  • Welcome to our in-depth exploration of RoboDebt, a significant and controversial chapter in Australia's welfare history. In this video, we unravel the complexities of RoboDebt, a government initiative intended to recover overpaid social security benefits, and examine its far-reaching impact on the lives of many Australians.
RoboDebt was introduced in 2016 by the Australian Government with the goal of identifying and reclaiming overpayments made to welfare recipients. The system employed an automated data-matching process that compared individuals' income reported to Centrelink with their reported earnings from the Australian Taxation Office. Any discrepancies led to debt notices being issued.
At first glance, RoboDebt seemed like an efficient way to safeguard public funds. However, the reality was far more problematic. The automated system often generated incorrect debt notices due to flawed data matching, causing undue stress and financial hardship for countless individuals, including some of the nation's most vulnerable populations.
In our video, we delve into the human stories behind the statistics. We share personal accounts from those who received erroneous debt notices and explore the emotional and financial toll it took on them. These narratives highlight the real-world consequences of relying too heavily on automated systems without adequate human oversight.
We also cover the legal battles that ensued, culminating in a landmark class-action lawsuit against the government. In 2020, the Federal Court ruled that the RoboDebt scheme was unlawful, leading to a settlement of $1.2 billion in refunds and compensation to affected individuals.
Finally, we examine the broader implications of the RoboDebt saga. What lessons can be learned about the use of automation in government services? How can we ensure that technology serves to enhance, rather than undermine, social justice?
Join us as we dissect RoboDebt, shedding light on this critical issue and its implications for the future of welfare systems worldwide. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more insightful content.

4:24 "Prior to 2016 the onus of proof was still on the government." Not true. The "robo" in robodebt referred to the automated process of issuing debt notices without oversight; it was not because an automatic presumption of guilt was a new addition to the way debts were pursued.

Did you give a frank and fearless response? Or did you take the "I'm just following orders" option?
Edit: sorry, that was harsh. I also worked at Services Australia at the time. I knew I was seeing incorrect debts and referred customers to the "correct" (as we'd been instructed) team to have them reviewed. It wasn't until the Royal Commission that I found out the "correct" team were being prevented from reviewing the debts properly. Any 'frank and fearless' heroes asking awkward questions were moved elsewhere. It made every single one of us look dodgy and I'm going to be furious about it for a long time.

IMHO this has been misreported by the media. the NACC is an investigatory body, not a judicial one. Their job is to find evidence and, if sufficient, provide it to the DPP to prosecute a case. This has effectively already been done by the Royal Commission, now the ball is in the court of the APSC (who are taking action on 5/6 of the named persons) and potentially the DPP for further prosecution of the matter. However I agree that it does merit close scrutiny from the public and we should be deeply concerned if these matters simply get swept aside

There has been a culture in western societies, I believe implemented through the WEF of non-accountability. It demoralises citizens and makes them feel powerless, thus handing more power over to governments and corporations. If you condition citizens to expect governments to be incompetent and corporations not to be prosecuted for tax evasion, then thats what will become the status quo. The Labour Government announced yesterday that it is going to start having in-house auditors and consultants, which will take the power/abuse away from big firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers that have been fk#ng the Australian tax payer to the tune of Billions. I won't believe it till I see it. But at least their obituary has been written, now bury the ba$t @ r D's.

There seems to be a culture of convict/working class/ 'we are not worthy' attitude when it comes to receiving unemployment benefits. It's almost taboo to talk about or say your receiving Centrelink, so people seem reluctant to stand up for the unemployed and intermittent workers. So it's not just a media thing, it's a cultural attitude of 'your not entitled to anything', your a burden. And the media play it because they are connected to mining/big business. The Government gave recently in just 1 of many deals $100 Billion of FREE gas to an energy company as part of a deal? So they were trying to claw back 4.5 billion with Robodebt but giving away 100 Billion🤯 They need to keep the public thinking the unemployed are scammers on the tax payer so we don't notice them stealing hundreds of billions of our common wealth.

