You have extensive experience with both 51mm PF and 58mm PF machines. What would you say is the difference in espresso quality or taste between the two? 51 and 58 seem quite apart to me as compared to 58 and Breville’s 54. Thanks.
Tom - thank you for videos on the Arte Machine - I got one during black friday (and a great deal on it as well!) along with the bottomless portafilter you suggested. Looking forward to making great coffee and using your videos to learn.
Thanks for the video this helped me a lot im struggling with my specialista now I know I need a scale a bottomless portafilter and a leveler or the needles 👍
Hi Tom, thanks for the video. I have for almost one year a LaSpecialista Prestigio and I absolutly love it. Here in the UK, the machine has 3 settings which are Espresso, Coffee and Americano.
Hi Tom, first of all, I would like to thank you for the variety of videos regarding this espresso-machine. Helped me a lot! I am fairly new to espresso and I have an issue, which I can only explain with my beans or the grinder of the LaSpecialista. I am using your linked basket from IMS DL2TH26E with the Delonghi standard portafilter that comes with the machine. I am using grind-level 1, which is the finest and I am using 18g of ground coffee. I use relatively fresh beans from a local roastery (100% Robusta, espresso roast C.U.L.T.D México Finca Santa Anita for anyone wondering :), I use WDT and tamp with a leveled „spring“ tamper (like a stamp). The coffee bed looks and feels good, however, I don’t reach optimal pressure and the extraction is 5 secs too fast. 35g in 20 secs. The coffee does not taste as acidic as one would think, but it’s not very good and the crema is also too thin (which is related to the lack of pressure I assume). Do you have similar experiences, where the problem is related to the bean and/or the grinding capabilities of the LaSpecialiste-grinder being insufficient in terms of fineness of the grind? Best regards from Hamburg!!
Moin, moin! Well, this machine does not grind very fine, so you might actually have to go back to the included OEM basket, which is tapered, and adds to the pressure of the extraction. But yes, also due to the very long pre-infusion, I find that this machine extracts very quickly afterwards. Maybe try the OEM basket, and see if that works better. Otherwise, you could consider the H32 basket, for a larger dose, but that's just more money to spend. Good luck!
Moin! Thanks for your fast reply! Highly appreciate it. OEM-basket works very good with the same settings and coffee and delivers almost perfect results. However, the „stamp-tamper“ can’t be used with the OEM-basket, because of the tapered form (it gets caught on the rim). That’s why I initially opted for your recommendation. The basket is perfect and I see why you recommended it, which makes me wanna use it consistently from now on. I don’t recall, if you mentioned your coffee in this video, I will try a different bean with the same settings. I think that could work, since you do it in this video, even with a smaller dose of 16g. Again, many thanks to you and have a lovely week!
Thanks Tom, speaking about espresso, perhaps it should be legit to mention italian style espresso which is shorter than your like, maybe you call it ristretto but for us it's regular espresso :)

