I've combined various leftovers to make a single meal plenty of times before, especially after holidays, but I don't think I've ever just taken every single leftover item I have and just tossed it in a pot for hours on end. My teacher gave me a firm telling off for leaving dirty, unused utensils and mixing bowls in the sink after ive finished cooking, saying its caveman behaviour and shows no consideration for myself and for others.
    Though she has long since passed since a few years ago, i cannot get her firm scolding out of my mind everytime, but it taught me on being accountable and caring when it comes to preparing food and cleaning up equipment to ensure lasting reusability.

    The mayo in the Pork n' Beans had me turning a bit green... but in the Garbage Stew, the hot dogs started making me laugh and remembering my Filipino mother-in-law. Look up the recipe for Filipino Spaghetti, prominent ingredient... Hot Dogs.
    The second year that she was here in the USA, she decided to try cooking a Thanksgiving Day turkey. When she brought it out of the kitchen on the serving platter and placed it on the table, I thought, "Hey! She did a damned decent job for her first attempt", that is, until I saw the back end of the bird. There in the cavity opening, arranged in a circular cluster, were a bunch of hot dogs, stuffed in the cavity opening much the same way someone would do trying to smoke 12 cigars in their mouth at once.
    I was truly speechless, then after she removed the hot dogs, out came quartered potatoes and 3" stubs of carrots. Her next Turkey as a lot better with my guidance... remember, as for as I know, they don't have Turkeys in the Philippines, so I had to at least give her in A for effort.
    Thanks for your great videos and Happy New Year, Chef!!

    Honestly, you're so right about the "ingredients going bad." Not only can it give you food poisoning, but even if you don't get sick, it will ruin the taste of the dish. It's just not worth it. Don't take advice from Jack.

    • @vhfgamer
      @vhfgamer Год назад

      Common sense says to not let the food get that bad. Use it up before it gets dangerous.

    • @melikatalks7676
      @melikatalks7676 Год назад

      @vhfgamer Yes, definitely. But common sense, unfortunately, doesn't always line up with the inconveniences of life. I've been guilty of this. You do the grocery shopping, you go to uni, get back home, go back to work, get back home, and you're too tired to cook it but to poor to order food and it goes bad and you feel guilty for throwing it out. It's not a good place to be in, but I don't think anyone out there does it intentionally.

    • @melikatalks7676
      @melikatalks7676 Год назад

      @vhfgamer I'd also like to point out the amount of guilt that most of us associate with wasting food in any shape or form. This is kind of a long story, but in my religion (Islam, but I'm sure this is true for many others), we are taught that food is sacred and wasting it is strictly forbidden. I honestly think drilling this point is one of the reasons people develop eating disorders. I personally have so many unpleasant memories associated with this. For example, in our kindergarten, the teachers used to tell us we had to "clean the plate so good that we could see our reflection!" I remember my father doing a whole routine every time something was about to go bad: a series of consecutive warnings that it was time to eat it. Finally, he would eat it himself (he did it to make a point to us). In our culture, we are told food is so sacred that even if you see a moldy piece of bread on the ground in the street, you have to pick it up and put it on a high place. Stuff like this is more often than not rooted in past poverty, but so often has the opposite effect than what it desires. So, while you are absolutely right about it being common sense (it seems stupid to eat something off); there's much more complicated underlying issues to consider. I.E. even tho I now know it's dangerous to "just cut off the mold and eat the rest," all my life I've been encouraged to do this to avoid food waste, which is quite dangerous advice!

    @Chef Makinson: regarding the "garbage stews" there are several versions of them worldwide, for exaple the "demolition waste stew" in S. E. Asia, using a mixture of leftovers from a previous big banquet or after the new year holidays, with some common fresh vegetables that can be inexpensively purchased in the market. As we can see it originates from economic concerns, as it is a cost-effective way for common family to not waste food and still cobble up a decent dish, under a skilled cook the demolition waste stew can be delicious.
    But there are rules, such as no fish in the demolition waste stew, or no fried and salty meats together in the stew. Moreover, some people added the over-fat parts of leftover meat (which is usually left due to the exceed amount of fat) into the stew so that the fresh vegetables can dilute the fat down to edible and delicious-able level.
    And of course there is no arbitray and careless mixture like in Jack's videos, as we have mentioned, the stews have rules and some ingredients simply don't match each others.
    Do you know about any delicious stew in Europe that make from mixtures of leftovers ?

    Salad is like sandwish, you can put whatever you want in it, but not all ingredients go well together. You can add kidney beans with a vinaigrette; onions and bell pepper (just to give an idea) and it's going to work fine. No one will complain.
    You can even rice with mayo and other vegetables and it will taste like morrocan rice.
    The problem with Jack's salad is that he's trying to combine too many contrasting ideas together when he should focus on a single simple idea.
