Apple to ‘Pay’ OpenAI for ChatGPT Through Distribution

- When Apple unveiled a landmark arrangement with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone, iPad and Mac, they were mum on the financial terms. Now, sources say Apple won't be paying OpenAI as part of the partnership: instead, Apple believes pushing OpenAI’s brand and technology to hundreds of millions of its devices is of equal or greater value than monetary payments. Bloomberg's Lynn Doan joins Caroline Hyde and Tim Stenovec on "Bloomberg Technology."

Open AI is not on Apple devices. It's clearly off device. There is not real integration. It amounts to a plug-in to Apple's platform user interfaces and applications.

it would be absolutely impossible to run openai models on any local device, even a desktop PC, or it would take extremely long time (we're talking tens if not hundreds of hours of computing a single response from AI).
its likely that openai is used to get general purpose answers from the internet like "whos the president of country X", while device intelligence will be handled by local AI and private cloud compute AI

For OAI -the non-profit -this is THE biggest win in the world.
The only possible negative would be runaway usage requiring major short term investment. Then I could see Limits and or tokens purchased to cover costs.

Apple is reportedly not paying OpenAI in cash for this partnership. The thought is they get free distribution across all iPhones (which might be beneficial in the long term).

They do require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to be able to use the Apple Intelligence features, however - because the older models don’t have a powerful enough Neural Engine to run the on-device stuff required for it all to work. Older/lower model devices will still be able to run iOS 18, but they won’t get Apple Intelligence.
Readers added context they thought would be important: iOS 18 will not only support the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Apple snaked Open AI. They gave the impression that Chat GPT would be their primary generative model, then developed a direct competitor. Chat GPT in addition to Siri/Apple Intelligence is redundant; it’ll probably be rarely used. They even set it up as an obviously less-safe, extra-step, after-thought 😂 I suspect that Sam Altman betrayed Open AI somehow. A litigation would be tricky because of their non-monetary agreement.
You are assuming that the quality of results from Apple Intelligence will be anywhere near the quality of ChatGPT. We haven't even seen a live demo of Apple AI yet, just some marketing materials and a tentative release date in 2025. There is basically zero way that the results from a model running on device will compete with any AI model running in a datacenter.
@@abklaass chat gpt doesn’t even know anything that happened this year. Siri DOES. The major issue with Siri is the subpar encoding of a users spoken inputs. Chat gpt is amazing in THAT particular aspect.

Nah, Apple users will be given option to use or not use ChatGPT, so users will know if they are about to ask ChatGPT. Apple is not stupid enough to call OpenAI API with its user's info in the payload, so it's most likely anonymous anyway. Apple is in advantage here, because they will know the gap of their own AI and what its users actually use, so they can fill the feature gaps later and scrap OpenAI, they even make the UX to use ChatGPT to be easy to replace.
If apple can build a whole map system, they will soon build their on model they just need time and its all viable in the way of integration.

I will disable disable access to ChatGPT on ALL my Apple devices. My personal AI training data STAYS ON MY DEVICE!
It literally asks you every time it wants to send anything to ChatGPT. You always get the choice to opt out. But they will almost certainly have a hard opt-out so you don’t even have to say no every time.

In this deal Apple just looks like a hardware company running OpenAI services. A phone with better AI integration will steal the phone market.
Apple uses its own LLM on device and Private Cloud Compute for off-device. Users can opt in to use ChatGBT in the case where Apple doesn't thiink private cloud compute can do the best job.

@@duran9664You’re thinking of Microsoft and Google. Apple specifically talked about how in their business model, you are their customer, not their product. They don’t sell any of your information to anyone. Their agreement with OpenAI requires that they not collect or store any information from the Apple Intelligence integration either, unless the user connects it to their own personal paid ChatGPT account and opt that account in for it.

Got in at AMS69X at $1 but will be holding it till $50. Even at that price market cap is reasonable for its tech.
Also, for all we know, OpenAI and the thousands of other "AI companies" might not be around next year. It makes sense that Apple does not want to take that gamble on any potentially lame horse.
