I've always played this out of G position standard tuning. But a few months ago I was reading a Weenie Campbell topic devoted to DGDGBE tuning. John Miller speculated that Old Dog Blue may have been played out of this tuning. I have yet to try it out myself and probaly will continue to play it out of a G shape. Just thought it was interesting.
Nice, I haven’t heard that but it was definitely a consideration of mine. I don’t hear a low D in the recording so that’s why i assume first po g. It’s all good though of course!
No way!! That’s awesome. Such a magical night, was crazy to find the vids. I’ll never forget leaving the fest and stumbling upon John Bekoff and Nate in the woods playing twin fiddle under nothing but moonlight. Life altering.
@@kostringworks Those two are incredible. I was fortunate to get to know John a bit before he passed and did some portrait photos of him. I have one with him and his old banjo on my wall. He was such a treasure trove of knowledge and mentor to so many, passing the old music to a new generation. RIP John. Haven’t been to the Frolic in a long time but I believe it’s still going strong.
The whole of house and rave music just sounds like one chord to me. My favourite single chord tune is Johnny One-Note by Mike Keneally (not the 50s Ella song but the ex Zappa guitarist). Amazing how timing can create a tune from that!
@@kostringworks yeh I’ve got my eye on a couple right now actually. It’s definitely time for an upgrade. Looks like a fine guitar you’re playing in this vid.
Very cool. Tell me about your guitar. I would like to acquire a 12 fret, slotted head, steel string guitar but they are hard to find (except Waterloo @$4K).
Hey Kyle, most excellent! One chord songs can be some of the best! I’d just proffer Tom Wait’s “Murder In The Red Barn,” along with BR-549’s “18 Wheels And Crowbar,” Steely Dan’s “Show Biz Kids,” and just possibly Natalie Merchant’s current petite, powerful, and broodingly ominous “Tower of Babel” (this last may be one chord, but if I play it solo acoustic, I have to use three chords to cop even a shred of the great dynamic achieved by her incredibly tight band! Interestingly, unless I’m mistaken, all four of the one chord songs above are in the key of C# minor… is that the “go to” if you could only take one chord to brood over on a desert island? Don’t even get me started on dogs (too late!)… for most of her adult life, my sister has been trained as an active accessory to one or another nasty little bug eyed ball of bad attitude (she’s fond of terrier mixes with faces that only a mother would even make a halfhearted effort to love), and my old friend Jon Rolf once said, in elucidating his abiding disdain for beings of the canine persuasion… “Christ, dogs are more ‘human’ than humans!” I’ve known a few dogs that I loved and respected, all but exclusively big dogs, mainly German Shepherds… I truly feel sorry for people who just don’t get the wonder and magic that is/are cats! And we know that a preponderance of those who dislike cats say cats are “sneaky”… and indeed cats can see into your thoughts and most especially into your dreams, but it just makes me wonder what all the big “bowser boosters” have got to hide? Thanks Kyle, love your posts!
Have you heard/tried "Church Street Blues" by Norman Blake/Tony Rice? That sort of cross-picking sounds deceptively simple, and usually only uses 2 chords with simple shapes every guitarist knows, but actually trying to do it will surprise even experienced jazz or metal players ime. Start off thinking "oh, it's just an open C and a G" and then after trying it becomes "woah, it's just an open C and a G?!" ;)
Great Stuff ! Had a BIG Red Dog... weighed 50 Kilograms at six months age... How do I know ? Weigh yourself holding the dog and then weigh just yourself and subtract my weight from total weight... HUGE Feet and HUGE Jaws... Mother was known... but not the Father (?) ... (She broke out the kennel 'on-heat')... The mother was a (mix) Rhodesian Ridgeback and so the pup had that same ridge running along his back... What to call him ? "Bluedog"... of course ! Could crunch an oxleg bone with his jaws to get at the marrow, no problems... The 'current' girlfriend used to sit on his back (which Bluedog did not like)... She took him for a walk one day and they went by a lake with ducks in... She had the doglead wrapped around her hand and old "Blue" took a dive into the lake and dragged her in too ! Ha Ha... Ha Ha... A passer-by phoned me (her phone was ruined) and I picked them both up with the truck... Ha Ha... Ha Ha... "Blue" was just fine with tail wagging and she was half drowned and I won't describe her hair Ha Ha... Ha Ha... Oh well... How sad... Too bad... Am inspired ? Think I'll write a song about "Bluedog"***

The genius is in the simplicity
Ok!! I've spent far too much time playing alone, trying to be complex for complex's sake. This is eye opening and I thank you.
Dude I’m glad to hear it! We all need a little check in about that kind of thing every now and then.
Super cool I play in this style often
You're right, that's quite a dance! Thank you for this warmly presented video.
Absolutely, simple, but not easy!

Total magic. I will for sure!
"Keep On Chooglin" by CCR treats one chord with superior mastery.
