This was a really interesting video. When I went to film school we were taught that all art has meaning and all meaning has some level of politics. I personal always subscribed to the theory of there being meaning in meaninglessness. Something having no meaning and only being fun provides us with a sense of escapism from the over politicized hell we live in and therefore providing commentary on our obsession with politics. Or maybe I need to stop re-reading so many film theory books and applying their stuff to video games
There are definitely many ways to look at this topic. It’s part of the “fun” of the discussion I guess. As long as people take something out of this, then that makes me happy
@@BearBitesShow I loved this video. It got my brain running at a million miles a minute there. You always do an awesome job at keeping it smart and entertaining.
great video!
Wow this was very political
Once again, a well edited video and interesting topic!
Damn these political games have hands
I think another important distinction to make is whether something is political or *partisan,* ie openly supporting a particular political entity or stance. Because a work can be political without being partisan. The Mushroom Kingdom is inherently political, as you note, but it is non-partisan. Or most of Ubisoft's games are DEEPLY political (despite their protests) but rarely very partisan.
Like Far Cry games typically involve civil wars and uprisings in slightly fictionalized real-world locations, which is about as political as it gets. But since they're nihilistically cynical, their only message is usually just "wow people suck." So they're non-partisan.
OTOH, speaking of early political games, there are the 1980s Rambo adaptations. Not only were they inherently supportive of America's involvement in Vietnam, but they're directly based on false propaganda about American POWs being held in Vietnam long after the war ended. Partisan right-wing politics are absolutely baked into those games.
Although really, any game involving a real-world war is inherently political, and they rarely avoid taking sides. And that's not always a bad thing. I mean, Wolfenstein is both political and partisan, but very few people complain about a game being anti-nazi.
Nintendo's use of the damsel in distress trope could be considered political. It's not just the message you're actively giving, it's also the passive choices.
If we were to look at this question with the other frameworks or definitions I briefly mentioned, then absolutely. However, with the definition being looked at, I don’t think it would be considered that there is no impact. But that is a totally valid observation 🐻❤️
