Troubleshooting all the various reasons an electric pressure cooker may not seal properly and how to fix the issue so you can get back to pressure cooking with success.
20 minutes of trying to get the lid to seal and multiple videos later, I came across your video. Your tip solved my issue in 1 minute! Thank you so much!
I feel your pain, Tabitha. My pot just burned some macaroni to the bottom after not sealing. What a nightmare to get all that scrubbed off so I could begin again.
I just had this in my 2020 Duo Crisp (new pressure button that sets to seal automatically), and none of the issues you cover were the problem. In the end I put the lid back on, made sure it was set to seal, and put it on saute. This brought the pot to pressure and popped up the float valve. The instant pot then sounds an alarm and the screen reads 'PrSE' - this is to alert you to the fact that pressure has built up on a non-pressure programme. All I did then was to press 'Pressure' and set the time for 25 mins and voila, all working.

very helpful and informative video. I got (as a gift) a used Kalorik brand instant pot and I've found it very useful. Not as many features as the brand NAME IP but in principle, they all work basically the same way. But I can't find a replacement SEAL for the lid. I've noticed Amazon sells "generic IP seals" (apparently will fit a number of different models) but was curious if you know whether a seal ("generic" type) will fit just about ANY brand IP as long as it's the same basic size (ex. mine is 6 qt which is a common size). Another question -- do have any idea what the LIFETIME use for these pots is? I have several Kuhn-Rikon Durotherm pressure cookers that are used on stove tops, and these will last HUNDREDS of years. Just curious if you have any feedback on what the average life expectancy of these pots might be. thanks for any info.

Hey, I need your help. I have the same instant pot you do. We have been using our instant pot for just over a year and it’s been working fine. All of a sudden it’s acting up. We put chicken in there with enough water as usual. Plug it in, put the knob to seal, click poultry and set it to 35 min as we have done successfully before. It goes to on. About 20 minutes later the valve goes up to show it’s pressurized but the pot won’t start the time and out of the seal valve steam is coming out as if it is partially venting but it’s in the seal position and the time does not go on. I’ve watched a few videos and replaced the ring as one of the suggestions. Also cleaned the pot and lid thoroughly as well. Thought I was in the clear but same thing is happening. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Would hate to throw the pot out. Thanks
Hi Serge! I am so sorry you are having issues. I would have said it sounds like a seal is broken, but since you tried that, it is clearly not it. I would try using just manual/pressure cook function instead of using the poultry function. If the issue is still occurring, give IP customer service a call--they may have an idea. BUT it may have bit the dust :( Here is customer service info: instantpot.com/contact-us/

1st time used. Did the test and steam did come out of vent. Later I tried to cook some pork belly and the lid seems very loose. Seal looks ok. I had to press down on lid for a bit then it sealed as it heated up. But, even though it started its countdown, the steamer valve would never vent any steam. Its clicking on & off as I can see the ceiling lights dim a fraction. There's some pressure there and takes quit a bit to release it all, but 1/2 hr there is no venting. Seems like its not quite heating up fully. Set on High and is 1/2 full of water. Guess its back to my 50yr old stainless steel stove top pressure cooker...
Hi there! It actually sounds like there is not an issue with the vent knob. There should not be steam that comes out of the vent during the cooking time (and only occasionally does it come out during time it is building up pressure). The clicking on and off though sounds like a power surge.
