- Here's my thoughts on the new Eterna film simulation + internal Log recording profile. In this film, some live time grading and short review of some of the nice juicy new features of Fujifilm's new X-H1. Adobe's Premiere Pro is used for the edit. All location footage shot on the X-H1.
Hey great video , well explained . Great pace and audio super crisp you most def have a new subscriber. I get my XH1 next week so excited its my first fuji camera. Keep up the great work.
Good first purchase I say!
Excellent video and editing tips. Thanks for showing some F-log editing!
Thanks Jeremy, much appreciated
Do you ever use the classic chrome simulation for video?
I generally don't use it no. I do like it for some photographic work, but I find it too brick wall if used in video work. In terms of video only, I don't like the skin tones rendered when shooting for video.
You are the coolest guy on RUclips I've seen so far, you don't mess around in this video and you get straight to the point, loved it 👊 I currently shoot with the xt-2 and will soon be putting up my travel videos from Indonesia and Sydney if you're interested!
Excellent video. Thanks for showing the HSL curves, no one ever talks about that.
Thank you Jer
Thanks for this Neale - I've followed your wedding blog for a while and watched your Holiday Vlog - loved the pacey edit and the sense of humour in there (those souvenirs!) and you've trumped it here. Great video and very helpful. I echo Tim's sentiments below - early days for your channel but keep producing footage this good and it will grow rapidly, I'm sure. Thanks for all the hard work and time that went into making this. Subs and thumbs up from me. I'm sticking with my X-T2 but I'm encouraged to see what you've achieved from a video perspective.
Thanks Gareth. I'll be keeping that X-T2 in my bag too. It's too good a camera to let go. Thanks for your encouraging comments too on the quality of filming etc.
Excellent video Neale, informative and professional. Cheers.
Thanks David.
Great video and the best title ever! Good work!
Thanks for the comment... I think the title inspired the film to be honest!
Hi Neale. So glad that I found your channel. Like your style a lot.
Thanks for the kind comment. Be uploading more next week.
Finally someone showing some low light
And it continues to amaze me... the XT4 of course now ups the game!
Great video Neale. Really informative. Looking forward to hearing you talk at the X Wedding event in June.
Thanks Steve... it's an event I'm REALLY looking forward to being a part of!
Finally someone that know the photo in video..what amazing camera movement and SHOT!
Thank you... are you an XH1 user?
@@photowalk.podcast nope i use xt3
Hi, just wondering whats the correct way to expose the F log? Stick 0 or 2 stop overexposed?
Hi, I personally think with Fuji's F Log just a 'slight' over exposure will see you fine. I wouldn't go 2 stop on this camera. Cheers, Neale
Yup. Keep it going with videos like this and youll hit that first 10k sub target asap. Very well done!
Thanks Leroy. Really kind.
Came across this via a Tweet from Kevin Mullins. Having very little experience of using video but being a Fuji user for the last few years I found it very interesting in terms of what could be achieved. The X-H1 is on my 'maybe' list but it certainly looks very capable for video. Many thanks. Subscribed!
Thanks Gary, and thanks Kevin for the tweet. There are so many things to like about this camera to be fair. I think there are a couple of glaringly obvious misses though... I would LOVED to have seen an articulated screen. Add this in and I would expect all those Canon 6D2 users (me included) would switch entirely to this tomorrow. It's a big miss sadly, because the inclusion of 4K and 120 fps... that's something that Canon users were shouting for.
Nice work Neale and thanks for the video.
Pleasure James and thanks for dropping by.
Thanks for this video. This is the best I have watched about the xh1
Thanks Anwar, that's very kind of you to say. I've seen some great films about the X-H1 - it's a really exciting camera all round!!!!
ARE YOU SOME KIND OF VOICEOVER ARTIST? My god I wish my voice sounded as good as yours! Nice video btw :)
Thanks for the kind comments. Actually I'm a radio man, or rather hail from radio roots. I came to photography and film making much later than the microphone. That's really why I intend to launch a podcast interviewing the amazing fascinating picture makers I meet! Cheers Mitch and all the best. Neale
Very well made video!!! On side note, your voice reminds me of optimus prime 🤣
Ummm, well there's a first. I'll remember to audition for the next time! :-)
Dendim lagi cari2 pencerahan sebelum eksekusi x-h1, share owning experience dong bg?
awesome video, and great channel!
