    Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. We are so happy to have created this little community that is just as unhinged as us when it comes to music 🤪

    In light of the recent breakup, I believe YOYOK was a way of prepping herself to leave this relationship. She had to remind herself that she was always strong and achieved a lot on her own. It's difficult to end a long term relationship and doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes you just don't remember who you were before this relationship and don't know how you're going to live without your significant other. Everything about YOYOK screams to me 'yes, you can finish it girl, you can go on without him, on your own, as you have done before'. It probably took her months if not years to finally dare to leave this relationship and prepare herself mentally for it.

    The thing that makes me so sad about the Lover/Midnights connection is that she literally says in Daylight: “I want to be defined by the things that I love, not the things that haunt me in the middle of the night.” That leads me to believe 1) the problems were there the whole time (i.e. Archer, Afterglow, etc) and she was just choosing to look past them for the sake of love and 2) she changed her mind. Or the issues got bad enough that now, she decided that she COULD be defined by the things that haunt her in the middle of the night and still be okay. And now Midnights is literally one of her most successful albums ever, a career defining album! What an evolution.

    my heart breaks for her whenever i listen to Dear Reader and that part where she says "you wouldn't take my word for it if you knew who was talking, if you knew where i was walking, to a house, not a home, all alone, cause nobody is there". I guess she thought we wouldn't take her advice on anything anymore because she was going through a breakup and how most of her songs about how everything works out in the end were about Joe, like long story short or call it what you want, like she had gone on and on about how all that had happened to her didn't matter anymore because she had found her true love, the 1, and now, that she's lost him as well, those songs have lost their meaning. i really hope she knows how much we still look up to her for choosing herself in the end, in a way i'm pretty sure she does because she gave us You're Losing Me

    the very thing that breaks me the most about you’re losing me is that despite everything, despite the relationship already having come to an end in so many ways, she still uses the continuous tense of “losing”. not you LOST me but you’re losing me, in that she’s giving everything she has to keep this alive, that even in the “death” of their love (i can’t find a pulse my heart won’t start anymore), she’s still giving him a chance to save it (even when she knows he won’t, or really in the end it won’t really make a difference because it’s too late…) 💔

    can we refathom labyrinth and the alcott after the breakup? because they both feel to me like she was trying to break up with him and he would just come again and make her fall in love again, just "oh oh im falling in love again, i thought the plane was going down, how'd you turn it right around"?? at first of course i thought she meant she was getting over someone else and he made her fall in love, but NO, she was talking about HIM the whole time!! "I'LL BEEN GETTIN OVER YOU MY WHOLE LIFE??" thats joe definitely, and having the Alcott in context too, "it's the last thing you wanted, it's the first thing i do, i tell you i think im falling back in love with you"? "i'll ruin it all over, and over LIKE I ALWAYS DO" "EVERYTHING THATS MINE IS A LANDMINE"? "GIVE ME SOME TIPS TO FORGET YOU"? she definitely had a hard time breaking up with him FOR REAL god this is just - and to end it all with YOU'RE LOSING ME omg im crying again

      So I've had this fathoming today under a labyrinth reaction and bc I just got a notification for this comment and it kinda connects I thought I'd share if you're interested
      at first i took this as someone falling in love after their heart has been broken (several times maybe) by other people but something, in my opinion, did not quite fit so i thought about it more and now i think it is about someone falling for their partner again after thinking the relationship was about to end...
      i also love how many parallels there are to other songs
      like the (lyrical) parallels to you're losing me that i am currently fathoming actually kind of make me think of another interpretation but first the parallels/connection:
      the heartbeaty sounding production/ the heartbeat
      everybody just excpects me to bounce back/always rising from the ashes
      i thought the plane was going down how'd you turn it right around/ til' we were to far gone to bring back to life?
      the fact that i connect the lines as you see above actually kind of makes me say: what if Labyrinth was her writing about what she wished would happen, she wished he would turn the plane right back around somehow... but it didn't happen or it was a slight hiccup in their relationship they got over (second interpretation) until the final blow broke them to the point of no possible repair...
      Plus I'll be getting over you my whole life/ moving on was always easy for me to do it hits different this time (or 'cause its you)
      well anyways back to labyrinth, i dont know if other also feel this way but the production reminds me of the archer and other songs of hers that convey anxiety through their production, however there is a slight difference, with the archer for example one always waits for some kind of release because the production seems to just keep on building up to nowhere but with labyrinth i feel there is some kind of release of said anxiety in the outro because the fear of the break up/falling out of love she thought was near didn't happen because the plane was turned back around and she is falling in love again even though the chorus just keeps repeating over and over at the end the last lyrics we hear are "you know how much i hate that every- you know how much i hate- " those lines are in the song but not in the lyric video and Taylor is really amazing at finding the perfect deliberate way to end a song and it doesn't really sound like it is fading out, we are just moving away from it but the overthinking proceeds which juxtaposes the release in the production and puts the song back in line with the other "anxiety songs" (as i like to call them) like ootw & the archer which show anxiety through production most prominetly...
      in conclusion a re-fathoming makes sense

