- Gaming Pastime reviews MotorStorm for PlayStation 3.
Developed by Evolution Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, MotorStorm was released for PlayStation 3 in March, 2007. MotorStorm is an aggressive and dirty racing game. It's got attitude, style and the gameplay is brutally fun.

One of my favourite racing games ever, I remember being blown away by it at the time. Would love to see the series get remastered.
Yea agreed!
This was the first game I played on ps3 amd the graphics was mind blowing back in 2008
@@CapeRides Same. I’m still impressed by the dynamic mud trails the car wheels leave.
@@Nades_ and the handling. I'm currently playing the Arctic storm on my android
Even now the graphics are still impressive, iplay it sometimes on pc via a emulator at 4k and it looks great
This and pacific rift are so damn good. Apocalypse is different but still fun and the setting is impressive. I'd say pacific rift is the best one of the trilogy.
During my college years, me and my best friend used to play Pacific Rift splitscreen for hours, often up to 12 maps at a time as a sort of a championship. We would add up our finishing positions as points and the loser would have to go to 24/7 grocery store down the street to get the midnight snacks & drinks...good times...
Pacific Rift holds up great today IMO, except for some extreme rubberbanding in later events
(READ AT DISCRETION... I basically wrote an essay...)
In the first Motorstorm most of the vehicles in the base game were in a pristine condition overall (appearance wise) and only really modified for whatever vehicle class (the Patriot Surger being a muscle car customized in ways similar to the interceptor from mad max 2 with the cut front bumper, spare tires as well as the custom fuel tank and then the Patriot Renegade being a stock car modified with rally suspension, off-road tires, spare tires and a bump bar the other base game rally cars are purpose built rally cars in comparison to these 2) they're a part but otherwise they were pretty clean looking while later on dlc vehicles would get reinforced parts or rougher appearances (the Patriot 85 has a wire mesh across the front windshield in addition to sheet metal plates while the Castro capitao got a full external cage and the Diablo... Well the name says enough...) and with Pacific Rift they took that even further where yeah you'd have vehicles from the previous game meshing with new ones that hailed from various backgrounds and uses from street vehicles modified to handle off-roading to vehicles with racing pedigrees to their name purpose built for gettin down and dirty in the first place... And the monster trucks... But then with Arctic Edge (PS2 and PSP) and Apocalypse we lost the roster but gained customization options to really personalize the vehicles we drove it wasn't as good as the others but it also had the most staked against it and I'm glad I got to play for a short while before they shutdown the servers on Apocalypse (if it wasn't for a certain event the year of release Apocalypse would have done better in sales as the game is still technically missing tracks and vehicles hell it's the likely the franchise would still be prevalent if not for nature being an asshole... Also Motorstorm RC exists... It's mid...)
Apocalypse is a throwback to carmageddon, which I played as an even younger kid, so it has a special place for me :) Edit: sorry it's not carmageddon but another racing game where the environment falls apart, anyone know what it was?
@@Barcodez5555 I KNOW IM LATE, but it couldn't have been as late as 2010 with Split/Second? I'm actually interested in knowing which game it was myself xD
This game's sound design was also amazing. Sound is an afterthought in so many newer racing games.
This series desperately need to be brought back or have a remaster: improve the textures, up it to 60 fps, restore multiplayer and port it to multiple consoles. Anything else would be a nice extra
Sadly, the studio that created those games no longer exist. Codemasters bought them, they made Onrush but it flopped, so several members were let go and the team was merged into Criterion Games. But for a remaster or a remake Sony can hire other studio, that would be great
The nostalgia for me around this game is real. Getting my ps3 and playing this first will always be a fond memory - good old motorstorm ❤
Love this game. MotorStorm on PS3 and Excite Truck on Wii were such fun driving masterpieces from that period.
The intro to this still blows me away. One of the few I never skip.
Same here
Man, when I was younger playing this the graphics felt like a movie to me.
Pacific Rift is the high water mark of the series. Diverse racing biomes, loads of tracks, same brutal challenge.
This game came with a lot of PS3s and I remember it just being the pinnacle of graphics at the time, really showing customers why they just spent $600. Seriously, back then, Motorstorm's graphics were INSANE.
I love going back to this game and the second one. Still fun even after all these years.