      Are you insane??!
Do you realise that the vast majority of the people who got hit with the Robo-Debt notices *_never_* owed **_anything_** , or at most a _fraction_ of what they were told they did? My brother was hit with something like an $18,000+ debt -- the anguish that that false debt brought our family can *NEVER* be erased - I'm only grateful that he never became one of those poor individuals -- we still live with the fact that my brother *was* near-suicidal, & my mother made herself sick with worry over repayment of money that we simply didn't have.
While it was _eventually_ cleared up; the weeks & months of pain & tears that my family suffered- that **thousands** of families suffered, was never truly apologised for. We are not 'beggars'- my brother was working two jobs to make ends meet at the time- & he now works with veterans - my mother has a degenerative condition, & she *still* spent uncounted hours & weeks looking for every payslip & double-checking everything she could, despite how much it hurt her hips (she's also had a double hip replacement) & spine.
However much I despise an uncaring fool like you- I would not wish that time of misery on anyone...

They did everything in their power to pursue those who are responsible for the matter.
The role of Government is not judicial, the Royal Commission into the matter was all they could really do.
The Royal Commission has turned all relevant evidence and testimony over to the appropriate law enforcement and judicial bodies to pursue legal action.
It's out of the Labor Government's hands what happens to the accused. Legilative and judicial branches of Government do, nor should they ever, have power in either of thier counterparts jurisdiction.
If they did, we would be more of an Authoritarian State or Dictatorship.

I call that the golden parachute. I saw it in the army with the contracts. The officer would leave the army after approving the contract only to provide there expertise to the winning bid. Had a red tabber tell my company that the winning bid was the best one out of the 3 trialled. Lol one of the diggers happen to partake in the trails. The digger demolished the officer in front of the whole company. The officer said nothing and walked away as he knew he was caught out in his lie. Were heard that officer left the army is was on the board for the winning bid. We still didn't use the equipment as it was rubbish and most of the guys bought the other two companies equipment instead

So technically and legally, NONE of the notices and NONE of the debts were correct.

At the end of the day the question still is. "Who will be held to account for Robo-debt"? If you cannot hold government to account for this deadly, illegal and politically agenda driven government policy, then you cannot hold any government to account. I thought politicians stood up for the Westminster System in which politicians are held to account and they do not mislead the public or parliament.
Robo-debt proves the lie to that. I guess we no longer have the Westminster System but a new Australian version where politicians can simply walk away when ever they want, irrespective of any government failures they have caused.

This was truly a low point of Australian democracy and suggests that ministers should pass an IQ and social intelligence test before taking the appointment. The whole idea that a machine could run a government program and make the decisions that affect people's lives without human oversight, was something only a sociopath could seriously consider much less mandate. I thought Australia was better than that. Hopefully we learnt the lesson.

You want another story? Income averaging still occurs. It is used for single parents who are meant to receive child support payments. If they get irregular payments or even if they don't get payments at all, they will still be hit with a debt based on what they *should* have received. Worse, the more care they have for their children, the larger their debt will be - for example, if they have 70% care and the other parent is meant to pay $50 a week for child support then their debt will be approximately 40% of $2600 (the annual amount that they *should* receive). If their care increases to 100% and the other parent is meant to pay $100 a week then their debt will be 40% of $5200. Even if they don't receive a cent of child support. This also happens if the other parent underestimates their income or doesn't do their tax returns.
The majority of Centrelink debts are dealt to women, through no fault of their own.

I told Robodebt you have give time to solve issue as i own them $2000 but this period was 2 years old when raised, it took 3 years later with right person who could add up to close the case.
I had work all year with 4 different farming business with different income amounts, of these two non running businesses with no payslip nor account details.
These farms were in different states, leaving my family behind to work nearly full year.

Obviously the suicides are awful, but why am I supposed to feel sorry for seasonal workers earning 50-60k and claiming the dole on top for half the year? Keating was way harsher back in the day. He penalized anyone earning over $8 an hour and took up to 90% of all part-time income. My boss at the ANZ was shocked when I said don't roster me for more than 10 hours a week, because everything above that goes to the ATO and the DSS. Between 10 and 25 hours per week you were lucky to make $1 per hour after tax as social security and the LITO phased out at the same time the income tax phased in. Meanwhile you were expected to give up half your Austudy grant money in exchange for a debt of double the amount you received.
