  • Cape Town residents are mopping up after two days of inclement weather which caused widespread disruptions and damage, including loss of shelter, localised flooding, fallen trees, electricity outages, and road closures. Lwandle informal settlement near Strand was one of the hardest hit areas.

    This breaks my heart. It is so bitterly cold in Cape Town and still raining. Praying for them to get the assistance they need.

    The land is not meant for occupation - it is a wetland so no proper natural drainage exists - the water stays above ground when it rains.
    It is the same every winter - same sad story.

    I used to live in Gordons Bay and and personally witnessed flooding in this area. Driving off the N2 the whole road was flooded because of a blocked drainage canal and municipal workers were busy clearing the canal . Why don't people put their garbage in the bins provided.? Don't they realise that it is for their own good.

    Does such land for relocation that he is referring to exist? Or are we in the Western Cape meant to forfeit our farms and botanical gardens in order to provide safe squatting space for the influx of South Africans from lesser and poorly governed provinces?

    Maybe we need to create our own mini-Venices where we have all these informal settlements built in flood plains. Construct canals and people can commute using boats.

    Why don't they think of better ways to build they shacks, I am sure they can better prepare for winter. It is sad, but by now we must know the government is not helping so we must try and resolve our own situations. That is the reality of the situation

      As for me being narrow minded... I've got too much life experience at my age not to take anything out of perspective.

    Who pays for their relocation? They intentionally relocated from the Eastern Cape and stole land here in the Western Cape demanding free land, free electricity and free everything, while the real owners of the Western Cape Mus pay for everything.

      The DA repeatedly tries to get people NOT to build where there is risk of flooding but they refuse to listen! More people keep arriving looking for work, it's impossible to keep up with limited resources. As it is the municipality is working 24/7 to help those affected.

    2024. Informal settlements has to end South Africa. Rather build one bedroom flats and let people pay. It's too cold for this ANC and DA. Please do what's right. Communicate with the people properly. Food and blankets won't help
