  • The Razor Robertson era finally began on Saturday as the All Blacks just about overcame an England team showing us all just what a serious side they are. So how did New Zealand see it home, what can England take from the game, and how does it set up Saturday's second test?

    • @JEstey10000

Indeed, I bet that we'll see rugby teams beating each other in every single match, except when it's a draw. :P
Kidding aside, I completely agree - the margins between great and greatest have gotten so fine, and every rugby match has so many variables, that this could well be an age of upsets, where any top side can beat any other on their day!

@@brengray2453 The funniest thing is - Squidge has never played rugby to any level - and he keeps making mistakes that skewer the media narrative that he desperately trying to push. Case in point, anyone who's played to any level knows that the "corner-flagging" line that he attributes to Kolisi is.. a blind side flanker line. And that's a problem because Kolisi's 6 shirt is an open side fetcher shirt in ZA rugby. That MIGHT be fine but.. ZA Already Have a brilliant Blind Side Flank in PSdT so why is Siya playing as.. another blind side who CANNOT fetch? Why is ZA reduced to picking their best 6 -Kwagga Smith- as an out of sorts 8, just to give them a chance at the breakdown? Why do the Bokke suddenly do so much better at the breakdown the moment Captain 49 Minutes gets subbed? Don't ask the media, they suddenly lose the ability to do any in depth metrics on the breakdown battle the moment Kolisi steps on the pitch. But most people who play rugby can see what the problem is. Kolisi is SO Amay-zing that.. the Bokke do a whole heap better the moment he is no longer on the pitch..

An on-fire Alex Mitchell is genuinely so underrated by England fans, even though he gets a moderate amount of praise, I don’t think it’s enough for what he can do. He doesn’t snipe anywhere near as much as he used to and therefore defences still need to watch for it, allowing him so much more time to set the attack. Him and Furbank are a lot of the reason as to why Saints were the best prem team last year.

Simple game plan for Razor this weekend.. basically play the Dunedin second half in the first half. Forward dominant, set piece to set piece, maul, pick and go then box kick constantly keeping the English forwards under pressure and backtracking. This should pay dividends in the second half with tiring forwards and fresh bench players.

I really thought the difference between the two teams was in the last 25 minutes second half where NZ changed style of play completely. Credit to Beauden who was so influential in that.
That said, for me, that was Borthwick's first big in-game error. Taking off Mitchell & Smith for a new half-back pairing of Spencer & Finn Smith (who had never played a game together before) really hampered England's ability to respond to the NZ change of style. Not helped that George, the captain, was also off.
How many of the top 4 (SA, Ireland, NZ & France) regularly replace their 10 in a tight game? Aside from the kicking, I think that was Marcus' best game for England. Really pulled the strings in attack and did a lot of good in his defensive role. With England losing the territory game, I felt like they needed to move to a system with phases of attack which you needed the starting 10 to run. Instead we changed 3 key decision-makers and kept playing in a way that allowed NZ to retain control. Felt like the game ended with a whimper, rather than a real push to win.

One often overlooked strength of the All Blacks is their rugby IQ & their ability to problem solve. It took them to half time to do this on Saturday but it still happened. For their first game they managed that cagey second half well. They always improve for the second game against an opponent because they know where to fix and where to apply pressure. I think you'll see some attacking adjustments this weekend and they'll get some more pay from their attack.

England played the Springbok game against the All Blacks which was to smother them. You cannot beat the worlds greatest team of all time by playing their style of rugby. You need to stop them from winning and that involves putting bodies on the line by pushing them back in the tackle and denying them space. England did exactly that and came very close to beating them. This England needs to do again. The win will come. Springbok fan.