  • @emily12102
    @emily12102 Год назад +38

    ''I gave you all my best me's'' also in the sense that she has changed several times in the course of their relationship. Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore and finally Midnights are not just musical eras, Taylor's style and appearance, her vocabulary and personality have changed almost every two years since she and Joe started dating. She has shown him so many different facets of herself, as if to prove to him that it is never boring with her because she has so many different me's to offer and is willing to give him all of them. But reinventing yourself over and over again only to get the feeling that you're not getting enough back can get tiring in the long run.
    Perhaps the line where she compares herself to a Phoenix that gets tired despite rising from the ashes also refers to that. That she has simply become tired from the constant reinvention, when he just stays the same as he was in the beginning and shows not even no effort to give her his best sides but actually ignores her when all she wanted was for him to see her.
    And while Midnights isn't necessarily about the breakup with Joe, in that context lyrics like 'he stayed the same all of me changed like midnight' could at least have been inspired by Joe and fit well with the narrative of You're losing me.

    • @Eragon2679
      @Eragon2679 Месяц назад

      I think that reinventing thing was more for the fans though, if you fall in love with someone you usually want them as they are, you don't expect them to change themselves every few years. Also i'm kind of over the whole "looking what the boyfriend made wrong, which caused the break up" stuff. Either she had faults of her own, or she has a terrible taste in men (i can't think of a better term rn), i don't believe that all 9 break ups i remember were exclusively the fault of the boyfriends (Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer are the only ones were i could buy it), yet they always get all the blame by the fans, that doesn't sit right with me. John, Jake, Joe Alwyn and Matty all received death threats from swifties.

    The biggest hidding in plain sight was the lighter. In an interview, before Midnights, Joe said he had a lighter collection. The fact that she is holding a lighter in the cover, and he stated and one of the things he can't live without, its incredible.
    What a Mastermind indeed. It was always about Joe, she was telling us that in that cover. I need to recover now, what a great breakdown.
    I also relate to You're Losing Me, and I don't think you are wrong. Like Taylor, for my mental sake, I decided I was the problem and ended it. Because it was so painful to drag along something that isn't working and in the end it does more harm than good. I don't think we are reading too much into the song. She must have felt like this as well.
    Honestly good for her, go be a pop star Taylor, no one deserves pain and heartbreak.

    The more I listened to Midnights, the more it sounded like the precursor to a break-up and that's the puzzle piece we were missing. We lacked the context of what was happening in her relationship (not that it's any of our business), but once we had that knowledge, it became a breaking up album for me. To me, it was someone laying awake at night questioning the complexities of their relationship and their fame/career/public persona, and how these areas of their life collided, and what it meant going forward. It was someone clinging onto something because they weren't ready to let go, but knew deep down that something had died or was dying. With the addition of 'you're losing me' this becomes an absolute heartbreaker because she thought she finally found the one, only to slowly come to the realization that her relationship was falling apart.

    Refathoming Maroon: We thought it might be a more mature look at a relationship from Red era bc maroon is a deep red but now I’m thinking that it’s about Joe and that’s it’s called Maroon bc red was the color of her worst heartbreak til that point but now she needs an even darker color to express this new level of pain. “Rust that grew between telephones could refer to him not being there while filming and that communication breaking down. She's out late at night, sad about her current relationship's downfall, Mentally she is thinking back into her past to try to make sense of things, she's in plain sight - out at the bar, sad, she's also in plain sight of the fans - by writing and giving these songs to us (She can't figure out what's going on in her life, but she can write a song about it). I've loved Dear Reader from the start and I think people are finally starting to get it and how meaningful it truly is!

