Hey man, the first part of the '67 referendum was actually to remove the exemption that had until then prevented the federal government from making 'race laws' for Aboriginal people. Up till then only the states could make such laws, afterwards the federal government could too. I believe the reasoning was to be able to overrule the states who had been mistreating (to put it mildly) their Aboriginal populations. Sorta like an early form of affirmative action if you will
Harold Holt recognised that there was a serious lack of swimming pools in Victoria, so he took the only reasonable step to fix this. He drowned himself deliberately so people build a pool in his honour. God bless his soul.
6:21 The true fate of Harold Holt is he faked his own death and then assumed Harold Wilson's position of UK Prime Minister and historians never noticed.
The real reason why Holt went missing: It all started 12000 years ago when the land bridge between Victoria and Tasmania began flooding, the native aboriginals that thrived in this area all though at first struggled, they eventually began adapting to the aquatic life style and evolving to breath underwater, they lived undisturbed for thousands of years until Holt trespassed and they captured him as prisoner, not understanding that he needed oxygen to breath he died, the end. Great video as always Mr Mitchel. Can't wait for the next
Harold Holt wanted to reunite with his fellow fish brothers and be crowned the prince of Portsea. He had to disguise his disappearance as his death to keep it a secret from the Australian public. This was the only way to keep his original homeland a secret from the humans and protect it from extinction.
Holt won one of the Largest landslide up to that point in federation in 1966. The White Australian policy was comprehensively dismantled under the Liberals. The Immigration Restriction Act and dictation test ended in 1958 was abolished by Menzies, the dictation test was considered the back bone of the White Australia Policy. Other parts of the White Australia policy. on 9th March 1966, Hubert Opperman, the Minister for Immigration in the Coalition government led by Prime Minister Harold Holt, announced the outcome of a departmental review of immigration policy. Holt had other importsnt pension and welfare reforms.
Just google the Immigration Restriction Act 1901. That is the legislative basis of the White Australia Policy. Labors PM Fisher strengthened it in the 1940s. It was NOT as said in this video, Menzies White Australia Policy.
McMahon would have been PM after Holt drowned but McEwen refused to serve in coalition with him as he despised him. HE resigned as leader of the country party in 1971 which allowed McMahon to challenge Gorton
1:49 Menzies White Australia Policy? The Immigration Restriction Act 1901 restricted immigration based on race and was strengthened under Labors John Curtin in the 40’s. Menzies and Holt dismantled Labors Race based immigration policy.
What sources did you use? Curious since the tale of Menzies successors is interesting. Also please do a video about Evatt and explain why he is labour left and what that stands for.
I mainly used essays from a book called "Australian Prime Minister" plus my own knowledge from reading about US/Vietnam history Ian Hancock for Harold Holt Gerard Henderson for John Gorton Peter Sekuless for William McMahon
@@Mr_M_History It is a good and useful book for this subject. You do seem quite knowledge on those periods ahaha. Thank you for giving the authors and titles. Keep up the good work.
We all know the Harold Holt isn't dead and is going to appear as a guest star on your podcast. And obviously the best video currently on the internet about the Whitlam goverment is "75 Years of the Liberal Party" where they sum it up the entire government in 3 sentences.
Holt's untimely demise has actually become part of Australian vernacular. To do a Harold Holt = Bolt (typically performed at a restaurant just prior to the bill being produced)
One minor error. With the confidence vote, you correctly identified 33 votes each. Groton was one of those voting in favor of himself. But a tied vote reverts to the leaders decision and he declared that if he had not won a majority then he had not have confidence of the party room and stepped down from the leadership. So he didn’t really vote against himself, just was not stubborn enough to declare a tied vote in his own favor.
Not mentioned the Gorton Government supported nuclear power nearly built a nuclear power station near Jarvis Bay. He expanded the Space and technology industries in Australia funding science further. Over 3 annual budgets, the Gorton government provided free health care for 250,000 poorer families, increased the allowances for the aged, invalids, widows, war pensioners and incapacitated ex-servicemen
I worked at channel 9 for 33 years, some of which was during the period that the Packers paid for the production and gave programming time for Bob Santamaria’s weird little weekly tv show called “Point of View”.
While I think McMahon is treated unfairly by history kudos to you Mr Mitchell to pointing Whitlam only got over the line. It was McMahon that withdrew the troops from Vietnam and Whitlam only pulled out a training team that was left. McMahon also created the first inception of Department of Environment and The McMahon ministry was the first to have a Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. He also provided $500k to Bangladesh refugees in 1971.
Yeah it surprised me a bit when he said the referendum was to remove the 'race laws' rather than remove the exemption of Aboriginal people from the 'race laws'
Harold Holt got hit by the fourth bullet that was shot at JFK ...it kept velocity because of its magic properties and travelled through the sea and hit him, this was the actual magic bullet
What did you think about the suggestion the Aboriginal referendum was done so Qld and WA could keep their Senate numbers? I thought s16 of the Constitution granted each state an equal number of Senators regardless of population?
Harold Holt was really a divine being from another galaxy who decided he wanted out. So he faked his death and disappeared to his underwater fortress where he boarded his spacecraft and left to go back to the Andromeda galaxy!
00:12 interesting how ABC newsreaders would speak with "received pronunciation", and attempt to outdo the BBC... Was that policy of the ABC at the time, or did it represent the way a certain class would speak in Australia?
You shouldn't downplay Labor and Gough Whitlams 1972 victory, yes it wasn't exactly a landslide win but considering that they were up against the liberal/country party coalition plus other parties giving them first preference Including the DLP while the Greens didn't exist and the communist party barely existed it was quite an achievement given the odds stacked against them
2::19 Whitlam opened the door to Asian immigration. Whitlam was vehemently opposed to the Boat People Crisis where thousands of South Vietnamese fled after the fall of Saigon due to his belief that anti communists wouldn’t vote for Labor here. He had the same position on, “those damned Balts” as he referred to refugees from the Baltic States who also fled from Communism. Come on man, this Labor loves refugees - Liberals are mean racists line is not an accurate recounting of the history.
Menzies really should be pronounced Mingis, Menzies being the anglicised spelling of the name Mèinnearach in Scottish Gaelic (Galik) In Scotland we'd never pronounce Menzies as the Australian prime minster pronounced his name, it would be, Oi Mingis get tae the bar ya tight c***!!! . Aye well, he must have forgot his origins 🤪 Alba gu bràth!

Harold Holt was looking for a career change so swam out to Antarctica to become the Emperor of the Penguins
I thought I recognised one of the penguins from Surf's Up!
Great video. Holt has always been a fascinating PM not just because he disappeared but because he was socially progressive and did some good things
