Spectacular Swiss Alpine Traverse: Breithorn to Central Breithorn

  • Right after touching down in Zermatt, Switzerland, we were blessed with a rare gift from Mother Earth: a crystal clear day in the Swiss Alps. We seized the opportunity to do climb one of the most famous 4000m peaks in the area known as Breithorn. Given the incredibly clear yet awfully windy weather that day, we decided to continue on after the Breithorn summit and traverse over to Central Breithorn along one of the most epic ridegelines of our lives. This is Swiss alpine hiking at its finest!

      Haha that's actually a really good analogy -- that was probably a lot like what it would be to do Devil's Backbone in the snow! It was quite scary in places, but being roped up and having the ice axes and crampons definitely helps because even if one person falls the partner still has a good chance to belay the slide. ❤️

    Spectacular guys! Your hitting one home run after another on this trip! This one was outstanding. So treacherous! One miss step. Well we don’t want to even go there. You drop your Pop Tart it’s gone forever. I never thought of my sweet, sweet precious Elise as a Bad A**, but Adam you are absolutely right not only on this go around, but through out the history of this channel. Elise you are something else young lady, but I’ll always think of you as my sweet innocent adopted daughter with a very hardcore attitude that fits in keeping with my Jellybean! Stay safe guys! Thanks so much, Larry! Yes I've definitely been feeling that way ever since Mont Blanc. I think making it up that climb took me through whatever mental doubts I'd been having since my back injury, and we've just been going crazy with the hard hikes since then. A couple of times Adam's been like, "should we just take a couple days to rest?" and I'm like, "I need to CLIMB!" So I'm the Bad A** Jellybean for sure on this trip!! ❤️ --E

    Thanks for sharing. My wife is from Zermatt and we have done the Breithorn and the traverse as well. The views are out standing. The 2 peaks just to east Pollux and Castor are also awesome. So many great hikes there. The hike to the Hornli Hut on the Matterhorn is great. A great lunch hike/walk is from Blauherd to Flualp. Amazing views everywhere. Short 30-45 minute hike. Food is awesome. The hike from Rottenboden down to the Glacier is great and you will have a great chance at seeing Steinbock under the Gornergrat. I am so glad you got to Zermatt. As always you two are inspirational.

And then of course Matterhorn, though now we know we need to book the Hornli Hut early. We did get a couple other cool hikes in there, including a crazy traverse attempt from Oberrothorn which we'll edit and show you in a week or two. Already excited to get back and do more next year. I only found your channel today and loving the content so far. I did the Breithorn a few years ago and it was crazy windy then as well, to the point that we were almost lifted off our feet. Great video and looking forward to seeing more.

      Thanks Richard, so happy you found us! That's awesome you were shooting for the Spaghetti Tour -- it's on our bucket list for sure, and we might even try it as soon as next year. And congrats on getting up Breithorn in that wind -- it felt gnarly even on the day we went, which was def not as brutal as the day you went. Well *I* was thinking if one slips off that spine the other better jump off the opposite side, I don' know but I been told that the best conditioning for altitude is to train in the valley then drive up to altitude to sleep nights rather than the other way round. More reliable conditioning and maybe in less than the 3 weeks standard

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад

      Ya that's absolutely true about these spines. You wouldn't exactly jump, but you would definitely throw your weight down the other direction as a counterbalance to stop the person's slide without getting pulled down yourself. That's interesting about sleeping at altitude. The only problem is that it's very hard for many people to sleep up high, so they train high and then drive down a few thousand feet to get a good sleep! ❤️

      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      Thanks Arielle! We got in some nice spa time in Leukerbad too, which really made it feel like vacation as well as adventure. As for the rope, its basically a way to make sure that if one of us slips or trips (most likely Elise, based on our history of hiking together) the other one can dig in ice axe and crampons and stop the slide. Of course, the downside is that if it doesn't work you can both get pulled over the edge. But I'm confident I could stop Elise's slide if it came to it, and pretty confident that she won't need to stop mine, so the rope is worth the hassle when it gets really crazy steep like this. ❤️ --A

      Yes, in fact on Mont Blanc we were both really struggling hard at about 15,000 feet. It wasn't any more technical than Breithorn, but that extra couple thousand feet of elevation really hurt us. We actually just sat down in the snow and rested and ate carbs until we felt we could continue. Did the same thing toward the top of Shasta when we hiked it in that windstorm. Sometimes you just need to sit for a few minutes and eat some sugar -- at least that's our strategy, and it's worked well so far! ❤️

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you, and that's an important question about UV protection in the mountains, especially on reflective snow. We use a sweat-proof broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50, and so far it has done a very good job of protecting us. The only problem we've had was one snowshoe adventure in California last winter when we thought we'd be wearing our thermals and shells, but it got so warm that we went all the way down to our short-sleeve base layer and had forgotten to sunscreen our arms. They got badly sunburned. But even in that environment with reflective snow, at least our faces with the SPF 50 were ok. ❤

    Love it, as always! I probably asked before, but which crampons and boots/shoes are you using? Also, looking at your rope, looks thin. Is that a 7mm? If so, as a climber, I would upgrade to a 9mm dynamic minimum for actually using for belay purposes vs occasionally helping up or down a rough spot. Don't want anything to happen to y'all!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      Ya that's a good eye -- it is 7mm exactly. We obv wouldn't use it for any kind of rock climbing, but it's pretty darn handy for a 10-12 foot snow belay (and much lighter than the thicker dynamic ropes, which means a lot when you're climbing far and at such high altitude). The crampons are just basic Black Diamonds (they have a nice lengthener for my size 13 boots), and the boots of course are our beloved Salomon X-Ultras, which fit the Black Diamonds great (though sadly, will not be warm enough once we graduate to 20,000 foot peaks in the future 😥). --A

      @adventureswithrussellandan7550 Год назад +1

      @LiveHardxLoveHard Yeah, at 20,000' it will be hard to stay warm. Used to ice climb a lot and my feet got cold, even in double plastic boots. You have to keep moving! Hiking and scrambling will probably keep the circulation going better than technical ice though.

