I really enjoy watching the slow, thoughtful process of you remodeling your home. These old well-crafted pieces are worth restoring and using. I look at some supposed 'perfect' homes and find them to be sterile. So much plastic and throw-away items. Your home is and will be even more lovely because of the care you are taking to respect the craftsmanship of these pieces.
Thanks so much! After five years I am starting to be less patient and would love to see the build progress faster but then I remind myself that the couple that had this house built had to wait for almost 15 years before they could move in! I think we live in such a fast paced society that we have lost the virtue of patience… But still very excited to see this coming together very soon 😂
So lovely! Your Cook’s Cottage is so cozy and exactly where I’d love to be on a chilly winter’s afternoon. I see Tigrette loves it too! I am really enjoying seeing the progress in the kitchen. I think it is going to be a work of art, not to mention a wonderful place to cook and entertain!
Thank you! I can't wait for it to be that place to cook and entertain!
The landscape with snow looks beautiful.
And the kitchen is really coming together, all looking good.
Happy new year. 🎉
Thank you!
Awww look at Tigrette enjoying the warmth of the stove
Everything looks great. Just love those doors
Me too!
Lovely video, everything looks peaceful & cozy.
Thanks!
We very much enjoy following the progress on your home.
Our copy of your beautiful book arrived before Christmas. A wonderful gift for my wife and me here in Washington State US.
Oh I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying the videos and the book! Thanks!
I am eager to see how you design your kitchen. Your aesthetic sense is wonderful.
Thanks! I can’t wait to see the final result either!!
Really nice farmhouse and grounds. Love the kitty.

Thank you so much!
I had the joy of receiving your new book for Christmas. 🎉
You can feel the same loving warmth while reading or just enjoying looking at your book.
Thank you for the countless hours spent and obvious intentionality!
Thank you! So happy to hear you like it!
All the hard work is worth it. It looks great so far, built with integrity and sympathy for the original structure
Thanks
What a handy husband you have Marloes! You are blessed indeed with a lovely family and someone who takes such pride in his work. He reminds me of our oldest son, who loves building and is very precise with his work. I hope to come to your area one day and check out all the beautiful places you have shared with us and I would really love it if my son and his wife went to visit France. I am so enjoying your cookbook. My daughter was able to get my one for Christmas. Its lovely! I'm just watching this video with my morning coffee in the warmth of the house. Its -41c here in Alberta this morning! Brrr! 🥶🥶🥶
Thank you for your kind comment! Love to hear you’re loving the book. Stay warm! 🔥
really beautiful snowy country landscape view from your home! love that little cat sitting in front of the fireplace!
Thank you❣️I would love to hear you talk to your kitty❣️🐈❤️
Marlowes, I love your old chippy restored items. They don’t need to look brand new, their aged but cleaned up look is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this renovation journey.
Thanks! I would love to keep some doors like this but Olav absolutely hates that look… So we need to meet in the middle!
@@FrenchCountryLife absolutely.

Thank you so much for the encouragement!
It’s going to be so beautiful when completed.
I hope so! In my mind it’s gorgeous 😂
Very nice!
Thanks!
Thanks for the update….everything will be great
Thanks!
Ha Marloes, vanuit Eindhoven wens ik jou en je gezin een heel goed Nieuwjaar! En succes met al die fraaie deuren. Mooi dat jullie zoveel respect hebben voor het huis en haar bouwers. Top!
Dank je wel! Ook voor jou de beste wensen!
So beautiful!
Thanks!
Mastique is putty in 🇺🇸...the process is known as reglazing. It's a lot of work and takes patience to do neatly. Love watching your progress and can imagine the end result...warm, comfortable, serene and workable. It is hard work but such a sense of accomplishment. Be careful with your backs...herniated discs can create problems later in life...around 70. You don't want that. Bonne soiree
Thanks for being so concerned about our health! It indeed is a lot of work but the reward will be so amazing! And we’re making lots of memories along the way!
The doors are absolutely stunning!!
Thanks!!
Just found your channel. I’m intrigued. New subscriber.

Its a labour of love but so worth it ❤️🏴xx
Thank you

Marlowes, your episodes are always such a treat and offer so much information but this one was exceptional. Your photography/videoing is so professional, especially with the way you narrate with such a calm and soothing voice. You may not remember but I wrote recently to ask your ceiling heights as I will be building in a small Colonial village in Mexico in the next year. I have the same feeling as you do. Although this house will be a new build I want it to feel it has always been there. In watching this episode it became clear that I need to pay more attention to Olaf’s channel, as well, for building tips and ideas. Thank you for such a wonderful channel. So well done! xx Pamela
Thank you so much Pamela! I was actually thinking this episode was so boring. Maybe it is just the fact the I would love to see more progress :) We work every day and still it feels like I have nothing interesting to show...
I am not sure if I answered your question about the ceiling height? Did I? We did debate quite a lot about the heights we wanted to choose. In general I have noticed I really like spaces to feel open and spacious but the risk is that they aren't cozy when you make things too big and ceilings too high. I am still learning. But as the building works progress I am very happy with the difference in the height from the kitchen area and the open space towards the big window. It feels very balanced. All the best with designing and building your home! Don't hesitate if you have any other questions!
Another amazing video ❤
@@marshagaravaglia8149thank you!
Love the work you have done and the vision going forward....good work!
Thanks!
I really enjoy watching your videos. The shopping excursions are so fun. You are creating a unique and beautiful space to live in Deborah. North Carolina 😊❤
Thanks for being here!
How I love the winter landscape ! Happy New Year to you and your family Marloes ! 🇳🇱💕🌷

Purrrrrfection.

