They started with 4 members, and after several top hits and losing original members, they added 4 back-up singers to be Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
You're right about it changing from Four Seasons to Frankie and the Four Seasons but wouldn't say that's entirely right, it's only in the last decade or two that they started just having backing singers. Before that, it was very much still replacements of defined roles. You can see this if you compare the Atlantic city concert (with Tim Stone and three of the band members in this video, Larry, Chuck and Rex) where they all have their defined instrumental roles and parts in each song the same as the original members with a performance from say 2020, where they are just four backing singers.

They were originally the Four Lovers before they renamed themselves Four Seasons. The original group had only 4 members.

I'm studying Doo-Wop and 50's style music for a book I am writing and came across this. I had the Marcel's version as a child, but it's a long time since I heard this tune. Loving their version, all such great voices. Thanks for posting this.

They were the four seasons when they started, when there was still only four of them. After years of performing the other three stopped performing. They found four other guys to become the Four Seasons and then it became Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. This is what they are in this video.

In this video, Nick, Tommy and Bob had all left for various reasons and rather than be just the Four Seasons, Frankie Valli carried on and the group was turned into Frankie Valli AND The Four Seasons.

I wonder what it would sound like if they broke up the rhythms more to get a fuller sound. It sounds fine. There's just some dead spaces of no sound cause they're all on the same beat and maybe a different arrangement could fill that in easily with 5 people to use. Maybe some other people have taken something good like this and expanded on it. I'll have to look around cause the song is great.

Frankie is the only original of the Four Seasons there. The other 4 guys were just there to back him up. And there were 4 guys as the orignal Four Seasons, Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Nick Massi, and Bob Gaudio.
This was not the original, but yet, Frankie Valli was the one singing. The original line up was only four: Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi, Tommy De Vito and Frankie Valli. But the three left and Frankie Valli remained. Then they added four other members and so they became Frankie Valli and the four seasons.

Four Seasons = 4,