Thanks Tom, this was very informative! Also The La Specialista i purchased is metal, not plastic. It was about $200 more than the previous version. Next stop is your milk steaming episode! I have so much to learn.
What a great video. I purchased a la specialista that has a pressure gauge that doesn’t work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Whenever I try to use my coffee machine (I have the same one, EC9155), the pressure indicator goes into the red zone and coffee barely drips. Hi Tom, Your video is great and hopefully my second time use of Delonghi La Specialista will no longer be a Failed one which i just uploaded on my CMG Channel. stay safe to everyone
I really like your tutorials which allow me to prepare good coffee. However, it would be interesting to know the degree of roasting of your coffee, also why you grind on position 2, also why the temperature is at maximum on your machine. I hope you consider my questions a sign of interest in what you do ;-)
Howdy! My coffee is a med-dark roast, freshly roasted. Grind position is 2, because this machine does not grind super fine. I am aiming for my extraction to be 25 seconds or so, as a ballpark figure. High temp because this is a thermoblock machine, and temperature is lost at the unheated brew group and portafilter. Cheers!
Thank you for this informative video. Could you please share your thoughts on the quality of the grinder in this machine? I’m hesitating between Dedica Arte plus separate grinder and Specialista Arte.
You use setting “x2” for one cup. Why? What does it change? The amount of the water, or the amount of the grinded beans? Please explain it to me. Thank you!
But is the grinder easy to clean? Otherwise some tiny amounts of old ground coffee will accumulate in the grinding mechanism and become rancid, and affect the taste of the ground coffee.
Hi Tom - I love your videos! Any idea about what the grams mean for a shot? Thanks Hallo Tom, ich liebe deine Videos! Irgendeine Idee, was die Grammangabe für einen Schuss bedeutet? Danke
Hi mate, really enjoy your videos and and really liked your wide range of coffee cups!! I wanted to get the lungo and espresso cups, and was wondering if you had any link of a website where I could get any of those?
Hi there! I'm learning (slowly but surely) how to get my espresso right with my new machine (the one that you present). I have coffee ground in my espresso shot and I don't understand why... I've try to change the grinding setting, but it doesn't help that much... What can you suggest? do you have a video for that? I didn't seem to find one! :O
Q: what would you set dose & grind settings for using different roast and region beans. Eg: if you were to take Starbucks blonde roast, what setting would you use?
Hey Sven, the grind depends on each bean, so you will have to experiment. Just try for a 16 gram dose in a double basket, and grind fine enough to get double that yield in 25 seconds.
Hi Tom! I just bought this machine and watching your video's! They're great, thank you for that! I was wondering wat is the correct brew ratio for an Americano/long black? I found on internet 15g coffee for a 30ml espresso topped with 150ml water. What would you recommend?
This machine is such a great starting package. Thanks for demonstrating it. I loved it so much I might consider getting this machine with that same naked portafilter someday. (Nice wood design!) I'm wondering, what grind setting do you use? It seems intimidating getting that 25-30 second pull time and as I hate wasting I'd probably drink every over/under extracted shot. 😂
Hey Tom, thanks for the great explanation! Do you have compared your machine to others? Would you recommend the Delonghi La Specialista over the Sage Barista Express? They are very comparable, however it seems like the Delonghi got the edge when it comes to milk steaming. I also like the design of the grinder and funnel, sems like a cleaner process. Maybe you could give me your opinion, cheers!
Hi! Well, I think the Arte is Delonghi's answer to the Barista Express, which is a best seller. I prefer the Delonghi for it's longevity. I have worked on both machines, and I prefer the engineering of the Delonghi. The Sage has a higher grinder resolution however. Cheers! Tom

