slots being taken up that could have been fixed I would have liked Diddy Kong, Para Troopa, Birdo (I guess... Lol...), Peaty Piranha, Funkey Kong, and maybe some other DLC editions like Captain Falcon because we have all these new F Zero stages and only his amiibo Mii Outfit, and Kirby with the edition of the Warp Star Kart would have been really awesome with the Checker Knights Course from Kirby's Air Ride... I'm mainly just happy Dry Bones and Bowser Jr. are back because they should have been in the game from the start c: There are really some things I would have liked better from Mario Kart 8. I feel Mario Kart 8 actually ruined Mario Kart for me... I loved Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Double Dash the most, Mario Kart 64 was my second favorite Mario Kart game, and then honestly, my least favorite is probably Mario Kart 8... A lot of things they did right like being the first Wii U game to have DLC, and having an item that can destroy Blue Shells, but everything else for me felt meh... :/ Sorry about your Mario Kart 8 Battle Mode experience, from what you showed in that story and video of you playing Mario Kart 64 Battle Mode with friends really did make me feel for you and see the nostalgia and completely understand the comparison to both games...:[ Having new Race Courses along with having new Battle Mode Courses would have been a lot more to look forward to for me... I know we have the DLC Race Courses already in the game, but I already have those on my Wii U and I'm not a huge fan of Battle Mode besides the SNES and N64 versions, I really want something new besides the new characters in the game... but whatever .-. I know I sound really negative about Mario Kart 8, a lot of people seem to love and enjoy the game to no end, but out of any Mario Kart game in the franchise, this game completely drew me away from Mario Kart, I usually just spend time playing Smash Bros. (Mostly on Wii U) and the Pokemon games, mainly the new one's like Sun or Y, but sometimes I go back and enjoy the older generations, like Gold, Emerald, Platinum, or White. Don't get me wrong, Mario Kart can bring me back... But ONLY if it's everything new and fresh:'D
PokéGuitaristJake When you talked about mariokart 8 does that include deluxe? Because I feel as if they should be seperate entities. You bring up some very good points about your opinions. I honestly believe that Mario kart 8 deluxe places higher then some games like Mariokart Wii and 7. I also don't like the way coins are handled but see it almost as a balancing if your in first because you have less chances to get protection items from 3rd and 2nd. This still doesn't allow lower places to catch up as easily but still
PokéGuitaristJake I feel bad for writing again so sorry. I think that it would be hard to make a new Mario kart game for awhile, but for now I believe they should use a free DLC model, I think they should add some smaller things Around mentioned and also tweak some things you've mentioned. Honestly I feel they would win back many fans perhaps such as yourself by doing this because they could add things and tweak things and add things mentioned by everyone. Maybe add more characters, tweak some things, add new modes. Another youtube brought up a couple cool ideas, it was a double dash mode that was basically double dash, two characters per kart. This would add the switching mechanic back in. Based off of the fact you want a new game this probably wouldn't win you back but would maybe win other fans back as well
Excellent dissection, Arlo. As you mention, it's bound to be a damn good time simply on merit of the core gameplay continually being some of the best racing action of any series, but there are some legitimate gripes around. I, too, found it immensely frustrating that double items returned with no way to switch between them with ease. If you want the second item, you're forced to immediately waste the item in front of it. It takes out a lot of both the defensive and offensive item strategies that were present in Double Dash, a game that perfected double items many years ago. I'm also sad that - especially with a game like this that excels at house parties - Nintendo seems to be relying too heavily on online play, which has all but killed couch multiplayer. I had the same gripe with Splatoon, I want to be able to have a minimum of 3 friends (up to 7 friends by way of GameCube controllers would be ideal, a la 8-player Smash) able to pop in and play with me with ease while we're all on the couch.
No way dude. I LOVE the Koopalings, and I'd been waiting for them to be in Mario Kart for years! 8 finally delivered and I'm so happy they're in there. It would have been nice to see Diddy or Pauline or E Gadd or even Tatanga instead of the endless babies, but don't deny me my SMB3 baddies.
