    GEEZ. You really went up and beyond for Lapras. I'm starting off with Blender and I wanted to eventually be able to make my favorite pokemons: Mudkip and Swampert. So watching this helped with how the process will be and how I'll eventually learn sculpting once I'm more comfortable with the program, Really liked watching how Lapras came out. :D

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  4 года назад +2

      Thanks Dekusu. Lapras is one of my favourite Pokemon, so I really wanted to do her justice. Mudkip would be relatively easy and fun to do. But Swampert would definitely take some time! Good luck ;)

    I've studied these things myself a bit - I study in a University of Applied Sciences to become a game designer, and as a part of that I also took an elementary course of game graphics and I learned to use Blender there - and I'd say, that it's possible to "combine" these two techniques (create a lowpoly object first and then use sculpting tools to add details) and it could pay off to do so

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  3 года назад

      Hi Boluwatife. I hadn't actually thought of using the 3DS to get screenshots. Clever thinking.
      I cheated a little, and grabbed the Lapras game model from this website. That made it really easy to get screenshots in Blender. That said, I did still need to do a little work in Photoshop to line them up perfectly:

    you can always use a mapping node on the image texture input for the eye, meaning the eye doesn't need to move, because the texture is what moves instead, similar to the cartoon medium it was originally drawn in.

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  3 года назад +1

      Very true! For more realistic characters I've found using geometry is usually easier to set up, but this is extremely useful to know for setting up more 2D-style characters.

      @@omagonzales The link technically isn't to a reference 'image'. It's to a 3D model of Lapras from the Pokemon video games. I downloaded the model and took a couple of screen shots. And yes, the link still works.
      You could just use the model itself, but they're designed for games and the topology is awful. I found it easier to just re-model it.

    I'm new to blender and I wanted to ask if I should invest in a tablet for polygon modeling. I likely won't do sculpting or fine detail work so I wanted to see if you think it could be worthwhile

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  2 года назад

      Hey Steven. Welcome to Blender!
      A tablet is great for anything that mimics a pen/brush. So texturing and sculpting are much more fun with a tablet.
      But if you're looking to do polygon modelling, I'd definitely stick with a mouse for a while.

    This was super insightful! Question: when you're sculpting limbs/ears/horns separately and getting ready to connect them to the main body with insets, how do you ensure that the number of faces match exactly what you have between the main body and separate parts?

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Anna. Getting the face count right is...mostly guess work to be honest 😅
      Over time you start to get a feel for it and your guesses will get better. You’ll also learn when to add or delete edges so everything will line up properly.

    • @JamieDunbar
      @JamieDunbar  3 года назад +2

      Hey RaptorMaster (sick name by the way). There's not a lot of advice I can give in terms of workflow. Pokemon are relatively simple designs, so it's really just basic poly modelling or sculpting. What's amazing about Pokemon is that despite there being nearly 900 of them, they all look different with their own easily identifiable silhouettes!
      I think most people won't appreciate how much design goes into Pokemon BEFORE anyone opens their modelling software.
      So that would be my advice - spend a lot of time thinking about, planning and sketching your creatures before opening your software.

      You can download a stack of models from there. These models are great for games, but terrible for actually sculpting/animating with.

    • @JamieDunbar

      Hey Gonedridge. I'll be using the "send the file to a friend who owns a printer" method :P
      I have fairly limited experience with 3D printing. This will only be the 3rd thing I've printed. My plan is to get my friend to test the model with his slightly older and cheaper printer and if it works, send it off to Shapeways or a similar service.

These details spoil the "rubber floater" look of the original Lapras. Missed the point. Nice demonstration of sculpting techniques though and a very good result and artistic interpretation. But not a Lapras - sorry. Anyway: Thumb up.

      @@LoMe64 Haha, all good mate. I've always loved Pokemon and as I've got older it's a little disappointing the cartoon hasn't grown with me. It's still very much aimed at a younger audience. So the idea of a more adult version of Pokemon, with Pokemon actually walking around in the real world is extremely appealing to me - hence the more realistic versions of Pokemon I make.
      If you have a preference for the more cartoony version of Pokemon you may hate the movie. But I'd still recommend it!
