This is by far the easiest method out right now to get your nexus's rooted. The kit is truly amazing and roots your device in just few steps. Simple and easy.
Easily the best most straight forward how-to video on this subject I have seen. Bravo! And once I get my new N5 on xmas morning this will be the first thing I do!
It worked for me on lollipop 5.0.1 LRX22C build. It took some time to unlock the bootloader that kind of scared me for a while cause I thought i've just brick my phone. But everything went fine, thx!
i did this on my nexus 7 and when i clicked root and its supposed to start rebooting and whatnot it froze on the fast boot screen and nothing is working
hi~ can you help me? i just follow you step by step but always checking ADB Status then tell me ADB devices not found. *i use the cable same as you *USB debugging already *MTP is uncheck what the problem then
It's most likely a driver issue with your computer. Use the driver installation guide option in the toolkit. If it still doesn't work, contact the developer or try on a different computer.
I know you mentioned not to ask any questions, but could you answer mine? Can you still update your Nexus OTA to 4.4.2? Provided that there were no custom ROMs flashed?
Thank you so much! I needed the visual guide very badly, not to know how to do it, but to instil some confidence. :P Now let my Nexus 7 arrive and i will root it as soon as i open the bag. :D Cheers!!!
Thank you great tutorial but you missed one thing. To get RSA key you need an app that uses that. You need first to activate PTP from Settings>Storage>USB Computer connections and after that enable USB debugging.
Hey Babbling Boolean, First of all Thanks alot for the video man. I had completely performed as per your procedure for my nexus 5. But I had a query that after completing the rooting (ROOT with custom recovery option); should we be clicking on the Flash Stock or OEM Lock. What are they for? Do u suggest that I should do OEM Lock as anyways I am able to use my mobile.
Dude you are the best person in the whole wide world, thank you so much, because of your video I was able to get android nougat on my phone, keep up the good work
I noticed that there was a backup feature in the toolkit. If I used that would I be able to restore my apps and data back onto my phone after rooting it?
Thanks man! (rooted around December of 2013) now.. I want to unroot, do I just click the "Unroot" button or...? Can you explain it to me or make a video out of it, thanks!
Busybox and ClockworkMod (CWM) have two different purposes and aren't really related. Busybox is sometimes needed for root apps to run properly, CWM is used to flash custom version of Android.
How to make backup of all my files like apps and all. I dont have much music in my phone though but I have google image, in which google show time to time that is is been uploaded to Google Photos.
Can I still recive Original OTA Updates on my Nexus 5 with 4.4.4? Or will it say the same as with Sam Mobile Phones, that it won't work because I modified the Phone?
If the device has an unlocked bootloader and rooted, then you can receive updates. If you load a custom recovery then that usually interferes with system updates.
Babbling Boolean Hey Babbling Boolean, I tried the option above. But after rebooting, the screen is stuck on boot animation logo and not going forward. What would be the issue? I have also tried through bootloader by volume keys+power, still getting stuck on the same place
ADB device not found? I can't seem to get my Win8.1 pc to notice anything. Ideas? I tried using all the different usb ports on my pc. I can access the N5 via windows, and get into the folders, but the ToolKit isn't noticing me.
So let me get this straight. If I unlock the bootloader and root without installing a custom recovery, I can still get OTA updates? Do I have to have a custom recovery in order to flash custom roms?
If i unlock bootloader + root + install custom recovery AND NOT flashing Custom ROM, can I still get an OTA update for my phone? Or do it need to it manually then?
Dylan Schmittle So meaning that if I only unlock the bootloader + root the phone (without installing custom recovery), then can get the OTA update, right?
Dylan Schmittle Babbling Boolean Hi, first, thanks for your tutorial. I follow all the steps and succesfully unlock bootloader, root and install custom recovery in my Nexus 5, but i received the OTA for 4.4.2 and installed it and I lose root. Which steps i have to follow in order to get root again? Thanks.
Sendi Ferro In the program menu change the version of Android your Nexus 5 is running so that the program knows which version of Android your phone us running. Then simply connect your phone via "usb debugging" and select only "root" in the program menu.
This video is not valid anymore. I have used this video one time before long ago to root the same phone. Now it is a few years later and it seems that the program that is used does use only useful to reflash, lock and unlock. it does not give root access anymore.
No, unlocking the bootloader is different, it allows for the user to flash custom ROMs, modify the device, overclock the processor etc. What you're asking about, SIM unlock is different, but the Nexus 5 should come unlocked even from cellphone network providers.
Rishabh Singh it's not about being obvious or not!! I asked u something and I expect an answer from you in a similar manner!! Obviously I know it's not KitKat..i don't need your clarification for that!
My nexus 5 does not show the "Allow USB Debugging" screen

I dont have "Allow USB debugging" screen, what's problem?
super tut mate rooted nexus 5 and installed custom recovery in few steps and then flashed xTraSmooth 2.1 odex rom from xda using twrp ;)
It worked for me on lollipop 5.0.1 LRX22C build. It took some time to unlock the bootloader that kind of scared me for a while cause I thought i've just brick my phone. But everything went fine, thx!
I have all done. I am now in Boatloader Mode and i clicked unlock. But my pc can't find my Device. So what to do?

