Lesotho, the Kingdom of Snow | Deadliest Journeys

- Lesotho is a small kingdom landlocked in the gigantic territory of South Africa. Among the poorest in the world, this high country has breathtaking landscapes, but above all it has a rare and precious asset in Africa: water. During the long winter months, the country is covered with snow and in the middle of the peeled mountains, there is even a ski slope very popular with South Africans. On the dirt tracks and deserted roads that cross the mountains, Alice and Fébellina struggle to find new customers for their old taxi. New encounters, mechanical troubles, but also fear and bursts of laughter punctuate the wanderings of the two friends. Justice has no place in the heart of these lost mountains. Cattle rustlers and other criminals sow terror in isolated villages. The police do not venture there: there is no road. The only alternative to crime: the mounted militia. Fierce horsemen who tirelessly chase outlaws from valley to valley. They are nicknamed The Wrath of the Lion. In the no man's land that separates South Africa from Lesotho, vehicles have to face a winding road strewn with pitfalls and cross the Sani Pass, a pass with a sinister reputation, under the gusts of wind. There are very few gas stations in the interior of the country, gasoline is scarce. Reckless drivers face the precipices to supply the lost villages.
The young man helping the old person on a house is a real hero. It's a pity that we just watch and enjoy these videos. Surely they should be a way to help these people. Send him to learn first aid or something. Give him more than a horse for him to continue his kindness. The world needs more people like him.
Correction on Lesothians, the nationality of people of Lesotho is known as Basotho (plural) and Mosotho (singular). great documentary thought, its always great to have a home country being documented, keep producing more and more
I'm a Basotho but I might just start calling myself a Lesothian. Americans will think I a Scottish.
You're a Basotho?
O mosotho wena heban
I have a physical disability and sometimes it's hard for me to live a simple life because I always think my condition is limiting me myself to see a brighter future. After watching this documentary I compared myself and the simple life that people from Lesotho lives. I've realized that I'm wealthy with my disability. Let's appreciate God and the experience of life, some people are really struggling out there and it's not their choice.
I'm feeling so sorry for your condition but NEVER GIVE UP you are mr nice guy
Wow those two women, they are so optimistic singing and smiling through it all
I knew Lesotho exists since we were taught geography in school and that it's surrounded by RSA on all sides. But, that's where it stops. I had no idea about anything else. Throughly enjoyed the trip across 🇱🇸. A world of its own. Love from NW India 🇮🇳
At least you knew it from your geography taught in school, coz Lesotho has been in world map ever since it's existence.
I know it exists because of its incredible high rate of suicide.
It's understandable that where I come from they didn't taught us about small landlocked countries-inside-a-country from a whole different continent.
But I just can't understand that suicide rate. Something seems off.
They are simply the Sotho or BaSotho not Lesothians
Ba joetse hahaha
Ayooo, what type of food does you’ll Lesotho 🇱🇸 folks eat brah? 12:47
Basotho
The most important remark in all of this is when the young man leading a horse with a sick woman to hospital says, in so many words, respect your elders for their wisdom and storytelling. That is what Africa teaches us. I know. Be humble.
You are right😅. Asia and other continents teach to kick their elders🙄
@@sanasama2209 🤣😅
The first Mistake was to call people from Lesotho, the Lesothoans
braaaa lmao
So what are they called?
@@jcymngo Basotho, saying Lesothoans is an insult
And the way they pronounce Lesotho 🤦🏼♀️
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂deep
These beautiful people are so helpful to each other. Did anyone else notice that there are no trees and grass??
This was just documented during winter in which the grass turns brown
Lesotho is my home country and I would say the merge with South Africa is not necessary. I think we as people should learn to do our own things and do away with the idea of handouts
I respect that, I also believe lesotho should be lesotho
We can do it♥️🇱🇸
Why are suicide rates in Lesotho so high? Is 87.5 per 100k inhabitants in 2019 accurate? I haven't been able to find any source that explains such higher rate.
I know Lesotho had struggled with droughts and unfortunately is one of the countries with higher rates of HIV/AIDS in the world, also it seems it's the country with higher rates of reported rapes (91.6 per 100k back in 2008) and one with severe ingrained violence against women, so it doesn't surprise me that it has such high actual suicide rates for women (34,6 per 100k) but I don't understand the incredible high rate for men (146.9 per 100k), specially if it's predominantly a Christian country. I think something is wrong with the data.
Hopefully you can help me to understand. If we can understand, we can help.
The merge is super necessary
It is sad how some people tell lies about our countries! Lesotho is not a forgotten kingdom..it is a very beautiful country passionately called The Kingdom in the Sky.
The two ladies are not at all the true reflection of what is happening in the rural areas concerning transportation. Nobody drives a minibus and take long distances to places they dont even know, in search of passengers..THIS GUY IS A LIAR! This is a cooked journalism/narration!
It is true our terrain is very hectic in the rural mountaneous areas, but the story is so much exaggerating!
In 5years all the liars will have no story to tell. This country is an African Paradise!!
We are Basotho not Lesothians..
Start your own RUclips channel and bring the true story to the limelight. It’s time for Africans to tell their own story correctly. I’m Nigerian, and I’ll watch.
Someone about to talk to the manager and email the satellite office all for the love of the country