I made a thick Chile sauce which included 2 cans of condensed tomato soup and one cup of water so there should have been plenty of liquid but I could not get my 6 qt. IP to seal, steam kept coming out of the little valve (not the venting valve or pressure release valve that you turn to release the pressure but the one in the hole beside it. I took the top off 3 times, cleaned it and made sure the valves in the lid were free (cleaned them too and check the little silicone ring on the sealing valve) and I removed the pressure release knob which you should be able to blow thru once the knob is off to see if it is clear. So I left the sauce, meat, etc. boil for 25 minutes until it was done right in the instant pot with the lid on. After I bagged my sauce for freezing, I did the steam test which is 2 minutes on manual and two or three cups of water, push the steam button and it sealed perfectly and worked just fine. So I surmise the sauce was a bit thick for it but I don't like watery Chili sauce. Do you have suggestions or what is your opinion? .......... Also I found once I take the lid off perhaps to check if something is done, I have to run the lid under cold water just for a few minutes or I can't get the lid back on because the seal ring will not stay in place..... I've had my IP for eight months now, but it never ceases to surprise me. ....... BTW I subscribed to your channel today 6/15/2018…... That was also a good video on the cooking frozen ground meat. I basically knew that from watching Nili's channel, but her channel is starting to turn into a family show going shopping for groceries, etc. While her kids are cute, she just had another baby to make 5 kids, I'm more interesting in feeding myself and doing it as easy as possible. I am almost 65, live fairly comfortably on SSDI, alone (18 years now) with my Cat Shyann 3 years old, so I’m always making food and freezing it, example my Chili sauce, LOL.... My IP has become a great source for re-heating foods after thawing them out because it cooks with steam and heats your food hot without drying it out + I don't have to stand there and watch it. When I first got my IP I watched a lot of videos, and that is how I learned to use mine, and probably the reason I purchased mine as I'm always watching videos and the menu to the right of the video, which is always catching my eye, that is how I found your channel as well. I started out watching trucking videos as they are my favorite. However, I digress, I wanted to see if your tip for cooking ground beef frozen in the instant pot was close to Nili’s, which it was (you must have been live when that video was made). Nili needed 30 minutes for two packs of grass fed ground beef because at 25 minutes it was not done. For me, at 25 minutes, and a bit raw but thawed, I’d of simply used the sauté function and browned it a little bit, best of both worlds in my opinion. Soon I’m going to steam corn on the cob for 2 minutes, cut it off the cob, then freeze it flat so I can break off a portion for reheating using a freezer bag. Six ears of farm fresh corn for $2.00 had to buy it, LoL. …..BTW, the second 1lbs of ground meat I purchased was packed in that Styrofoam tray, I simply wrapped it up in freezer paper never giving it a thought about that paper stuff on the bottom. But I think if I run it under hot water a bit, that paper stuff will peel off, and I’ll remember not to do that again LOL, so good tip there. I wish you good luck and I hope to see your channel grow in the future. (I’m Pete).
Hi Pete! Thanks for subscribing! I am just starting in the RUclips world, so hopefully my channel will grow. I am so glad you found my video for frozen ground beef helpful. I have actually never heard of NIli's channel, but will have to check it out. As far as your chile sauce goes--that's a tough one. Anything with that much thick tomato product is going to be extremely difficult to cook in your pressure cooker. I don't use condensed soups, so it is hard for me to tell you exactly what to do, but my guess is to pour in 1 1/2 cups water in your IP then put your canned soup on top and DO NOT mix. After cooking, mix and then if you need it thicken up, do so by removing your lid and turning to saute function to let boil for a few minutes to thicken sauce. Hope that helps! Kristen :)
Thanks Kristen, I will try that way next time putting the water on the bottom, I never gave that a mere thought. The Condensed Tomato soup is the secret ingredient in what was my mom's (who's long past away) ingredient and my sister and I find it delicious to make Chili Con Carnie. The recipe is easy, saute one onion and bell pepper, and brown ground beef. Add a 3 table spoons of worcestershire sauce, One table spoon garlic, 1/8 teaspoon old bay seasoning. Then add 2 cans Campbell's Condensed soup, one can kidney beans & one can of water and if it's a bit thick my sister adds V-8 juice to thin it down but I like it thick. Then I make 3/4 cups of wheat elbow noodles on the stove, and poor 1-1/2 cups of sauce over the noodles and I think you and your husband will fall in love with the taste of this meal. You can make noodles sauce and all in the Instant pot, but since I make a lot of sauce and freeze it, the latter works out well for me. I thaw out the 1.5 cups of sauce that I had in a freezer bag, then warm it up in my instant pot (1 cup water, trivet, set bowl in trivet and put sauce in bowl and manual about 10 minutes) Then make the noodles in a separate sauce pan, combine the two, and yum. ....... Again thanks for your thoughts and reply!! ..... Pete
Hi, thank you for all the tips. My issue is with a brand new IP water test. Vent in seal position, little knob pops up , all seem sealed. The pot is brand new. After reaching the high pressure, Burn warning appears, if I wait burn beeps again then it goes into On and I can hear a clicking sound but not switching off... Any help appreciated
The seal ring on mine has always been super loose. I've always had to push it back up into place before putting the lid on. The one in your video looked like it was tight around the ring on the inside of the lid. So, even cold, mine is really loose. I could probably turn the lid over, shake a few times, and it would fall out even under cool conditions. I guess I should just buy new rings and hope it fits better? I'm tired of fussing with it.
