Matt: "Things are crazy right now. Everyone stay safe and healthy."
Me: "Ah, it has begun." *sad face*
That’s where I am now. Knowing that it was coming. We’ve survived history and that’s just insane
That really hit me
I’ll remember the day I got sent home from work in 2020 forever. Another one of those moments that defines a generation.
I am also watching for the first time in 2023, is it weird that I feel a strange kind of ptsd watching this, knowing what everyone in the world is about to go through?
@@Vanessa__Pauls not weird at all, I feel it, too. It's still such a hard moment in time to look back on, still trying to carry on as normal when everything was about to come to a crashing halt.
Most D&D players and also the 5e devs: "Poison is almost never used, so this monk ability isn't really that OP."
Matt Mercer: "IT'S ALL POISON! *ALL OF IT!* "
ASquared Mark Of a good dm if you ask me, incorporating things your players are strong against to make them feel strong
Honestly it's a big misconception. Poison is a bad damage type for a player character, because there are many monsters, who are resistant or immune. Many of those are resistant or immune because they are poisonous themselves.
I wonder if Beau has realised that she can never get drunk again being immune to poisons.
@@jayclinton2801 I hope she realizes that soon
@@jayclinton2801 I count the poisoned condition as being hungover rather than drunk, the paladin in the game i DM uses lay on hands to cure hungovers for the party.

I feel like Fjord is like a child stuck in a custody battle and Uk'otoa and The Wildmother are divorced parents.
Honestly he just needs to go ham at this point and sell his soul to like a dozen entities Dresden Files style.
@@AGrumpyPanda I mean the Wildmother is like the parent he wants to stay with and Uk'otoa is like the drunk dad that tries to drag the kid back into the car.
@@AGrumpyPanda At this point he might as well, they both have the same kind of luck with everything anyway.

At least they got to celebrate their anniversary before everything went down
Yes. I'm rewatching it today... And i was like "fuck it was the 5 years anniversary !"

I love how the “dark skies of Xhoras” was built up as this ominous evil influence is actually just a necessity for the drow to be able to see
The entire xhorhas thing has been really interesting, all the species that were seen as monsters by everyone in the empire, gnolls, bugbears etc. Turn out to to be people just everyone else.

And proceeds to hide in it adorably
Liam does that kind of thing for almost every dress up day and it never gets old lol
To be fair, Travis wore a t-shirt with a tuxedo print... not the most dressed up he's been XD
Matt’s description of the Revivify was the longest one minute rollercoaster ride I’ve ever been on. The diamond turns to dust, did it fail? No, there are vines it succeeded - wait no the vines died it failed - wait the wound is partially healed is that a success or not - he’s breathing thank the Wildmother
No, that's literally how Revivify works... you consume diamonds for the cost, you do not get fully recovered, usually only up to 1 HP, and there's a chance of it failing though its incredibly low if you haven't died prior before...
@@Blizz3112 Well, there's a chance of it failing with Mercer's homebrew.
Fun fact: the DC was 10, Cad has a +5 and he rolled a 6. Cutting it pretty damn close!
@@django3422 Yep. Rules as written, Revivify doesn't have a DC or a stipulation that the target hasn't previously died, so Revivify should work every time as long as the spellcaster has the required materials and the target hasn't been dead longer than one minute. Matt just homebrews that Revivify has a DC and a stipulation of the target having not already died in his campaigns.
@@rhysiare i personally enjoy his take. It adds a bit of stress to high level gaming because they aren't invincible. They must still fear death no matter what level they are.

