Got this job to do for a friend. Thank you for saying the threads were 5/16 in the flywheel. Now I know what bolts to take with my puller!

  • @donyboy73

flywheel is not threaded on. spray a lot of penetrating oil and let it sit for a few days or you might have to heat it. always wear safety glasses in case something snaps

@BriggsMower "silver" sockets are hardened and can be prone to shattering / breaking when being used with an impact gun, the black impact sockets are not hardened in the same way plus there a LOT thicker than chrome sockets and are less prone to shattering. if you get hit in the face or eye with chrome socket bits from one breaking its a strong chance of blinding you.

So nice to see someone use a puller instead of a prybar and hammer. Really professional for sure.

  • @billskis
    @billskis 11 лет назад +2

I did it this afternoon with just a breaker bar & 15/16. I pushed a LOT of rope into the cylinder head, that bound it up pretty good. I tapped the bar a couple times, then a good firm pull, off it came. No rust at all on the threads, don't think any penetrating oil is necessary.

  • @billskis

Hey dog, it sounds like the problem I had - it was the flywheel key. It put the timing just a little off. When the starter motor turned, it hit the high spot on the cylinder and the peak of the magnet, which pretty much makes it immoveable. So it's not your battery. You need the pin to get it into alignment. Pull the flywheel and replace the pin.

  • @billskis

Most automotive supply stores have a tool loaner program. You can "rent" a puller from them, and use a box end wrench while tapping on the top of the center bolt.

  • @Peter-pv8xx

I've exhausted all methods and the flywheel won't budge, I tried the prybar underneath and hitting the bolt with a hammer, the air chisel down the crankshaft with the prybar, the pulled which succeeded in snapping one bolt off in the flywheel which I still have to drill out, I haven't yet tried voodoo or an exorcism but that may be next, this is on a 9hp brings engine on a snapper riding mower, I need to replace the ring gear, if all else fails and it has I might resort to grinding it off and getting a used flywheel.

Without an impact gun, I've had success with a puller cranked up tight (or a pal with a crowbar SAFELY lodged under the flywheel), and with 2 heavy hammers: one against the side of the flywheel, hit the other side a sharp quick blow. Stay high on the side of the flywheel- so the force travels across the top.

Hi Dony, I have a MTD ride on mower with a 11HP Briggs and Stratton. The engine starts, but does not keep running. Then the battery goes weak and fails to turn the engine over. (I am thinking of connecting a larger battery). Is there some way I can check that the charging system is charging. May be by pulling the spark plug out and turning the engine over with rope with a volt meter across the battery terminals. Would I see the volts go up. Or would the meter be too slow to see any change?Thank

Dony, How do you adjust the torque on your impact wrench? I've had 3 keys break as soon as I turn my ignition on. I was told not enough torque, and the specs says 100 ft/lb. I know I did more than that and still my keys broke. I bought an impact wrench like yours ( 300 ft/lb ) max. I don't know what else it could be since there's no binding when I turn it by hand.

Those things are fragile so how to answer you? Not to make hard feelings but chances are - you have a blown fuse - a wire somewhere broke internally - the heat - then cool - then freezing - then heat - then cool - then really REALLY hot - then cool -then freeze -- then heat - then remove and install = issues period. You're lucky if it works at this point. Pull everything back off - take FINE sand paper and go over the electrical - modules [ for lack of a better word] chances are you will be spending money on a charger or a repair of the charging system. Check all wires that they are getting electric through them - then clean everything put it back together - still not working - after checking - key - wires - fuses - - then just replace

What is that half circle thing called that was underneath the flywheel? Is that what is supposed to keep the battery charged? I have a Scotts S2046 with what I believe is a similar type of engine and it's always had a probably starting from day one. When it was delivered it wouldn't start until I charged up the battery and then while it was still under warranty they changed the solenoid at least twice and I've had to replace the battery like three times so I'd really like to get to the bottom of this. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

it's a stator to charge the battery, you tractor may need the valves adjusted if it's an OHV engine, ruclips.net/video/T1anxdNWf5Y/видео.html

It's only hard to start because every time I go to start it the battery is dead or very depleted.

So know the question is, since I don't have a flywheel puller nor air impact set - do I get a puller and borrow my neighbors impact set, or just give up and call Ball Equipment? lol