I’m so happy to hear that!
It’s going to be so beautiful!

It’s coming along nicely!
Merci!
Dear Marloes, happy new year and good progress on the building site. 5hanks for sharing Love Barbara
Thank you!
Of course as you have a great vision, it will be beautiful❤
Thank you
Old window glass is handblown and precious and has little bubbles, New glass is flat. You remove the paste linseedoilpaste with a heat gun
I know but this honestly doesn’t look like old glass. I think it may have been replaced at some point already.
Thanks for the advice on how to remove the paste. I was afraid the glass would break from the heat and that I might burn the wood… I have used the heat gun to strip doors before.
Gorgeous
Thank you!
Nice woy. Mastique is putty in English
Sushi…😽🇨🇦👍🥂Happy New Year!
happy new year!!😉
Thanks!
Bellissimo 👍👋
Grazie!
If they were pitch pine, would have been good to get a caustic dip.
I have considered that but haven’t found anywhere they do this around here… I know friends from Beaujolais did this as the paint on their door just wouldn’t come off and they weren’t going to paint the door.
They do that a lot in the UK. I had a huge old dresser and had it dipped and it came back without any paint on it. Saved me days of effort and was so worth it.
As someone who has stripped layers of paint off my old house doors, I appreciate your efforts.
Thanks!
Hi Marloes, would ‘afbijt’ not work to easier remove those layers of paint?
I’ve tried it on the cabinet doors but it didn’t really work and those are such strong chemicals…
Your effort to maintain the originality of your remodeled home is outstanding. The look of your home when completed will be so rewarding for you. It will have new stories now to add to its history, that will be memories of all the labor, work and sourcing of items, you have done over the years. I am sure you are waiting for the day when it will be a full functioning home just the way that you want it to be. Your peaceful life and beautiful home is something that you can always say, "We did it together." Every job you have done has been done with such care, thoughtfulness, love and precision which is embedded in the structure of your home forever. A home of love.
I love your comment! It is exactly why we chose to buy this house and take on this huge project. We told ourselves it would be such an adventure and experience for our family and that we would build so many memories. Nothing beats the feeling of building a home for your family with your family. Our friend Pascale has often come and she really helps out a lot. While we were removing the glass together we said: when you're coming in a few months and we'll take the gorgeous brocante plates out of the cabinet for dinner we'll be saying to each other: "Remember that horrible task of removing the putty?!" and we'll be so happy with the result.
A home of love indeed!
I so love these renovation videos ❤ and your style is perfect for the house 😊
Thank you!
i was awake for 15 minutes this morning before i could move a muscle ….
Thanks for sharing what is going on as it is a boring January here in New Jersey. Your love of your house and hard work will always show ❤
Thanks!
Love and appreciate all your videos. ❤
Thank you!
Wow.. your vision and Olaf 's skills together is really incredible. That cabinet you are making is going to be gorgeous!!! You have such a beautiful collection of old doors! Your home is coming together so wonderfully!
Thank you!
💜
Thoughtful, slow, beautiful video. Thank you!!
So very exciting, 🇨🇦
Merci!
I'm new to your channel and loving it. Renovating an old farmhouse in the Morvan myself so eager to share with fellow lovers of these old stones ! I love your walls in the cook's cottage; how did you paint or finish them ?
Welcome to the channel! We put a traditional lime render on the walls (a mixture of lime, sand and water). The color is defined by the color of the sand you use. We didn’t paint it but you could if you wanted with a lime based paint (which is not the same as chalk paint like Annie Sloan etc)
Thanks ! As we insulated with ouate de cellulose and then put up plaster board a lime mixture wouldn't do. We painted with a lime based natural paint but it has a slight yellow to peach colored undertone and I really wanted more of a linen color. Still looking !
@@liciatouzet6882looked at Farrow&Ball colors, they have a beautiful range of muted colors and beiges. Also Ressources peintures have beautiful lime wash colors. Linen tones like you say you’d like. Hope this helps!
@@liciatouzet6882also the French brand Libéron have a really nice neutral called lait d’amande. It seems to have a slightly green grey undertone. Hope this helps!
@@FrenchCountryLife merci beaucoup je regarde tout cela ! Et bonne continuation pour les travaux !
Thank you for the interesting journey you are sharing with us.
Thank you for the update!
It’s astounding. I am anxious to see where you’re at in June when I come to visit you and stay at your Writer’s Cottage. I hope that you’ll not mind that I don’t pitch in while there … vacation and all …. ❤
Haha! I’m excited to see the progress too! Looking forward to meeting you here in June!
Use a ”speedheater” instead. It is expensive BUT extremely efficient for any kind of renovation involving paint
Thanks for the suggestion