Cheers Harry... really kind of you. Much appreciated. Kindest, Neale
How is your Audio so nice? Best I’ve heard for a RUclips video? Good job Dude!
Hi Louis, thank you for the kind comment. Audio wise, well funnily enough I'm about to make my first film on audio products tomorrow... so watch this space!
I'm using the X-T2, we have the internal flog and 120fps releasing in May. Never thought about using 400% DR, great tip!
Just tried accessing dynamic range - can't access it in video mode.
If you just use f-log by itself with the new XT2 firmware update it will give you all the dynamic range you need :). The firmware update is really nice, I just did a video on it and I'm super impressed. It really bumps up the value of the XT2 in my opinion. These firmware updates are what makes fuji unique. But yeah I don't think you can change the DR settings in video mode but I could be wrong
Did they add the F Log and 120p features? Did they add Eterna to the film simulation types, too?
Thanks for your video on log low light. What was your ISO set at? Thanks Mate!
Without the shooting data now from those clips, I really don't know. Apologies. I tend to keep it low when shooting video though.
Looks nice man :) Hi from Denmark
Great video. Your flog low light shots look very clear in terms of noise! Unusual I would say. Any noise reduction in post?
No especially no. No noise reduction going on. I graded carefully for sure, but that's all really.
@@photowalk.podcast thank you. Good job. It looks great!
Neal, sorry to tell you but... i really liked your video. Please? keep em coming.
Nice vid. I am not a video shooter and is interesting to see your point of view and why F-Log is a big deal. Regarding the DR there is no magic there, 400% DR is like shooting at base ISO (200) like you would do at 800 and compensate for exposure in post by 2 stop. It makes it however more simple with an in-body menu option.
Thanks for the tip there Sylvain. Appreciated.
You have a real talent and should go far, if you haven't already!
That's kind of you to say Adrian and very much appreciated as I try to push through more with this channel and ideas. Thank you.
Do you still use the H1 to this day?
Yes, in fact I just bought myself a second body! :-)
Hi, why don't you apply Fuji's lut on the flog footage before doing anything else? That corrects it back to a linear space after which corrections are easier to make.
Good thoughts!
Neal what memory cards would you recommend/use when recording video on Fujifilm cameras? Thanks.
Right now I'm using SanDisk 3Gb 300 Mb/s Extreme Pro cards. Working well.
@@photowalk.podcast 3Gb... is it enough? I've tried to use SanDisk Extreme PRO 128Gb 170 MB/s for two days for my Southern Germany trip - and it was full after 1.5 days...
P.S. - Fujifilm XT30
Good video, thank you!
I'm still looking for a video that directly compares eterna directly to the other film simulations so I can get a good sense of it...
Good point Keith... I kind of missed a trick there. All I would say is that if you're familiar with the others then you'd notice instantly that this is more muted, giving you more headroom in grading than the others for sure.
fireman sam
Or to actual film for that matter (stills)
I'm sure Eterna was where He-Man lived?
Great look at the Fuji H1 too Neale
Thanks Greg... He-Man was clearly a Fujifilm user!
Just saw your review. It's great. I had plan to sell my X-Pro2 and 10-24 to A7III + 16-35G. What I expected is video AF. Don't quite sure that X-H1 AF is better than X-T2 (I also owned X-T2).
Yes, it has been improved. It's still nowhere near a match for say the dual pixel set up on Canons, but it's good and I certainly enjoy using it.
and what about the touch screen.
Again okay, but I don't like touch screen stuff... I'm far more manual.
Thanks a lot !
It make me able to consider between go or not go to Sony.
Really enjoyed this video. Can I ask what app you're using for grading? I mainly use FCP and it didn't look like that.