Have you ever had the Steam Release Valve constantly hissing? I keep loosing all the moisture out through it. I'm not sure what to do as Instant Pot just want to sell me a new unit. I've only had it a couple of years. Any suggestions?
Hey there! It sounds like your seal went bad. I have to replace mine every couple years. I would recommend doing that and replacing the vent knob seal as well. You can find my favorite IP Products (inexpensive) at Amazon (affiliate but no cost to you!) amzn.to/3xswPiP
My Instant Pot won't work and it seems to be stuck in cancel mode which counts down but nothing more, I tried using Saute Mode and Lid error shows up, Manual Mode Lid error shows up. Nothing happens in other modes! I don't always use the Lid on these two modes so I don't understand why it would show up if the Lid is not even being used? When I tried putting Lid on the pot I didn't get the bing sound of it locking into place. Is their a reset button? Thank you for such a great video!
Hi Lynn! It sounds like your model is having issues. I would unplug and be sure your entire pot is clean and nothing inside unit. Try again and if nothing works, contact the Instant Pot Support 1-800-828-7280. They may be able to help, or issue you a new model if yours is still under warranty. Sorry!
I am having a problem with my instant pot. I've had it for about two years and it's been great but lately I noticed that it isn't cooking as well. For instance I used to be able to hard boil eggs at six minutes high and six minutes natural release. And they were just perfect. Then I tried them again at six minutes and they were not hard boiled. Next batch I increased to seven minutes and they were just barely hard boiled. It's disappointing when you want hard-boiled eggs when you do a batch, you take them out and they're not hard cooked. You can't put them back in at that stage. Do you have any suggestions as to why my eggs aren't cooking as well as they used to be? Do I need a new seal?
Hi there! That is frustrating for sure. I first would be sure your Instant Pot is set to high pressure, not low and use cold water, not warm water. If that is not the case, I would get a new seal. And if those are not the issues, the heating element may be going bad--but hopefully one of the first reasons is the issue. Best of luck!
You know that metal ring that holds the gasket in place and that ring is attached to the lid with little legs with little feet, well the foot part on one of the legs is detached so I don't know how to fix that issue aside from going to a welder.
Hi Elizabeth. I think I understand your issue. If it is the floating valve, there is a rubber gasket that holds it in place that can be replaced. If it is the shield valve that can also be replace. Here are the parts (affliate links) Shield and float valve gaskets: amzn.to/3kjlc21 I hope that helps!
Why is my Steam Release Valve keeps releasing steam after it reaches pressure. Is it normal? Maybe I will have to check again how to 'seal' the quick release button? I am using the Instant Pot Duo Nova.
Hi Kelly. If it is releasing JUST a tiny bit and then stopping, not a big deal. If more than that, be sure to check your seal to see if it is on the lid correctly or has any tears (if it does, replace the seal) And the vent knob should be pointed all the way to "sealing"
Where can I get a better ring for my lid? I notice yours is red in the video. It also seems to snap in tighter than mine. Is there an aftermarket brand of replacement parts? My ring is clear and it is stretched. I struggle with it every time I use it. We have only used our instant pot fifteen or twenty times in the last year. I fully intend on using it daily as I'm changing my diet. I want to cook lots of bean soup, vegetable chili, lots of meals that I can cook on one day a week and prep meals with. We love it.
Mine seals but there is steam escaping on the top of pot under the lid sealing mechanism. Right by the pin that makes noise to let you know it’s shut. Nothing appears wrong and I changed seal ring, any advice?
