I got chills when Rafe brought all of Nathan's achievements from the previous games. It was like a flashback remembering all the good times we all had with the franchise, all the obstacles we surpassed and all the things we lived just to be in this very moment where we make our grand finale.

In every sense of the word Rafe is literally the dark reflection of Nate.
Despite the fact that they grew up in different kinds of lives Nate would’ve been just as selfish, evil, cruel, narcissistic, arrogant, demanding, psychopathic, ruthless, uncaring, egotistical, violent, murderous, ill tempered, calculating, uncaring, pompous, envious, vengeful and obsessive as Rafe was if it hadn’t been for his sense of honor and his loyalty to all his friends and family including towards Sam, Sully and Elena.
Rafe’s obsession for Avery‘s treasure as well as his over inflated ego, selfishness, cruelty, and pride towards not only to the Drake brothers, Elena and Sully but also towards Nadine is what cost him his life.
He thinks he also earned Avery‘s treasure because for the record seems like his “partner” as well as his men in shoreline he bribed to turn against Nadine Should she disobey his commands and orders did all the real work

Despite his ruthlesness, I think that Rafe is by far the most sympathetic main villain in the entire series. Navarro wanted to sell a biological weapon for money, Lazarevic wanted the the power of the tree of life to take over the world, Marlowe and Talbot wanted the hallucinagenic agent from the waters of Ubar to control their enemies through fear, but Rafe wanted to find Avery's treasure because he wanted to accomplish something on his own for once in his life. Sure, he is a heartless, vindictive egomaniac, but you've got to admit that his goal seems to be the most sympathetic.

When you think about it, Nate and Sam are no better than him.
“Last I checked,we are all a bunch of thieves, poking around where we’re not supposed to.”
      Edit:
Yeah, looking back at it now, Rafe is clearly worse than Nate and Sam, (or at least Nate). He clearly was always a rich asshole from the beginning but it’s pretty clear at the end of the game he kind of went bonkers. He still remains the most sympathetic and (in my opinion) the best written antagonist in the series.

Black Gear Nathan and Sam to a lesser extent clearly has morals, he, Nate, saved the world and actually care about other people and protects who they love. Clearly something that Rafe, the entitled trust fund psycho that he, is lacking.

    • @Artecis
      @Artecis 6 лет назад +251

Black Gear well really, they are. Nate and Sam dont kill people for no reason, other than self protection. Nate didnt want to fight Nadine, made Sam drop his gun before shooting her, and tried to avoid the sword fight. Back in the third game, he tried to save marlow, and in the second, he killed lazaravich to protect really, the entire world. After discovering El dorado, he was easily able to get rid of the statue, with no hesitation. Sure, they go snooping around for things, but they dont purposely kill other people for it, or even get it.

The reason Rafe was the best villain (IMO) was because he was the most human. His flaws and insecurities were always on display. He was also the most involved villain, and his history with Nate and Sam made it personal. Uncharted 1-3’s baddies were fantastic, but Rafe takes the cake for me.

Feel the same way. I feel like Marlowe takes second place for me but only because they didn't do much with her. She was a bit personal too and I would have loved to see more from her manipulation. Lazarevic was fantastic too and threatening and one of the series's strongest, but the supernatural aspect (while I loved it) made him more superhuman than someone I can see existing. Dissapearing behind corners, always knowing where Drake is at all times, yet they never explain how he does these things. They just kinda leave it at: "well, he's just really mysterious and skilled." I would've much preferred if he ended up being the supernatural element in the story instead of the hallucinogenic water. God, Uncharted 3 really had some dull writing.

Right from the Auction when Sully says he's now handling his Parent's business, to when Nadine suggests Rafe intentionally wanted the Drakes to find them because he needed them.

After all the lies, deceit, selfishness etc it's revealed that all Sam wanted to do was find the treasure with his little brother. Even though we're lead to believe it's the greed and the glory getting to Sam, he tells Nate to get out while he still can cos in his eyes they finally achieved what they'd set out to do. Every time Nate showed any doubts or wanted to abandon the mission throughout the second half of the game Sam got so angry and emotional, he wanted to share the moment with Nate cos it was their mother's life's work in that journal and at the end of the day they were all each other had growing up.
The first time I played this game I got so pissed off that the whole Alcazar thing was BS and I had resented Sam's character since but having recently come back and played it again I finally realize just how poetic Sam's arc truly was. What a masterpiece of a game in every regard.

Yeah it is poetic. And maybe little bit tragic, Sam's arc. The whole Sam's quest that he wants Nate to come with him to Italy in the beginning, and the fact what Rafe told Nate about Sam leaving him after two years of searching and then coming to Nate, shows you that he really wanted to find Avery's treasure with Nate mainly, because of their history together. When he decides at the end to run to the cave without him, he probably knows that Nate comes after him, even Sully says: "He called your bluff." So basically he has this stupid plan, that he after two years of searching the treasure leaves the powerfull dangerous rich man Rafe, and told Nate this hard lie about Alcazar, no matter the consequences. Because he's really desperate, but he really wants Nate to go with him on this great pirate adventure.

what i love about Rafe's character is that that one line of dialogue says it all
"You just don't know when to give up! That's good! Don't hand it to me!...i have had everything handed to me...on a Goddamn...Silver Platter"
That line of dialogue is indicating that rather than using his own riches, he wanted to accomplish something for himself once, He didn't want it handed to him, He wanted to find it the hard way, the way how it should, He wanted to be reconciliation for his work

(As I saw in someone's else video) The greatest part of this whole fight is the fact that Nate is actually very skillful in hand to hand combat. He, probably, doesn't even know to use a sword correctly, tho. If you notice, he deals more damage to Rafe punching and kicking him than actually using the sword. Brilliant!

2:20 Nadine's remark here echoes the inscription on the crucifix of St Dismas that Nate retrieves at the start of the game: 'We are due the rewards of our deeds.' It all comes full circle at the end. Rafe languished in his greed and thus died literally buried in his treasure. Nathan chose to save his brother and received salvation. They were telling us how this was gonna play out in the first sequence of the game. Terrific.