I don't mind the Koopalings that much, but the babies and metal/powerup characters are just... Unnecessary. They got rid of Daisy for Pink Gold Peach!? Blech. It'd also be nice to get a few more new characters, like... Imagine Paper Mario? I know it's still another Mario clone, but it'd be interesting to see how viewing him from different angles showed different sprites.
Sophisticated Goat they didn't get rid of daisy, but I agree. if you are going to have Mario clones, make them creative like Paper Mario or Shadow Mario from sunshine (if thats what hes called) instead of being covered in metal
Bravely_ Phoenix Well, uh, turns out I'm stupid. I guess I just never see her in races, or maybe deep down, I actually want her to go away... Who really knows? Me? You? Science? Religion? Should I stop getting philosophical? Probably, yes.
The babies are important. They add to the gameplay, because they are classifued as the most lightweight characters. While weight is not AS important anymore since the introduction of Smart Steering, they still serve a purpose as practice characters fir players skilled enough to to turn away from Smart Steering.
Yeah pink gold peach and metal Mario felt like last minute padding when they had no more time left to add actual characters. They were probably the weirdest addition of cones I've seen, especially since weren't not actual Nintendo characters till now. If they appear in Smash I may riot
n64 was my least favorite mk. I hated the change from squares on the ground to 3d cubes that respawn. it wasn't until GameCube til I played again, and didn't love it. so skipped the Wii mk completely.but I love mk8. I still wish the lvls were themed better. an airport.. really?! would be better if all maps were based off of Mario lvls.
Gemma Reece yeah I know this one but he's a cookie addict and has anger issues and sounds weird...Arlo would obviously never get along with him...well Arlo would've nice but he might get torn apart by his new "friend"
Holy heck thank you Arlo for finally mentioning elimination!!! I literally love every elimination game like musical chairs, hot potato and I prefer manhunt over tag etc even anything with some sort of elimination gets me excited...like I'd always pick the elimination mini games in Mario party and I loved smash for stock only etc...and I've been saying this whole time...OPTIONS...adding more options just add everything and makes everyone happy and it's sooooo easy to do...cmon Nintendo add this in an update or else...BLUE SHELL😉 also for the double item part switching would've been better and cool...because the system is called "Switch" and now having a game where you can "switch" items would've been great! Edit: also I'm not saying get rid of the points option as people who like it like that better would miss it and it would be nice every now and then to play points then do it elimination and then back and forth and so on...also at least add a whole new mode called survival or something Nintendo!!! Make it 3 hearts instead of balloons if you really just wanna keep the other modes at points...also like Arlo said let us set the amount of computer players and let us change the length of matches more etc
Oh I forgot that Shine Runners was in DS. It was way different where people had to obtain the most shines as possible (multiple shines on the board) and then it would eliminate the people with the least shines, and then the rest keep playing until only one remains. That's kinda surprising actually.... still more options would be nice but the battle mode is already a blast and so is racing.... and this is someone who already owned Mario Kart 8 with all the DLC.
It's interesting to hear thoughts about this game from the perspective of someone who hasn't played every game in the series to death, as I have. A lot of the issues you cite with this game have been around in the series for a while and it's easy to get kind of desensitized to them after so many games of battle mode being the way it is, items working the way they do, and options being limited the way they are. Good to hear a fresh perspective.
...But the Koopalings are a part of the history. I am almost certain that you already know this, but they were introduced all the way back in Super Mario Bros 3, which was in 1988. Then, they disappeared all of a sudden with no explanation. Now that they have returned from the seemingly inescapable "pit of forgotteness" Nintendo has created, instead of being welcomed, they are greeted with hostility? I know you say that you do not care for them, but you are being hypocritical with this specifically.Other than that, I think this is a good review.
Fawful The Best The main reason I dislike the koopalings so much is because in SMB3, SMW, NSMB WII, NSMB 2, PMCS AND NSMB U, Nintendo uses them as an excuse to not make original boss fights. And in NSMB 2, NSMB U SMW and SMB3 they are all the same boss fights with little differences. Because of this I came to really dislike the koopalings. Also you can't overuse the main protagonist.
