Wow - I've been gardening for over 50 years, even studied horticulture at the college level AND went through the California Master Gardener program and I must say your videos and information are top notch - thanks!
Dig hole. Add to hole 1 part peat moss, 1 part living or good soil (no granular fertilizer soil mix), 1 cup bone meal and 1/2 bag worm castings. Mix it up. Start holes before roses arrive to break up planting process. Use rose box to make weed barrier around rose cutting triangles where canes come out. Water in well with liquid fish fertilizer. ☺
Just got my first roses ever - about to embark on this new journey. The videos make me feel more confident that I can do this. Using the box is brilliant. TY!
Ok, so your plantable, non toxic cardboard makes me very happy ! I started using all our cardboard to suppress weeds and feed worms and I love it. It’s so important to waste less and I really applaud you guys for thinking of this green detail! Way to go I am so excited to get my 2 Jude the Obscure from you guys and now I know exactly how to prepare for their utmost success ! Bravo !!!!! ~ Rachel
Got my roses! I have gotten “own root” roses from other companies previously but without question these are the best packed and the best “own root” specimens I have ever seen.
I'm really glad that I just watched this video, in a couple weeks I'm heading to Tombstone Arizona where the world's largest rose bush is and I'm going to get two or three rose bush cuttings and thanks to you now I know how to correctly plant them!
Great tutorial!!! My roses will be coming from you in a couple of weeks!!! Can't wait. Thanks for sharing. All the best! lol, yes it is stinky and like you I love it for plants.
I have never tried own root Rose's, I've always bought grafted roses, either from local nursery, or Jackson Perkins or others on line. But, I've watched a few of your videos recently. I will order a few roses next spring from you guys. I've lost grafted roses in the past, when I'm pretty sure I did nothing wrong. So, I may try a few of your hybrid tea roses, and see how they do, and how they compare. Thank you, John
Ohh so helpful!! I am expecting 3 rose bushes from Heirloom tomorrow or the next day. Thanks for the info. Yup, I need worm castings and peet moss. I’ve got the bonemeal. Very exciting! I cannot wait as I’ve never planted roses with fragrance before. I just didn’t know. 🍃🌸🍃
Thanks for great video. I just started using fish fertilizer this year and my dog goes crazy! I am on pure sand, so building my base has been quiet w process. Great tip about using the cardboard as weed barrier. I will start using that idea!
My recommendation to you: I wish I had read this BEFORE my roses arrived. I am here suggesting, that when someone order roses from you, with the information that you have received the order to INCLUDE this video and also the video of amending all parts of the garden soil like you did (that I still have to look that you have mentioned at the beginning of this video). So when the roses come, the bigger area has been amended, then an additional amended soil created just before the roses are planted in the created hole. And also use measurements like 1/2 cup instead of part of the bag.
Hi Mr. Hanna! Thank you for this video. It is in much better detail than your video from 6 years ago. Excellent information I sincerely appreciate it! Easy to follow. Instead of tossing in directions maybe you should refer your customers to this video link on the outside of the box? You already referenced it in your emails we receive when our purchase is confirmed. Maybe it would save paper and confusion? Today I received my 4 beautiful rhododendrons but only received information about roses being defoliated due to the heat. My rhododendrons were not defoliated and unfortunately I received no planting instructions for rhododendrons. It would also be easier to update one channel and delete old videos and add new videos than to update all the paper inserts as well as the website and channels when changes occur. I prefer the videos to paper anyway because they are easier to see exactly what, where, and how much you are referencing when you are discussing the plant or materials. The only information I would add to this video is how much fertilizer to use when using the Founders Fish Fertilizer. One last comment I would really appreciate is a video on planting my new rhododendrons that arrived. I read some information you have on the website but I hope it is correct because you are adamant about not using granular fertilizer on new roses but I think the website directs us to use Holy Tone and Cow manure for the Rhododendrons?
Thank you for the suggestions! Cow manure is a soil amendment and not the same as a granular fertilizer. We do recommend only using a liquid fertilizer such as Founders Fish for the rhododendrons as well so as not to burn the roots. You can read more about planting and caring for rhododendrons here on our website: www.heirloomroses.com/info/care/care-for-companion-plants/rho/
I’ll be a first time buyer from you soon, so thank you for the informative video. A few of my older roses need to be replaced. I am interested in rugosa roses as replacements, and you have an extensive collection.
I have river rock with my other plants, instead of mulch. Will this be ok for the four roses Inoredered. Im so nervous!! My forst time trying roses. This video has been everything to help!! Thank you!!
I love the comment he makes about using the fish fertilizer in the house, but however, as long as the wife doesn't know about it. I laughed at that because my wife has a nose as strong as our chocolate lab! Lol. As always, very informative video, you can tell this man definitely has experience with getting his hands dirty.
My 4 roses arrived two days ago along with your Get Growing Bundle and they will be planted today. I’ve been growing roses from various sources for 20 years. These are my first from Heirloom. I’ve scoured your website and your videos and I cannot find a simple set of instructions on how to use the Bundle when planting. I would think something like “1 cup bone meal, 2 cups aged cow manure etc.” would be so useful. There’s no clear information on using the worm castings, mint compost, and fish fertilizer. And as you highly recommend ordering this bundle with new roses, a clear 1, 2, 3 set of steps would be so helpful! Please consider this suggestion. Thanks!
