  • Paul began his international career in paper folding at the age of six, discovering he could create boats and animals out of toilet paper. Since then he has written over forty books and exhibited at major museums, proving to everyone (including his arts professor) that origami deserves to be a highly respected art form.
Paul Jackson was the first person outside Japan to make a career from origami. His ambition was initially met with scorn, but his persistence and three lucky strikes in quick succession meant that he quickly turned his failure into sustained success, in the fields of Design Education, writing and commercial commissions. In his thirty-five-year career, he has seen origami grow from a pastime to one of the most dynamic growth areas of manufacturing, engineering and science. He will tell the story of how his unlikely career unfolded. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I was lucky enough to have Paul as a tutor at Ravensbourne College back in pre history. He's one of the best influences I've had. Despite my career in visual effects, due to Paul I always keep an eye on what is real. And paper is my love.

Olha só que incrivel como tudo começou, a luz do vitral e um pedaço de papel higiênico!!!
Paul , o que o Sr. falou é o certo, vc é o seu estúdio ambulante, só precisa de um papel e tudo se transforma!!!
Origami é filosofal, traz disciplina, treina a coordenação motora fina e abre todas as possibilidades criativas. A supresa do resultado final!!
    Adorei a Palestra, muito obrigada!!

Interesting, gives me some food for thought as someone who tried for a decade to make a living in designing paper products. Not origami though, rather pulped products. Paper was my passion for about 10 years though. P.S. I just purchased one of your design books. Thanks for your work!

I’d love to know which person at art school told him it wasn’t art. We went to the same art school at the same time and I had issues with them too.

I'm so distracted by the excessive FOLDS in his knickers. Wonder if he knows or if Oragami artists are uncomfortable around irons?
