the song can be traced back to a hymn called "I'll Overcome Someday" that was composed in the early 20th century by African American Methodist minister Rev. Charles Albert Tindley. The melody of "I'll Overcome Someday" bears a striking resemblance to the melody of "We Shall Overcome."

I love this so much, it gives us in Europe the believing that peace will come back in Ukraine. i must cry when I hear it. Peter Seegers song is timeless and you sing it with so much feelings. thank you for that song to you and all in the Band...thanks, love it ❤❤❤
"We shall overcome We shall overcome We shall overcome some day Oh, deep in my heart I do believe We shall overcome some day" ... Love will come to these dark times! Thank you Bruce.!!
"We Shall Overcome" is a gospel song that is associated heavily with the U.S. civil rights movement. The origins of the song are unclear; it was thought to have descended from "I'll Overcome Some Day," a hymn by Charles Albert Tindley, while the modern version of the song was first said to have been sung by tobacco workers led by Lucille Simmons during the 1945-1946 Charleston Cigar Factory strike in Charleston, South Carolina.
6th March 2022 I've come here today to find inspiration for a performance later this week when I hope we folkies can demonstrate solidarity with the residents of Ukraine.
I hope so much that this will be, that we all walk Hand in Hand against this war....my heart is with Ukraine...thank you Bruce, for make me always feel good.
A couple years ago, on the 17th of November, my father listened to this twice. We're Czech. And he "was there" in November 1989 (I was less than two years old at the time), and this song, in the Czech version, was there. He never said anything, but I thought, those couple years ago, it said something about this version that father listened to this particular one on that particular day, twice... and I can't very well seperate the two since. Nor do I want to, because I think Bruce Springsteen wouldn't mind if he knew. So I'm posting this here because it's yet another facet of this song's history that maybe not everyone knows. :-) The Czech version in question was originally sung by Spirituál kvintet - they're one of the, if not the, longest-running Czech bands, since 1960 (and most of the time not as a quintet but the name stuck), although now only one original member remains. They play(ed) a lot of American songs; but also Czech folk music, historical songs, that overall sort of folk - not too unlike what Springsteen did with the Seeger Sessions, really, just a bit easier on the instrumentation. And they played with Pete Seeger when he was here in 1964; I'm guessing that's where they picked up the song. By their own recollection, they got fed up with it after years of it being sung everywhere, but then the events rather reconciled them to it...
This phenomenal song waa sung by Peter Paul & Mary 60s folk group @ MLK Jr. March on D.C.1963. It one of greatest moments in history. Song became popular during Civil Rights Movement of the 1959- 60s. ✌ 🕊 💖 🦅 🌊 Correction: I'll Overcome Some Day" was a hymn or gospel music composition by the Reverend Charles Abbott Tindley of Philadelphia that was first published in 1900. Pete Seeger & Guy Carawan version of the song became associated with the CIVIL RIGHTS Movement. Many artists have covered Pete Seeger and Guy Carawan's version of "We Shall Overcome!!"

Sentimental Lady05 They would have definitely been laughing at you if you had left your original comment in claiming Pete Seeger was a member of Peter, Paul and Mary.

Bién, a mi me emociona, no podría cantarlo.
