    Hey Kirk, just discovered your videos - love them! And the hawk spinning, jokes, etc even entertains my kids.
    I'm just about to finish off a basement that I've sheetrocked and find your alternative to what I've always done (tape and mud and sand) very appealing. Only problem is that no one in town (Duluth, MN) carries veneer plaster. I'm going to try to order some but can't find coverage info. How many 50 lb bags of Imperial basecoat and finish should be necessary for about 800 sq ft of new (straight walls and ceilings) construction? Thanks a lot!!

      Good morning Ebro Haugh, dude. Thank you, glad to entertain them. 🤔
      In the description of how it's done, you and your kids can go there and do the same thing within an hour, if you understand the so-called trick.🍻
      As far as how many bags you will need, I've no clues as I have been plastering and bidding by eye the job and necessary materials my whole career.🤷
      I can give you a tip, better to buy more than not enough.

      @@StuccoPlastering Thanks a lot for the reply, Kirk! I might do the trick and see if I can impress my kids - but that takes a lot, they generally aren't impressed with me! Pretend you're looking at a normal sized bedroom with a ceiling and tell me how many bags your eye tells you?

      Good morning Woddy, my fellow plasterer, man, just that mention makes me shiver.
      I have Lyme disease, which means my body temperature is always colder than the average person.
      Give me 85 to 100 degrees any day, I'm a happy dude, what you're saying I'm feeling to as winter is approaching fast.
      I hate to say this, but it's only 60 degrees here, and I'm cold. I know you guys know what real cold is over there, don't get me wrong, I've plastered in the falling snow with my shirt off, but prefer the heat any day.

    I am an architect, and I do not know how to construct. I still do not understand why "Schools of Architecture" do not teach one how to build? It would only make sense.
    If Kirk Giordano had a school of construction, I would be the first to join.
    I think I am going to watch every single one of his videos in a chronological order. I am sure I can learn more than what I learned in five years in a school of architure/university by doing so, at least in terms of knowing how to build structures.
    I just subscribed. Thanks master.
    By the way, is there like an order to the videos? Where should one start as a total "noob". Sure, I am an architect, but like it means much.

      Here in the uk the amount of times the boys slag of the architect is daily. They are fantastic at putting things down on the plan but cant think practically for how the joiners, bricklayers etc are meant to actually do the job. Its frustrating at times and can cost us a lot of extra work.

      Good Morning Juan, man, I sho-nuff like your style.
      Sorry, we do not post in chronological order. My son Jason and I accept projects to repair, some are useful to show and explain as we go along the process of restoring.
      We usually video one out of five repairs. The order follows the request I receive from phone or email inquiries. The results, video's scattered everywhere.
      Plus, my son, Jason, is 30 and works a lot and values a social life. The editing and posting these videos take a lot of his time.
      I do, however, try and title them as best as possible for homeowners who wish to try and save some dough and get sound advice on how to repair stuff themselves.
      For instance, If a homeowner wants to stucco a wall made of concrete, they would type in on our channel or Google, "how to stucco a concrete wall."
      Like magic, a video by us will most likely appear as we have close to 900, how-to videos.
      I believe anytime you have a company that warrants his work, you will find accurate information with their work. Many who work or have worked for others most of their lives often dont pay attention to detail or products, thus if it fails, they lose nothing.
      Its the person who is responsible for not just a contract, but also ethics or morals and who guarantees their work, who is most accurate with giving out advice.
      It's not just applications as this is 30% of being a contractor; the other 70% is in knowledge with materials and their purpose.
      This is what takes time in, not just reading the instructions, but actually applying and seeing for oneself, what happens over long periods from our own craftmanship.

      Howdy Woody, just experienced this shieat, a kid who was under 30 had so much going on with a home valued at possibly 3 million was playing the contractor.
      The order of things done was off, I tried my best to educate the order, but lost a shitload of time in the process, and will lose more when they continues as he put the cart before the horse.
      I sometimes think, man, it's time to retire on a hot island in 100-degree heat and drink alcohol with goofy umbrellas in them while viewing women wearing close to nothing.