Meanwhile sitting here in a corner with mk7 Edit: I didn't expect this to even get over 100 likes, thanks again guys. this is my first comment to even achieve that many likes :,)
Hey, hey, hey lay off the koopalings. Lemmy is MY favorite. Also, I have poured dozens of hours into MK 8 on the Wii U and the Switch, and it's the best Mario Kart I have ever played. My issue is not with you Arlo (you're the best), but reviews in general. After listening to this, I wouldn't want to play with all those negative comments, no matter how small. MK has always been about chaos, leading the race until getting hit on the last lap and ending up last, losing your item to that boo, cursing at the screen, etc. Obviously, everyone has their different taste, but most of the stuff you had gripes with, I was like "meh", or sometimes I wouldn't even have noticed it if you had not mentioned it.
Gewdvibes If they can't get the sprite to work, make it look like he's made of Origami. And while you're at it, how about some other Paper Mario characters that aren't clones? A few partners instead of random enemies or Count Bleck's minions would be great.
That would work well for 2 people but less well for 3 or more players assuming the person who lost their balloons can't play the next the round. As just one example it would go 4 player match (someone loses), 3 player match (someone loses), 2 player match (someone loses) then done. There's not really a surefire way to have a good battle mode as each way to do it causes problems. How it is currently is kinda tedious and encourages ridiculous plays while not really punishing players for losing ballons besides awarding points. A survival mode could make it so that people just hide rather than fighting until the end and most likely the person who was hiding wins unless there's an honor rule that you can't do that. I think it would make more sense though to offer more options to be able to play and let the people playing the game be able to choose if they want a survival mode, timed mode with points, needing to get a certain number of points to win mode, and maybe even other modes but I can't think of any others currently. All that to say there are problems with any kind of battle mode that can be kind of dealt with though none are perfect.
OmegaGaming 759 Isabelle should just stay in her office and only speak when spoken to. The Able Sisters are my favourite animals. But Tom Nook will always be the most recognizable character.
Snaking is one of the few most important reasons that MKDS is my favourite of the series. MKDS seperates the casuals from the men. It makes items less impactful by making skill more important and it drastically heightens the skill ceiling. It's funny that you talk about the inevitability of Blue Shells being unfortunate right after dissing MKDS. In MKDS Blue Shells are dodgeable by a technique called the "Bue Shell Dodge". It's very difficult to do, but besides a lot of skill it requires nothing more than just a drift boost and a drift hop while driving at close to full speed. Though it's not good for casuals because it's very difficult to perform so I guess that this won't sway your opinion on MKDS much.
The one thing I will note is that LAN Play was probably the solution to Arlo's issue with the linked Switch units + TVs at his friend's place. Besides that, solid review.
Seriously... Why wasn't *ROVER* the Animal Crossing representative in Mario Kart 8. His gimmick is literally *ALL ABOUT TRAVELING!* Plus he's always a fun cute cat to talk to.
I think stock/elimination for a group of 12 people is absolutely terrible. Imagine if you could team up with a friend and always win, or focus down the person in first place and completely shut them down? When you look at online communities, and you combine large numbers of people they will behave terribly. They become increasingly toxic if they could force a win for them, or a loss for the person in first. Also 2 items were a thing before, holding an item behind you while you collect an item box, but you can't use that new item till your old one.
12:42. So let me get this strait. You disliked the improved battle mode, hate the Koopalings, you don't like the return of the double item boxes, and one of the best features in your opinion are the return of coins!? COINS! COOOOOINS!? THE WORST PART OF THE ORIGINAL MARIO KART 8 WAS ONE OF THE THINGS YOU LIKED THE BEST!?!? Look I have nothing against your opinion but getting a coin from an item box is just frustrating.
