Hi we just wanted to say that we absolutely love your channel and your vision for your beautiful new property. Your fur babies obviously love you as well. My favourite flower is the rose, so I will be watching with 🥰 great interest for your future plantings. Also, I wanted to tell you that you have a lovely voice which is both relaxing and professional and therefore makes for easy viewing. Thank you, sincerely for bringing great joy to our lives, and by the way you made a very very good choice in purchasing your amazing property. Loved the drone footage on the opening scene which was a favourite of mine. You were meant to be doing what you are doing in life, I truly believe this, but please take care of yourself…………..Love your work………..
    Your friends from Australia.

I love Plum Perfect - I have had 2 and recently added 2 more. Very healthy and lots of blooms. I am in TX zone 9b and it grows bigger - 4-5ft. I also have some of the others you’ve mentioned - Olivia Rose Austin and All Dressed Up, Koko Loko, South Africa and Distant Drums - great choices! Looking forward to seeing your rose garden established 😊

Wherever we are in the world right now, it seems too cold or too hot. So after spending time indoors watching the English series 'Belgravia' I saw a lovely English cut flower garden. The storyline would like us to think the head gardener at the renowned Kew Gardens designed some of this lady's garden at her country house. Interestingly, he designed every corner of the garden. And there is of course, a rose garden: Episode 4 @ 28.37.
Closer to you, Homeworthy: Best Garden Designs Ideas/Top 5 @ 15.06 has a climbing rose design that could be exquisite on your property.

I am so glad you covered own root roses. There are You Tubers that have made videos stating that grafted roses are the best, which is not the case for everyone. Plum Perfect does not have a lot of fragrance, but it is beautiful! I ordered All Dressed Up too. South Africa is very heat tolerant and is very healthy!! The fragrance of Oklahoma’s large blooms is very lovely ! Great list!

Last year, i bought over 15 roses and almost every one of those you mentioned, i have. From olivia, poet's wife, tranquility, to distant drums. All were bare roots, except for distant drums. It was a slow bloomer, but i expect it to pick up this year. The flowers, like you mentioned are gorgeous, and seem to morph with the weather daily. I simply loved it! I have mine in pots on the patio and right now, they're all exposed to the elements. We'll see which ones make it. I already pre ordered a few annuals, so I'm curious to see what's on your list too.

We have a Lily too. 🥰 our fur babies full name is Lady Lily-Grace. This is because she was already named ‘Lady’ when we adopted her when she was 6. We didn’t want to confuse her, but we really wanted to give her my Great Grandmothers name ‘Lily-Grace’, hence how long her name is. 😂 Long winded explanation I know. 😝

I don't have many roses, but over the last ten years or so I have always bought them from Heirloom roses. I am definitely a convert to own-root and Heirloom's plants have always done well for me (6b-7a). I bought a Lady of Shallott and New Dawn for this year. If you are looking for a tough, beautiful pink climber, Eden Climber is great.

Roses are why I got into gardening. I remember you saying in a video shortly after I discovered your channel that they aren’t really your thing (glad that changed). I just shook my head because how can anyone not love roses but I guess if Valentine’s Day is the only reference you have for roses I can understand. I don’t love hybrid tea roses or the average cut rose you find in the grocery store. I do like the fluffy peony like roses that smell good tho. This time of year it’s hard to not impulse buy because I miss the summer flowers so much. The wiser choice would be to buy a bouquet instead of more roses. I have close to fifty and that is way more than I ever anticipated. I think I’m done tho. I don’t want to have to buy equipment to take care of them 😂

I got All Dressed Up last summer from Heirloom Roses because I kept seeing it pop out in the background of Garden Answer's videos and it just seem like a star each time for months. It is a gorgeous, clear pink in person. I was disappointed in the size of the plant I received, it had a very narrow trunk. But I did get a few small blooms within the first season. Looked a little sad this fall, but hoping it explodes with growth this year. I can already see multiple growth points on the stems.

I brought many roses from Heirloom. It usually take a year to get itself established but by third year they grow faster than I can cut them. The good thing about their roses is that you have a better overall plant due to its from its own root.

Really good choices! Do watch out for Madame Anisette though. I ran into it at the local rose garden (I'm in Columbus, OH so also zone 6) and it was up to over 6ft high. After asking around some of the Facebook rose groups, others have also said this one gets higher than what is posted on Heirloom. Just a heads up there.