    America has got a lot of things right, but its also got a lot of things wrong, taping joints and mud being the latter. Here in the UK, thankfully - its few and far between, its such an inferior finish to veneer/skimming in my opinion, it just seems like such a waste of time, let alone the countless trips as you say! Makes no sense to us over here, who skim or float and set. Good on you for showcasing the proper way to do things, Kirk an co. 😎👍🏻

    Hey Kirk, just finished veneer plastering my bathroom (first time plastering). Didn't go terrible but could have gone better. Any advice on doing a final skim coat on top of a diamond finish (which is over a diamond base). It's all completely set now. Love your channel. Hope you keep these videos coming.

      Evening Greg, they used to sell, "red Devel" in a small coffee like can, it was pure lime it would fill all cracks and holes without overlaying the smooth finish.
      or re-coat the wall.
      Or just apply a tiny bit of taping mud in the areas. It's painted, it won't show if you just repaint after the touchup.

    Hi Kirk....
    Another great interior video....
    Your usually not around for the next step as far a i have seen, but i have a question?
    I would hate to put, even the BEST quality latex primer on top of that diamond finish plaster....
    I would only consider and oil based primer.
    Probally even thinned just a bit with some Penetrol
    Do you agree?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 лет назад

      Howdy Joseph, with diam plaster, it's not as powdery as taping mud, but I would advise a quality primer and paint such as Sherman Williams. It wouldn't hurt to run a wet rag over the dried veneer either as it may accumulate dust.

    Hi Kirk. I'm planning to remove the wallpaper that is on a hallway of my old parent's home. I don't know the extent of the damage behind it yet, but the walls are not level in some areas. Also, the ceiling has some cracks in it. From what I can tell, all is plaster and wooden lath. I'm looking for sturdiness. I've only worked with quick set hot mud for large cracks and unfortunately, premixed compound for skims b/c it's only me and I need more time to work with. I hate sanding though and I am open to trying new things. What would you recommend? A Diamond base and veneer finish? Structo-lite base with a hot mud finish? I would very much appreciate your advice. Thank you.
    One more thing, I've been told by a contractor that you should always wait for plasters/compounds to fully dry before applying the next coat, but you always seem to do things in one day. I have the time to wait, but now I'm confused. Which would be better?

    I have an 1920's brick house with plaster on the inside of the brick walls. The walls are a bit beat up and I'd like to skim coat them. Would Diamond be a suitable product to use? I know I'd need to apply a bonding agent first.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 года назад

      Howdy Phil, I would recommend Diamond for your needs with its basecoat.
      As Diamond is a veneer plaster, this means if moister gets through the brick, and it will, it won't affect the Diamond plastering system.
      Moister would affect pure Gypsum or taping mud.
      I'd also recommend when you cleaned the interior surface, you apply a bonding agent like Weld Crete or similar, before the basecoat.
      FYI, Home Depot sells Quikrete Concrete Bonding Adhesive, it's suitable for indoor and outdoor applications, as Weld Crete is not sold at Home Depot or Lowes.

    Did I screw up? I did the base coat and let it dry a week and now as I'm reading the instructions on the USG products it's saying I should apply the finish coat while the base is wet.
    Should I apply the veneer finish if it's dry or should I use a spray bottle on the area? Or should I ask another base coat layer?
    Were just trying to get a matte/flat veneer finish on a fireplace.

      The base coat can be on for years but when you are going to apply the finish coat you now have to wet the base coat by whatever method you choose. I have a 10' by 10' kitchen that when I installed my cabinets to the wall, it became obvious that the plaster ceiling slopes 2" from one end to the other. The cabinets are flush at the low side so I don't want to add much thickness to that end. How would you make the ceiling level or at least look good with the cabinets? I've remodeled this old farmhouse all myself, and would love to hear your ideas! Thanks! :)

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 года назад +1

      Howdy Dolfans,
      If it were me, I cut a piece of wood to fill the gap, r just plug the hole with plaster. I don't mean to slope the entire ceiling with plaster and feather it in, as that's too much work, but to just fill the gap. Then paint the plaster in the hole the same color as the ceiling.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 года назад +1

      Evening Dolfans, no I wouldn't say crazy, If it were me Id just feather in the gap less than a hawk of mud, as if you go through that much work, no one will ever notice it, so the filling in the gaps works just fine.
      The house I was working on in this video had the exact same issue, you didn't notice it did you. Ops, it wasn't apparent until the cabinet went up.
      The point was that the room was as crooked as a dog's hind leg. But we feathered in just the gap, or a piece of wood trim can do it just as quickly.