Hola feliz año 🎉 sabes q en RUclips ver tu blog en tv no tiene traducción en español solo en inglés 😬
Yes I’m sorry I didn’t put the translations this time. I’m trying to keep posting updates but struggle to find the time, I’m sorry!
Pourquoi faire des vidéos en Anglais quand on est Français ?????? Aucun intérêt !
Je ne suis pas Française! 😇
I would of completely sanded them and clear coated because they are so lovely….
I did consider that but Olav doesn't really like that style so we try to meet in the middle. I am going for a wooden floor in the bedroom and am debating whether to leave the doors there unpainted or not. So I think it will balance out with these being painted. But I so hear you! I love this look. So unfortunate that Olav doesn't but I'm sure it will all look beautiful!
Everything is so beautiful. I can envision the future…
Thanks!
I ll be waiting to see the final result. Im sure it will be amazing!!!😍👌
Thanks. I am soooo eager to see it too! Patience is a virtue…
Thank You. It's magical!!!
🙏☺️
Love your home, very beautifully done. I’ve been thinking of moving to France but it seems very isolated there, like the population outside of Paris or the Riviera is very sparse and lonely. I’m from NY, used to having a lot of amenities and friends around. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...?
I hope there will be others from our community that can share their thought!
In my experience it really depends on where you go. Some villages have amenities. For example the house I filmed recently nl.airbnb.com/rooms/918742452568114831?adults=3&check_in=2024-02-11&check_out=2024-02-14&source_impression_id=p3_1705003457_k%2BB0rPN5Lh1%2BHQVN&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=33eeae4d-45c1-4271-a9ea-eedda3a4720c is in a small but very lively village with all the amenities and a large group of international and English speaking inhabitants.
But for many things, when you're in the countryside, you'll need to take your car for sure. On the other hand, France knows many quieter cities as well. Beaune for example, which is 20 minutes from where I live, is a very small city that feels like a village but it has everything you would need. And some areas such as Dordogne are known to have large international communities as well. Another idea might be to bring your friends :) and start a community or share a large house together. Plenty of options if you look into it and think about what it is that you truly want and what would be your ideal way to live in France. I believe the more detailed you are about it, the easier it will be to find that! My two cents!
I love your style. Very clean and comfy
Thanks
I do not like to sand! Keep up the good work.
I don’t either 😂 Thanks for the shout out!
Beautiful china cabinet.....love the concrete blocks and the antique doors. Very unique and beautiful! Cheers!
Thank you!
MARLOES - such a beautiful snowy landscapei in rural Burgundy! Totally on board with your thoughts on taking it back to the natural wood and not just painting over "old" finishes - as labor intensive as that is, the results are worth it. Thank you as always for sharing.
Thanks for the support!
Just enjoyed lunch and a cup of tea while watching your vlog. I’d get up out of the comfy chair to crack on with my own renovations but I’m reluctant to disturb a certain someone’s nap if my lap is no longer there. Who am I kidding, I’ve warmed the chair up now so they’ll claim it quickly after I’ve gone!
Haha! I so recognize that! It’s so tempting to procrastinate! But even more rewarding to get things done and make process! Get to it!
I love your sympathetic approach to the renovations. You are creating a beautiful home. Happy New Year and look forward to your upcoming projects in 2024.
Thanks! Best wishes for the new year to you too!
I have a sheepskin rug in front of my fireplace. I think Tigrette would love that. If you don't want an animal skin you can use a quilted cat basket. My cat just loves that warm and cozy spot!
Oh I can imagine your cat loves that! Tigrette has a (faux fur) one in my son’s room that she loves to sleep on. He made a whole bed for her that she instantly adopted 😂
Your house is more lovely with each episode. Everything is peaceful, warm and inviting. ❤
Thank you!
Love what you’re doing with the windows, old putty around the glass is often a “ pane” ..bad joke lol
Haha! It put a smile on my face ☺️
I so enjoy watching the progress in your home. Lots of hard work but your efforts will all pay off.
Thank you! I wish I could show more progress… slowly but surely!
We could ask you to design and fit out a kitchen or room in our home to your choice without us seeing it until completion and we’d still love it 🥰
Oh that’s so sweet of you to say that! ❤️
I love the old doors and windows. They’ll be perfect in your space.
Thanks!
It's wonderful that you are honoring the old character of the house!
Thanks! It's not for everybody and to each their own. Personally I am both in shock and really happy that some other people take all the old features out and modernize these old farmhouses. It allows us to salvage doors, fireplaces, windows and furniture and so much more!
His cabinet and your doors are beautiful.
Thanks! Can’t wait to see it all finished!
Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen!🐈
Neither can I!!
It will look lovely😍
Thanks! Slowly but surely!
