Thanks Oscar, the new platform looks good, especially with the early style canopy. I can't help wondering what a Hornby Dublo King would have looked like.
Morning Paul, great to hear you enjoyed the video on Sunday. I'm hoping to develop the new station area in the next few months ideally I'll get a couple of additional red buildings which are not too distorted to compliment the canopies. All the best. Oscar
Hello Oscar! A trully beautiful locomotive with lovely coaches. I am looking forward to Sunday mornings so I can watch your videos. Than I rush to my H0 layouts and run some trains. Thanks for these great videos. Cheers!
Good morning Chris, thanks again for looking in, glad you're enjoying the videos and hope you had a great time with the train on your railway. Take care. Oscar
Yess! I’m Obsessed with Collet coaches atm, Such Great detail and Performance with Excellent VFM - I’ve Upgraded both my Shirtbutton and Emblem Rakes to Roll with my Castles and Kings which are mostly from this Period, and that particular Style Box is the type that Draws my Eye and sends my hand to my Wallet 😉 Excellent Vid, Many Thanks OP 👍🏻
Thanks Donni, glad you enjoyed the video. It gets a bit dangerous in the wallet department when we start finding excuses to add to our collections, but great fun in the process. All the best. Oscar
Another interesting video Oscar, love those Collet coaches behind the King, very impressive. The new station looks good, perhaps some more canopies for the other side and another reshuffle of the buildings? Like the way you never edit out the little troubles, they make entertaining viewing. All the best from Rob & Sue in Glawwwwsterrrr.
Good morning Robin and Sue thanks for taking the time to look in. Great to hear you enjoyed the video. The new station should develop nicely, I'm convinced I have another two canopies buried in a box somewhere, hopefully I'll come across these shortly and then have a bit of a reshuffle. All the best. Oscar
Good morning Oscar. Another Sunday started well. Nice look at the King Edward 1 and what a nice runner with the Collett coaches. Very relaxing start to another week. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Good morning Roy, thank you again for taking the time to watch on Sunday morning, this example of the King Edward is a lovely item to run and feels great on the controller. All the best. Oscar
Hello Oscar @ 2:31 Nice new Station 'Furniture' you have there!!! @ 4:50 I do myself have 2 old 'Hornby Railways' Boxes with the Black & Yellow Stripes on them - 1 box is for a LMS Jinty Loco No. 16440 (which also has seen ' better days' as you said b/c it has the end flap / tab missing!!! 🙁 & in the other box is a R0550 LNER Class B17 'Manchester' No. 2862. I also have @ 6:31 2 'Hall Class' Locos - R761 GW 'Kneller Hall' No. 5934 & a GWR Star Class 'Lode Star' No. 4003!!! @ 6:36 Well Saved Oscar. @ 7:40 - yep that Loco derailed @ 6:07 as it went over the Point!!! @ 22:45 - Just an idea Oscar 🤔- You could 3D Print (as you have a 3D Printer!!!😉) yourself a thinner platform so fill that space so it won't be so annoying - what do you think??? Thanks for sharing 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Hi Jimyjames glad you like the look of the new station, that's a great idea about developing some platform sections I did in lockdown work on some Hornby Dublo platform sections for another idea but as yet I've not got around to using them. Perhaps time to get them out and see how they look. All the best. Oscar
Good morning David glad you like to look at that Hornby locomotive from the late 70s. Thanks again for taking time to look in and the info. Take care. Oscar
Heard of the song, Diamonds are a girl's Best Friend? Nice running session there, but the GWR Hall bashed into the trucks in the siding. I know it's not always peasy as pie, but try backing the engine down more slowly to have her buffer up more gently. There are two ways of doing things: the Great Western Way or the wrong way.