What can I do if I forgot to put the seal on ? After 3 minutes it never beeped . Maybe after 15 minutes of pressure cooking corn on the cob - it’s piping hot . The pin never rose . I did unplug it but how long do you think I have to wait to safely open it ??? 😩
Pressure was never reached, so while things will be hot, you won't have to worry about hot liquid spewing on you. Give it a couple minutes and open, standing away to protect yourself from the steam.
My 3 qt Duo keeps giving me the Lid error message. I've tried everything, and since I've only had it a few months, no spare ring. It should last more than a half dozen uses, shouldn't it?
It should, but things happen. I would take the ring out, carefully inspect for tears and if it is fine, wash it and put it back in place and try it again.
I took the seal out to clean it, and put it back exactly the way it came out, now all this steam gets out every time for like 3-5 minutes before it seals. I don't understand how it eventually makes a seal if it doesn't right away.
So I am having a really odd problem with my instant pot. It comes to pressure just fine then like 30 seconds after the timer starts the pressure release valve starts billowing steam out of it. I have cleaned the pot multiple times and checked everything but it happens every single time. I am starting to think I got a faulty instant pot.
@Jonathan Kayne the 8 quart can be a bit finicky. Be sure to use a full 1.5 cups of liquid and take your seal off, put it on again, be sure your vent knob is sealed and try again. It is normal for some steam to come out right after the cooking time starts at time with that model, but should not last more than a couple seconds.
@@AMindFullMom I've actually tried that but it basically continues to vent until I manage to get the knob in just the right position (which is incredibly difficult because of the steam)
I am having problems with the floating valve that does not close completely. I realize because after a certain time the house starts to smell like stew and then I have to take a knife and pull the valve so that it closes well. What could be happening? My Instant Pot is new.
Hmm, I wonder if something was put together wrong. I would take off the floating valve wash really well and put back together. You can see the part I am talking about here: amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-101/ I have pictures with the parts labeled. I hope that helps!
I understand! It doesn't really lock into place, but it will stay in the sealed position. Start by doing a water test so you can get comfortable: amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-water-test/
Our pot is around 3 months old. We tried to cook at high pressure and I see leaking vapours, not much, coming through on the side of the lid . Is this normal ?
Hi Jasper! I am sorry you are having issues so soon! My best guess is that it is the sealing ring. Be sure it is snug on the lid and even try to replace it if that does not work (you can order the rings on amazon).Hope that works!
Look at your seal, it may not be secured well or maybe you even removed it. Sometimes if it is not secure, your Instant Pot will flash lid indicating the lid is not fully secure.
I've been using this for years. It's a 50/50 that it ever seals LOL Nothing is dirty. Nothing is blocked. It either goes or it doesn't LOL! I wouldn't recommend you tell people to reset the chicken for the original time after 45 mins of soft boiling....
@@WIMPY86 That is an unusual problem for sure! I would just be sure you are using enough thin liquid and your vent knob is sealed (which you are probably already doing)
You do certainly have to be prepared to wait for pressure to build and to release--but there are some things it makes so much faster than traditional methods (baked potatoes, dried beans, roasts--not things like stir fry, etc)
Hi Matt! Was it on before you walked away?? It may have been your plug was not securely inserted into Instant Pot. If that was not the case, you need to contact Instant Pot themselves, as that is an issue they will need to address (and they are great doing so!)
Hey! Can you tell me if you used milk or cheese while pressure cooking? That would cause a burn notice. If not, how much liquid did you use? Was your vent knob sealed. Happy to further troubleshoot for you.
Hello, Mine won’t cook longer then 5 minutes without the Safety Warning Check Lid comes on. I called customer service to see if they can help me trouble shoot it but they said it should work. I keep trying to troubleshoot it myself starting it over. I’ve done it like 10 times and it keeps doing the same thing so I don’t know what to do. Is there anything you can Suggest. Also it’s sealed and not leaking. It cooks fine for 5 minutes then the lid code comes on and beeps. Thanks!
Hi there! I am sorry customer service has not been more helpful for you. If you have an 8 quart, try using at least 1.5 cups water. If that does not work, I would try 2 cups. For a 6 quart I would use at least 1 cup. If that still does not work, I would return for a new pot if able. Keep me posted.