This games soundtrack is so intertwined with it's gameplay it's weird seeing it being played without it. Some really great picks for the music.
The soundtrack exposed me to so much good music in metal, grunge, punk rock, and electronic
One good thing about not having the game patched is that you could tap the boost button to continuously boost without having to worry about overheating otherwise, the game DLC alongside other game DLC like Killzone 2, or some of the Resistance DLC have been delisted for a long time prior to the server shutdown, so even if you had the game patched you wouldn't be able to download it, I think there's a Japanese copy of Motorstorm that comes complete with the DLC, otherwise emulation is an awesome option, it's cool seeing these games again running at a smoother/higher resolution.
Loved this game when i was younger still love playing it now
I can't believe it lol... I just bought a PS3 Slim with MotorStorm & Apocalypse 4 hours ago.
Played MotorStorm to test the console, and enjoyed the heck out of it!
MAN.. Take me back to the sumer of 2007! I remember getting Motorstorm and Resistance Fall of man. Looking back easily one of the best summers ever!
Needs a remake.
Would be a cool switch port / remake ... 😅
The sound, vibration and the feel of the driving made this game a masterpiece.
I'm not even a racing game fan. Only ever really enjoyed burnout. But I picked all these games up recently and really enjoyed them. There is something so satisfying about the handling and the cool effects.
That intro cutscene brings back good memories...
One of those games I never had the fortune to play in its prime. Always wanted to give this a proper try
Holy shit. I have a very very distant memory of seeing a desert racing game on TV when I was a kid. It was like a LAN session where a bunch of people were racing against eachother in different kinds of vehicles and I could never find it. I remember asking my dad to buy me Colin McRae Dirt 1 thinking it was thing game and being sad to realise there was no multiplayer with loads of people competing like i'd seen on TV. Ive been looking for the name of this game ever since.
This is one of the games I used to dream about when I was a kid from the commercials; it made me want a ps3 sooo bad. When I finally got one two years later (2009)...I completely forgot about the series and never bought a copy of any of the games out of the maybe 60 ps3 games I bought during my childhood. I've played a good amount of the game through rpcs3 though. Pretty good feels newer than 2007
You have to go into the online part in the game itself to update the game. It's the same thing with Resistance Fall of man, you have to basically change some settings in the network settings to make your own kind of server than you'll be able to update in game.
There’s a guide for it. They’re called PSONE servers (PlayStation Online Emulation servers). As the name suggests, these guys are emulating PlayStation’s servers so you can play Motorstorm and a few other games online again. If you follow the guide, you’ll be on their servers and can download the update that allows you to play the DLC as well as play the game online again.
I read somewhere that the DLC for the game was delisted, but I still see it’s up on the PS3 store. Maybe they meant inaccessible, not delisted. Anyway, hope this helps you and anybody who reads this and have fun playing your favorite game again!
Absolutely lived up to the hype, first time I got a HD tv a while after release I was blown away also with the music track's, but I hate motorbikes lol, I still have a copy 🏅
This game is awesome. If you liked it and want more variety, then I think you're going to enjoy Motorstorm Pacific Rift
I've been playing this recently on RPCS3, I managed to find an EU iso that has all the dlc.
Crazy a video came out about this game in 2023
Played the hell out of this game in my late teens. The dirt phsysics and slow motion crashes mezmerized me on my sony bravia at the time.
Man I remember this game had a soundtrack to remember and the graphics were just completely wild at the time. Even today it definitely holds up. The mud especially
Please remaster this gem!!!
We need more games like these! The soundtrack never left my mind!
One thing I remembered about the boosting system is that when you explode, it propels your car forward at tremendous speed before you are reset. This could be used to steal first place at the last second before the finish line, so in that situation it could actually be beneficial to intentionally overboost. It was a pretty cool idea.
The rubberbanding was really bad on this game though, and it got worse the further you got into the events. Because of this, I remember the best strategy for winning was to simply keep up with the pack for the first 2 1/2 laps, and then only try to take the lead in the final 1/2 lap. The racing was still fun enough for me to finish the game completely, but this rubberbanding means that 75-85% of every race doesn't matter much insofar as determining the outcome.
They seriously need to bring this game back. It was such fun, especially the 1st and 3rd game
THIS NEEDS A HD REMASTER ON STEAM!!!
