      Shaun I would have to say that of all the people from the UK who review all things America and relay their experiences, you probably have the widest breadth of knowledge even more than Laurence who actually lives here and is a US citizen now and the reason I say that is that you have not only toured here so much but also toured widely. You've been to the heartland, the big states, the little states, both coasts, experienced so much, etc. Not even most Americans can say that. Even as a born & raised American I find myself learning new things about my own country from your travels which ought to inform your audience about just how vast the USA is. You're doing well just to see 1/3rd of the states here within a single lifetime, which is why we never leave.

      No, no, no, you're doing it all wrong, please forgive the hospitality that apparently wasn't shown to you. First of all no south Carolinian eats chicken n waffles with fruit on it. The chicken should be on the waffles. Your collards should be eaten with hot pepper vinegar, specially cayenne pepper vinegar. Those are black eyed peas grown in the south because they tolerate our summer...a form of cow or field pea, like a crowder pea that makes its own gravy, should be cooked with fat back. You spent way too much money for that meal that cost so much less anywhere else.

    Hey y'all that rice dish Shaun wasn't sure about is called Hoppin John.
    It's black eyed peas cooked with bacon or another pork product served on a bed of white rice.

    My mamaw used to tell me that the New Year's dishes were symbolic. The black eyed peas were to give foresight into the new year. The cabbage (we didn't have greens) was to signify a wish for monetary wealth, the cornbread was meant to wish for sunny golden days all year. The bacon and ham was there because it tasted great. The wine at the table was made to pull it all together! :)

    Most "southern food" that you need reservations for will pale on comparison to a great hole in the wall diner. BTW, those were blackeye peas that you were calling beans. They are a staple of southern food, along with the collards. The problem with many of these "fancy" places, they try to over-complicate things. Great southern food needs like three seasonings, butter, salt and pepper. You can make most things taste awesome with just those three things.

    • @kimmieMPA
      @kimmieMPA 13 дней назад

      Great Southern food also includes onions and garlic.

    • @bamachine
      @bamachine 13 дней назад +1

      @@kimmieMPA For certain recipes, sure. You are not putting onions and garlic in your biscuits and gravy, usually. I also never put garlic in my cornbread and milk(I do dice up sweet onions and put in the bowl with the crumbled up cornbread). My main pint was, just like the trinity of Cajun food is a mix of diced onion, bell peppers and celery, the trinity of southern cooking as a whole is butter, salt and pepper. Everything else is optional. Of course, all of this is a little tongue in cheek.

Best seafood we found (we went to 4 different places based on ratings). Gillies was the 5th and best and didn't even come up on searches until I lucked onto the name and looked it up. Next time, check out Columbia, SC.
    And also Greenville,SC.
    The terrain in this state changes the further you move from the coast.
    There are hills and mountains in the north west of this state bordering the Appalachian Mountains.
    Coast: Charleston.
    Midlands: Columbia. State capital.
    Mountains: Greenville.
    The cool thing about living in Columbia is that it's 4 hours away from each completely different environment, while here is the cumulation of 3 rivers from the mountainess west combined to flow to the ocean along with it's tributaries out into the coast.
    America is beautiful.

    You have a lot of comments already, so probably a summary:
    1) Eat fried chicken off the bone. No other way.
    2) The "sauce" you spread over the chicken was likely either Tabasco, Crystal or some other Louisiana hot sauce meant to the collard greens. The greens are TOUGH and bitter, so they need to cook low and slow to tenderize, and the bacon (and, ideally bacon fat) add much-needed flavor. The hot sauce tops it off.
    3) The "beans" are black-eye peas, and are a Southern staple. I have seen some comments about them being served on rice and being called Hoppn' John. That actually usually includes tomatoes, minus the bacon, but it may be a regional thing - even in the South (don't get Southerners - especially this prude - talking about "proper" barbecue).
    4) Pecan pie: Yes, to most Southerners, you got the pronunciation right the last time: "pih-CAHN." My fraternity house was built on an old pecan orchard - nothing like going out every Spring, collecting the nuts, and going in and cracking them for their soft, sweet meat! I don't know if you visited Magnolia's in Charleston, but they had perhaps the best pecan pie I have ever had (and after key lime, it's my favorite). Pecan-to-syrup ratio must have been at least 10:1 - I was cutting through nuts down to the crust. HIGHLY recommended.
    If you go back, a highly recommended hotel is Planter's Inn. Wonderful timely rooms right across from The Market, and the restaurant is famous for its seven-layer coconut cake (they even ship them, take online orders). Great experience, right in the thick of things, and a direct shot to/from I-26.

    Shaun, The best Fried Green Tomatoes are dipped in Corn Meal that's mixed with Buttermilk and then fried. Tomato ketchup is good to dip into. And the greens are best with Vineger splashed on them. Thos beans you atr aere Black Eyed Peas, also delicious.

    There's so much good food in Charleston that you'd have to take in every plantation tour and go up and down every deck of the USS Yorktown over in Patriot's Point to burn it off. 😁

    Just walked by Poogans Porch and Husk today. Glad you enjoyed. In the beginning of the video, you passed by Magnolia's. That was a place you should have tried. A little pricey, but all of downtown is. Would have loved if you went out to Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms area, but I know time was short for you folks. Basically just a skip over the Ravenel Bridge. A lot of nice places to eat and is where you go for the beach atmosphere. That or the other side of Charleston towards Folly Beach.

    Black eyed peas. My husband is originally from Virginia. I moved here. Traditionally they eat black eyed peas and greens for New Years Day. It's supposed to ensure you have plenty of coin and paper money in the year to come. My family from PA and NY. We always had pork roast and sourkraut for New Years day. We are German, Scottish, English (Heinz 57 🤣)That food looks amazing!!! I will eat there next time I go to Charleston.

    I can't believe they framed Jimmy Carrey's and Lauren Holley's thank you note, but labeled her name below it as Lauren Hutton lol.

    Hi Shaun, you know how to eat. I mean, take a little bit of everything, and eat it all together. I could never understand people eating all of one thing before proceeding to the next.
    I think Collard greens, or mustard or turnip greens taste best when eaten with cornbread and pepper sauce, I like the clear sauce like Trappy's, but regular Louisiana hot sauce or Tabasco is also good.

    If you’re still there, you need to go to Dave’s Carry Out on Morris Street. Freshest, best shrimp, fried, of course, and the lima beans are to die for. Say hi to Terry while you’re there. He’s the man cooking behind the counter.

    My brother and I are from the south. I never cared for fried green tomatoes, buy my brother always ate them with ranch dressing. Supposedly it's pretty good that way.

    You should’ve had the biscuit instead of the cornbread. Poogans porch is known for their biscuits

    Those are black-eyed peas, a variety of cowpeas not beans, though they are in the same family as peas and beans, very much Southern fare.

    Those collard greens and fried chicken looked good, however; you can keep the black-eyed peas. I've never been a fan of them. Thanks, sharing this adventure.

    I could eat collared greens every day of the year! Non-Southerners can’t stand them most of the time. It is a Southern Thing.