My IP is clean, has enough liquid, has a new ring, and the ring is cool before using and my IP lid leaks a large amount of steam from the front of the lid. I have called corporate and their only suggestion was to send me new sealing rings and it still leaks. This does not happen every single time but it’s annoying.
That is REALLY annoying and does seem to be an issue with the lid/sealing rings. I would look at your lid to see if the metal ring that holds the ring in has been bent in some way.
Did the tips in the video not help? I need more information to troubleshoot. Be sure to add at least 1 cup of thin liquid with the chicken and your seal is on the lid.
Never even got to use mine even one single time. Lid would never come off even with lid unlocked. Out of warranty and have a permanently stuck shut- I hate having to throw this in the garbage having never ever been used. Searched many videos and none have a solution:(
@@chris18228 That is not normal. It is normal for a bit to come out for a time while coming to pressure, not while under pressure. I would try the water test again to see if it happens again.

Hey there! What model do you have? It honestly sounds like it may be defective and you need to call customer service. They are great!
@@AMindFullMom hi, it is a Duo 5.7 L
Thank you! You saved me. I did not know to always use at least 1 cup of water!
You are very welcome!
I would totally recommend buying new rings. They can stretch over time!
Thank you mindful mom great job !
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much! You are so much more helpful than the manual.
Happy to help!
Here are the parts (affliate links)
Shield and float valve gaskets: amzn.to/3kjlc21
I hope that helps!
Thanks for the tips!
Thank you!! After 20 min feeling very stupid i managed with your video
You aren't stupid! It can be trickly! So glad this video helped.
This helped thanks
Where can I get a better ring for my lid? I notice yours is red in the video. It also seems to snap in tighter than mine. Is there an aftermarket brand of replacement parts? My ring is clear and it is stretched. I struggle with it every time I use it. We have only used our instant pot fifteen or twenty times in the last year. I fully intend on using it daily as I'm changing my diet. I want to cook lots of bean soup, vegetable chili, lots of meals that I can cook on one day a week and prep meals with. We love it.
Hi John. YES, I ordered this brand off Amazon and it is amazing--much tighter fit. Here is the link (it is an affliliate link) amzn.to/33dQXnk
@@AMindFullMom thank you!
Mine seals but there is steam escaping on the top of pot under the lid sealing mechanism. Right by the pin that makes noise to let you know it’s shut. Nothing appears wrong and I changed seal ring, any advice?
Hi Lyn! Does it reach pressure and stop releasing steam? A bit of steam being released as pressure is being reached can be normal.
@@AMindFullMom Thanks !
Thank you I was crazy trying to figure this out lol
Happy to help
My 3 qt Duo keeps giving me the Lid error message. I've tried everything, and since I've only had it a few months, no spare ring. It should last more than a half dozen uses, shouldn't it?
It should, but things happen. I would take the ring out, carefully inspect for tears and if it is fine, wash it and put it back in place and try it again.
@@AMindFullMom Thanks. I will do it again, but meantime, I ordered extras.
@@Nemo-yn1sp I hope it is an easy fix
The FIRST question to ask yourself is ( hmm, is the pressurized button mode set in the proper position ?? )
I took the seal out to clean it, and put it back exactly the way it came out, now all this steam gets out every time for like 3-5 minutes before it seals. I don't understand how it eventually makes a seal if it doesn't right away.
A bit of steam coming out is normal
So I am having a really odd problem with my instant pot. It comes to pressure just fine then like 30 seconds after the timer starts the pressure release valve starts billowing steam out of it. I have cleaned the pot multiple times and checked everything but it happens every single time. I am starting to think I got a faulty instant pot.
Can you tell me what model you have and what you were trying to cook? I may be able to help you!
@@AMindFullMom it's the viva, the 8 quart model
@Jonathan Kayne the 8 quart can be a bit finicky. Be sure to use a full 1.5 cups of liquid and take your seal off, put it on again, be sure your vent knob is sealed and try again. It is normal for some steam to come out right after the cooking time starts at time with that model, but should not last more than a couple seconds.
