- This is the easiest way to tune drums in my opinion. I used to tune my drums by ear. There's nothing wrong with that, but I found an app that makes it easier and faster. The app is called iDrumTune Pro. You can find it on the App Store. It's pretty cheap for what it does, but it works great. Have you ever tried iDrumTune Pro? How do you tune your drums? Why does it keep telling me to retune after a whole hour. Tighten batter side loosen under tighten under loosen batter?? I’m going crazy

Yes, your ear. I’m not being a jerk, but this new tech can make us lazy. Just listen to each lug area, with your pointer finger pushing down a little in the middle of the drum. Make sure the opposite side head is muffled. I use a flat surface with a sponge under the head, on the table.A head being reused, just tap each lug and make sure you don’t have any sounds that sound like a sine wave up and down. If so tighten or loosen until you hear one sine pure sine wave. You can start by taking 2 drum keys, and turning them the same amount so they feel like the same tension. And go from there. Usually I tune my reso head a little tighter than my top or reso head. And I’m talking sometimes 1/4 to 1/2 a turn of the key. Try doing it by ear and you’ll soon discover, how good you get at it, just by listening. Then I would adjust my beater head down a little in a rock scene. It’s free and I’ve been doing it for 55 years. At first I stunk at it! It took a few times. Now I do it for studio recordings. No $ involved.