This is the first game I remember where there was a huge controversy about the pre-release teasers being heavily pre-rendered.
crazy how good this game still looks. I still have my ps3, pacific rift and apocalypse
They need this back, especially with their recent push to diversify to multiplayer, not only that there are barely any arcade fun xtreme sport/dirt bike games, even MX vs ATV now leans toward simcade.
I remeber the demo at gamestop, that Pendulum song Slam was the only track i think and hot damn it still gives me chills feeling the confidence of that games presentation.
There is a Motorstorm Complets edition that was released. Grab that if you want the DLC.
I remember going to Sony Wonder (Some Sony expo) here in NYC as a kid and them having PS3 on display and all of us lined up to play this one game.
It was magic
My first PS3 game. Shame what Sony did to Evolution Studios, imagine Driveclub 2 and new Motorstorm on PS5 :(
It’s weird hearing the game without the amazing soundtrack
I played the demos of this series non-stop back when I had a ps3
Loved this game. I always played in hood cam view. Motorstorm, resistance, killzone, and warhawk made some awesome memories. Had more fun on ps3 than any other system
This needs a FRESH STEAM RELEASE!!
great review! I love this series of games... but my PS3 isn't online, I have no DLC.
I'd love to see a video on how this effects collecting games going forward, are there many PS3 games you think are really bad without the DLC?
There is a version of the original game where it has all of the DLC and patches, but only exclusive to Europe and Japan.
game still looks amazing
I remember seeing GamerTV doing an episode on this back in the day, loved that show. Never got around to playing this game, cool video!
Loved it. Even the graphics were insane back in the days.
Great game and Pacific Rift is even better
From a time when games were still unique, original, well designed and FUN.
If this series made a comeback on the Ps5 and PC I would buy it in a heartbeat! My PS3 is still sitting on a shelf with motorstorm 2 in it. Unfortunately it's there after it got the yellow light, just waiting to be revived. 😅
Just take it to your local repair shop to get it fixed
Wow this game brings a lot of memories, but one of the memories is that when I bought the PlayStation 3D TV this game came bundle with the TV 🤩🥰. love this game.
I got this game for 99¢ at GameStop back in '16.
I got my construction crew to play it when it came out we would bet 1$ per race tons of fun.
I had 4 top 100 times on the leaderboards back in the day, I remember using the rally car on every track and if you got your laps in right you could win all the time.
I remember I didn't win in my first 50 races, got good, and had a 44% win rate 😂
I miss MotorStorm 🔥👍😭😩
I really liked this game & series, but I do agree with your assessment. Game is fun as heck but the tracks do get repetitive. Motorstorm 2 & 3 (Pacific Apocalypse) do attempt to remedy this first game's problems, but then creates new problems. For example, Motorstorm 3 (Apocalypse) offers numerous tracks that change during a race, assuring that even the laps change as you race in them...however they mostly take place in city landscapes & not the country, which loses its original appeal. Still, I recommend trying them all, as they all offer different & unique alterations. And I was a bit sad when Sony cut ties with the studio and it was forced to shut down. This series showed great promise that will never been known.
Also, Motorstorm 3 (Apocalypse)) came out at the time Sony was pushing their 3D tv's and so it offered 3D. I've played the game with Sony's "Active Shutter" 3D tv's and I thought it was pretty dope. Though I acknowledge that not everyone likes that form of 3D. I personally loved it.
Other games that offered it was Resistance 3 (also very nice) and Uncharted 3 (which I could never get to work properly).
Sony would eventually abandon 3D and move towards VR.
MotorStorm 3 is actually arctic edge, developed by bigbig studios.
Pacific rift is the second one.

My bad, and thank-you for the clarification. Its been a long time since I played them. I still have them, but they are in a cardboard box somewhere in my crowded closet. I should have looked it up. But again, Thanks for the clarification. :)
@@tropixx_xlr1549
Just looked it up. Motorstorm Apocalypse is the 3rd game I was talking about.
That new problems you mention with Apocalypse made me not enjoy it like its predecessors, it's my least favorite one. It doesn't feel quite like a Motorstorm being in a city and not in a beautiful natural environment with rusty walls and awesome license music blasting in my ears. And the handling in Apocalypse is weird to me, the vehicles fall way too fast to the ground.