@@AMindFullMom I've actually tried that but it basically continues to vent until I manage to get the knob in just the right position (which is incredibly difficult because of the steam)
@@JonathanKayne You probably have tried this, but be sure to have your knob pointing in the right direction before starting pressure cooking.
Thank you!!! Ceiling ring was not on well 😄
Glad it helped!
@@AMindFullMom I requested a replacement and it works perfectly.
The stinky bit same had it for a week
Thank you so much! Dirty ass seal ring smh..
Awesome video!
THank you!
Thank you! The freezer thing totally worked.
Thanks 😊 the liquid was my problem 💯
Glad this helped :)
The release valve itself just seems way to loose. Scared to try anything with it tbh lol
I understand! It doesn't really lock into place, but it will stay in the sealed position. Start by doing a water test so you can get comfortable: amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-water-test/
@@AMindFullMom thank you!
@@AMindFullMom Thanks for the tip
@@jasperdany I hope it works!
Why my instant pot is showing lid and I get a small cylindrical thing from the lid. Don't where it has to fix? Help me plzz
Look at your seal, it may not be secured well or maybe you even removed it. Sometimes if it is not secure, your Instant Pot will flash lid indicating the lid is not fully secure.
Thank you for this video 🙂
You are SO welcome Kristi! I hope it helped you solve any issue you may have been having (or prevent issues!)
I've been using this for years. It's a 50/50 that it ever seals LOL
Nothing is dirty. Nothing is blocked. It either goes or it doesn't LOL!
I wouldn't recommend you tell people to reset the chicken for the original time after 45 mins of soft boiling....
Can I ask what model you are using? That may help me troubleshoot for you.
@@AMindFullMom The IP-LUX50-V3
She's temperamental yet out performing the Power XL :)
@@WIMPY86 That is an unusual problem for sure! I would just be sure you are using enough thin liquid and your vent knob is sealed (which you are probably already doing)
@@AMindFullMom I'll alter the liquid methods. See if it helps. Thank you :)
I think "Instant" is a misnomer for this device.
You do certainly have to be prepared to wait for pressure to build and to release--but there are some things it makes so much faster than traditional methods (baked potatoes, dried beans, roasts--not things like stir fry, etc)
Mine is not turning on when I plug it up? I was just making pizza sauce . Set it for sauce I came came back an it was off?
Hi Matt! Was it on before you walked away?? It may have been your plug was not securely inserted into Instant Pot. If that was not the case, you need to contact Instant Pot themselves, as that is an issue they will need to address (and they are great doing so!)
My instant pot hates me. Just burned some macaroni and it wasn’t pleasant scraping that off. Trying again for the third time.
Hey! Can you tell me if you used milk or cheese while pressure cooking? That would cause a burn notice. If not, how much liquid did you use? Was your vent knob sealed. Happy to further troubleshoot for you.
Hello,
Mine won’t cook longer then 5 minutes without the Safety Warning Check Lid comes on.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
😔😒am trying to cook chicken but it won't start😔what should I do
Did the tips in the video not help? I need more information to troubleshoot. Be sure to add at least 1 cup of thin liquid with the chicken and your seal is on the lid.
Never even got to use mine even one single time. Lid would never come off even with lid unlocked. Out of warranty and have a permanently stuck shut- I hate having to throw this in the garbage having never ever been used. Searched many videos and none have a solution:(
That is so odd. Try placing outside for 24 hours in the cold. I wonder if the sealing ring expanded and the cold air may fix that. Worth a try.
thank you sooo much! those were my mistakes.
So happy to help :)
Instant pot is a piece of crap.
Thank
good luck trying to call manufacturing co.
I have had great luck in the past, I surely hope that has not changed. That would be extremely disappointing.
you coulda started with turn your knob to sealed...
My cook time has begun it’s in the close position and still A little bit of steam is coming out
A little bit of steam is OK as long as it does not last long. If it continues, hit cancel and then carefully remove lid to check seal and try again.
@@AMindFullMom A little bit of steam what’s coming out of the pressure release for the whole time it cooked for one hour