NEW EPISODE NEXT THURSDAY!!!!
The greatest challenge M9 has ever encountered: *waiting a few hours with nothing to do*
Chaos Crew
"I would like to scry on the very being who gives me the ability to scry!"
I was thinking this too :p For the ADHD party that compulsively runs head-first into chaos, I think sitting quietly and doing nothing really was a test of character and a good final challenge for ending the war.
I really can't believe that Laura actually tried to scry on her own deity. Absolutely hilarious
With the way cleric magic works in Matt's campaign, yeah. Where the deity is directly involved *when they cast,* rather than granting power at the start of the day to weave magic. If it worked the other way, and the casting really only involved the caster, then it would make sense.
Interesting consequence of what seemed like purely a flavour choice until some of the recent Traveller stuff (and being able to have side conversations with him during Scrying.)
Hopefully it would of been Scryception on a endless loop to have a goof on Jester
@@Peter_Cordes But is it the actual deity helping them or just a projection of their consciousness? If it’s just a projection then they still have a physical location
@@samreid6010 - I think we later learned that The Traveller could be in multiple places at once, like also having a drink and conversation while he's busy helping Jester. But it didn't seem like purely a projection.
Some more info does come up later in the campaign about how Artagan is able to manifest his presence around Jester, but I don't want to spoil it here since I'm not sure it directly settles this.
@@Peter_Cordes Matt's description of the spell taking effect with direct contact with the deity is indeed flavor, but in terms of mechanics, divine casters per their description---and clerics especially---don't have powers themselves. They are granted powers from their gods, who are aware of how they use them and can take them away in case of misuse, so it makes sense that it would be flagged and come to the attention of even a less directly involved god as a direct offense. She is lucky her god is the Traveller and not one with less of a sense of humor... (see Pike in C1, who got a dour warning from Sarenrae and got close to losing her powers after unnecessarily slitting the throat of an unconscious Duergar and some other gratuitously violent acts that went against her god's alignment). Another way to deal with it, if you don't want to get into the details with the player, is to just say it can't work because a god would never fail that wisdom save anyway.
Travis to Matt: "did you just roll dice?"
Matt: *shakes head, pokerface grin stuffs*
Subtitles: Okay, all righty (dice rolls)
I died.
The amount of SIDE EYES Travis was giving Matt after that was incredible. Not a shred of trust!
1:32:20, and i love how you can literally see him ever so slightly grin, he's trying SO hard not to smile... also as soon as Travis asks that, Laura looks right at Matt and starts smiling... no one else the wiser
1:32:22 MATT: Okay, all righty. (die roll) 6 seconds later TRAVIS: Did you just roll dice? MATT: Hmm? TRAVIS: Did you just roll dice? MATT: (negative) Mm-mm. 5 seconds later Start staring each other down (you fucking did Matt)
these kind of interactions make watching the streams and videos so much better than the podcasts
Travis: “I don’t wanna right a sea dragon” Matt 15 minutes later: “hey guys check out this sea dragon”
My take-away from 5+ years binge-watched within less than 12 months: Liam really has the best sweaters and I want them all.
Agreed!!!! I am so very jealous!
I'm here with you. I started last july and i WILL catch up before this one starts.
Also i want half of Tal's shirts as well
Maybe the best sweaters, but Tal has the best jackets.
Me but with Talesin's clothes
9 months for me!
I never thought i'd see the day that a cleric didnt prepare cure wounds and the absolute joy on sam's face when that happened ;D
Cure Wounds is not that good a spell in combat; her choice of Healing Word does make a lot of sense.
(Although if you're going to skip it, you'd normally want to prepare something for out-of-combat healing like Prayer of Healing or Mass Cure Wounds, which I'm guessing she didn't :P Probably not expecting more than 1 fight to happen that day, if any did, and was ready for various possible things. I'm curious what she did prepare.)
Combat healing in 5e is so weak compared to the damage being thrown around that it's much better to spend spells/actions preventing damage in the first place, although Jester usually goes for straight damage, not hold person or area crowd control. Or to pre-buff ahead of combat if you know it's coming, e.g. Aid and/or something for temp HP. She did buy a gemmed bowl for Hero's Feast last time they shopped.
(Blade Barrier is a good mix of damage and control, if there's a place to use it to block out some enemies.)
I'm 100% on board with how Jester plays a Trickery cleric. (Except for one time during the final Obann fight, when she didn't heal Beau while she was already unconscious and had one failed death save, leading to other players wasting actions trying to help.)
5e clerics are not healing specialists (except for Life domain or a couple others that get bonuses to their healing spells), and can do damage as effectively as most other classes. I hope Sam realizes that and is just doing it for laughs, but sometimes when Laura says she's a "bad cleric" it seems like she's not joking.
Brian Foster's comparison to "battle Mercy" works very badly with the way Overwatch vs. DnD 5e are designed / tuned.
@@Peter_Cordes Yeah, 5e clerics are very versatile and it's entirely possible to make an effective cleric that does very little healing and Laura has a solid grasp on the action economy of combat healing that everyone pestering her about not doing it seems to lack.
@@majere666 or, maybe, shes grown reliant on someone else?
@@vanyelwolfshadow8276 I don't think she's reliant. I think it's a conscious choice. In one of the "Talks Machina" episodes she talks about how she wanted to be a warlock but Travis also wanted to be a warlock. So this was her compromise. She decided to play an offensive cleric. I think it is a cool (if sometimes not so optimal) way of playing the game. I generally agree with much of what Peter said above.
Isn't it poetic that they paused at NEINty NEIN episodes?