Exobyte no... Plenty people did. In fact if you didn't use the Wii wheel and manual drifting to us you were considered a scrub but that's the best and only way to really play. I never had issues that other people have apparently had.
and that means it's completely fine?? fuck no! I paid 60$ for this on Wii U and was waiting for them to include battle mode, but they rather hold on to it and release it on Switch and call it a new game, that's a dick move. Also other companies make remasters, and sell them cheaper but this is the exact same game with a mediocre battle mode and a few characters thrown in :( If they charged 40$ I wouldn't complain, or if they added a whole new cup, but this is just lazy and greedy :( last year I was even expecting this or Splatoon to be bundled titles, and definitely 1/2 Switch, damn I was naive :(
Nepu-Tech USA Mario kart 8 (Wii U) + DLC pack bundle = $72 Mario kart 8 (Switch) + DLC pack bundle + added characters and karts + actual battle mode + other tweaks = $60 IDK about you, but if 8 deluxe was $40, I would've felt ripped off due to other people getting more content for only $40, while I payed $72 for less.
Nepu-Tech USA I wish people like you would use there brain....do what I did sell the Wii u edition and get the deluxe edition....it's not hard to come up with dude
They could've fixed the dumb Battle mode on Wii U but instead they hold it off to release it on Switch only as a "Deluxe" edition and screw the people who bought the Wii U over. That was a dick move, if it was ANY other company, guess what? we would have the game attached to our Nintendo account and not have to buy it a second time! yet they sell you the game twice and you people eat it up like they're doing you a favor. They even want to charge money for online and they don't even have this basic functionality or voice chat so why am I paying again?? for a 30 year old NES game?? We're getting ripped off open your eyes
The thing about not being able to Switch items like in double dash is that the two items in MK8D are supposed to supplement the mechanic of items from other Mario Kart games. If you got a green shell, and placed it behind you, you have a spot reserved for another item. Mario Kart 8 on Wii U was the first Mario Kart game to go against this, so adding the second item brought back that mechanic.
I keep trying to enjoy Arlo's videos, but he just seems to be at the polar opposite end of the Nintendo gaming spectrum to me. Stuff he complains about I have no issue with, things he thinks games really should have I just dont care about. Perhaps it's because I enjoy games whereas so many of Arlo's videos are just ... tinged with negativity, or that's just my perception. So long Arlo ... I keep trying to enjoy your content, but it just aint happenin.
Just a couple years ago, I don't even know how many years at this point, the koopalings were one of those parts of Mario history we wish they could revisit.
Great review. You're spot on with your critiques, and it's the first time I realized why some things about the game bugged me, mainly the battle mode which is a total spam-fest due to the forced time objective.
Arlo It's okay
Thanks for the video Arlo can't wait to watch it.
Arlo if you tell it off can you film it. I would love to see that
we still love arlo
I speak on behalf of the Arlo community when I say we're all just happy to see a new video from you.
my friend brought his switch with him on an 8 hour bus ride.
we played mario kart for 8 hours straight without getting bored.
Frohgwizard he means playing only balloon battle...
actually pay attention to what he says before you comment next time.
dude i wasn't arguing with him i was commenting on how much i enjoyed the game
Frohgwizard oh. ok.
Frohgwizard lol all you were trying to do was express your love for the game and you get attacked.
I get bored after playing for 5 hours
Because Isabelle is basically the mascot of New Leaf
shes basically the fan favorite, while villager is the real star...
RedMage23 Statistically it would make the most sense since New Leaf given that she's the character that every player always has in their copy of the game and the one that interacts with you when you want to do projects.
She is basically the fu**ng dream of us mankind!
RedMage23 she's my little bitch
Get it? Dog? Girl? Funny joke
In Japan Isabelle/Shizue is amazingly popular. It'd be a sin not to have a character on the level of Picachu in Japan in a game like this.
FINALLY someone agrees that timed Balloon Battle is a travesty.
you’d be surprised.
Balloon battle hasn't been good since they got rid of the microphone
I think the last one to have it was Mario Kart DS
The DS version was epic even against CPUs
@@Real_Furious They could just make the spectators bombs to eliminate other players faster.
“It’s like a total war zone back there”
*Baby Park theme in the background*
Yeah.
Its why I liked GCN and DS baby park the best, new baby park is basically ww2 England.
Am I the only one that thinks MKWii has the best roster. King Boo, Funky Kong, Dry Bowser (because he actually existed unlike pink gold peach). Idk maybe it's just bias but seriously mkwii's great
Agreed. MKWii was my first introduction to Mario Kart. That's why I think it's one of the best.