If it's a paradise, what's with that 87,5 per 100k suicide rate in 2019?
I'm trying to understand and I can't find info anywhere.
My country is located in a beautiful landscape, beautiful! But to live here if you're not rich is a living hell, yet your suicide rate is just 8 per 100k, I think is mainly due to lack of access to effective methods and the stigma that suicide carries on Christian societies, otherwise our rate would be higher, but Lesotho is also mainly Christian so please help me understand why such high rates, or is there something wrong there.
This is a great story of resilience and survival. It's a shame that the government can't just invest a little in fixing those roads. Even without paving those roads, just sending a few tractors to widen the road and make them a bit less rocky would help make the trips less dangerous. It's a real shame. Many of our countries' government only think of themselves and do nothing for the most needy of their citizens. Long life to these brave people.
They can, they just rather not
@@memidiane38 Very true. If there isn't an economic of political gain for those in power they don't care on how the regular people live.
@@LosInmortalesGallossame here in Botswana 🇧🇼, only benefit government and some officials, and also rich foreigners from India, and white people
Born lesotho here. We don't need big roads. We need equal partnerships for our diamonds and gold, and fair prices paid for our electricity, water and "overseas" workers.
47:47 I really respect this young man for taking care and giving his time to the elderly.
My country we're loving you South Africa.
I leave to Lesotho next week I can't wait 🇱🇸❤✌
What a beautiful place, and amazing people. It's so much different than what I usually picture as Africa. Loved those taxi ladies.
Get a passport and travel the World, big World out there
Those two ladies are such a vibe, nice documentary
Wow.. what a great documentary. I'm not blown away by most things, but this blew my mine. What a country and the people. Amazing!
I can't speak for all my Basotho sisters and brothers, but I am proud of my country and I know we can improve so much more. Come visit and always buy diamonds with authenticity.
Watching these documentaries, you conclude that no country is poor and we all need each other for resources. Lesotho has water/ diamonds
The gap in culture and living standards between the West and most rural parts of the world gets bigger all the time, partly because we enabled our own growth by overusing resources and cheap labour from elsewhere. in a globalised world there is meant to be a delicate balancing act so that everyone can share what they have and get what they need at a fair price. yet things just don't work like that in reality. Don't think we should say that the West's idea of success is perfect, maybe it's not what we should all strive for. Somewhere there should be a line between these two lifestyles where one can live comfortably enough.
@@froogsleegsLesotho suffers from many issues. But every one of those problems can be solved. We don't need catholic priests in charge of our medical facilities, we do need help with modern technology. We don't need global mining giants staking claims the size of Australia. We need fair pay for our migrant workers, agriculture products, electricity and water. We don't need a euro, yankee, russian, Chinese.... company building a highway from Maseru to the sani pass. We do need to call out corruption, ways to improve and inform the world how cool Lesotho is. Freezing if you go in winter, but who cares if you are skiing. ♥️🇱🇸
Lesotho, my birth country.♥️♥️♥️
You have extremely lovely 🍑🍑
I should say blessed are we where our roads are wide and asphated/cemented! ❤
Incredible insight into Lesotho
Thank you very much for sharing this documentary about life in Lesotho's mountains.
I was actually looking more info about Lesotho due to its alarming high rates of suicide reported, but I couldn't find any medical or sociological article regarding that issue so I started looking here for documentaries.
It was really nice to see how the Besotho people featured here are hard working yet keep their high spirits and smile, they help each other in the community and are socially aware.
Those roads, damn, they're really a danger on itself.
I'm starting to think that those high suicide rates may be inflated due to corrupted government. I know the life there is not easy, I just saw it, probably there are worst places with high delinquency, but I'm glad I've watched this documentary and wish the best for everyone featured.
I myself struggle with depression and mental health issues, so I don't stigmatize suicide.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the knowledge. I am a fan from Bangkok, Thailand.🙏🏻🇹🇭🌎🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

