  • As Friday the 26th July was the opening ceremony on the 2024 Olympics in Paris, I thought I would do a topical review. Here we have a Train pack from Hornby released during the London 2012 Olympics.
    Lets take a look.

Hi. Always enjoy your reviews. As far as I know the smoking/non smoking signs never appeared on the outer corridor side windows of the coaches. They would have been on the internal compartment windows.

Hi thanks for the kind words, a very good point, I didn't even consider these could be a corridor coach's! Thanks for watching and taking the time to message.

The same coaches were in the Barry Freeman Rare Bird pack, I remember thinking about (but didn't in the end) buying the 1948 Olympic pack just to get s couple more of the coaches.

Hello me! hope all well. I will look up the Rare Bird Pack, I only have the duchess from the freeman collection, not bad coaches though. I will drop you a mail, did you get the Stirling.

@@dustyshelfcollectablesrare bird is my favorite of those train packs. I bought the Stirling when it was originally released. Really nice model.

    It was an unusual pack.
The coaches were meant to represent teak suburbans but were in fact full length gresley corridors.
Its rare for these to be done in early br ownership teak.
In fact the Rare Bird train pack from the same year had similiar coaches.
Subsequent reruns by Hornby of the teaks representing BR ownership had iffy printing of the teak effect.
I bought this set for that reason. (For a lot less than 200 quid) just to add extra post LNER teaks to the Barry J Freeman set.
The N2 was ancient tooling even back then, ex Mainline I believe which had dodgy pickups and hard to get sorted.
The reason for the printing on one side, is that was the side that led straight into the compartments.
The other side led to the corridor. So smoking and non smoking would have been inside.
Pipe work only ran on one side prototypically.
My Summary ... great coaches, naff loco.
Great to pick up for a 100 quid or so and add coaches to the Freeman set and sell the loco. 😂

Many thanks for all the info there, I think thanks all my questions answered, so thanks you. And I agree with your summary. to my shame it didn't even cross my mind these were corridor coaches when I was rabbiting away, oh well. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to share the info.

Would be interesting to see a video on the two Javelin packs. You can do a bit of comparison between them. The purple pack is the budget train set/Railroad tooling while the white one is the more detailed railways range model.

I didn't realise the whit set was detailed, thanks for the tip, I will get working on a Javelin review! Thanks again for watching!

Hello, another interesting and enjoyable review, after watching your pervious reviews on Hornby Dublo Great Gathering locos, I lashed out £200 quid on a Rails sale DWIGHT D EISENHOWER, as I remember seeing it in Darlington station bay platform in the late fifties! It is a lovely model, glad I bought it for a reasonable? price. Keep up the great reviews and vids, Regards- RICHARD.

Nice looking coaches. I’d imagine the No Smoking/Smoking signs are correct. There’s no reason why they would be on the corridor side. They’d probably be on the internal doors to each compartment.

@@forrestrobin2712 Will do, I have got a bit side tracked, good news is the layout is no longer on the dining table! I Still use the dublo a lot running locos, but should get back onto the details later in the summer once the Marklin layout is out of the garden.

Add some weight plus a little weathering and you have something that is no longer a box queen. I guess I would just put it back in the box for the archeological type people to find in the distant future. I always want to see more so anything you do is OK by me. Great content and video, Jersey Bill

These teak coaches are going for upwards of £60 these days, this pack is well worth the money for £130.

That N2 is as old as the hills. Originally a Mainline issue, then Dapol? and finally Hornby. Yes its should be a railroad model now. Pick ups are terrible to sort if you dare remove base keeper plate. Just sold mine as a new tooled one is rumoured to be coming out by someone

I new it was old but not that it has done the rounds, thanks for the info and I will take your advice and leave the base plate well alone. Thanks for watching and sharing the info.