Thanks Richard, kind of you. So I use a couple of things for grading. 1... Lumetri colour within Prem Pro, that's the basic place I go for grading. 2. A little bit of help from Red Giant's looks here, but not much. I'd say most of it was really the result of lumetri colour on this one. So what kind of problems are you getting with the way you're working?
Neale James my background is stills 30 years in catalogue and advertising. I currently shoot video on a Panasonic hcx1 for interview work and a Fuji xt1 for other stuff. I like what the xh1 is capable of. But this grading malarkey is new ground for me.
Oh I see.... so PLENTY of strong experience. I've no experience of the Panasonic brand and how easy/complex/quirky it can be to grade. The X-T1 is an interesting one, as the X-T2 is into a new generation of the way it deals with colour, resolution and so on. I'm not a technical pixel peeper of course, and I'm sure that comes across, but I just know I can manipulate far more with the 2 and now the X-H1 than I used to?
Did you ever work in radio? You have a great voice!
Funny you should say that: njvo.co.uk (I did indeed, and I also work as a voice artist)
Delicious audio on this video. What mic/audio setup do you use?
For the voice over parts I use a Neumann TLM103 through a decent preamp set up, final EQ through Audition... and then for the other bits, it was a Rode NTG4 using Audition's Voice Thickener preset. Thanks for the kind comments.
Neale James thanks for the quick reply. Not just the equipment but you’ve been blessed with a great voice, accent and vocal style.
Thank you very much for this video, Neale! Very informative and well explained. Seems the X-H1 is a lot bang for the buck right now. How do you think it compares to the A7 III, which is a little more expensive? Also, just a quick thing I noticed. When you were boosting the yellows in the Hue Saturation Curves you actually boosted the overall saturation. In order to just affect the yellows on your first click you need to set points around your dragging point, as you did later with the blues. Not a big deal as you didn't push anything far, though.
Also - what's your go to lens for the X-H1? My girlfriend bought an X-T2 with the 35mm f/2 a few months ago. It's a great allround setup! Keep up the good work, I subscribed.
Yeh, I noted that I did that following the film! But nobody noticed... or did they? ;-) So Sony systems... I have limited experience using them, but I would say that the whole unit is usually somewhat heavier than a Fuji when you consider choice of glass etc. I'm not an expert with the Sony though, so I best not comment really. So lens. Well, I'm going to surprise you in that for much of this I used the 10-24 F4.... just such a versatile lens... 16mm is another favourite. Thanks for your kind comments.
Do you know if Eterna is available for the Xt20?
Hi Patrick, I don't have the XT20 so not sure... but I do know this, its not on the XT2, so unlikely to be on the 20 I would think. Thanks for dropping by.
Nice video, Thank you! What's the progaram that you are using?
Thanks for the comment. I'm a Premiere Pro user, only because I love the way it talks neatly to Audition for my sound and Photoshop for any stills work. All married together, there's a real harmony to the workflow.
Thank you very much, Neale! :)
I feel like sonys a7s touted 14 stops only gets us 12 stops since you're pushing 2 stops overexposed, based on how noisy the darks look after grading, do you think the XH-1 should be 1 or 2 stops overexposed, meaning not 12 stops dynamic range but 10 or 11?
I've not tested that extensively to really look deep into the noise... but I found 1 stop over felt right.
Hi!, i'm looking for New VideoCamera, May i ask how's the ISO 6400 feel? (i already have D800)
Hey Jerry.... so, 6400 is not bad at all. You may need to work a little harder in post, but of course thats where the beauty of having these flatter profiles reside. I'm no expert in Nikon, but, from what I hear, and it's only what I hear, the video capabilities of these two systems could not be compared. The Fuji's a good bet I'd say. So easy to use, very intuitive and with a few more bells and whistles. AND can I add... I do not get paid or rewarded by Fuji to say any of this. I'm a Fujifilm AND Canon user, so I'm reasonably impartial.
thanks alot for your experience!
Amazing stuff. So F-log is basically a RAW for film? :-D
Hmmmm... kind of... not exactly the same, and certainly not the same latitude, but you could think of it in these terms to a degree. A subtle degree.