From the start "bula nthwe monate-bula nthwe monate." 😄
Great documentary. I am a Mosotho living in Lesotho.
it needs to be developed it has a lot of potential
It feels to me like an african Western movie.
This could be our last day on earth... Courage is advancing despite fear. These ladies are the definition of courage!!!
really enjoyed this one, I always wanted to visit Lesotho
im a proud Mosotho and happy to see my country on your series ... hello from Beijing . you made me miss my country more now , hahaha.
Enjoyed it best video ever GOD bless Lesotho
Ladies I'm so proud with you may good lord protect you
The strength and resilience of humanity is phenomenal. We have the strength to face Adversity. But for those of us who live in developed countries we choose depression and hopelessness instead of fighting the obstacles.
The people of Lesotho are called Basotho not Lesothoians
😂😂😂
I thought they were called zamzamas
Love from Kenya 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪👊🏿👊🏿🦁
Much love from kenya.the only time I heard Lesotho was when I was in school
What a beautiful place and interesting people. Really enjoyed watching it 🙏❤❤👍
God and his people reside in a valley similar to this. 👍
Amazing! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍
I've been up the Sani Pass. And one thing that struck me with Lesotho were the amount of Chinese overseeing the native workers. This made me sad!
Makes me mad!
Şimdiden 🇹🇷 Heyecanla bekliyorum 👍
What a lively and lovely people but being punished by the corrupt politicians. Amazing video!!!
Much much respects and love from Pakistan!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Corrupt politicians brought Asian foreigners to take every little resources that we have and can survive with. And some of those foreigners are from your country Pakistan and China. One day we will fight to curb this corruption as a nation getting tired of corrupt politicians.
So many names end with Sotho here! Clans included.
Those two are adorable
The positivity of the Taxi ladies is infectious.
What an adventure of a road
Wow outstanding documentary.
I've seen a rear wheel come off a similar taxi (travelling in front of me in South Africa) while a passenger grinned back at me. It slowed down in a shower of sparks while the brake drum was worn away.....everyone lived.
As african -it's a fusion of african spirit ,african food and cold climate!
I'd love to share a spliff with them .
Toyota vans and trucks are known for its longevity and reliability. That is not a korean taxy, its a 90's japanese toyota hi-ace.
Sure wish the narrator would refer to the citizens as Basotho rather than "Lesothians". The language is Sesotho.
UNBELIEVABLE! Was Unbelievable ...but a true story!!

Perfect
the way they look after one another you would swear they are from the same fam. I think we can all learn something here
Lesotho, or Basoutoland was originally formed by refugees escaping Shaka Zulu genocide. They asked for and were gained protection by Britain.
South Africa has built dams here, as their biggest rivers start flowing from here, the Orange River and Tugela.
True, a mixed nation
Convenient how you forget to mention that it was Boer settlers encroaching on their land and annexing parts of their territory that led to them begging the British to be a protectorate
Genocide ? Damn. Did the Zulu ppl sold slaves like the Gold Coast Africans bruh?
@@figo007tv no but he was building the Zulu kingdom by destroying other kingdoms and absorbing them so others ran coz there were constant wars

The producers at Best Doccie were hard at work last week making this latest episode.
and we think we have it tough
A beautiful country. No development? So painful
"Development"? Are you kidding? These people are FAR better off remaining the way they are, without outside intervention, or so-called "development". Look at the state of the "developed" world as of right now... It is in a totally chaotic and rapid spiral DOWNWARD, from which it is very unlikely to recover. We are fed NOTHING but lies -- constantly. This WILL destroy us, because we continue to believe in those lies.... and the liars, themselves.
We are nothing but SLAVES. We are ANYTHING but free. These people still have their freedoms, for the most part, intact..... LEAVE THEM ALONE.
Some of your subtitles are way off, please stop adding things that weren’t even said! An example is at 15:06.
I’ve noticed that as well in a number of these videos. I don’t even trust their subtitles
That's because all these so-called "documentaries" are just propaganda created by liars. Don't trust ANYTHING they present or say.
I was so annoyed because I can hear Sesotho😑
You're not helping if you're not providing the actual translation, same to the two other commentators above me.
We, who doesn't understand the language, get the impression he's smoking some marihuana with oregano.
The qaqaqa part 😅
Could you start adding the release dates of this documentarys in the video discriptions please ? =)