I am getting sick of Veth and Beau acting like some vigilantes. Most of their party has down really messed up things. Including just a few days ago Nott was going to make a deal to sabotage the entire peace talk to get her cursed removed and cost the lives of many more people. Everytime she speaks up is just hypocrisy that somebody needs to bring up and get her off that damn high horse.
@@kinghoenn3478 I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. The best villains believe that they are the secret heroes.
If there talking about war crimes then the M9 are as well. They told the dynasty about a secret military move that cost the lives of a lot of soldiers all to gain favor with the bright queen. Mr.Clay is the only one who understands the full scope of it and the hypocrisy of Veth and Beau. I have a feeling if they keep pushing this, Cad may end up snapping at them and give them a hard wake up they very badly need or even better it comes from Caleb. He sees Essek can redeem himself which he sees a kindred spirit and hopes that maybe one day he can do that as well.
@@kinghoenn3478 couldn't have said it better myself. It's funny, I realised a few episodes back that the m9 is an international special interest group that interferes with the politics of native populations to suit their own idea of justice and good. If they follow the whims of Veth and Beau, their "righteous" slaughter will just create a vaccum for the next Cerberus assembly to come along.
Also Beau, Caleb, and Veth are all citizens of the Empire. They have all in simple terms committed treason during their adventures at heavy cost to the empire in terms of lives and resources. If anybody has broken any laws it would have been them. It is the three of them that have been the most vocal about Essek and that situation he is in. The group thinks there above laws and whatnot, which is a very common DnD player mindset. But still they think there brand of justice is correct and everybody should bow to their mindset. Cad can see through the BS and I have a feeling Fjord has similar feelings but staying out of it. Jester seems to be leaning that way as well. Yasha comes off as wanting little a part of it as possible as she is still coming down off her own personal drama/ rampage that left a lot of innocent people dead.

Imagine if Caleb just hands the amber to Yussa and asks him to hide it in the most inaccessible place he can find within the Happy Fun Ball. *No one will ever find the last orb, because it will be within an amber, locked behind a spell, hidden within a near endless and deadly maze made to combat magic users (Warlocks included), hidden within a puzzle ball, hidden within an archmages tower, more than 500 feet from the coast, in a very populated area. It’ll be safe for a very long time*
Or! OOOOOOORRRRRRRR!!! Yussa just puts it on his shelf as part of a pair of book ends. but the legend says it's in the happy fun ball.
I mean this sounds like a decent D&D campaign...
Inside a dreadnought
I think they should find the Divine Gate & hand it over to God to keep it out of mortal hands altogether. 😇✌😷
@@nephicus339 I personally love the concept of hiding it in plain sight. But we are talking about a world were detect magic is a thing. And the inside of a wizards tower is exactly where you fire that spell off.