Beautiful drone footage at the beginning! Lily is so pretty!! I'm looking forward to seeing your choices in your garden! My first Heirloom roses that I ordered last year performed wonderfully, so I couldn't wait to order more this year. I'm also adding my first solid red this year. This year I've ordered Honey Dijon, Elle and Deep Secret to create rows. Their 2024 catalog they sent me is loaded with choices and their website is super easy to narrow down what kind of rose and size you're wanting and in the color you're seeking. It was overwhelming to me trying to decide on color. My daughter picked Honey Dijon. Turns out it's a popular one! I then finally decided on Dolly Parton and Marilyn Monroe, but they were sold out, so I'm going with Elle (for my sweet pup Ellie) and Deep Secret to complement Honey Dijon. We'll see how it goes. I"m excited to get them all in March. I found Dolly and Marilyn in a grafted rose, but I"m too leary with the arctic temps we've been getting the past few years. I just don't want to chance losing them to the cold and then the root stalk producing a rose I did not want.

I too had the wrong rose shipped to me. It was labeled as what it was, but didnt realize it til after it was planted and decided to keep it. It was Desdemona and I am SO happy I kept it. In the past hadn't had the best luck with white roses, but this one took off and is an amazing bloomer. I'm ordering another for the newest section of my garden. I think I mentioned before, but if looking for another yellow (a deep yellow) Golden Celebration is a hardy, prolific bloomer. I cant wait to get distant drums (on order from Heirloom) - usually only order DA or Kordes, but this was too beautiful to pass up. The catalog seems to be on back order. Ordered mine about 6 weeks ago and still no sightings. Can't wait to see your new babies in your garden!!

I've been yearning for 'Lady of Shallot' for several years, but living in Minneapolis, I was afraid what I'd receive from DA wouldn't be on own-root stock. Looks like maybe now I can get what I want through this company.
Do you get Japanese beetles? Ever since I planted 3 'Queen of Sweden' (to honor my mom and her 2 sisters who are half Swedish) I've been besieged by the pests.
I ordered organza drawstring bags to place over the blooms this year. Not a desirable look, but neither are chewed blooms. 🌹

Japanese beetles are tough! I didn’t personally have an issue in the prior garden so it’s a very regional issue depending on your location. I’m hoping I can avoid those problems here as well, but I’ve heard neem oil can be effective which is the primary ingredient in RoseRx by Bonide.

I didn’t have any issues with them at my last garden. I still think it must be regional. I’m not sure about here, so we will see.

Is there any way to prevent rose rosette?

Rose rosette can't be prevented. But, good pruning practices (cleaning tools between shrubs) can help. Rose rosette is carried by a mite, so if you suspect or have a confirmed case of rose rosette (and have other roses in your garden near the affected rose) it is best to remove the affected rose immediately taking precautions during removal (I have a video on one I removed at the last home). Otherwise you could risk spreading the disease to other roses in your garden over time.

Hi, thank you for doing this video. How’d you compare David Austin”s 2 qt potted plants vs plants from heirloom roses? Have you grown the 2 qt roses? If so, how long it takes to grow to the size of heirloom roses?

I have ordered one potted rose from David Austin online many years ago and it did not survive winter. I no longer order roses from David Austin online in general because I have received multiple shipments of bareroot roses with an incorrect variety (at least 3 times). Because of the way David Austin offers their roses and our seasons, if you receive an incorrect rose you don't know it's the wrong variety until it blooms, which is then unavailable for reorder from David Austin. David Austin always made it right, but you then have to wait an entire year to do so if you don't want to accept a very small 2qt rose, which is unacceptable to me. Long time followers of my channel have watched me remove a David Austin rose that was the incorrect variety shipped to me because it did not exhibit the color, vigor, and other characteristics of the rose I ordered. I've ordered 5-6x as many roses from Heirloom Roses and never received a wrong variety. I've talked to others and they have also received wrong roses in previous orders from David Austin, so it is a widespread issue (or was). Unfortunately I can't recommend purchasing from them based on my own experiences, and I order my David Austin roses from HeirloomRoses.com.

@@SouthernersGarden thank you for your thorough response. It validated my decisions and I think you make a an amazing ambassador for them. Do you know why they carry all the item? For example eustacia vye and boscobel. You should encourage them to carry more such varieties. Thanks again and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

They only carry varieties that meet their quality standards and fit into their program. I do know Eustacia Vye is coming soon. I’m hopeful for next year because I grew that variety at my last home.
