Many are critical of Andrew Yang, but he actually answers questions and has discussions with the like minded and those of dissent. Rare! One might not agree with his politics, but the man has ideas and Americans should get behind this, if nothing but for open primaries and rank choice voting!

It should be pointed out that people are going after Yang because he is going after the most powerful power structures in the world. He has become the duopoly's biggest threat, so expect the anti-Yang propaganda to ramp up 100x. Breaking Points better get on board instead of being ideological purists if they ever want the change they proclaim.

"Why don't you just take over the Democratic party" is a bit of a naive question by Saagar. A third party is the answer because it forces the duopoly to compete for the marginal vote. The third party doesn't have to win, it just has to force the duopoly to change to capture enough votes to win.

@Firefly fly unfortunately the US systems gives almost no power to small parties. There is no parliament or proportional representation to ensure a seat at the table. This means that interest voters are either ignored or the issues of those voters is taken up by one of the two big parties. This is the point of the question. Without structural change, either the Democrats or Republicans will have to implement Yang's goals, so why not skip the third party step.

Some questions NEED to be asked, because: 1) it allows the interviewee a chance to give their answer why their method is the chosen one, and 2) it will invariably come up anyway from some other outlet or person. We can't just ASSUME an answer like it's obvious, and not bother to ask the question at all.

I want this video to be viewed by every single American. Forward Independent sounds like what I have been trying to explain to friends/family/voter registration for the last 10 years. @Delana Taylor Online It sounds a little like the Justice Democrats (except JDs DO train and run candidates). I'm hoping there are enough outside coalitions who can band together to get some of these done, like ranked choice voting. Yes, there's a duopoly, but I think it can be cracked by opening up a more democratic process.

I love the idea of democracy dollars.
I'm more center-right, so not a huge fan of gigantic goverment expenditures. But small amounts of spending that can have enormous impact are very appealing to me. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more tax to cover something with a small, predictable and narrow cost that could have outsized influence. 100 bucks per american, per election would be like 16 billion dollars based on how many people voted in the presidential last year, which would absolutely dwarf the current corporate/union/doner class money.
It also has the advantage of avoiding the problem of trying to make a perfect beurocracy in a country that has free speech that can manage the money. And it's a way better approach than some kind of public financing of campaigns. Give the humans the choice. It would be like a new American right. You have a right to 100 dollars worth of influence as a citizen. It's a very elegant concept.

Healthier countries have far more political parties than the dysfunctional and divisive duopoly in the US. That alone should say a lot to Americans. If that isn't enough, consider how close Trump was to installing an authoritarian government. Where countries have 6, 10, 17 parties that shit won't happen and people tend to be better represented. A duopoly causes serious tribalism where each party is focused on blocking the other, while the people get little to nothing in the end. Yang totally gets it. He looks for practical solutions that work and he doesn't care for conventional ways that clearly have failed consistently over time.

"It's indicative of something". Yep, it's tribalism. Progressives go after Yang if they are too caught up in the tribal mind control caused by narrow minded echo chambers like watching too much TYT and forgetting to look at 99.999999999999999999999999999999% of the rest of reality. I've been there (although to a lesser extent than much of what I'm seeing now), so I hope Progressives don't take my constructive criticism the wrong way. I was wrong (part of the problem) and I realized it. I just want to help people get out of this trap if they don't have the same strong (inherent to personality type) logic to (eventually) pull themselves out of it. If people are inherently biased to their emotions it's going to be next to impossible for them to realize it on their own. Even for my own (logical) self it really took someone smarter (Yang) to fully realize the errors I was making. I used to really trigger Trumpers in my comments, but even though I still speak my mind completely openly, Trumpers no longer come at me with: "you moron" or "you Idiot" and wish a bunch of bad things will happen to me.
I say the same with a little more tact in phrasing and with a little more common respect for my fellow human beings. It makes a huge difference in how we communicate our message to others. I always knew this to some degree, but I became a true believer when I witnessed time and time again how Yang deescalated unnecessary confrontations. I'm sure everyone realizes that all communication is lost at this point. The moment we are triggered we stop listening and start resenting the person which triggered us. Even if it is on our shortcomings. This is why we have to be aware of when we allow ourselves to be triggered due to our own emotional biases. Logic doesn't get triggered. It just looks for rational and practical solutions. It's our friend and it's society's friend. We need more logical thinking and much less emotional reactiveness. The latter is destroying us (society).

