  • Could putting your pronouns on your resume negatively impact your chances of getting a job?
According to a new study out of the University of Toronto, job candidates who included “they/them” pronouns on their resumes are much more likely to be seen negatively by prospective employers than presumed cisgender candidates.
From May to October 2023, researchers submitted nearly 8,000 resumes in pairs to job postings in 15 occupations across six U.S. cities. The resumes in each pair were mostly identical in qualifications, background, type of name and all that … except for one thing: one included pronouns, and one did not.
While researchers submitted resumes with she/her, he/him and they/them pronouns as part of the “includes pronouns group”, overall, they found that on average, disclosing “they/them” pronouns on a resume reduces positive employer response by 5.4 percentage points compared to applicants who do not disclose their pronouns at all.
