    I really enjoy watching the slow, thoughtful process of you remodeling your home. These old well-crafted pieces are worth restoring and using. I look at some supposed 'perfect' homes and find them to be sterile. So much plastic and throw-away items. Your home is and will be even more lovely because of the care you are taking to respect the craftsmanship of these pieces.

      Thanks so much! After five years I am starting to be less patient and would love to see the build progress faster but then I remind myself that the couple that had this house built had to wait for almost 15 years before they could move in! I think we live in such a fast paced society that we have lost the virtue of patience… But still very excited to see this coming together very soon 😂

    What a handy husband you have Marloes! You are blessed indeed with a lovely family and someone who takes such pride in his work. He reminds me of our oldest son, who loves building and is very precise with his work. Love watching your progress and can imagine the end result...warm, comfortable, serene and workable. It is hard work but such a sense of accomplishment. Be careful with your backs...herniated discs can create problems later in life...around 70. You don't want that. Bonne soiree

    Marlowes, your episodes are always such a treat and offer so much information but this one was exceptional. Your photography/videoing is so professional, especially with the way you narrate with such a calm and soothing voice. You may not remember but I wrote recently to ask your ceiling heights as I will be building in a small Colonial village in Mexico in the next year. I have the same feeling as you do. Although this house will be a new build I want it to feel it has always been there. In watching this episode it became clear that I need to pay more attention to Olaf’s channel, as well, for building tips and ideas. Thank you for such a wonderful channel. So well done! xx Pamela

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much Pamela! I was actually thinking this episode was so boring. Maybe it is just the fact the I would love to see more progress :) We work every day and still it feels like I have nothing interesting to show...
      I am not sure if I answered your question about the ceiling height? Did I? We did debate quite a lot about the heights we wanted to choose. In general I have noticed I really like spaces to feel open and spacious but the risk is that they aren't cozy when you make things too big and ceilings too high. I am still learning. But as the building works progress I am very happy with the difference in the height from the kitchen area and the open space towards the big window. It feels very balanced. All the best with designing and building your home! Don't hesitate if you have any other questions!

    Your effort to maintain the originality of your remodeled home is outstanding. The look of your home when completed will be so rewarding for you. It will have new stories now to add to its history, that will be memories of all the labor, work and sourcing of items, you have done over the years. I am sure you are waiting for the day when it will be a full functioning home just the way that you want it to be. Your peaceful life and beautiful home is something that you can always say, "We did it together." Every job you have done has been done with such care, thoughtfulness, love and precision which is embedded in the structure of your home forever. A home of love.

      I love your comment! It is exactly why we chose to buy this house and take on this huge project. We told ourselves it would be such an adventure and experience for our family and that we would build so many memories. Nothing beats the feeling of building a home for your family with your family. Our friend Pascale has often come and she really helps out a lot. While we were removing the glass together we said: when you're coming in a few months and we'll take the gorgeous brocante plates out of the cabinet for dinner we'll be saying to each other: "Remember that horrible task of removing the putty?!" and we'll be so happy with the result.
      A home of love indeed!

      Welcome to the channel! We put a traditional lime render on the walls (a mixture of lime, sand and water). The color is defined by the color of the sand you use. We didn’t paint it but you could if you wanted with a lime based paint (which is not the same as chalk paint like Annie Sloan etc)

    Love your home, very beautifully done. I’ve been thinking of moving to France but it seems very isolated there, like the population outside of Paris or the Riviera is very sparse and lonely. I’m from NY, used to having a lot of amenities and friends around. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...?

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  8 месяцев назад

      I hope there will be others from our community that can share their thought!
      In my experience it really depends on where you go. Some villages have amenities. For example the house I filmed recently nl.airbnb.com/rooms/918742452568114831?adults=3&check_in=2024-02-11&check_out=2024-02-14&source_impression_id=p3_1705003457_k%2BB0rPN5Lh1%2BHQVN&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=33eeae4d-45c1-4271-a9ea-eedda3a4720c is in a small but very lively village with all the amenities and a large group of international and English speaking inhabitants.
      But for many things, when you're in the countryside, you'll need to take your car for sure. On the other hand, France knows many quieter cities as well. Beaune for example, which is 20 minutes from where I live, is a very small city that feels like a village but it has everything you would need. And some areas such as Dordogne are known to have large international communities as well. Another idea might be to bring your friends :) and start a community or share a large house together. Plenty of options if you look into it and think about what it is that you truly want and what would be your ideal way to live in France. I believe the more detailed you are about it, the easier it will be to find that! My two cents!

      Oh I can imagine your cat loves that! Tigrette has a (faux fur) one in my son’s room that she loves to sleep on. He made a whole bed for her that she instantly adopted 😂

    Love what you’re doing with the windows, old putty around the glass is often a “ pane” ..bad joke lol

    We could ask you to design and fit out a kitchen or room in our home to your choice without us seeing it until completion and we’d still love it 🥰

      Thanks! It's not for everybody and to each their own. Personally I am both in shock and really happy that some other people take all the old features out and modernize these old farmhouses. It allows us to salvage doors, fireplaces, windows and furniture and so much more!