Hello! I am sorry you have had trouble finding the exact direction for using the soil amendments. With soil amendment, since they are not as strong as fertilizers, there isn't as much of a need for such precise measurements. Here is a link to an article on preparing the soil with the amendments. www.heirloomroses.com/info/planting-roses I hope this helps!
Really good video! I'd like to see the written instructions that come with your roses be "corrected" to agree with this video in terms of the details that are different. (I just planted Westerland yesterday.) The printed directions say to make your soil mix outside of the hole rather than IN it. They say, for the bonemeal, to just follow the instructions on your bone meal bag. Mine didn't have any such instructions, so I put in about half a cup. Evidently, could have been at least a full cup! The printed instructions don't mention worm castings, tho I did use some "Living Soil," nor did they advise one to mulch! Then I watered it in. THEN I had to FOLLOW that with the fish. I realize that the printed instructions need to be simpler and shorter, but this video made me want to dig up my Westerland and do it over again. Thanks!
I planted a climbing rose last year and it’s doing great but I do have a type of sedum growing in the same bed. It’s inching closer and closer to the rose. Should I trim it back or is it ok for it to grow around and touch the canes?
Good question! Here is an article with some more information on planting your rose. I hope this helps! heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/planting-roses?_gl=1*adgbzu*_up*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjwtIaVBhBkEiwAsr7-c5wMseuTes2MoWedWu1VYpWHScdno7skEvgby6rbvV1olYwiBlfbyBoC3l8QAvD_BwE
How to take care of my roses on this sweltering triple digits here in Texas for almost a month now? Some of the roses i purchased start to bud and flower but dried quickly.
My roses are to arrive Saturday, zone 6b, but we have had a very, very warm lat fall. Do you recommend that I use the fish fertilizer this late in the season. Normally I don't fertilize late in the season as things will start going dormant. Please advise, should I hold fertilizer until late March early April?
Great question! We recommend using the items in the Get Started Bundle as follows: - Include Bone Meal in the hole when you plant to amend the soil - Include Aged Cow Manure in the hole when you plant to amend the soil - Use the Mint Compost as a top dressing mulch around your plant to help it retain water and deter bugs - Use the Fish Fertilizer regularly throughout the growing season to give your plant the nutrients it needs. Hi I just received my roses and they are going in some big pots ! Can I put mulch (coco mulch) on them because we are in Florida Sarasota and the summers are brutal. Thank you
Good question! Although living soil is not a replacement for peat moss, it does have peat moss already mixed in, so there is no need for peat moss when you use living soil.
Great question! We recommend to stop fertilizing 6-8 weeks before your area's typical first frost date. You can start again in the spring to encourage new growth throughout the growing season. Here is a link with more detailed information as well: heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/fertilize
I bought 6 roses and are expected to arrive tomorrow night ( saturday night) i am working the next 3 nights. How late can i plant those roses? I just realized how much work it requires just digging soil in the backyard that is so hard ( rocky and clay) plus i still have to purchase those soil amendments. I did purchase the fish fertilizer with thise rose though. Also, can i use miracle grow potting soil for container? Thanks for this video.
We recommend planting them as soon as possible, but they should be okay for about two weeks in the pots they are shipped in. Wishing you a happy growing season!
My old rose garden was in a lot of clay but it was a beautiful garden and did GREAT!!! Miss it…Lost it due to our health…age…but real excited to start a Memorial Garden with my new Heirloom roses!!! They will be in a different location this time to enjoy from my screened in porch…Just got seven and very impressed!!!
Hi! We recommend following these steps when planting your hydrangea. Hydrangea can be planted in the spring or fall. Choose a location that is in at least partial shade with well-draining soil. When planting, dig a hole two to three times as wide as the nursery pot, and add a generous heap of organic compost. This compost should replace at least 20% of the soil you will place back around the plant. Loosen the roots of the plant and place it into the hole, ensuring the root ball is above the soil level by about ½-1”. Place the soil and compost back around the plant and tamp it down, ensuring the plant is upright. Water till a large puddle forms and let it slowly soak in. Water again when the topsoil is dry. Top dressing with a thick layer of mulch will keep the soil moist. As a rule of thumb, plant each Hydrangea a minimum of 3’ apart. Hydrangea appreciate a fresh top dressing each growing season and the addition of a slow-release fertilizer such as a 15-10-10 for an extra boost of nutrients. For more info on our collection of hydrangeas, visit our website here. heirloomroses.com/blogs/perennial-plant-care/hydrangea-one-plant-in-different-varieties
Thank you for the details of steps! My soil is really bad & rocky, I dug 2 feet deep but after rain I still see a lot water retained in the pit, what I need to do ?
You might consider a raised garden bed, otherwise replace your soil in a 3'-3' space with a well-draining soil mix and amend around the rose with plenty of organic matter to help break down tough soil.
I don't think groundhogs or moles will attack or eat the roots specifically, however you might try planting your roses in grow bags or covering the beds with landscape fabric to prevent them from digging up and around the roots.
How old is your plant? If it is in its second year or beyond we recommend this fertilizer: heirloomroses.com/collections/heirloom-garden-amendments/products/heirloom-boost-bloom-for-season-two-and-beyond?variant=42964245840057

What kind of mulch is best to lay around the roses?