Hi, i want to buy the same basket, but when i login into the website it says there are different type of basket which one you use . 24 or 28. Hope to know thanks
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thanks, since i have that Single Delonghi, i don’t know if the upgrade worth it. Does it has any problems after months of usage? Thanks again
Hello Tom! Great video. I’ve just purchased the botomless portafilter thanks to this video, my shots were being made really good (according to me) with the portafilter that came with La Specialidtia . However, I’m making a mess with the botomless (too fast, spraying too much and set the grind to #2) as suggested by you. How many grams does each basket or the three would you recommend? Thanks Tom !
Just got this machine, thank you so much for the vid, its helped alot with making my husband's coffee drinks, so now comes the questions 😀 Why did you pour your milk from one jug to the next making the cappuccino? Why does my coffee puck get stuck to the top of the machine when I remove the portafilter? And I am truly struggling to make my coffee which is decaf (prior heart issues) taste good, I can not find even a happy medium using Lavazza Decaf Dark Espresso Roast Whole Bean Coffee. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Iv almost used the while bag in a week trying to figure it out and dont want to settle for a so so flavor.
I find that decaf is harder to dial in, and often it's quite old, as it sits on the counter for months. I'd check the side of the bag for the date. I pour from one jug to the other, to incorporate the milk better. Sometimes the puck gets stuck for me, too. It doesn't bother me. Cheers!
I just bought EC9155 . But I don't get creamy espresso or any that you show. I don't know what to do. 😭 . Do i need to buy the basket that you mentioned?
Hi Tom. I have the same machine but I’m not planning on using the bean grinder that’s attached to it. Instead I bought the Baratza Sette 30 AP Espresso Grinder. I wanted to know how many grams of beans and what would be the perfect grind setting from the Baratza Sette 30. Thank you and your reply is much appreciated.
Hi there! Well, you have to find the grind setting yourself. I'd start with 16 grams, and grind fine enough to get 32 grams out, in 25-30 seconds, as a ballpark figure.
Podrías hacer un vídeo de la arte con el portafiltro de serie, el que viene en la cafetera al comprarla. Un expreso y un café con leche grande. Gracias
Thanks for the idea! I guess I should have used the original portafilter, but I just like using the bottomless. I will likely do a video in the future with the stock PF again. Cheers!
Hi Tom. I'm thinking of getting an espresso machine. I have my eyes on this machine, with option 2 being the ECP35.31 + a standalone grinder. In your opinion, which would be the better option to as a avid coffee (latte) drinker? Or do you have other suggestions of what is the best go to coffee machine in the sub £500 price range? Love your videos, they're very informative and well presented. Thanks
Hi there! I would suggest the ECP and standalone grinder over the EC9155. I like the Fellow Opus, Eureka Manuale, for economical grinders. Otherwise you might want to wait for a Sage Barista Express when it goes on sale. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I ended up going with the Sage Dup Temp Pro and the Eureka Manuale. The Sage is fantastic however the grinder is incapable as a single dose grinder. It doesn't grind fine enough for me and therefore even when I fill up the basket and tamp as best as I can, the coffee just flows too quickly. I have set the grinder to just offset from the burrs touching, the closest safe zone if you like but still to coarse I think, especially looking at some of the vidoes on YT. I get around 40ml from 16g in around 22-23 seconds. I want to aim for 30 seconds, although the lattes do taste great, think they can be a bit better if I can slow the extraction down. I even tried the dual wall basket to slow things down but with no luck. So I will be returning the Eureka Manuale for this reason. In your opinion, would the Smart Grinder Pro be a better option as a single dose grinder? Appreciate your input.
Thank You for the demonstration. It's very helpful. One question: How to get the optimal range of pressure right? My machine is going a bit past that range so im worried that i have something set wrong... Please help. Thank You kindly.
Yes, but you need fresh beans, ideally. Like freshly roasted I mean. They provide more resistance themselves. Just know that there's not much fine tuning in the 8 grinder settings.
I start the timer when the extraction starts, as that is when the process begins. The puck first needs to get saturated, and succumb to the incoming pressure before it starts dripping. That is part of the process.
Great Video! Do you recommend making normal black coffee with the "De'Longhi La Specialista" or would you prefer a different model? Im looking for a nice machine for mostly making black coffee, cappuccino and espresso.
Hi Deniz! You can make a good Americano or Long Black with the Specialista. You could also consider the Breville Barista Pro. Both models provide good ergonomics for those drinks. I have them listed in the description if you wanna take a look. Cheers!

Hey Tom! I just got this machine and i don’t know why the optimal zone keeps going super high. I’ve changed the grind setting to a 4 which comes out like a puck now. But I still don’t know why the optimal goes so high. Still haven’t gotten a nice espresso from it yet
Hi Elizabeth, hmm, I am not sure. Normally, people have issues with the pressure being too low. Maybe try less coffee? I measure mine out with a scale to be 16 grams. Check out this video if you haven't already: ruclips.net/video/2_J3GiDttWQ/видео.html Cheers, Tom
Hi, you're right! I didn't catch that while making the video. However, I weigh out the beans to make sure I have a proper dose, and I weigh my shot too, so that kind of overrides the automatic settings. Cheers!
Hi Tom, could you help me out, or some other watcher?! I am using the same bean and roast as my favourite coffee shop. When I brew in this brewer the coffee is to acidic and I get a heart burn. Could you advise me on settings. I am trying coarser and lower temperature but can’t fix it.
Hi Tom , I have a question if I make my coffe the pressure never gets up. And I don’t know if I do something wrong or my machine is broken. Please help me