@@davidarco6127
I agree, the city landscapes just aren't as fun, But they do change with each lap, as earthquakes create new paths while closing off others and weather can wreak havoc to your car's mobility, which I can see how this would turn off players. Plus, driving around the city in a dune-buggy or dirt bike just feels so off.
Talk about a game that deserves a remaster on the ps7
i think you would really enjoy flatout and/or flatout 2 which is really similar to motorstorm but i feel like alot of the things motorstorm lacks flatout has or fixes such as the map layout being able to get ahead of people with different paths and fun minigames that are legit
Need these games back on PS5
This game looked beautiful I remember playing on ps3🔥🔥🔥
Now, this is Podracing! -Anakin Skywalker child slave
The sequels did deliver more Pacific Rift and Apocalypse are pretty good
I think it was a release Day game.
Loved it!
Criminally underrated, I remember going into dick smith and playing it on the ps3 back in the day because I was poor.
Dude, you were already one of my favourite reviewers and now Motorstorm? I'd subscribe twice if I could. This game *was* my teens and I love it. The second game improves on all of this game's shortcomings and dials it up to 11, I think you'll enjoy it. Really hope to see a remaster of this someday, still tied for my favourite racing game with NFSU2 and I remember it looking *incredible* back in the day. It was the game that made me buy a HD TV and a HDMI cable, after using a 10-ton CRT forever.
Pacific rift is this but MORE. Such an insane series, doubt we'll ever see another buy boy would I love to see what the devs could do with modern tech!
I challenge the world with this title 🥸💪✌️
Got this game Christmas day with the ps3 the graphics blew me away
this game needs a comeback.
unreal engine 5 is perfect for the series
@@burnerr absolutely! man, id dig blasting thru the mud again in motorstorm
A brilliant game on PS3. Then I remember getting it on PSP & being really disappointed with the grainy looking graphics. I'm surprised Sony didn't bring out a new one for PS5.
I remember when the first motor storm came out with the release of the ps3 and I thought the graphics were out of this world top tier
I love in pacific rift if you ran over a biker you could hear their bones crack 😂😂😂
As good as the original is, no racing game can hold a candle to Pacific Rift.. it's challenging, fun, awesome, has an amazing setting, and gets more and more difficult the further you go.
if you connect to either of those custom servers, the game will install the latest patch
I have dreamed of a new game since forever. Come on.. please..
To think, when first released, I didn't like MotorStorm at all. For some reason, I wasn't initially impressed. After Pacific Rift though, I was sold and when hunting for the first game.
I do hope they release the 4 games for the new generation console, together with VR support. This in VR, would be great!
Love Pacific Rift the most. I'm actually trying to make a game which is a mix of Motorstorm and Split Second: Velocity.
Great franchise. A Motorstorm sequel on ps5 would look amazing
I still play on my PS3, even with my raggedy Dual Shock 3.
I really like this game, but I wish it had splitscreen multiplayer.
It does
I would love how the car would blow up after using the boost to much
Very good game, but Pacific Rift and Apocalypse are even better. They are near perfect, honestly! Onrush which is basically Motorstorm for PS4 is pretty good too.
Sad to see that we went from this to Onrush.
Don’t forget about Dirt 5…
MS arctic edge should be next☺️
I still hope the Motorstorm games get a port to PC at some point, I know it's super unlikely but one can hope right? I mean we're never going to get Split/Second 2 so why not?
Motorstorm rocks, Sony are really missing out on their strong IPs.
The first one was good but Pacific Rift was a fuckin Diamond. So good.
Bro listed all the problems the team went on to fix. If this wasn't a good series, then fuck, I don't know what is
You got the game, but weren't able to get the patches in order to access the DLC? Welcome to the future of ALL games.
I love motorstorm, the 2nd game Pacific Rift is the best of the series.
Dlc motorstorm works now since online has been reivied
Who played Rumble Racing? What about Smuggler's Run?
Loved this game so much
This game kicked ass
We need DRIVECLUB remake
This game 🎮 I saw on ps3 demo at walmart I was very impressed an sold me to get a ps3 replacing my ps2
Sony abandoned a lot of good franchises that came out during the ps3 era. I’d love for motorstorm and resistance to make a comeback
hey man can you review clive barker series