With the way Essik responded with "Thank you for not throwing me into the water...", I feel like he needs a reminder that Veth told him "Welcome to the Mighty Nein." He sounds so worried and depressed that he really needs something cheering up. A hug from Jester might be simple enough, but in any case, he should be reassured that he's not alone anymore.
I think the "welcome to the mighty nein" was the live show frenzy speaking. The whole cast seems a lot more "dramatic" when performing in front of a crowd, some things get exagerated; at least that's what I tought from the way they completely changed their behaviour on the next episode, they were a lot more suspicious of Essek. They probably talked amongst them in between the episodes and decided to take that trust and confidence down a notch.
@@delightfulbanana I would say their trust of Essik is more character specific. Caleb seems to only barely trust him, in so far as he won't work against his own interests, while Veth was more forgiving, and the others were of various other positions on the subject. Though yes that seems to have shifted farther toward distrust this episode than last.
Andrea Biagioni I like to think that the characters were all a little tipsy from the big party

Caleb and Yasha moments are entirely too sparse. I love the utter trust and understanding that they share due to their own pains. It was like this deep connection from the very beginning of the show that no one quite expected
I agree. And I love that Liam revealed that he sometimes will reach out to orchestrate moments with Yasha, because Ashley is shy and won't always put herself forward. So him doing so (repeatedly) is so wonderful for me here, and it has led to some of my favorite moments. Caleb and Yasha understand love and guilt like few other M9 members.
@@paramitch something happened between C2 and C3 with Ashley. Her roleplay has become so much more... Authentic and creative with Fearne. Still soft spoken and understated, but with the spirit of chaos and humor (hopefully inspired by watching Laura play Jester!).
I agree, I loved the first shaving scene. In fact I was kinda hoping they would get together, but that was before she revealed she was gay. 😔
@@Margar02 Personally, I just feel like she found out she wanted from dnd after campaign 2. She tried a more serious character with a tragic backstory, but tbh I don’t think she liked roleplaying that as much as the times she got to do crazy stuff for fun. So I think she doubled down on being a goofball with Fearne, which is fine by me because as much I LOVE serious roleplay, it should still be what the players want to do
@@frodrickfronkenstien582 You are so not alone there my friend. I SPECIFICALLY got into Critical Role because I saw the clip where Caleb and Yasha hugged, and then Jester drew a picture of Yasha wrapping her wings around him. It had no context of her being gay, so I thought it was one of the most romantic scenes of dnd I’ve ever seen 😂 Seems I was quite wrong lol!

For a minute there during the Traveler scry, I imagined the traveler was gonna show up behind her and it was gonna be one of those infinite Droste effect scenes where she sees the traveler seeing her, seeing the traveler, behind her, seeing the traveler, etc.
But what about a Ghost type interaction? No?
That sounds exactly like the kind of thing a trickster might do, especially if it were to cause Jester some discomfort (e.g. do a bit of psychic damage).

Travis: "Did you just roll dice?"

Gentle Repose is an underrated spell. Dont have 300 GP of diamonds? Well, you got 2 weeks now. Need to keep the head of the bad guy for another round of speak with dead in a week? Boom. I was part of a session where a cleric player used it to prevent a lich rising. Really useful.
Also you can recast it so potentially you can get 10 castings before the 1 minute time limit for Revivify expires, for a whooping total of 100 days to get that diamond
They prevented a mage from rising to Lichdom with a simple Gentle Repose? That's _brilliant!_
@@jpereda97 If I were Dm'ing I wouldn't let it stack. But I would let you re-cast it every 10 days indefinitely, so basically the same.
Hey another use, mainly RP would be to cast it on your food to halt organic decay, aka staleness. Tired of eating "rations?" Pack up some home-cooked meals, fresh as the moment they were made! Re-heat with prestidigitation and you're good to go.
@@elbruces I didn't mean to stack it, I was assuming that each recast would have to happen once the previous Gentle Repose had happened, but thinking about it now it really doesn't have to, you're right.
Also the spell requires you to put a coin and a pinch of salt on each eye of the corpse, so rules-as-written it wouldn't work on food unless maybe you're carrying a whole roasted pig or something, but I've always liked that idea
@@jpereda97 RAW also allows you to use a focus in place of material components, so. If a GM IS disallowing a fun and non-harmful flavor use of a spell over that much of a quibble in interpretation, their campaign probably isn't much fun anyway.