    The way I think of snow on the beach now is that it’s very beautiful and unbelievable in the moment and you get so caught up in that feeling that you forget that the snow won’t last. It also reminds me of lyrics on red where she says “you and I fell like an early spring snow” which also won’t last as the season gets warmer and “I still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell” which is a similar idea that the snow (a metaphor for a relationship) was so beautiful as it fell, but is ultimately still falling just like the relationship

    I’ve always found the cover art of the album interesting and this video made it click for me. As Bonny said, the lighter is the fixation, or the thought that is keeping her up at night. Well, Joe once did an interview where he talked about his favorite things and one of them was a lighter. He said even though he doesn’t smoke, he always carries a lighter. When the album launched I immediately thought the lighter was a symbol for him, but it didn’t make as much sense until watching this video and reframing it as an album about their relationship falling apart. Now I get it.

    I phantomed the lyric "you say I don't understand and I say I know you don't" differently... To me, it feels like something taylor would tell joe during the "final blow", the break up... I think she might have said something like "I can't be with you anymore" and in response he said "I don't understand" and she answered "I know you don't"... And then the rest of the song explains how Joe never picked up the signs of her getting hurt throughout the relationship, and how he didn't understand why she would want to end things

    Re-watching this and can't help but link the 'asshole outlaw' reference in Hits Different with Cowboy Like Me, seeing as the word cowboy is often interchangeable with outlaw. Always finding it easy to move on quickly and never finding a real connection, until it came to this one relationship. The end of this particular relationship is the one to make someone feel as if 'Forever is the sweetest con' and that they are 'never gonna love again'. Before the relationship even began, there was the knowledge that it would hit different if it were to end - 'We could be the way forward and I know I'll pay for it'.

    There are definitely twists and turns for this era. There's so much layers to Midnights and you're losing me definitely is the ultimate twist that changes the whole context of this era. Its a whole journey that TS brought us with, like a book with a shocking ending is what I feel. Dear reader is like a forewarning or foreshadowing of what this whole ass book journey really is about. 3 am was getting to the bottom of things. Til Dawn is the revelation from all the reflections. Then Daylight begins again like a brand new morning, and she falls in love again like a Lover! Its all a cycle, these albums. Rep is a night album as TS said. Then Midnights. And she said Lover album was almost called Daylight. Its complete now. Just like Spring summer is Folklore, and fall winter is Evermore. TS really is a mastermind.

    you guys were talking about how lover was potentially going to be called daylight and now we have midnights and how they’re almost polar opposites and midnight rain came immediately to mind, the “he was sunshine, i was midnight rain” which had me going through the lyrics again because even after all of this i never really felt that the song was about joe but when you really look into those lyrics, especially now that we sort of know that HE was the one that didn’t wanna marry her, the lyrics in that song feel sort of like she was kind of regretful in a way? that she did not accept the life the person the song was about was offering her, you know? especially in all of verse 2, more specifically in the lyrics “all the love we unravel, and the life i gave away” because she probably knew that now she would never get that life with joe and then going on to finish the song with “i guess sometimes we all get just what we wanted” and then “some kind of haunted” makes me feel like her choosing of words in “i guess” is very telling of an uncertainty that that was what she really desired? or maybe at the time she really only wanted to step up in her career but with all of this reminiscing she’s actually like “i fucked up and now this life i saw through this deep portal and this postcard is not achievable anymore.” really fucked me up honestly

    • @leo-pf3fk
      @leo-pf3fk Год назад +10

      also i interpreted the whole ”and i wouldn’t marry me either, a pathological people pleaser who only wanted you to see her” a bit sarcastic as well, and i kinda broke the 3 phrases like- her saying she wouldn’t marry herself either is agreeing with him because he probably said that to her once But also i take the “a pathological people pleaser” as even more sarcasm because it could’ve been him saying that to her as well and she’s kinda quoting him on his reasoning for her wanting to go back into the spotlight and potentially “ruining” the relationship therefore him not wanting to marry her. And then ending it with “who only wanted you to see her” feels more like she’s actually deconstructing that idea he had of her like i’m a people pleaser for YOU. You are the one i always really want to please and you’re just not making any effort so im always going by your “rules” (the whole privacy thing and not being able to be more open about their relationship)

  • @lea7027

    I still feel that Midnights was deeply connected to her process of re-recording her albums and maybe that’s what helped her processing and breaking down her relationship. She must have fathomed a lot of things in her current relationship while re-recording her songs about previous ones and maybe she actually figured out who she truly is/ want to be. I think she must have done a lot of introspection and fathoming during this process of immersing herself in previous eras

    Backstage at night 1 of Rep Tour Arlington, Taylor told Ryan Hurd that she loved his song Love in a Bar because it was especially meaningful to her relationship with Joe.
    In an interview he said "[Taylor] said, 'I love that song' and something about her and her boyfriend and referenced my song and I was like, 'That’s so cool.'"

