Robbie was one of the "Great ones". Musician, story teller and teacher. RIP Robbie.
I read Robbie's book and remembered these stories, but hearing Robbie telling it is priceless. Miss you Robbie.
No one will really know except the members of the Band what actually happened amongst themselves But the one things that comes across in my opinion is that they truly cared and had a genuine love for each other There music is timeless, helped define a generation, and as musicians were nothing short of brilliant and respected by their peers and admired by them as well I respect Robbies decision and insight on what the road would have done to them had they continued They have left a legacy of excellence, and a body of work that keeps generations listening , discovering , and is timeless

and Gordon Lightfoot at The Riverboat in Yorkville and over 20 times at Massey Hall. R.I.P. to all the musicians I
saw in the 60's & 70's who have passed. "Fallen Angels" all.
That's a great interview. Very good interviewer too. I guess we'll never know the 100% truth about Robbie's relationship with the band members, but what a beautiful tribute to Levon at 26 mins.

I've spoken to Bill Dillon a number of times. He's played with Robbie longer than any of the original Band members played with Robbie. He can be seen performing with Robbie on the David Letterman show and elsewhere. Bill is adamant about what a fine man Robbie was.

I, for one, am eternally grateful that Robbie has written his autobiography. I haven't obtained a copy of his book as yet, but I fully intend to.
I too was blown away by the Skyline Lounge story when reading the book. I also think if one reads the whole book it demonstrates so much of what brought the band to a close, mostly drugs and alcohol abuse.
I just finished reading Testimony. I read many biographies, but this is the most exciting and moving one.

He has such a unique way of talking about his career. He always makes me laugh and he does it the same way every time. Truly his own man and able to see the humor in all of it as well as the meaningfulness. I had read/heard some real negative stuff somewhere that he was such a selfish and demanding guy - like it was all him and no one else mattered in The Band. Obviously, that is not found here. Where is the truth? Listen some more....

We all have our favorites. I love all The Band members. They were all multitalented. My favorites though are Robbie and Rick Danko. Robbie because he wrote the songs, and great guitar player, Rick for his soulful singing and both of them for their charm, charisma and when they were younger very good looking and sexy.@@Luke-pd7xj

I couldn't agree more. I love The Band and I visited Richard's grave in Stratford a couple of years ago for my birthday. I just wanted to pay my respects and say thanks for all the music, I purchased a small bottle of Grand Marnier and drank a shot or 2 at his graveside and I never felt so alive in all my life. I am Irish and grew up listening to the Band from a very early age all thanks to my Dad.
Rip Richard. .....I have mixed feelings about Robbie....kinda sucks...cuz I love the band.....but then again I don't know him. Or any of the others.... Just love the music they gave us.

@@ynotttt Songwriting credits are pretty straightforward. They all had LOTS of opportunities to write songs and didn't. Such is life. You don't get songwriting royalties for being the rhythm section no matter what. Robbie just became successful and obviously has a high opinion of himself, two things a lot of people don't like. I like his story telling and love his songs but some interviews I'm like 'dude, you never discovered penicillin".
I agree with the interviewer. Muddy's "Caledonia" in the raw Last Waltz footage was indeed a great tune.

Such an ironic situation that The Band was coming apart with hard drugs, at the same time that their music led so many people out of that false drug infested world of the 60s into something more honest and natural.
I have always loved The Band, all of them, but Robbie was always my favorite, he was so good looking when he was younger. Reading his book I found I can identify with some of the things Robbie is writing about. I was adopted and an only child, but I did not have abusive parents. By the way since I kind of rediscovered The Band I have also developed a soft spot for Rick Danko. Robbie and Rick were both so good looking, sexy and so much charisma back then.

I'm of Robbie's generation. When President Kennedy was assisinated I was a teenager in my native Denmark. When MLK and Bobby Kennedy was shot I was an au pair in Westport Ct. and Robbie is describing how my generation felt at that time. We just couldn't believe it and had trouble digesting it. Like Tom Hayden said "we became a generation of what if's".

I love the Band! Five different guys.......All unique ! ... Levon is my favourite member cos of his soulful voice and great drumming! But thank God Robbie wrote all those songs ........They were such a great band ..... Great Songs ....Great Arrangements ....Great Musicians ........Great blending voices ......... They all played their part and that's what made the band so great ........Money changes people ........ but I still love the band ;)

They all made each other great. And they all made Robbie rich. He said the members of the band have fallen into drug addiction. He had had enough and tired of living on the road. Interpreted that has Robbie had his addiction and his drug of choice was money fed by greed. And he was getting high off of the talent and hard work from the very people he called his brothers his friends the band. Then finally Robbie through the foggy Haze and lens of his drug of choice reached his Nirvana his ultimate High, the last Waltz.. he took all the drugs and went home and left the rest high and dry, why his friends was left with nothing but withdrawals. I think the Last Waltz, the way it was structured the money and how much each would get paid, and they all had a choice take it or leave it. I believe everyone except Robbie got 30 or 40,000 a piece over a 2-year period and Robbie still to this day receives money and royalties and that concert. The rest of the band never received another dime. I think that sums up Robbie and his true motives and how his drug of choice had such a bad effect on his brothers his friends the band. From the beginning until the end I never seen it coming
Robbie made The Last Waltz happen. The band showed up and played. Big difference.

