  • Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
    In this video I will be travelling on-board a Lumo UK Class 803 electric unit from Edinburgh Waverley to London King's Cross, aboard the inaugural public service of Lumo.
    Lumo is an open-access rail operation, and part of FirstGroup, which launched in October 2021 on the route between Edinburgh and London. One of the main selling points is the service's low cost, which has led to it being a sell-out success.
    Enjoy the video. :)

    Due to a bug, Morpeth is the only station that generates lumo departures on google maps. I think the purpose of Morpeth is for passengers getting picked up, and driver’s convenience. Morpeth is the closest station to the motorway, at least in the north. It also allows drivers to bypass all the Newcastle traffic to board/disembark lumo trains without first taking another train to Newcastle, and changing there.

    • @kenstevens5065
      @kenstevens5065 25 дней назад

      The Morpeth stop could also be to do with timetable paths allowing different train speeds and spacing on the line to maintain the fastest journey times of trains with different stopping patterns. This occurs on busy long double track sections which don't allow for overtaking as on three or four track sections. This prevents faster trains having to slow down if they catch up with a slower train ahead. Morpeth also has a severe speed restriction on its curve, the scene of several derailments in the past.

    As one of five who semi-frequently travels to Dundee to visit relatives, this is a game-changer. Ticket prices for five of us have always been annoying, and the level of comfort offered on these trains seems to be far better than that of LNER. It would be far cheaper for us to get a Lumo service to Waverley, and then complete the last hour leg to Dundee with Scotrail.

    Ended up being recommended this today. I recently did my first journey on the operator.
    As with all AT-300s, the train is not one I want to like, but when its valued so low in ticket price, and is the best seating the type has in the UK, despite no First Class being provided, it speaks volumes.
    Then again, when you refuse to let the DfT affect your interior (because they spec'd the 803s to be the same as the others initially, but Lumo wanted better), that's what happens.
    But I wanted to say, you hit the nail on the head when you said how Lumo clearly understand what passengers WANT from a train service. That is something I think should be adopted by all TOCs, rather than charging folks upwards of 150 quid for on the day returns across the UK, when that could get you a month's travel in Europe

    You answered your own question about why it stops at Morpeth. There is easy access to Newcastle airport, with the alternative being a stopping train to Newcastle and changing to LNER.

    • @shinydavidhowell
      @shinydavidhowell 3 года назад +5

      I presume it also provided part of the case for it creating enough business in its own right (rather than simply off LNER) to be greenlit, a barrier that has blocked some other planned open access operators.

    I used Lumo in January 2024 when visiting Newcastle. Sure enough, the lack of luggage luggage space seemed to be an issue. The train filled almost to capacity at Kings Cross, being a detriment to the trains short length, but the shortage of space for luggage nearly resulted in fisticuffs breaking out between other passengers over the use of the luggage space. Credit to the onboard staff though, they resolved the situation, as far as I could tell

    It's good to see that lumo got the seats right. I like the class 800s/802s in some ways, but the seats really let them down, despite fire regulations, good seats are still possible. The other day when I was coming back to Bath from London, the little cushioning in the seat has pretty much collapsed, leaving me with hard horizontal bar pressing into my thighs. Come on GWR, sort it out!

      @@SuperalbsTravels though I think the choice to order 5 coach trains is questionable to say the least. GWR short-forms trains heading out of London quite a lot and this is very annoying. It also limits they're room to grow and it seems like a short-term cost-cut which could easily come back to bite them when they can't capitalize on as much of the market as they would otherwise be able to. I wish there was an open access operator operating along the Great Western Mainline, GWR is one of the most expensive operators and while it's not the worst, I think it's a below average service

    It stops at Morpeth (and I think Stevenage too - in the future) because one of their aims is to call at stations which would usually not be served by most operators giving the places with little rail service an improvement. Stations such as Morpeth and Stevenage don’t receive as many stopping services as other stations so I can understand why they would do this.

