    The memorial on a HUMAN scale -- the same scale as those who come to remember -- is very moving. Sorry for stating the obvious, but Monticello, like other plantations, could not and would not have existed without the institution of slavery and work of the enslaved persons who lived here. Thank you for this.

    I am eager to travel to Monticello again so that I can visit the Contemplative Monument and pay homage to the unfree people who had to spend their lives working for free for the Jeffersons. They are the truly great ones, not Thomas Jefferson.