God watching this in 2022 knowing they're filming the day before lockdown.... this is essentially when the world, as we now know it today, changed. And it was their 5 year anniversary! Anyone else feel like this is kinda a historic episode?
Yes, this is exactly how I feel watching this episode...it takes me right back to that week in 2020 where it felt like we were living out the opening chapters of the Stand or The Day After...everyone mildly aware something is going on in the background but trying to go on with life as usual...and then WHAM it's on us and nothing is ever the same again...
It hurt me in the feels hearing Matt talking about chaotic times in his intro and then using the "P" word for the first time during their five year anniversary.
oh- so thats why the date rang bells to me

i love that even after the essek reveal, the number of times they message essek didn't go down. makes me wonder how essek feels abt it
Like shit probably
Probably very relieved in a sense, he bared his horrible secret and at least Jester hasn't stopped talking to him as a friend
Yeah, I think Veth brought up the idea of eventually punishing Essek because just moments before, the gang were offering him to sleep in the captain's quarters, letting him just teleport on and off their ship at his own discretion, and trying to get him to bring pastries for breakfast.... It's clear that most of M9 still sees him as their fancy floating Xhorhas buddy. Hard to say, but I do wonder if part of that came from the high insight rolls in the previous episodes, which gave the clarification that Essek seemed genuinely regretful, and that he really has come to cherish their friendship. I wonder that, had they not been given that information, would they have been more standoffish with him after the big reveal? I kinda suspect so
Well, what's a little betrayal of trust among friends? ;)
I love that when when Caleb and Matt talk in Zemnian they drop the German accent cause an accent is a result of your native pronunciation of words altering the pronunciations of a learned language so it obviously wouldn’t exist when speaking your native tongue. That’s a great touch.
eh i am sure there could be like twenty different dialects of zemnian and those would give "accents". at least that is what its like in norwegian. trøndersk sound totally different from bergensk. but, then again a german accent is different from a texan accent.
@@Markcrazeer The difference is native vs. second-language accent. Quinn was praising that they switched from a second-language accent to their natural one. I think that's cool, too.
@@RPG_Angie yes i know, i dont get or get trough a lot of the neuances of things i say. obviously i do apreciate the way they do that. but accents do work both this way and that.
It would still be there though. That’s why he has an accent when speaking common, it’s his normal voice. It’s fine they drop it, but I find it weird to think that someone would suddenly lose their accent when speaking their native language, because that’s definitely not how that works.
@@Aplesedjr No, the idea is that your accent is part of your native langauge. The reason that Japanese English speakers often conflate R and L is that in japanese it's a single character pronounced RL. I'm not saying that you're accent disappears when you speak your native langauge. I'm saying its incorporated into your native langauge. A native German speaker speaks German other german people arent immediately drawn to their accent but a native german speaker speaks english and the english speakers notice the accent quite heavily. The way they drop the Zemnian accent when speaking in Zemnian is a nod to that and I think it's a nice touch.