Jeriel C MkWii was really good, i agree
MK Wii is only missing Shy Guy in the roster, if he was in there it would be the best roster
Jeriel C
MKwii had the best unlock system as well.
I almost don't believe Arlo doesn't own every mario kart game.
Jimmy Turner He doesn't, but he now has the definitive version.
*cough* Double Dash *cough*
HellRay I don't believe it
It's not that I don't believe it, it's that I don't want to believe that our sweet blue muppet baby didn't keep up with all of them.
well I don't believe it.
I LOVE Isabelle. She's the only main character from Animal Crossing that I genuinely felt attachment to. I've loved various villagers, but which ones people ever meet will vary. Main characters, however, are ones that everyone meets. I agree that the character selection is painfully barren.
Nah, Tom Nook is better
Baby Wario would be better than baby Rosalina.
MulletEagle
Yeah. Especially since he's already been in a game before.
Nass is Secretly a Pikmin exactly my point
Yup. Even Baby Donkey Kong would make a little more sense than Baby Rosalina.
Nass is Secretly a Pikmin of course, I still would prefer a character like Kamek. But still, baby wario is better than baby rosalina. I really hope mk8d has dlc.
MulletEagle
I agree Kamek would be cool. I think they could use spinoff characters too. (Like Fawful or something)
" Get hit at the last second and swear a bunch and it's a lot of fun" Mario Kart 8 in a nutshell 😂
No, Mario kart in a nutshell
Arlo brought his TV to a party...
Kyle Netherwood my cousin brings his monitor and ps4 over and just kinda plays that the whole time
It makes no sense why come over if your gonna just be a recluse
Doesn't everyone
I think tabletop mode is cool and pretty useful
Not when the kickstand is complete rubbish on anything that is completely flat.
Once upon a time I was in first place now I'm only falling apart. Nothing I can say a total eclipse of the kart
:)
And now I'm only falling behind XD
And I feel as I just lost my mind!
Big Fat Meanie turn aroundddd your driving in the opposite direction of finish lineeeee
I don't think Nintendo anticipated people bringing a tv with their switch to play with friends. I bet they will factor that in in a future update.
They need to stop adding babies for real...
Nintendo: we need to appeal to women more!
Also Nintendo: women make lots of babies because they think they’re so great, how about we double the roster with babies?!
And metal characters
@@denimchicken104 we hate babies !
@@denimchicken104 not like we can add samus, or a beloved f zero character, or zelda, or fox, or ANYONE ELSE
I'm fine with them. As long as they can make them an option for their adult counterparts, I'm fine
“If you’re still at that stage of life, you enjoy it!!”
Man, I felt that. Never realized how good we had it until it was gone.
"Way more defensive items"
*Laughs in coin*
You know what I would have loved to see?... A playable Yarn Yoshi with his own level
Options are always a good thing, i dont disagree here.
What i do disagree with is the critism of the lack of item switching. I think most people dont understand how much this can screw the balance and hurt more than help.
Lets make a few scenarios:
Someone get 3 reds and 3 green in a lucky draw with the green in 1st position:
- With the ability to switch items he could fire his reds, overtake his opponents and then immideately have a strong defense item.
- Without switching he has to make a choice. Does he fire his greens to get to the reds or does he wait until the next itemboxes, fire his greens then and hope for another item for 2nd place.
First has 1 banana in 1st position and a coin on second:
- With switching he could try to double up on defense and become even better defended
- Without switching he has to take a risk.
[To be fair, the boo which wasnt in mario kart 8 could prevent that, and if you drive against a full lobby it is nearly impossible at this point]
A player draws 3 mushrooms in 2nd position (doesnt matter whats in first), a few seconds later is a possible shortcut he can do with those mushrooms.
Wow, that was a long comment. It's a very well made comment at least!
You have convinced me, my friend. Thanks for your comment.
Wow here’s an Emmy award for the longest comment 🏅
Uhm, none of your item examples can happen in the acutal game, also wouldn't a switch item option make the game a bit too... easy?
Pale Blue item switching is good.
And a great mechanic.