*MTP is uncheck
what the problem then

by doing this will it erase everything such as contacts, games, photos, videos, etc...
Will this work with android 5.1 on a nexus 5?
I got a pop up saying "in Team Win Recovery Project:" It then goes through install instructions. No idea what to do now.
Flash Write Failure on my Nexus 5. . . Any advice of hope? or is it a brick?
ADB drivers wont install, nor i get any screen to allow this computer.
I know you mentioned not to ask any questions, but could you answer mine?
Can you still update your Nexus OTA to 4.4.2? Provided that there were no custom ROMs flashed?
Yes that is correct. Many devices tend to have problems updating even if they have a custom recovery installed.
Hey man, thanks for helping me root my phone for the first time. Your video really helped make me take a step forward. 100% accurate too!
Thank you so much! I needed the visual guide very badly, not to know how to do it, but to instil some confidence. :P
Now let my Nexus 7 arrive and i will root it as soon as i open the bag. :D
Cheers!!!
So at 2:58 I did not receive the pop up to 'allow USB debugging'.
Anyone happen to know what I need to do?
The 'full driver installation guide' fixed my issue. This program is pretty nice.
Thanks for this great tutorial. I followed it step by step with no problems.
I have a nexus 5 with 5.0.1 never rooted before, can i still use this file to root my phone?
can i do this on my nexus 5 running marshmallow 6.0.1?
Thank you great tutorial but you missed one thing. To get RSA key you need an app that uses that. You need first to activate PTP from Settings>Storage>USB Computer connections and after that enable USB debugging.
it will work on epad tab model no A704X ??????
I have an old Nexus 5 and want to root it. Is this still the only method?
Hey Babbling Boolean, First of all Thanks alot for the video man. I had completely performed as per your procedure for my nexus 5. But I had a query that after completing the rooting (ROOT with custom recovery option); should we be clicking on the Flash Stock or OEM Lock. What are they for? Hi, I have a question, when you press "Root" how many time spend in "Cheking ADB Status"?
hey my device is stucked on fasboot mode. how to repair it?
Dude you are the best person in the whole wide world, thank you so much, because of your video I was able to get android nougat on my phone, keep up the good work

idk if this is a dumb question but could i do this with lollipop? and is this possible on a mac?
When you're selecting the device and Android version, if Lollipop is listed then yes. If it isn't, then no.
Thank you four your comment also if i am running a custom rom will i go back to my stock rom?
Sorry wrong link, this is what I should have sent you: ruclips.net/video/ouCMqweipX4/видео.html
I noticed that there was a backup feature in the toolkit. If I used that would I be able to restore my apps and data back onto my phone after rooting it?
Probably but I don't use that method. Ask the developer for a solid answer.
I unlocked it yesterday and used helium backup and that worked perfectly
I get stuck on "Pushing root files to your device" Any suggestions?

That video is already released, link to it is in the above video description.
lol sorry yeah i just got done watching the video. One more question, I have a flashed ROM and how can I (unflash?) this ROM and add a new one?
plbeltran93 u do a wipe cache,partition,system from recovery everytime b4 u flash a new rom.that does the job.
hi, the form "allow usb debugging" doesnt pop up, i cant start the unlocking... i enabled usb debugging.. can u help me? :)
Try to change USB mode - Settings > Storage > Menu > USB Computer connection - from MTP to PTP.
I'm assuming that I don't have to install busybox if I don't want to, and instead install clockwork.
Busybox and ClockworkMod (CWM) have two different purposes and aren't really related. Busybox is sometimes needed for root apps to run properly, CWM is used to flash custom version of Android.
Thanks so much for making the video man. Appreciate it.
How to make backup of all my files like apps and all. I dont have much music in my phone though but I have google image, in which google show time to time that is is been uploaded to Google Photos.

If the device has an unlocked bootloader and rooted, then you can receive updates. If you load a custom recovery then that usually interferes with system updates.
Heard that with TWRP it will work. Did you try?
Babbling Boolean Hey Babbling Boolean, I tried the option above. But after rebooting, the screen is stuck on boot animation logo and not going forward. What would be the issue? I have also tried through bootloader by volume keys+power, still getting stuck on the same place

So let me get this straight. If I unlock the bootloader and root without installing a custom recovery, I can still get OTA updates?
Do I have to have a custom recovery in order to flash custom roms?
What. The you mean with the Google nexus 5
If i unlock bootloader + root + install custom recovery AND NOT flashing Custom ROM, can I still get an OTA update for my phone? Or do it need to it manually then?
custom recovery prevents OTA
Dylan Schmittle
So meaning that if I only unlock the bootloader + root the phone (without installing custom recovery), then can get the OTA update, right?
You can but you may lose root

It's work 6.0.1 ???
It's work 6.0.1 marshmallow...???
does this network unlock your phone?
No, unlocking the bootloader is different, it allows for the user to flash custom ROMs, modify the device, overclock the processor etc.
What you're asking about, SIM unlock is different, but the Nexus 5 should come unlocked even from cellphone network providers.
Oh man thank you so much!
Thanks work for me.
why didnt you click on backup at first???
I had nothing to backup, once the Nexus 5 was rooted then I could take my main files and apps off of my Nexus 4 and transfer them to my Nexus 5.
Great
thanks
Cheers Dude, perfect!!
i dont get the pop up
does this make the phone sim free
No, that's completely different. This unlocks the bootloader which allows full customization of the phone's software.