The thing I'm feeling is:
Essek likes Caleb more now, well, he likes all of them more now, and wish that with that peace everything would go normal or better than it was, now he's willing to have friends and try to be more than a nerd loner with a lot to carry in his shoulders
But, as all the mighty nein, Caleb is having a hard time thinking about a just punishment for Essek's crime, and his feelings for him are compromising it, Essek hurt Caleb lying to them, as Caleb said he has trust issues and he finally putted his guard down to Essek, only to get smacked in the face by his crime.
You notice that Essek looks at Caleb with a smile and joke, while Caleb has his face closed trying to not feel for him. I think their papers have turned
I'm sad :(
Caleb also sees a lot of himself in Essek so when the group goes on about Essek deserving punishment and not getting away easy, I think its reminding him what he thinks he deserves. "How can they forgive me if they can't forgive Essek?" Is probably going through his head.
Stahp! My heart...
There could still be hope for them, though
@@waypastthenorm8629 That was my read. They were essentially going on and on about how terrible actions require retribution and not forgiveness. None of them seemed to be considering Caleb's past actions, and how the logical conclusion to their statements was that Caleb needs to be punished or there is no justice. In truth, they just have a habit of not being consistent in their opinions relating to their in-groups (the PCs) and their out-groups (everyone else). For example, they are extremely judgemental of anyone else that lies or uses a disguise, despite those being things the Mighty Nein does constantly. I was surprised to hear it coming from Veth, who not only saw continuing the war as a reasonable trade for her halfing-form and was the one who invited Essek to the Mighty Nein because he was just like them.
I think their punishment for him shout be forcing him to tag along for a month

Yeah, that's some next level tactics for a cleric in a group with another clreic. Like seriously now. Cure wounds isn't even as good as healing word in my opinion. Healing isn't super efficient in 5e, so a quick ranged bonus action spell isnt worse than a one with slightly more healing that's an action and touch based.

One of the best things I've heard a character say is when Cad tells Veth that they are on that list of people responsible for the war as well. It is hard to forget but the M9 has several Imperial citizens who technically committed treason by selling out the counterattack on Blade Garden so many episodes ago. They were trying to gain influence to steer the war in their favor and accepted money and home in the "enemy" land.
I just thought it was brilliant. The team has been getting slightly better about not just using force and violence and threats to solve problems; but they have made some mistakes too. This sudden burst of some of them seeming to lean into "punishing" those who used war for their own ends seems a little naive to me. I like the team and have grown to like the playstyle of this campaign too. But I do worry for what happens when some of their choices come back to them.
Also Veth holds a big grudge on Essek for "starting" the war, for being someone who was at least considering prolonging the war for her own goals with the hag.
Maybe I missed something, but we've heard several times that the beacons were only the spark that set off the powder keg, the war may have happened anyway without Essek's involvement.
@@StratovariusFTW True. I kinda worry what happens with these guys when some of their actions are learned by certain NPCs.
For Veth personally, I feel like there’s underlying need for someone to pay. Without knowing more details, she was bullied growing up, that (presumably) stopped when she started dating Yeza but she did not say there was ever a resolution. Then the witch happened, turned her life to hell, and they didn’t get to do anything to the goblins, then Jester ended up befriending the hag. She now has the power to fight back and no one to channel that fight towards. Essek’s betrayal just happened to happen be the first thing she could focus her resentment on. At least that what I felt from Sam’s portrayal, for all I know he could just be itching to be a ninja assassin...:-D
Edited: just had another thought. Throughout Yasha’s thing with Obann, Nott/Veth was always suspicious of Yasha even after they defeated Obann and Yasha was back to herself. I would love to sneak a peek on Nott/Veth character sheet to see the background portion to see the basic flaws and stuff
They did not tho, the war already started by that point (unless im thinking of the wrong moment)
Yeah also I feel like Caleb soft defended Essek because he sees himself in Essek. ;-; veth and beau are like “likes punish him because he did this evil thing” Idk i just have sad feels about that bro like imagine thinking you’re a shitty person and then your friends love you and help you be happier and then you see yourself in someone else and want to help them the way your friends helped you, but your friends want to punish them. (I know killing your family from memory modification isn’t the same as starting a war that was bound to start anyway, but I think in Caleb’s mind it would be the same based on how he talks about killing his family.)