Nintendo please include the K.O.-System baloon battle in a future update
Kiji Unfortunately, they replaced it in Wii for no reason.
Ugur I prefer respawning but options for everyone is always good.
To make this work they just should make the players with no balloons be bombs to make the battle end faster.
Arlo, I am thoroughly convinced that you are an actual muppet. Well done.
Why Isabelle? Because MANY people love her that's why.
Was gonna say, she's basically the official Animal Crossing mascot at this point. She's huge.
To be honest, as someone who never played the series and only peered it from a distance, she actually feels like she fits the mario kart games visually. She seems so happy! I dislike the copies and koopalings by comparison.
realar she's new leaf exclusive, though.
realar
Cause waifu pupper, of course.
The Hylian Sniper Amiibo Festival she was in as well.
Total Eclipse of the Kart, Arlo I can't even....
tell you how proud I am. Great pun
Honestly, if they're going to include Link and Isabelle and the Inklings, they should just make it Smash Kart.
Or Lucario
Matt Belcher Personally i think theres many overlooked characters from mario that have never seen themselves on a kart :(
@@HollowedCrow where has Kamek been.
Totally agree with you
Or just add karting to Smash Bros
the thing with the 2 items is that it's not meant to replicate double dash. Mario kart 8 on wii-u doesn't just have 1 item but it also doesn't allow you to pick up a second item. In every other mk game you could drag a defense item behind you AND grab a new block. Since this was missing on wii-u they added a second slot to replicate that functionality. (probably because this was an semi easy technical change to make without breaking a bunch of code)
I agree swapping DD style would be a great addition but that's just not what this was supposed to be.
"swapping dd style"
I'd see that as something extra
GODDAMIT WHY IS THIS CHANNEL SO GOOD
You complainin'?
Have you ever seen Captain Disillusion?
I don't know what that is, so no.

4:03 Remember a game that gave 4 Hoots about some Mario Characters? Mario Kart 7. Shy Guy, Queen Bee, Wiggler, and Lakitu were all added as characters. But everyone hated them.
They did remove Waluigi to make room for them, though. They went too far ;)
Shy Guy's my main for Mario Kart, and I was always so disappointed that you could only play as him in MKDS if you were a guest in a multiplayer match.
I like shy guy wiggler and lakitu
we love the koopalings in my house, each sibling has their favorite
Same
Roy is clearly superior to all the other characters (except Waluigi and Wario)
Love how you used Double Dash's soundtrack in the background. Double Dash is my all time favorite Mario Kart
2:52 I've been playing since it was on the Wii U and I STILL never notice when the anti-grav sections start. Is there some secret to making yourself notice or am I just a stupid head?
When you run over a blue line and your wheels turn side ways your in anti-gravity
You must be blind to the colour blue.
@@frankegordon326 he means the feel, anti grav and normal grav feels the same.
Dr. Madd I love the kooperlings
They should've been alternative skins for Bowser Jr, like how Yoshi has 9 different colors.
The Koopalings can't be alternative skins, because they have different weight classes.
I love them too, I grew up with NSMB Wii and the Koopalings were there, I just wish they used ONE character slot that would open up with more options....
+Fieke Meowstic It's not too hard to fix that...
I'm still waiting for that "Top 10 Pokemon that look like butts" video
Arlo's point about the lack of "stock" in battle mode is exactly why I come to this channel. This is the kind of thing only an experienced Nintendo fan can really pick up on. Thanks Arlo!
Really wished Double Dash's item system returned in general, not just the double items and switching...but character-specific items as well.
I feel character-specific items in Mario Kart is just a balancing issue waiting to happen, especially now that online play is a big thing.
Three green shells.
@VonFirflirch
It's a balancing issue they would've had four games to work on by now (all of which had online capabilities), had they not dropped it after a single game.
Joeynator3000
Character - specific items were a balance disaster. There was no reason to pick anyone but the Koopas or the Toads.
I like how Arlo makes this review as if its his first time playing a Mario kart
That doesn't make any sense. He was complaining about stuff he missed from older games.
