  • Bonjour!
    An update on our pantry build!
    Recipe for the tourte
    1 store-bought puff pastry (in the video I use two but I didn't have time to prebake the bottom with baking beans so it wasn't cooked enough so I recommend you leave it out and just put the filling in the oven dish without using pastry as a bottom)
    1 onion, minced
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 small green cabbage, chopped finely
    600g potatoes, peeled and diced
    1 tablespoon cumin
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    200g crème fraîche
    1 tablespoon dijon mustard
    150g camembert
    Boil the potatoes in salted water until cooked. Meanwhile fry the onion and garlic with the cumin for a few minutes in some olive oil. Add the cabbage and the nutmeg stir fry on medium to high heat for about 7 minutes until cooked. Transfer the mixture to an oven dish and mix with the potatoes.
    Mix the crème fraîche with the mustard and spread over the vegetables. Cut the camembert in slices and put on top. Put the pastry on top, and tuck it in on the sides to make a closed tart. Cut a slit in the centre of the pastry. If you want you can brush the pastry with an egg yolk or milk. Bake for about 20 to 30 minutes at 180 Celsius until golden brown.
    Sending love!
    Marloes

    LOVE Farrow & Ball. I would suggest that if you want to "deepen the color" of the new green cabinet doors is to use a little brown antiquing wax to give it more dimension and some of the brown hue of the F&B paint. A little goes a long way. Marloes you have every right to be a perfectionist with this lovely home of yours - it's all the small things that elevate something from just ok to spectacular. Thank you as always bringing us along!

    I love the original color with the Farrow and Ball paint. It’s has such a calming , earthy feel to it.I don’t like the prep work I just like to get to the painting though it is the most important part. Thank you for always sharing the beauty of the countryside where you live. When ever I see your new videos I make sure I take a quite time of my day and make some tea to watch them. They have the same affect as meditation. Thank you for all the beauty that you share. As a wonderful teacher I had once told me “ the world needs beauty “. It has become my mantra. Have a wonderful week.

    I enjoy watching your progress on the kitchen! Good to know for certain about the paint before you get to the actual kitchen cabinets. Goodness, the scenery where you live is so beautiful. I love how you intersperse clips of it throughout video. I will definitely be trying the tourte recipe-it looks really delicious! I’m going to be buying another copy of your cookbook. I gave the first one to a friend of my daughter. She just graduated from college with a degree in French. She will be coming to France this summer to teach English. I told her if she ever found herself in Burgundy she should contact you for things to see and do. Hope that’s ok! Have a great week!😊

    Loving how it all is coming together. We don't have F&B in Australia but we have Porter's Paint which is simiar with the intensity of colour which cannot be replicated. I have a deep olive green cabinets with white tiles in my walkin pantry while the rest of my kitchen is white. Lovely to see Tigret having a well earned break.❤

    You can remove label/sticker glue by spreading a bit of general cleaning liquid (like Ajax) over it with your finger. It’ll come loose within a few minutes and then you can gently scrape it off. Don’t wait too long though because if you do, the paint will come loose too (yes, you can use it as a décapant too). After the job, be sure to wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

      Thanks! One little note about farrow & ball wall paint (which is not the same as woodwork paint); they are known for needing anywhere between 3 and 6 layers (not kidding) so be prepared for that as some people hate the paint for that reason!

      I used blue gray. That is a Farrow & Ball color that the paint shop said they had the reference / formula for so both are the same color. They just don’t look the same as the original brand uses more pigments.

    Great video! For some reason every time you are in the house I try to figure out where you are but never can. I know there was a video when you explained…the stable, the barn, the farmers house. Now I try to remember the Cooks Cottage, ??? There is the space where you live now with the wood beam over the window and door and big fireplace that is where the dove cote is outside, then there is the part with the big black door….? Then there is the section with Tigrette’s Veranda, not sure which part it belongs to but ai know it is in the back. And somewhere there are bedrooms upstairs….? Sorry, I know it is three living spaces but I am so confused. I have to take notes! Love from NJ ❤

    • @carole-f8x

      I forgot, also the part where outside you didn’t like the paint color and you put white around the door and window.

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  7 месяцев назад +1

      No worries! I can understand it’s confusing because even to us things are changing constantly. The place we live at the moment with the dove cote is the cook’s cottage. We rent it out in spring and summer. Our bedrooms are on the first floor, in the same part as the cook’s cottage. The big black doors lead to the former barn that we’re turning into our kitchen and pantry. The big wall I didn’t like is the back side of the hangar, the big black wood paneled part of the house to the right of the cottage when looking at the front of the house. We’ll do a full tour at some point but too busy renovating and it will be nicer to do that when we’ve progressed more.

    Alas, so many people don't understand that paint brands are not created equal. "They" say that any paint color can be matched, but will have the results you just experienced. Each paint company has their own proprietary base colors and pigment colors. Farrow & Ball may be more expensive, but they are consistent and that's why their paint colors are so beautiful. I love the original F&B color you are using. Your shelves and cabinets will be beautiful. I also have some cabbage in the refrigerator that I'm going to make the recipe with. Thanks, Marlos!

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Yes I have had so many discussions with friends in the past saying exactly that when they told me it was nonsense and I shouldn’t buy they original f&b paint and I’ve always said (and used it so often so I can tell the difference!) that I have yet to find a perfect match and I don’t believe it exists. I did it this time to test it as I really wanted to prove it 😂
      So as you understand I have gone back to my friends with a “told ya” kind of message and I sure know this was the last time I bought other paint which by the way was just as expensive or even more expensive than the original farrow & ball!

    It will be darker in the pantry and have no natural light. Even if you used the same Farrow & Ball paint it would look different in there. Let your beautiful color be ok in the pantry but get the F&B paint for painting your kitchen and the other places that are out in the natural light. It will be gorgeous and no one (but you) will notice any difference. I can guess you may have saved some money with the alternate brand. I understand F&B is pretty pricy, no? Can’t wait to see more of your progress.

    • @FrenchCountryLife

      Yes true! That is why I dared doing the experiment for the pantry as I kind of expected these results. This paint was just as expensive or maybe slightly more expensive than farrow & ball actually!

    Yes I see the difference in color, the first is far more complex and well adapted to an antique look, I have the same problem with my local paint, which is good quality but has very 'flat' colors (as you say)... sadly it costs a lot more money to get a paint with those subtleties.

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  8 месяцев назад +2

      Well this paint was just as expensive! They said they are one of the few places where you can get the Farrow & ball colors mixed to their high quality professional paints but the difference to me is huge. I think the paint was even more expensive than the f&b ones but it is more complicated to get the f&b one where I live and I only had a small window to finish the paint job…
      It was a good test. But I wouldn’t do it again.

    Great job on the pantry shelves and cabinets! A little heat from your hair dryer can help release the glue from your cabinet labels. Also, to better match the original paint tone, you could test some brown antiquing glaze over the finished paint job, on a hidden spot of course.

  • @earthlightstudio
    @earthlightstudio 8 месяцев назад +1

    You're absolutely right about the difference in the colours and pigment level of the different paints. The pigment/transparency of the base paint colour has a huge impact on the final result. If you were to add a bit more red pigment and a bit more black, you could get very close to the F&B hue, but there is a depth and warmth in F&B that likely can't be matched with cheaper products. Your sensitivity and commitment to your aesthetic is inspiring :)

    With your uncooked pastry, because you put hot filling in raw pastry this would have caused the problem. It is always best to blind bake a pastry base. Now you can also buy tart tins with tiny holes all over to crisp the pastry even better.
