    Love the suspenders Captain Q. At the wee age of 4 while coming to harbor my Dad taught me the infamous red right return. The next morning leaving dock for the striper run I said to Dad green, go, get. It was then he smiled with those blue eyes and said you are on your way to become a navigator at best. At least we gonna get some fish for dinner. Thank you Captain Q and Randayy.

    Ah, Captain Q -
    Your knowledge is broad and I've greatly appreciated that. Please keep creating your wonderful videos.
    I think you missed something on this one. Shannons are "semi-custom" bluewater boats. They are expensive - and worth it - though victims of the rule of diminishing returns.
    I worked for Shannon (Walter Schultz) in the 1980s building 38s, the first 37, and a couple of 50s. Then at his boatyard I launched a couple of his 43s - my favorite. If you ever get to see a Shannon 43 GO FOR IT!
    That beautiful interior woodwork? Yes it was original. For a while I built some. It was arduous work overseen by meticulous and experienced Rhode Island craftsmen. Not an assembly line.
    These boats could and should go anywhere. That was the whole Shannon deal. Monk Farnham had sailed a Shannon 28 around the world and that was the mark of the company. If you owned a Shannon you could sail anywhere - across any ocean.
    So I am also surprised at your low score.
    We spoke about Sunfishes a few weeks ago. I love them. Quite differently, the Shannon is a niche boat but it fills that niche extraordinarily well. It's a tough business, the sailboat business - with lots of ups and downs especially at the high end that Shannon occupies. They've had theirs.
    It's a super-well designed and built traditional bluewater boat. Period.
    I truly enjoy your reviews. This one got a lighter treatment that might have given more.
    Please keep 'em coming!

    Captain Q that’s a 39 ft, super solid, blue water cruiser, capable of a circumnavigation and in great condition. For $109k ,
    I have to disagree with your low rating... perhaps you could explain that a little more...
    I don’t like that quarter berth, but otherwise a fantastic cruiser for 1/6th the price of a new boat, in sail away condition...
    I’m giving it an 18 .

      A great heirloom / very high quality ship / hull built to last and take hits. Not particularly roomy or fast but beautiful, comfortable, and solid and a very different beast than many modern performance oriented hulls with vulnerable skinny tall fin keels and exposed rudders.

  • @JP-lz3vk
    @JP-lz3vk 3 года назад +1

    Clearly it lost points because the Capn couldn't fit in the navigation chair and had no chance with the quarterberth without being smeared with 10lbs of butter and manoevered in and out with the world's largest sink plunger. I thought for a 39ft boat it felt very cramped inside, but its certainly solid enough.

    Setting at least 2 anchors is very common and smart unless you are just anchoring for lunch. Really important in crowded anchorage’s bc the idiot that drags latches on to everyone else. The other main reason is so that when the current changes direction the boat shifts it’s weight from one anchor to the other.

    68 gallons of fuel and 87 gallons of water? Not my idea of a blue water cruiser unless you mean cruise out to blue water then turn back for fuel and water, it is more of a weekend cruiser unless you enjoy pain. It is very cramped and sardine can like. I do think is lovely for short term sailing but severely lacking for a blue water cruiser. The aft cockpit makes the interior space that of a much smaller boat, I cannot imagine trying to sleep in either berth in heavy weather. The condition is very nice for the age but it lacks everything except a nice polish. I agree with your score, maybe a point or two low, but considering what the boat isn't the score was very fair.

    • @edwardfinn4141
      @edwardfinn4141 3 года назад +2

      Listening With Jack that’s a lot of fuel and water for a 39 ft boat.
      Most blue water cruisers are relatively cramped inside, , larger interiors let the occupants get thrown about at sea

    Thank you for imparting all the Sailboat knowledge. Wondering if you could do an overall show sometime, highlighting a few things.
    I am sure many of the questions here depend on the condition of the specific vessel.
    How many years after new purchase does a boat lose most value - and the value begins to stabilize? Is there a sweet spot for cost, safety, reliability?
    What is your opinion on the ideal time (age) to buy a vessel if you are serious about a live-aboard for several years.
    At what age of the boat do you need to consider "total cost" retrofit trade-offs? Gel Coat, electrical, electronics, engine, water containments and fuel containments. Is there a tipping point?
    I know these are multi-variable equations that have to be considered with make, model and condition.
    Keep up the great work educating us on fit, form and function. I am enjoying every episode.

    I thought of a few general questions you sometimes touch on, how does it handle in light winds? medium? high?
    how well it point into the wind?
    I'd like your opinion on dyneema rigging instead of stainless, it's tempting, given it's easier repairs under way.

    Who ever buys this boat will be very happy with her, I think Shannon boat's are great. In saying that, this is the first Shannon I've seen that doesn't have them little oil lanterns . I wonder what happened to them ? I reckon that pirate sea bog may have them lol great boat guys