I'm glad the Cookie Monster's rehab went great :)

You're saying you owned a Wii U, but didn't play MK8?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
a lot of people owned the Wii U game sans DLC as well. It's kinda shocking
to be fair, Mario Kart 8 is one of the weakest imo, Super Mario Kart or Super Circuit is where it's at

I'm mainly just happy Dry Bones and Bowser Jr. are back because they should have been in the game from the start c:
There are really some things I would have liked better from Mario Kart 8. :/
Sorry about your Mario Kart 8 Battle Mode experience, from what you showed in that story and video of you playing Mario Kart 64 Battle Mode with friends really did make me feel for you and see the nostalgia and completely understand the comparison to both games...:[
Having new Race Courses along with having new Battle Mode Courses would have been a lot more to look forward to for me...
Average Joe What did he do? Are you mad at him for just typing something? Is it because of its length? You honestly had no reasoning to say that
Mango Who is this comment directed to?
Based off of the fact you want a new game this probably wouldn't win you back but would maybe win other fans back as well
Mango mango are you really that stupid lol

There was even a banana for scale
Kooptroopa The babies actually add game play though, because they add another weight clasd
We need to start a petition to bring back Tatanga
This review is amazing Arlo! You're covering parts of the game nobody else I've heard talk about. Thank you.
I wished they used the anti gravity to make a Mario galaxy-themed course where you drive on small planets and fly around a galaxy
Sophisticated Goat they should just make them.power ups it fighting game style customize d costumes
I love the koopalings. and been wanting them in a game forever. one of the reasons I bought the game
n64 was my least favorite mk.
+FirestoneX the airport is based on a level tho.

Always thought it is impossible that two players can choose the same character in mario kart 64...or am I wrong?

I was really looking forward to playing Kamek on mario kart for the first time. Instead we got baby cat pink gold rosalina
Holy heck thank you Arlo for finally mentioning elimination!!! I literally love every elimination game like musical chairs, hot potato and I prefer manhunt over tag etc even anything with some sort of elimination
gets me excited...like I'd always pick the elimination mini games in Mario party and I loved smash for stock only etc...and I've been saying this whole time...OPTIONS...adding more options just add everything and makes everyone happy and it's sooooo easy to do...cmon Nintendo add this in an update or else...BLUE SHELL😉 also for the double item part switching would've been better and cool...because the system is called "Switch" and now having a game where you can "switch" items would've been great!
Slenderfoxx37 Than you should like Shine Runners from MK DS too.
Jan Ruppel yeah I liked shine runners from Ds as well!
What if we could choose between elimination and points, and maybe even combine the two of them as well?
Oh I forgot that Shine Runners was in DS. It was way different where people had to obtain the most shines as possible (multiple shines on the board) and then it would eliminate the people with the least shines, and then the rest keep playing until only one remains. That's kinda surprising actually.... still more options would be nice but the battle mode is already a blast and so is racing.... and this is someone who already owned Mario Kart 8 with all the DLC.
I loved Shine Runners and it's really sad, that it's not in MK8DX, just because of the elimination...
I absolutely agree about the stock thing in battle mode. it is heartbreaking that it is not at least an option
...But the Koopalings are a part of the history.
Tariq Flood It's because the koopalings are over used.
Thats like saying that mario is overused. Koopalings are almost as much in the stories as mario. You can't just take them out or anything.
If you think so...
Well you also can't overuse staple villians can you? No.
I clicked on this video faster than the Mario Kart ruins friendships!

Welcome to episode 1 of what RUclips recommended me
This will always be my favorite video because Arlo used my footage!!
This comment fits my feelings perfectly! Including the part about Lemmy!
Super Smash Kart for the Switch is looking great.
I hope they re-release a "Deluxe" version on the NX.
....what?
@Anony Mous well I know it was the codename.
I wish they added Ashely and 9 volt from Wario ware
And Fawful
And Paper Mario.
Tge Shiny Ivysaur I don't know how paper mario would work lol he would probably be OP since he has a barely existent hit box
You're an actual genius.
Gewdvibes If they can't get the sprite to work, make it look like he's made of Origami. And while you're at it, how about some other Paper Mario characters that aren't clones? A few partners instead of random enemies or Count Bleck's minions would be great.