Read Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band, "Across the great divide". It gives a pretty balanced view of what happen, is quite critical of Robbie at times. However, according to Hoskyns they all made a lot of money, much was wasted on drugs and bad money management.@@dennisddd8243

MATTHEW LEWIS: Rick, on the new album, I really like your version of Twilight. Why did you pick that particular old Robbie Robertson song to record?
RICK DANKO: I hate to say this, but it's as much of a Rick Danko song as it is a Robbie Robertson song. I just forgot to seek (credit). Robbie was very tight with sharing those responsibilities. That's why he's where he is, and that's why we are where we are, to make a long story short... He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity,
MATTHEW: Are there a lot of old Band songs that you feel you should have been credited on?
RICK: I feel that way about the whole band. Especially the music. A lot of them stories, Levon (Helm, Band singer and drummer) told a lot of great stories that we worked in the lyrics for songs. But that's behind us. I feel much the way Mike Love (of the Beach Boys) feels. (Love sued bandmate Brian Wilson for denying him songwriting credits.) Maybe I'll have to end up hiring his lawyer (laughs).
MATTHEW: What's your relationship with Robbie these days?
RICK: I don't really speak to him or see him that much. He's hanging out in that Armani crowd, I guess, wearing them Armani suits.

Unfortunately Rick is just as mistaken here about how royalties work as Levon was in his book. Collaborating doesn’t get you a writing credit. That’s just not the way it works.

But remember, it's his story that he's telling, and maybe that's not "the" story. Side note - wow, he comes off as completely self-centered in this interview, like, everything he's done and doing is some sort of favor he's doing us.
@Marten Dekker He didn't "keep," he bought the rights because some of the guys needed the money. You can argue he could have given them a chance to get them back, out of friendship or loyalty. But he didn't "steal" anything.

@@Hickbilly9 Robbie hated heroin. He tried it once and found it a grim and frightening drug. He stayed away from it although he used other drugs. Refer to his autobiography which I have read.
Uh, they all smoked. I believe Robbie still does. He was doing coke while the rest were smacked out on heroin. There weren't participating, he was trying to keep it going, and finally just gave up.

And how he “ forgot” to include others in the royalty for co writing. Wasn’t the first - or last. His buddy slowhand matched him well. Not uncommon- not so nice. Evidence- listen to Todd Rundgren interview when he produced their album. That said- brilliant brilliant songwriter.

Never said anything negative about Levon? Just called him negative and difficult and basically lots of damning character traits in this interview alone. Along with stating he never raised any issues for 10 years. Evidence to the contrary.
Leavon's "Demon" as Robbie called it,...was in fact Leavon just wanting people to be spiritually "better" than they were able to consciously be.

Ronnie Hawkins said Levon's bitterness happened after "he blew through all of his money".
Levon did the same to Ronnie Hawkins, when he didn't agree with Ronnie's management style and Levon and the other Band member wanted to split and form their own band, apparently Levon totally turned on Ronnie forgetting they use to be friends. @@ckidd2436
Why did they quit so soon? They were all still young. They could of just took a hiatus for awhile. Of course they wouldn't of had the Last Waltz.
Robbie left home at age 14 (1957) and moved to another country to try his hand as a professional musician. If you read his autobiography, you will see these early years were grim. He and Levon fought hard and long to achieve their dream. They lived on-the-road for 19 years, achieving all their original goals. It is imperative for humans to keep setting new goals to survive this life we are given. The road started taking a toll. Drug use, which started with diets pills in the 1950’s, were now bad habits clinging to the backs of his band mates (except for Garth). Manuel, Danko and Helms appeared to have lost their way in search of their next fix. All the money, talent and fame was no longer their passion. Self-destruction in the form of alcohol and drugs took over their lives. Yes, Robertson did drugs right along with them. But he lucked out and his passion for work and family were stronger than his next high. Read his book. Do I believe every word of it? No, but I do believe in the grim realities of touring. We’ve lost too many great musicians because of life on-the-road, or habits they picked up while touring that followed them home. Personally, I cannot imagine living out of a suitcase for 19 years.
@@KatieReadsKoziesAndMore I read Testimony. I dont think I learned too much I didnt already know. What be the issues between RR and Helm are 2 sides to every story. I also read This Wheel Is On Fire by Levon which I enjoyed more. Ive alwys liked RR, great artist. However I dont like the man so much. His book was full of self love snd appraisal. He, was the best and had the biggest and best of everthing down to best coffee and best gourmet food. Not so much these dsys. His wife divorced him after the release of his book, he lost his biggest best malibu home. Sometimes learning the person behind the talent isnt always a good thing. The Band gave us alot if good music and for that Im grateful
Sammy Scotch Agreed. I base my he said/he said on record sales following Robertson’s departure from The Band. Those numbers are a statement-of-fact. There is no doubt that both men are flawed. Undoubtedly, Testimony has much of Robbie’s storytelling...not necessarily truth telling in it. There is also no doubt that Levon’s voice and musicality was vital to the success of the band. Drugs and ego are very destructive to the longevity of too many talented musicians. I know many couples who break up after retirement when both spouses are home and they realize just how much there is to dislike about each other. Karma comes back on each and every one of us.