Andrew Yang said that he was registered Democrat for most of his life. The conversation here leans towards the Democratic Party. All three live in highly populated areas. I live in Dillon Montana. Rural. The citizens of the City of Dillon, the county, Beaverhead County, the state, Montana are largely registered Republican. I am originally from Maryland and was registered Democrat. I don’t have to register with a political party in Montana. I am quite critical of both parties, but I see strengths in both of their arguments. I routinely throw away all campaign literature from both parties and have requested removal from both their mailing lists. This includes email mailing lists. Each party demonizes members of the opposing party. Each party cries ‘wolf’ or ‘the sky is falling.’ I am supportive of Andrew because he is the only person offering something other than insanity.

I'm on board with Andrew Yang's movement (and new party) though give it less than even odds of success. Where I, and I suspect many others, would be tested in loyalty is in the Nader 2000 situation. The Forward Party would likely draw votes away from the Democrat candidate and enable the nightmare of a further 4 years of Trump (or other authoritarian demagogue). Is that worth it?

What is the advantage of combining open primaries with ranked choice voting? Doesn't one basically obviate the other? Primaries are also a private "thing" within the parties themselves - they have no real function within a governmental election machine. Why not let the parties govern how they choose to back but leave ranked choice voting for the general, actual, elections?

The Libertarian party is where Andrew Yang and those that support him ought to look: First, it had ballot access in all 50 states in 2020: Second, the ideals professed by the Libertarians: social and political freedom with limited (Federal) government were obviously foremost in the minds of the Founding Fathers when they prepared the Federal Constitution. This does not deny serious limitations in the Libertarian party platform under its present and past leaderships.
With prudent planning, these limitations can be corrected. Conceptually, they require obedience to the Constitution in total: Foremost is requiring the Federal government regulate the value of money. This it can only do by it alone issue the nation's money. Simply in transferring this power to the Federal government and with a proper accounting practice will reduce that which is now cited as the national debt: from $18 trillion to less than $4 trillion; and in doing so, pass $12,000 to each electorate. Mr. Yang has already shown the sociological national value of a $12,000 annual UBI.
The study from which this was drawn was passed to Jill Stein at the Green party’s 2016 National Convention in Houston.

@Firefly fly Points to be considered are the advancement of soluble solutions toward the goal of Depolarization. As you imply, there is nothing per se to dissuade Individuals from returning to hyperpolarized perspectives. What Mr. Yang proposes are steps to realign Congressional incentives to appeal to Majority of Constituents rather than persist within the duopolistic status quo. I look forward to reading the copy of Forward that should arrive later today from when it was pre-ordered several weeks ago before the news broke of his Forward Party launch. Therefore, having greater context of the perspective to enhance my own. Happy to discuss; cheers!

It's interesting that within the realm of ideas, the idea of UBI gets ignored as Marshall points out, because 'nobody' knew who Yang was. So this compelling idea never gets publicly discussed or explored because the person is unknown. Isn't that completely ass backwards for an advanced society? Doesn't the idea lead the way and the person's notoriety follow? I mean what do you have to do to get an idea out there, get a spot on a moronic reality show where you fight naked with hand-made spears on a tropical beach (which isn't that much different in spirit than a presidential primary, turns out) so your name gets known before you can talk about your ideas? Really, is that the best way to move a society forward? Hey, here's a crazy idea that will never get seen (cause who the hell am I), how about we lead with ideas?

Does Marshall not believe in statehood for Puerto Rico? Why?
We were annexed in 1898, and then made US Citizens from birth since 1917. The Federal government made sure that we had a state constitution that was compatible with the nation's.
Essentially, we are a jurisdiction of US citizens that is no longer happy with the current arrangement, and has voted multiple times in favor of having the same rights and responsibilities as other citizens.
PR wouldn't be a safe red or blue state. That's unwritten, really. Our current non-voting delegate to Congress is Republican, and would probably win one of the Senate seats if she were to run in the future. But like in any other place, parties would have to recruit good candidates to win.
If you believe in democracy and in citizens having the same rights and responsibilities, then you shouldn't be against statehood.
