    My two cents : when you eat a sugar with alcool it's called "un canard" (a duck).
    But absinthe used to be served in a glass then water pass through the sugar with a special spoon.
    Calvados is also drunk with coffee, the famous "Café-calva".

    On cider, a small warning for our overseas friends. Here in France, "Cidre" is always alcoholic with a alcohol content usually between 3% and 6%. If you want non-alcoholic sparkling cider, you should instead ask if they have some "jus de pomme pétillant".

    • @letarogers6380
      @letarogers6380 7 месяцев назад

      Hard cider is so popular here now that a restaurant server might assume you mean the alcoholic version. At least, that’s how it is on the west coast. Cider is a great alternative for people who don’t like the taste of beer. I like the drier English style ones, which I think is the one Colleen didn’t like.

    • @AraliciaMoran
      @AraliciaMoran 7 месяцев назад

      @@letarogers6380 That's interesting! I didn't know that hard cider was popular in the US. As a french fan of cider, I've only heard that the definition of the word was distinct between France and the US, and I didn't want someone visiting to get surprised by the difference.

    I was watching the video today and saw the Absinthe bit. I had never heard of someone dipping a sugarcube in it and eating it, honestly I thought someone set you up with that as a joke. The idea of the sugar cube was to put it on a slotted "spoon" that looks more like a cheese knife and have that sit across the rim of you glass over the Absinthe. It was 68 proof because then you drip ice water on to the sugar dissolving it into your glass and mellowing out your drink. The drink then turns a light minty green often referred to as "The Green Fairy". Please make an amended video with that version, you will see a difference.

    • @ontarioyamon
      @ontarioyamon 7 месяцев назад +8

      That video was good fun.
      Perhaps it was the booze 🥴 but I believe they were pronouncing Absinthe incorrectly. It is not A-bi-sinthe, it’s Ab-sinthe. … correct?

  • @lauraguida8482
    @lauraguida8482 7 месяцев назад +9

    LOL!! Your facial expressions say it all! This was really fun to watch and it appears you enjoyed it quite well. To serve of absinthe correctly, pour the absinthe in a glass. Place a sugar cube on your absinthe spoon if you have one or a slotted spoon over the glass and slowly pour ice-cold water over the sugar cube. Let the water slowly drip over the sugar cube for it to dissolve in your glass of absinthe. You should have approximately three to four parts of water per one part absinthe. Your drink will change color from green to a light yellow-green. Stir and Enjoy!

    3:00 The kir bears the name of Canon Felix KIR, the lord mayor of Dijon after WWII. For official receptions where champagne was usually served, he thought it wiser to serve a local drink called _un blanc-cassis_ instead. It is a dollop of black currant liquor with a glass of white wine, both produced in Burgundy.

    I love pastis. I even learned to like non-alcoholic pastis such as Pacific. Unfortunately, it is not available where I live. Our first experience with Calvados was not smooth. As the evening went on the bartender kept bringing us more of their special, homemade Calva from the depths of their cellar. Very memorable. I find it very enjoyable, too. Another really great video. Thank you.
    Of course, as well as Champagne, many French people drink "Cremant" (de Loire, de Bourgogne") as an aperitif. Cremant is made in the same way as Champagne, but can't be called Champagne because it's not made in the Champagne region. I love it!
    You're right about Calvados. It's more often drunk as a digestif rather than an a aperitif.
    Loved your reactions to Absinthe. It's very much an acquired taste, but should be tasted at least once in life. 😇I like it!

    Vincent was right. My dad was part of the Normandy Invasion. And I grew up hearing his stories about how the GI’s were welcomed by the French with Calvados.
    When my husband and I visited Normandy in 1985, we brought him back a bottle. He took one sip and said, “It tastes like lighter fluid! I don’t know how we won that war!” 😂😂

    I LOVE THIS VIDEO!
    We have everything in this video at home except for beer and cidre.
    We always get brute cidre from Bretagne when we stay in the South. In addition, when were in the South every summer and out and about in the intense heat, a Pastis is the most reflective beverage of all time. Because I can’t hold liquor, my limit is one.
    My summer go to at home os Aperol
    Spritz but with champagne.
    Now that autumn is here, our weekend aperitif is the Kir Royal. I cook a lot with Calvados and on our home it’s more used after dinner.
    I’m so happy that you are normalizing champagne-we always have a case in our garage and in our home it is used regularly.
    My apologies if I sound like a lush bit we have aperitifs only on the weekends at home but every night in France! Lol!

    Ahh pastis, nothing like if during the sweltering hot summer days in the south - I am sure that most people use it while playing pétanque as an aiming fluid 😆

    This vidéo is very funny because we're seeing you getting drunk and laugh more and more 😂😂
    It's not only a vidéo about aperitif, there are some "digestifs" (absinthe et calvados)
    As an aperitif you should try le muscat de Rivesalt, from la région des Pyrénées orientales dans le sud de la France.

    They didn't mention that in the South of France or elsewhere, it's quite usual to add something else to your pastis as well as the water. This also means that the drink has a different name, probably someone made some kind of joke or invented a funny name for it. For example - un perroquet - (a parrot) is a pastis with a mint syrup/sirop poured into it. Of course it takes on a green colour, which is why it gets that name. This Summer I created 'un apéro-quizz' to amuse my group of friends and they had to guess the name of - un oiseau alcoolique - and the answer was évidemment - un perroquet. Another one was - une infusion pour les trépassés - answer - une feuille morte, but I'll let you find out what that is on your own.

    Champagne will always be my choice of aperitif- just wish it was more affordable but even so, it’s worth it! I wish I had been in the bar when you were trying all the drinks - you all had such a good time!

    You really must try Chartreuse , it IS excellent ! Specially la jaune because it is less strong then la verte.

    • @francescorighini9303

      I think la verte is the better one: la jaune is kind of shallow. After years of summer gin and tonics, I recently discovered chartreuse (verte) and tonic: best summer drink ever.

    We always have a bottle of calvados in the house! What surprises me is how much cheaper the spirits are as opposed to the other drinks.

    Yet another hilarious, giggeling, light hearted but informative tasting. Loved it! Tbc with Noilly Prat (french Dry Martini style Vermouth) or Muscat (natural sweet wine, served ice-cold), not to forget the numerous digèstifs, like les eaux-de-vie d'Alsace. 😊