We dont think about older people divorcing after near a lifetime together but it happens. It makes me glad I didnt hang in there w my ex. To live the last chapter of your life hating the person your with would be so much worse than living alone. Im alone but not lonely. When married I was very lonely and depressed. Well, I have been working this out for some time. Of ,course who am I : nobody. Mr. Robertson was the main force of those songs. Its accepted in the industry that the main writer gets the most credit and money royalties. Its well known that the others did not write as much. Mr; Helm was not a prolific writer after the band. However, It seems Mr Helm's beef was more towards the fact that the others did in fact contribute to the creation of those songs and as friends and buddy's coming up together; Mr. Robertson could have given them more acknowledgement and a better percentage of songwriting credits.
So, more money for less work? By the end, especially, the rest were all strung out on heroin, didn't want to participate/do the work, so Robbie basically had to take over running things, then they wanted to cry because he got more recognition and money. He got tired of trying to pull them together, so, Last Waltz happened. They got together after that, without Robbie, and never really had another hit again. There's some math in that.
You can't do it better just saying

man this interviewer is such a giggly fan boy. at 15 min: too bad Robbie didn't get into the meat about Ruby who had major mob ties from Chicago, New Orleans, and Vegas. Ruby also worked for Nixon as an informant in the 40's. Ruby complained of injections while in jail and begged to be taken out of Dallas and wanted to be sent to DC. he was scheduled for another trial. he died of cancer only 1 month after diagnosed. he was a health nut who never smoked. famous reporter Dorothy Kilgallen saw him in private while he was in jail. she bragged that she would break the case wide open. she died soon after, and her friend who had her diary was killed soon after and her diary is gone.
but the Last Waltz is a classic on many levels.
It's doubtful Robertson knew any more about Ruby than what any of us would know about a shady club owner whom we hope will pay us in cash and not rubber.

Being a American I am aware of Canada with the French vs the English harsh feelings for each other I wonder who they treated Robbie being half Indian probably the same way America treated native Americans Indian hear what a shame on America shame on Canada give back to the Indian and ask for forgiveness even though we don't deserve it and leave them alone

RR always mentions his Indian heritage. He moved from the res when he was a kid and never did return or do anything for the nation less it be a photo op and story for him. But what really turned me off was his book Testimony which is more a love letter to himself. Also he said he saw Levon in the hospital when he was dying and they had a good conversation about old times. Levon's wife wouldnt allow him to see Levon and Levon couldnt talk at that point anyway.. He lied.
Proof of this, the wife refused him? hmmm.
Robbie never said when he visited Levon that they talked, he said he went and held his hand, but Levon was not aware, he was in coma.

Ok, I certainly don't believe Helm either. But don't you dare try to put him down as a douche bag. Levon Helm was one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, he always pulled his weight, he always gave his band members their props, he was a hell of a nice guy once you got to know him. The second half of his life was a very hard row to hoe and he needed someone to blame for it. He was human and over time he developed an incorrect viewpoint. It happens. And your critique doesn't take Robbie's own feelings into account. He has always considered Levon a brother and a friend, and one of the best musicians he's ever worked with, and he even visited him on his deathbed. I think both of you should know you each have no clue, neither of you were there. Robbie was. I'll take MY cues from him.
The way I heard the story (second and third hand) was that after years of living "high off the hog" the money started to run out and Robbie, who was a bit more sophisticated and worldly, not only had earned more money than the others but had invested and protected his assets better. Whether or not writing credits should have been different, no one broached the subject when it would have made a difference. All of these men are incredibly important and special as a group and this "whose side are you on" is just silly. It's about the music afterall and everything else is the business of those involved.
No matter whose side you take in Robbie vs. Levon, one thing is for sure..Levon was not a douche bag. That guy in your avatar would certainly agree.

I just listen to this interview and can't shake the vibe of him being a phony. It's not only this interview. I got the same vibe while watching Rumble. I can honestly say I can't get behind anything he says just because of the feeling I get while listening to the words he says.

So where on earth is Jack Ruby in this story? Blown out the roof of the Skyline Lounge? Oh. About 20mins in you find out the unsurprising thing that Ruby owned the night club they played in. Once in Fort Worth. Except it was Dallas, so someone says. Suppose he could have more than one nightclub. So much for Jack Ruby. It'd be a better interview if that red herring/brush with celebrity, was never mentioned. Once its clear he wasn't RR's dad. Not a word about BD! That's funny.