The Lumo 803’s certainly look like they have better seats than 800/802/802’s..a nice cheap and cheerful way to get between London and Scotland which would appeal to most people and their pockets too 😊👍🏽 However, where it fails for me is the lack of 1st class offering. I love to travel the longer distances with more legroom, more comfortable, wider seating with a table and in as much of a quiet ambience as possible to enjoy the journey. The Lumo air line seating is not for me, nor is being packed into these carriages with too much hustle and bustle (noise) 🤔👍🏽

    Definitely a good looking train and smart as well.
    The seats certainly look an improvement over the first three 800 classes.
    Don't get me wrong I also like those engines but the seats on them pale in comparison to them.
    I've never been on any of those three or the lumo 800 but the seats always looked a bit stiff on the first 800 classes.
    The TPE 803 nova 1 Seats were pretty good for an 800 class but this is definitely an improvement.
    Hopefully the future 800s get seats like this.
    I heard the former three 800 classes may be getting overhauls at some point to hammer out any problems they have and improve them, if they do this they should add these seats to them.
    If they do get overhauls and are improved maybe you could review them and see what you think.

      Hi Angus.
      It depends how far you book in advance.
      The cheaper fixed Advance Singles go very early on in the booking period, trains generally open up for booking 3 months before, so the most reasonable fares will be found then.

    Let's hope with the way Indian railways are being upgraded and we see such things in India.
    There are several high density routes within 250 km between capitals of various states in India
    Trains make more sense in Europe because the distance aren't that much so you'll actually spend more time reaching and checkin at airport than actually flying

    It appears from your video that if your seat was on the left side you would have been sitting the opposite way you were traveling. I'd like to avoid this! So, am I correct that if traveling from Edinburgh to London I'd better request a seat on the right hand side so as to be facing the way we'll be traveling? Thanks for the great info, we'll be using Lumo train this July

    Nice review. I'm tempted to try out the service at some point. The seats look quite comfortable with plenty of legroom. The only thing I wouldn't like is if I ended up in one of those seats between the windows where you can't see a thing. Often the case with modern rolling stock and one of the reasons I travel in first class for long distance journeys if I can get a good deal by booking in advance. I have a break in Edinburgh planned for next year so I may do one way with LNER and return with Lumo or vice versa.

      If you book far enough I’m advance. They start at £9.99 for a single but average seems to be about £20. The issue is 2 trains a day each way. So good chance you’d have to return with LNER

    • @simonc7947

      You get about a third off with a Railcard, so multiply Superalbs's price by 1.5. It's annoying that I'm either 20 years too old for a Railcard, or 10 years too young, depending on which way you look at it.

    Very fair video, pointing out some of the downsides as well as the Lumo pluses. The lack of luggage space is a real problem if you are going for more than a day return. Some of us oldies haven't the strength to lift heavy luggage onto the overhead racks. Aeroplanes also have massive luggage holds, so can minimise the cabin luggage. Having mainly airline style seating loses much of the luggage capacity. I was on the inaugural run as far as Newcastle, and the delay in departure was mainly people trying to lodge their luggage when space had run out.

  • @BarbaraHannon-q6m
    @BarbaraHannon-q6m Год назад

    I agree about the price but on the few occasions I have travelled with them I feel passengers are packed in like sardines which for me makes it an uncomfortable journey. You are not wrong about luggage space you have to be the first on the train if you want to use the luggage rack. You need minuscule luggage if you want to use the overhead racks, as for food I always bring a meal deal with me. Overall I prefer LNER and only use lumo when money is tight.

    This was exactly the sort of service that was envisaged when we privatised the railways, sadly the Government colluded with the main operators monopolistic practices and there have been as a result very few open access services and those are achieved only after years of negotiation with Network Rail, by which time the main operator has changed it's timetable and pricing to squeeze out the open access operation.

      see, the thing is, lumo arent trying to get people on planes, they are in fact doong the opposite. they are trying to get people to stop using planes from london to edinburgh. a very good reason to use the train instead of plane is because the trains go to the actual place, and somewhere outside the city, often taking up to an hour to get from the airport to the city, compared to 0 minutes. so really, its not an issue that it is a while away from the airport