    If you nail into it, will it crack and separate?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 года назад +1

      Howdy Phil, depends on many things, the substate is sheetrock, so there will be less bounce. Then if the walls or ceilings were plastered over spaced wood lath.
      If you nail through it into a beam, maybe not if the nails go in the field, " between the studs," possibly it can crack.
      Remember this is a veneer plaster that means Gypuum with Veneer added, sort of like rock.
      If you put a nail through limestone rock, will it separate, I'd say yes?
      Now, if this was taping mud, which is pure gypsum, chances of separating are minimal. But the Veneer has far too many benefits to worry about a nail cracking it.
      I tell most to hang a light or whatever, use screws as this will not vibrate the walls, vibrations on interior plaster, or exterior stucco walls cause hairline cracking.

    Hi Kirk - Love your videos, I feel like I learn so much and enjoy your style.
    I have a project where I'm going to apply a smooth coat in my bathroom here in Oakland over blue (purple) gypsum board. I had some leftover purple board scraps so I figured I'd experiment first and try to get a feel for applying the Imperial veneer basecoat.
    I felt like I had the right consistency and application went pretty well, but it took a couple hours to set up and I can scratch a line in the resulting finish with my fingernail. Here's a picture of the finish and the line I was able to scratch with my fingernail: i.imgur.com/A7eRDVA.jpg
    This seems way too soft for a plaster finish - any ideas what might have gone wrong?

      Good evening Stellar could be you used a dirty bucket or old base coat or didn't trowel it down properly as there are many bubbles.
      This bubbling is not common with basecoats properly applied and or mixed well.

      Hey Kirk
      First, your videos are spot on. You are a GREAT teacher!!
      Been working on our old house (built in 1859) just outside KC. Kansas. I've got hundreds of sq ft of blue board to plaster.
      Wish you were closer...
      Regards,
      Bill

      Howdy William sounds to me like many bags of lime plaster basecoat either diamond or imperial, both are made by USG, then again either Dimond or imperial finish coat, I prefer the Diamond as my finish coat as it has more lime or fat which can be trowel down better and brought back to life with water.
      If it were me I'd invest in a twenty-inch trowel as your going to need to put up a lot of material. Save that arm with much fewer strokes. Have fun, my friend.

      Kirk,
      I used to tell my high school wood-shop students about the 10,000 hour rule. You need a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to be good at anything (woodworking, guitar, surgery, law, plastering, etc). You past 10K hours long ago!!
      20" trowel it is! Our plaster walls were in terrible shape, so I replaced all interior stud walls with blue board. These 12' ceilings can be challeging, but I need to get to it.
      Thanks for you support and videos.
      Regards,
      Bill

      Hello William, your logic makes perfect sense. Thank you, if you're going to be spreading that much, remember the mud is light, so it's best to use the largest hawk and trowel.

    Hey kirk, I've been rendering for over 2 years now (23 years old). I just wanted to ask how you deal with the constant back pains that rendering causes. My lower back hurts every day after bending up and down, any tips? Cheers from Australia.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 лет назад +2

      Howdy John, rendering does not cause back pain unless you're using the wrong muscles.
      I wear a back brace for years now out of habit, as I used it so much those back muscles are indeed now a bit weak.
      Try keeping your head and chest up while plastering this tend to also keep your upper back strong, often too many guys look down, our heads are like bowling balls, heavy.
      balance your head above your lower spine or your arse, chest and head up, this should help.