Great vid. Annoyed at you calling it Externa instead of Eterna several times in the vid though. lol
I know... I wince every time I hear it.... really wince... I wish I could just replace the movie with the corrected version, but sadly YT don't allow that. We can wince together Ram!
@@photowalk.podcast Even the greats wince at their work. Short film festivals are agony for film makers. Especially when their film appears 20% lighter than it did on the old Imac....
@@sclogse1 I bet you see some folk sliding off their seats... yeh I can imagine how it would be painful.
Great video Neale! Your VO sounds incredible. What's your audio setup for that?
For the voice over segs, its a Neumann TLM103 through an Apollo audio interface. Thanks for the kind comment Seth.
The eterna looked quite flat...
P.S: were u somehow saying that the IBIS feature is not a huge feature on XH1? Other than the Visa reason...
Good video, subscribing
Thanks Malek... the IBIS is important to me yes... I think it's an important feature due to the fact that Fujifilm did once say it would be difficult to do. Thanks for the kind comments. Neale
I love Brighton
How does this compare against the GH5?
Not used the GH5 Luke, so I can't answer that one I'm afraid.
name of music at the end?
It's Way Back by Niklas Gustavsson from Epidemic Sound
Nice, but I would have liked to see some examples with closeups of people to compare how well the skin tones are rendered on faces.
Good idea... certainly one I will make.
Make sure you check out Taskins film ruclips.net/video/3ATEs_G3wNc/видео.html in particular about 15 seconds in
Thank you. This film also helped by showing a variety of lighting situations and different grading of the Eterna profile. It was also a very nicely done short film - ruclips.net/video/IwxuyVsDplM/видео.html
great
Those shots were they handheld or were you using a stabilizer?
There's a real mixture in there Trystin, and good question. Let me list the ones that were handheld. All the Brighton ones; on the pier, the Booster fairground ride, the ones in the engine shed. They were all handheld.
If I am not mistaken, the XH1 has an IBIS 5 axis stabilization right?
I am a professional photographer working with Nikon gear. I am very interested in adding video to my packages but Nikon is quite terrible when it comes to video auto-tracking a moving subject. I considered moving to Canon for this specific reason but their photography tech is not that good (and man...the abysmal work to switch all the lenses from a brand to another). So I thought maybe something like a Fuji XH1 (maybe with a 23 lens to start) could be a nice Video add to my photography Nikon gear. So I have two questions for you:
1 - Have you tried the video AF tracking feature on this XH1?
2 - How come you have only 331 subscribers with such a high end level of quality?
Thanks a lot for the help
Tim
Yep, it does Tim, the stabilization is a strong feature of this. I did try the AF tracking and with the time I had it, I was impressed. As for the last question Tim, I'm flattered, early dawn stuff I guess. Thanks.
nice video
Does X-H1 has 8bits F-LOG?
Do you think that Fujifilm is hitting up that A7 market?
Well, I'm not sure I'm quite the expert to able to answer that. They both have their firm followings for good reason. I would say having owned a Sony that this feels so much more intuitive, less clunky to use. Though that is absolutely personal preference I know.
everything seems good other than the battery only runs for a terrible 15mins.
Hey Kenny, I must admit this is not what I've found. I'm an ambidextrous system user; Fujifilm and Canon - and I'll admit to being less happy with battery life on the Fuji flavoured cameras I have owned, but... this was really not as bad as I had feared. I used one battery for a lot of on/off recordings on the Brighton Pier sequences filmed for this piece with a reasonable amount of reviewing too... and then further up in town recorded a half hour interview, most of which was serviced by the same battery. I'd need to do more testing, but the very low battery life is not something I experienced.
maybe it is just my monitor but the whole video looks kinda underexposed
Maybe. It looks fine on mine, but then I quite like low key
@@photowalk.podcast i have a question though, my X-T30 is on the way and I am very excited about the 200mbps per second, but not sure if it will actually make any difference. Did you run some tests seeing whether shooting in 200mbps makes any difference or not?
@@FrameByFrame96 not especially no in terms of tests. But I have now made it a habit to shoot at 200mbps and the images hold together very well in grading.