It worked out almost that way, but we took nearly two weeks in Austria because we were loving it so much. Of course, then we got to Switzerland and immediately wished we could just live there! • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      That's a fair question. The idea is that the person who doesn't fall will dig in with crampons and ice axe and stop the other person's slide. Of course it doesn't always work that way, and there are definitely cases where both people end up falling. But in our case, we know from experience that I'm about 5 times more likely to slip than Adam, and he is super strong with his ice axe and crampons, so I feel very confident that if I did fall he would be able to stop my slide. If he falls...well, I would do my best. But he's so sure footed and good with gear that the odds of him falling are very low, so we're playing the percentages the right way by roping up. ❤️--E

I've practiced doing belays like this on different slopes, and feel confident I could belay her in these conditions. Now if I were to fall instead of her, it would be a different story...❤ --A

But I'm historically a lot more likely to fall than Adam -- he basically never falls -- and he is very, very strong with his axe and crampons and confident that he could stop my slide. Stunning, stunning, stunning! So cool to see this snow climb in August! Just a question: So were parts of the climb/traverse basically on some cornices? It's hard to get a perspective from the camera shots but figured you have the beta. Oh, and after all these awesome adventures, are you ever going to come back home? 😀

      That's a great question, Dan. Yes there were parts of the traverse on cornices, and although people had definitely broken the trail before us we were still a little worried about one possibly breaking off, which in addition to the wind is why we stopped at Central Breithorn. If we'd felt a little more comfortable that all the cornices in the distance were safe we might have kept on going til dark and then just crashed in the boot room of one of those distant mountain huts! ❤️

    Love the "superfly" sunglasses, Elise. Is there a snow-side to the Matterhorn? The spine was amazing! Looks like they are going through a drought, right? You had incredible weather for these adventures, and I love living vicariously through you ♥

      Ya Bob, the other side of the Matterhorn that we saw from Zermatt is the more famous (and snowy) side. I think we got some cool pics from that side that we'll show you -- it was amazing looking in clear weather!! ❤️ --A

      We just left, and are already missing it! It is now very near the top of our list of places to spend serious time in early retirement -- just amazing in terms of adventuring, and we loved the people too. So jealous that you are going to be there soon! What do you have planned?

      @LiveHardxLoveHard inspired by you two, I'm looking for a via ferrata route, but because that's new for us, an easy route and with guide. And a training ultra of around 50-60k as a preparation for the 50miler I have in September, maybe the Eiger Ultra 51k route, or around Lake Thun. And some biking and hiking in the Berner Oberland, Jungfrau region. Can't wait! 🤩

      @@mholscher Wow talk about inspiration -- the Eiger Ultra looks amazing! Excited to hear which via ferrata you choose, and confident you will master the technique very quickly!! ❤

    WOW beautiful!:) As a momma, do your parents watch and freak out?:)

      Haha that's a good question! My parents used to freak out when my older brother and I used to climb tall trees when we were kids, but at this point they're so used to me doing challenging things that they're okay with it. Plus, they know that Adam always goes first on the sketchy stuff, so he takes more of the risk. For Adam, his aunt Gail loves our videos but she can only watch about half of them. She can't bring herself to watch anything where he's free-soloing or doing a sketchy traverse! ❤️

      Haha there's a whole story behind these shades and we have a lot of laughs about them on the channel, but in truth I've been through a lot with them and won't give them up easily no matter how much Adam tries to talk me into legit glacier glasses! --E

      Haha we have an ongoing riff about whether brave people -- in any field -- are really just crazy 😂 They need to do some studies on that! But we promise to stay safe -- these views are too great to miss out on through injury! ❤️

    After over 4000m it starts to be a real challenge to catch breath while moving.. heck, to me that level starts already at 3200m and onwards! Kinda funny that at 2000m all is almost like at sea level.. 2700m can cycle almost ok, but hiking after 3000m it all changes rapidly.. So seeing You two having fun and laughing without huffing and puffing (of course You took shots after a little rest) tells that climatization has been a success. 😊
    That icy ridge.. well.. sure footed is a minimum requirement and secondary comes brain with a hole on fear centre.. 😁Once I did a short walk with my son on a icy path (At Stupaital in Austria) over snowy mountain ridge and was sooo scared if he missed a step and would take a slide for few hundred meters on snow... it wasn't anything as steep as Yours, but fast ass slide would have been a sure thing! 🙃
    Again thanks for amazing views from our beloved Alps! 😍

      Yes you are so right about that -- over 4000 makes it pretty challenging to do anything. I'm impressed that you can cycle well at 2700 -- that's where I start having a hard time biking or running, especially uphill, and have to slow down to hiking pace. But hopefully next year we'll start living at altitude, and that will make it a lot easier to go after high peaks! --A