Just out of curiosity you wouldn't happen to do a video on the De'longhi Tamper (not the one that comes with the machine) Supposedly the one with wood handle is meant to be better? It costs $25 AUD which is why i am looking at it compared to the Normcore which is $99 or should i just stick with the stock tamper Called: DLSC058
Hi! Well, I have a favorite 51mm tamper that fits nicely in the aftermarket baskets, but it does not fit in the La Specialista baskets due to their ridge. I have not tested the DLSC058 with the Specialista though, so I cannot say for sure if it would fit or not. Sorry I don't have a better answer, but I will see if I can get my hands on one in the future. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Tom! Appreciate your videos , really helpfull! I bought this machine two months ago, it’s been a ride, love everything related to coffee. Just a question. I ofcourse bought a scale, I don’t know the two espresso basket size (it’s says 29/22 whatever that means) Usually weight 19 grams. Since I have a weighting machine to see how many beans I’m using, the dose level on the machine is obsolete right? Or does it have some type of quirk . Lastly, how many grams would you recommend with single and double shot baskets. Thanks !
Hey Leo, aim for 16 grams in the double, and 8-9 grams in the single. Don't bother with the knob on the machine - rather weigh your dose. Have fun experimenting! Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks for replying Tom! Im currently using a medium roast, with the grinding at 2. Espresso 1:2 comes out averaging 27-30 seconds so at least i know im doing something right, however, the pressure always goes too high. I am tamping with much less pressure and cant seem to find a solution, what would you recommend ? If i grind it coarser, than it would take 17-23 seconds . Thanks!
Hi Tom. I have the same machine. The question is that begore I buy, I can also put less coffee, 7-8 g, for one person in the IMS basket, and will the effect be the same - nice espresso?
Hi there! Ah, no that will not work. The IMS basket is meant for about 16 grams. Putting half a dose in there will result in a watery, weak shot, and a big mess. Cheers!
Hi Tom, I have everything almost identical to your setting here. Grinder setting 2. 16 grammes of powder. Single wall basket. Extract for 36ml for 20seconds. But my pressure is only 5-6 bars on my La Specialista Arte. How can I increase the water pressure? By grinding finer powder? More grammes of coffee? Or Temping harder? Thanks.
I was thinking about buying this machine but i am concerned that it can't grind fine enough. Where i live i can buy quality coffe (35$/kg) but few months old in stores. I've seen in many videos that people grind at 1 and its pouring too fast. What if that happens to me? I already have dedica and delonghi grinder and i always grind at 1 and ita not fine enough..
Hi Igor. If you already have a Dedica, I would suggest selling the DeLonghi grinder and getting one they can grind really well. May be like a eureka Specialita. A hang grinder like the JX Pro might also be a good choice, if you were looking to do it a little more economically.
Definitely a nice starter machine for those on a deep- reduction budget, or those who are satisfied to have decent home-brewed coffee and don’t want to go all-in. Inherently though, machines like this and Breville, and others will quickly leave you wishing you had dug a little deeper. The grinders don’t have enough range to dial out all the variables you’ll run into, the steam process can be cumbersome and noisy. Longevity is a concern, and parts/service can be very difficult to find. For those with the budget, you can look around and get into a nice HX and grinder package for $2K - $2500. Financing options are endless for those tight on cash, and if you’re a really good shopper, you can even get some of the required tools and goodies in some packages, and you’ll. Be free of many of the burdens mentioned above. With that said, this machine comes with just about everything except the stomper box most baristas will want, and is great way to feel-out your skills and desires before making the jump to more expensive “pro-consumer” and light commercial equipment. Wish this one had been around 20 years ago.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I live in Norway. The EC685 can be found for 150 bucks and the EC9155 is close 500. But with a good grinder, portafiter and all they will be pretty close I think. Seems like a good allrounder and easy to use the EC9155.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner We have our own retailers. Both online and physical stores. I ordered the EC9155, going to pick it up tomorrow. Any advice on coffee beans? I know I won't get the same brand as you're using probably but how to spot good coffee beans? :)
Hello Tom. This is great video. I found very detail about Delonghi but I want to buy coffee machine. I did decide yet. I'm looking also Philips EP5447/90. Which machine have better coffee taste?
Hi there! Well, the Delonghi is an espresso machine, while the Philips is a bean to cup coffee machine. The Philips will not grind fine enough, or provide enough pressure for a proper espresso. But the Philips will be a good choice if you want a coffee crema, at the press of a button.