    Taylor could also see it as she was willing to sacrifice her spotlight for him as a people pleaser. In relationships people pleasers often feel less satisfied and feel as though we are giving more of ourselves, when in reality the other people may have healthier boundaries. We expect people to change, because we so easily change to please others.

While he was out building other worlds (making movies) the whole blankets over barbed wire links back to the barbed wired & wool in invisible string, using her best colors for his portrait (she painted him as the hero in all the songs about him). he just never made her his world aka he wasn't ever going to wear a "I ❤ TS" shirt, like ever. And I think she wanted a bit of him making her his whole world but he's just not that person. plus it's a track 5 and I'm of the belief that it's way more personal than was initially thought. anyway, i always love your breakdowns and can't wait for your Speak Now TS vid

But then I kind of took it to mean like she moved on easily in *comparison*. Even though it was hard for her to move on from breakups with whole albums about them, even though it was hard for her to move on from revenge fantasies in all regards (Kanye, Scooter, even “nothing I do better than revenge”), even though moving on from all those things was so hard, they were easy for her in retrospect compared to the devastation of trying to move on from the longest relationship she’d had with the one she thought would be forever 😢

    I also think You’re loosing Me has a little connection to Exile. We have Taylor in a lot of songs going through her insecurities at the beginning of her relationship with Joe, that’s why I think Exile is something that came up in one of those fights when they’re at this point that they have been years into the relationship. Where Joe opened and talked about his insecurities and also so afraid of their then figurative break up. We think it’s a poetic choice that Taylor replies to him, but why if it’s a recollection of a fight? “I never learned to read your mind / you never learned to read my mind”. That line makes me think soooo much in the first verse of You're Loosing Me. There is so much speculation that they had some kind of pact that she wouldn’t give their fall out the same treatment as their previous ones, so in Exile the line “I think I’ve seen this film before and I didn’t like the ending” goes for both Joe because he would be in the same position of her exes, and the relation of movies, just like in Karma with “the guy on the screen” and all the other songs referencing his job. “I’m not your problem anymore” relates to Peace and in You’re loosing Me “I know my pain is such an imposition”. Also his fear that she moves on quickly, she mentions in Hits Different that it’s not the same because ITS JOE, but at that time he observed how fast she got over Calvin Harris and Tom “And it took you five whole minutes to pack us up and leave me with it”. Exile has so much more related, but this has made me reflect in all of their "sad songs” that co-wrote together.

Maybe this is already a thought out there, can't keep up with the analysis 😊

    With “you’re loosing me” I think that the heartbeat sound kind of sound like the heartbeat is being monitored in a hospital as if something is about to die… and then when the heartbeat stops at the end of the song, it really truly STOPPED, and the relationship has died. Also, at the end of the song, I like the clever way her backing vocals of the chorus like “stop…” as soon as she says the way “start” in the line “my heart won’t start again…” it’s almost as if in the moment in time, just before the last “my heart won’t start again, for you”… right before it all ends, the two contradictions (the relationship ending vs the relationship coming back to life) exists at the same time.

    LOVED this whole fahtoming, you both really articulated exactly how I'm feeling about Hits Different and You're Losing Me and how they both really explain Midnights as an album!!
    I kind of see Labyrinth, Snow on the Beach and Sweet Nothing as connected after hearing You're Losing Me - that part of a long-term relationship breakdown where there's a moment of change and suddenly you feel familiar and in love again, and have hope that maybe things can change and you can work it out. They SOTB and Labyrinth both especially have a kind of sense of trepidation/wonder/awe about them that makes me feel like she's really trying to grasp at those moments that feel so right to distract from how wrong everything feels most of the time. So I think it's not just reminiscing on early days - it might be more like, "this is breaking down, but suddenly you've said or done something that's so YOU and I'm in love all over again, but I'm scared to be - it doesn't feel safe anymore". It's also part of what's confusing to maybe both of them, and adding to the indecision of what they should do next, because even when you are falling out of love with someone, you have moments of looking at them and thinking that there couldn't possibly be anyone better.

    In you’re losing me the “always rising from the ashes mending all her gashes" is the same beat as "barefoot in the kitchen sacred new beginnings" from Cornelia street 😢