The weakness in England's rush-defence is that Razor is...well super sharp. Watch for new AB tactics, eswpecially the kick in behind England toward either corner touchline to force thm back AND gain territory. Winning the lineout in your 22 really just leaves the safe option of kicking for touch. Also, Razor will be tempted to start runaway freight train Aumua, with our best forward pack (so same as 1st test except for Aumua). And I'd go for a 6-2 split bomb squad for the 2nd half to run England off their feet. DMac will turn up with his own kicking boots (instead of his sister's) and he'll learn to count to 60 in his head now lol. Sititi should be on the bench, and I'd be tempted to put Finau there too - and start Blackadder. So my bench woud be taylor, newell, tuungafasi, vaa'i, finau and sititi, with beaudie and ratima the only backs.

A few things that also made the difference were the NZ scrum having the upper hand (whether legally or not) and the NZ bench being better. Borthwick who has done a lot right, made a mistake in taking off some of our best attacking players in Mitchell, M Smith and Chandler Cunningham South. But all in all it was a pretty good match up. There is now it seems very little between SA, NZ, France, Ireland and England which is making for some great test matches. Australia also could be making a resurgence as well.

Lets see how Razor progresses this team and we have almost moved back to the old school rugby of the 70's and 80's, were we see close fought battles with accuracy being the winner on the day.
Maybe the running rugby the AB's used to play is over for now..

NZ tactical changes is how Eng played SA in the WRC finals. Eng kicked everything giving SA nothing to hit. It’s very effective for blitz defences.

Borthwick’s substitutions made Eng worse and Razor’s made NZ better. Eng left some exceptional young talents at home. NZ have many talents out of contention. All in all, Eng missed again taking a huge scalp. The jury is still out on Borthwick - but Jones seems to have had a positive impact. I expect that was Eng’s only chance down there. Would love to be proven wrong - but the NZ talent and coaching nouse of Robertson is at another level.

Pretty solid analysis. Makes😅 one think game too defence focused which isn’t good for expansive rugby. Still think limiting replacements would force teams into balancing power with skill. 120kg doesn’t run for 80 mins and that used to be the trade off now they only have to run 40. If they can’t run for 80 then they shouldn’t be there. They just shut the game down and don’t allow the true skills and abilities of those that can play the 80 minutes are there to bring to the game.

The other thing I noticed about the ABs change to the kicking game was that they then changed it up slightly part way through.
They tried the sort of wipers infield kicks of Dmac but then later oh started firing more long downfield kicks straight into Lt. Furbank and rush get someone to smash him backwards to stop him running it back.

  • @stephenbaxter5804
    @stephenbaxter5804 18 дней назад

So many kicks in the second half. While I enjoyed the kicks being just long enough to be gathered and then Sevu Reece absolutely smashing Furbank, id like to see a greater mix of those just long enough to be collected by England and then proper contestable kicks. Plus there was a shocker, where DMac puts up a lovely chip kick... and who is the player dawdling to retrieve it... Scott Barrett, not exactly the most speedy player. Looking forward to Will Jordan returning.

Theres only one team the All Blacks play like & that team is the All Blacks. You dont get a winning percentage of 76% that spans right back to 1903 playing like another rugby team.

@laurieclark6652 Show me how NZ have innovated in the last 3 years? No one will question the history and winning percentage & innovation during the Richie McCaw era.
It's specific & easily recognisable by any rugby fan who has watched the French & SA how they have changed the game over the last 3 years.
So your answer is about history & winning percentage, not current innovation.

the way I see it : first half over, but the AB's still playing- why? why not kick the ball out, you are ahead 10-7? Then in the end McKenzie has a very good opportunity to make it 19-15- he takes too long to kick the penalty. Final score 16-15.

  • @JohnSmith_1331

I feel like 'let a big lad just get smashed' is a good way to go. Keep pounding that ball at England with the big lads - Asafo Aumua is about twice as fast as any big man on England, if he gets through the middle it's going to be a problem for England (I hope he gets the start this week). And it will tire out the England defense. Let the big men run up the middle over and over, then go outside. Trying to force it outside when you haven't forced England to compress the defense seems unlikely to succeed.