Awesome! Glad you liked it, and thanks for watching!
Thank you!
It grinds more. I just always do doubles, to be honest. Cheers!
Nice video, thanks! Unfortunately, that wasn't a Cappuccino. You did a Flat White or Café Latte there. ;)
But is the grinder easy to clean?
Otherwise some tiny amounts of old ground coffee will accumulate in the grinding mechanism and become rancid, and affect the taste of the ground coffee.
Nope, it's not easy. You have to take the machine apart to get to the grinder. Cheers!
Hi Tom - I love your videos! Any idea about what the grams mean for a shot? Thanks
Hallo Tom, ich liebe deine Videos! Irgendeine Idee, was die Grammangabe für einen Schuss bedeutet? Danke
Great Video Thank you

Hi mate, really enjoy your videos and and really liked your wide range of coffee cups!! I wanted to get the lungo and espresso cups, and was wondering if you had any link of a website where I could get any of those?
Hi there! The ceramic cups are Ancap, and the little glass espresso glasses are these: geni.us/MontanaEspressoGlasses (affiliate link)
Cheers!
I prefer using my Delonghi Automatic Coffee Machine. No messy and faster process, all automatic.
why your expresso is to long than me..:( my extraxion time is 5/6s… can you explain me please ?
I'd say 150ml is right on for me, too. But you can vary it a bit according to your taste. Cheers!
Hi there and thanks for your feedback! The grind setting really depends on the bean itself. I normally grind on the two-four setting. Cheers! Tom
I don’t get very much liquid with my espresso setting and small coffee grain holder
Cheers! Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCorner hey Tom what is grind resolution? Is that finer grind size or just more options
How to get the coffee to be so creamy and have such nice cream on top? when I make coffee with the same machine it does not do that :/

I’m guessing that your beans are probably too old - or in other words roasted too long ago.

Hi, i want to buy the same basket, but when i login into the website it says there are different type of basket which one you use . 24 or 28. Hope to know thanks
Thank you !
Do i need to press on the temperature button everytime i want to make the coffee?
Nope, it remembers the last selection.
Thanks Tom !
hi there! 16 grams for the double. Fresh beans are a must for bottomless extractions. I mean freshly roasted. Cheers!
How do i do a lungo? Can tou tell me step by step?
Just pull your espresso shot longer. Instead of a 2:1 ratio, aim for 3:1 or 4:1. Cheers!
Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thank you for your response.
OK, another crazy question 😅 Iv no clue what the dose knob actually does or how it works. Would you mind explaining? Thanks in advance 😊
Hey. I'll start with spresso. Whats the difference between EC9155 and EC9355.
Which one do you recommend to me?
The 9355 has the integrated tamper, and you can remove the bean hopper to get at the burrs. I'd go for that one if you can swing it.
Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner gracias a tí. Con ganas de ver ese vídeo y seguir valorando la specialista arte para una futura adquisición.

Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thank you!
You could just coarsen the grind, or dose less. Please have a look at my other La Specialista videos.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Will try it in the morning again.
Thank You for your reply.
Are the grinder settings fine enough to pull decent espresso shots on this machine? Looks great otherwise
Yes, but you need fresh beans, ideally. Like freshly roasted I mean. They provide more resistance themselves. Just know that there's not much fine tuning in the 8 grinder settings.
Tom excellent video, is there a portafilter holder that you recommend for the 51mm portafilter of the Specialista
Yes, there is a link in the video description for a Normcore one. Cheers!
When do you start the timer ? When the first drop comes to the cup or before ?
I start the timer when the extraction starts, as that is when the process begins. The puck first needs to get saturated, and succumb to the incoming pressure before it starts dripping. That is part of the process.
Hi,
Did u ever hear of a costway espresso machine?
Nope, sorry. Which market is that in?
i can’t get to the potimal zone what can i do
Great Video!
Cheers!
Hi Tom! Why the SCA defines espresso as 8-9grams of coffee and 1:3 but everyone seems to use 16-18grs of coffee and 1:2 ratio?
Haha, I think it's because we want more caffeine.
Hey great video! I got the same machine but my coffee tastes really bitter.. i think it also looks too dark. What can i do? Thanks!😅

Hi Elizabeth, hmm, I am not sure. Normally, people have issues with the pressure being too low. Maybe try less coffee? I measure mine out with a scale to be 16 grams. Check out this video if you haven't already: ruclips.net/video/2_J3GiDttWQ/видео.html
Cheers, Tom
Is 330€ a good price for this machine (brand new)?
That's a really nice price. Never seen it that low actually.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks Tom! It's 330€ and includes a "120€ Welcome Kit" by Delonghi. I'll buy it!
On 0:24 the button was set for double espresso. Did you make all the drinks with one shot or with a double.
Hi, you're right! I didn't catch that while making the video. However, I weigh out the beans to make sure I have a proper dose, and I weigh my shot too, so that kind of overrides the automatic settings. Cheers!

Why you still machine while brewing, it don't have a auto stop?
It has autostop, but I like to stop it myself, so that I get it exactly on point, 2:1 ratio for example.
Well, if it's acidic, try using the hottest temperature. Try also grinding finer, as this machine doesn't grind super fine anyway. Good luck!
the lungo must be sour ? anyways i wish to taste your espresso once :) it alwasy comes out so good
Hello Tom. Is it possible according to your experience to do it with almond milk?
Alternative milks are possible, but much harder to texture...aim for the "barista" versions...

Just out of curiosity you wouldn't happen to do a video on the De'longhi Tamper (not the one that comes with the machine) Supposedly the one with wood handle is meant to be better?
It costs $25 AUD which is why i am looking at it compared to the Normcore which is $99 or should i just stick with the stock tamper
Called: DLSC058
What coffee beans do you use?
Oh, it varies. I wrote an article about it: tomscoffeecorner.com/what-are-the-best-beans-for-espresso/

Nice overview!
Thank you!
My machine does not make pressure, coffee comes less thick
Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thanks
Hi Tom, I have everything almost identical to your setting here. Grinder setting 2. 16 grammes of powder. Single wall basket. Extract for 36ml for 20seconds. But my pressure is only 5-6 bars on my La Specialista Arte. How can I increase the water pressure? By grinding finer powder? More grammes of coffee? Or Temping harder? Thanks.
Hi Kam, I made this video just to answer that question: ruclips.net/video/2_J3GiDttWQ/видео.html
I hope that helps! Tom
Tak!
Thanks for watching, and for your support!
I can agree with all you said. Cheers!
I'm really torn between this and the EC685. I have a Nespresso Gran Lattissima for over a year but want to try fiddling with my own coffee!
Hmm, both fun machines. What market are you in?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I live in Norway. The EC685 can be found for 150 bucks and the EC9155 is close 500. But with a good grinder, portafiter and all they will be pretty close I think. Seems like a good allrounder and easy to use the EC9155.