Arlo, I think you're the only reviewer who takes in the fact of multiplayer as a huge part of the game.
Arlo, I only started watching you today, but after your Koopalings comment, I am convinced you and I operate on the same brainwaves. I love you, man.
why not in battle mode make a rule where its eleimnatio onceone of you dies restart the game
They chose Isabelle because she won ALL of the Anima Crossing Plaza polls on the Wii U, so Nintendo believes Isabelle is everybody's favourite.
OmegaGaming 759 Isabelle should just stay in her office and only speak when spoken to. The Able Sisters are my favourite animals. But Tom Nook will always be the most recognizable character.
Mr. Resetti FTW!
Hey. Pink Gold Peach is my go-to, ok.
Why hasn’t Nintendo just put out a “Nintendo Kart” or something along those lines?
if your looking for character variety, i'd recommend mario kart 7 it's also a awesome game!!! :)
😋😂😂
Seriously... Why wasn't *ROVER* the Animal Crossing representative in Mario Kart 8.
His gimmick is literally *ALL ABOUT TRAVELING!*
Plus he's always a fun cute cat to talk to.
I’m really enjoying this ‘in the majority’ one armed monster and his Nintendo content videos.
Have I seen this review before? Yes! Am I rewatching a lot of Arlo videos because it makes me happy? Yes!
boi.
i know you did not just say isabelle was not the best dad gum thing to come outta animal crossing.
1v1 me no items koopaling skins only.
Arlo: Why Isabelle
Me:*laughs in smash ultimate*
11:30 oh past Arlo if only you knew
Arlo, you helped me with my fear of puppets and I now want to hug you, thank you for curing my fear from ever since I was a baby
nintendo! I will pay for DLC if you add mission mode! I miss it so much! Why did you leave it out in every single future game?
I really loved it
Mh, i'm not sure, I think this guy is too nitpicky.
oscarzx n I agree. Some points are valid, but yeah, very nitpicky.
This just went up while I'm on break! Good timing Arlo!!
Best and most honest review I've seen to MK8 Deluxe ... Agree with everything you brought up
Keep up the nice videos.
Am I the only one who really liked MK Wii?
Exobyte no... Plenty people did. In fact if you didn't use the Wii wheel and manual drifting to us you were considered a scrub but that's the best and only way to really play. I never had issues that other people have apparently had.
Exobyte I loved it. That game was the only reason I got a Wii
I wanna play as Tom Nook!
It's amazing how Nintendo can sell the same game twice for 60$ :(
Nepu-Tech USA They're far from the first company to do it...
and that means it's completely fine?? fuck no! I paid 60$ for this on Wii U and was waiting for them to
include battle mode, but they rather hold on to it and release it on Switch and call it a new game, that's
a dick move. Also other companies make remasters, and sell them cheaper but this is the exact same game
with a mediocre battle mode and a few characters thrown in :(
If they charged 40$ I wouldn't complain, or if they added a whole new cup, but this is just lazy and greedy :(
last year I was even expecting this or Splatoon to be bundled titles, and definitely 1/2 Switch, damn I was naive :(
Nepu-Tech USA
Mario kart 8 (Wii U) + DLC pack bundle = $72
Mario kart 8 (Switch) + DLC pack bundle + added characters and karts + actual battle mode + other tweaks = $60
IDK about you, but if 8 deluxe was $40, I would've felt ripped off due to other people getting more content for only $40, while I payed $72 for less.
Dude... the koopalings are awesome...
Well, Mario Kart IS a party game. Nitpicking about the lack of specific features can be justified here.
Fluffi Buni hes not trying to be super negative, its just the kinda thing you can expect from a review
Fluffi Buni He's not being overly negative. He's being fairly critical.
not you The OP is saying Arlo's critical points are nit picky in reaction
l yagami When the core gameplay is so much fun, as he mentioned, any criticisms are bound to sound nitpicky.
Elimination sucked man. It's an improvement, even in couch co-op. Any competent players just run.
Mario Kart Wii is best Mario Kart.
......I'm ready for the comment war.....