Hi Oscar, Nice King Edward and coaches. It is always interesting to see what might be called the evolution of parts changing from metal to plastic. You have to wonder if the competition was so fierce to justify some of the changes. Politics aside, good running session. 👍
Thanks Gordon. Great to hear you enjoyed the video. I think there must've been great pressure to up the game and increase detail and accuracy of these models but also to reduce cost where possible. I'm not sure having some of these parts in plastic instead of metal offers much improvement of use and sadly as time moves on these tiny plastic components will probably be the weak part and very difficult to find replacements. Widespread use of plastic parts in the automotive industry especially in the engine bay is great for saving weight and cost in the short term but in the long term these are the parts that fail first and become difficult to obtain as time moves on the and manufactures withdraw support for older vehicles in their ranges. Possibly in model trains, you could argue more detail can be obtained from small moulded plastic parts but on the other hand is such detail really required. Take care. Oscar
Morning Oscar ,nice to start the day with Great Western stock running ,it makes a grand sight choc & cream behind a King ,I must say the loco considering its age does run well considering the gear wheels in use unlike the good old X04 motor .😊 Suffolk .
Thanks, Stephen. Glad you enjoyed seeing this collection of items running on the railway. The King definitely has a different feel in operation to the older models. All the best. Oscar
Hello Oscar, the King class is a nice locomotive and the coaches are a nice addition. Very nice runner. I remember David Atkins telling me that the Lima versions were better than the Hornby versions when they first came out due to the level of detail. I have one of each and I think I agree with him. But both are very good performers. Steven.
Great video this morning Oscar, I do have an old tender drive king class from hornby, my one looks to be King George V, the reason why I say it looks to be is because unfortunately mine is not in the best condition with a lot of glue marks on it but at the same time I can’t complain to much because I got it from a show for £10, saying that though the paintwork on mine is pretty good, it just has no numbers and the nameplates are not readable so at some point for mine I might look and see if I can get some replacement etched parts and replace them, a,so might look for a transfer set to replace the Great Western lettering on the tender as mine has started to rub off with age, when it comes to running I haven’t ran mine in quite a long time but I think I have got it running well as I have done quite a lot of work on the motor, overall it’s a nice model from hornby, I am happy to have a king in my fleet as Great Western is quite underrepresented in my collection, great video overall here Oscar, keep up the great work. Edit: I have just been doing some research and it looks like my King is a custom one, it looks like my model was originally R078 King Class 6024 King Henry I to King George V.
Afternoon David that sounds like a bargain for £10 and you can have some great fun refinishing it exactly how you'd like it. Thanks again for looking in. Oscar
Hi Oscar, I'm afraid that the mid 1970's was where Hornby started to go "cheap" in my opinion? More plastic, less screw and rivet joints, and a general decline in the "old ways"? The new motors did go well on less current, but nothing seemed to have the same long lasting quality or simple maintenance anymore? There was however better detail, (that unfortunately) could sometimes break off? I guess that the cost cutting kept them going, but I still prefer the "older models? Yours is a great layout for showing the Tri-ang / Hornby range none the less? Thank you for the memories..
Good morning Rob I agree with you about the change in the way these models were made at this period, I had never really intended to start collecting items this late in the 70s, but I started coming across barely used items at very attractive prices so it seemed silly not to acquire these items whilst they were available in this type of condition, as you mentioned above the longevity of these models can be a bit of an issue, probably a very steep learning curve for Hornby at the time in trying to manage costs and develop a great deal of accuracy in visual detail and the control that was able to be had over the motors and general movement of the items in the range at this time, possibly their emphasis was shifting away from toy trends to model Trains as the 1980s arrived. I'm trying to stick very firmly to the end of the 70s as the end of my collecting point, however there is always an element of mission creep. For me the new models start to lose their appeal from the mid 70s onwards. Take care. Oscar
I disagree with comment about Hornby quality. Firstly all my Hornby loco’s from the 70’s (approx 30) are still running, and were less trouble back then to say Airfix and Mainline.
Hi Oscar, Great video again. I was wondering if you ever considered selling sets of chimneys awnings for the Triang stations. I for one would love a complete set for my Triang station.
Good afternoon Gerard thanks again for taking the time to look in, with the type of 3-D printer and it operational speed I have available to me it's not a practical option to try and provide these items for sale. Elaine's Trains has the chimneys for the older buildings available www.elaines-trains.co.uk/index.php?pg=b and the two links below and a wide variety of commercially produced 3-D printed replacements for the Tri-ang range including the canopies for the older buildings. Superb loco and coaches Oscar. The Kings were not designed or built to run "sedately" they were race horses so speed is the order of the day. David
