It is interesting that there are 2 versions of Irish soccer on the Island of Ireland divided on sectarian lines. One in Belfast and one in Dublin, The FAI and the IFA. You even have the unusual situation tha Derry City FC plays in the League of Ireland, with teams from the Republic rather than in the Belfast based Northern Ireland league. Rugby and Gaelic organise their codes on an all Ireland basis reducing sectarianism as much as they can. Such divisions allow cultural divisions to happen but I do not see how you could possibly organise a united all Ireland approach to soccer on this island.

The IRA are part of Irish history which he appears to want to sanitise. Whether he wishes to acknowledge it, many nations sing songs about war. One man's army is another man's terror group and throughout history any action by the people of Ireland against occupying forces has been classified as terrorism. Songs will be wrote and sung as many nations have done. He should stop being offeneded of being Irish. I am pretty sure that all 10 people that watch the show will have an opinion

There are four times as many comments as there are likes. That says something 🇮🇪
Education in this context has connotations of political re-education in special camps. A way of forcing one political viewpoint on a subject populace. Practically every national anthem has references to a nation fighting for their freedom and "forming battalions" and "sending people victorious" or flags waving over the "land of the free and the home of the brave", hardly peaceful or compliant sentiments. The big problem is the use of the term "IRA" for both the old IRA from 1921 and the version from the 1970's and the current offshoots that exist to this day. Many people will have high regard for the 1921 version but contempt for the 1970's version. In time people will probably have mixed views about the 1970's version of the IRA, realising that the other side of the sectarian divide in the North was just as culpable of crimes as the IRA.
I think its interesting the song isn't really discussed in this video or many videos at all. We have this tendency to loop in the IRA and the derivatives that popped with letters attached somewhere. Due to this association and the closeness of Britan, both as a neighbor and governing body of part the island, along with the other factors, that we tend to look at IRA and go... "Condemn". The issue is of course as a nation, ROI owes itself to the founders of the IRA. It owes the freedom we enjoy to those people in the early 1900s. And this history is taught to children who consume it, they look at it. They hear the songs that celebrate these people. And then are told "Wait, you cant celebrate the IRA! They killed people." and most if not all will know of the PIRA and the RIRA and those other named groups. But because the songs they are singing don't reference anything they've done, they continue on against the authorities telling them to stop. Because to young people, its silly to combine the two groups as one.
The British killed plenty of Irish people too both on the ground via soldiers and through political agendas. As an Irishman who has lived in the UK most of my life I do not agree with violence in any form and terrorism is inherently wrong. That being said people in desperation are driven to serious actions. In respect to this song, anyone who has been to a football match will tell you the songs and language is generally unsavoury. Just how it is. Listen to the England fans for example.
The gentleman is correct. The UVF murdered many innocent Irish people in an horrific Dublin bomb explosion in 1974. Imagine if the Northern Irish women team, who recently qualified for the Euros, celebrated in their dressing room with UVF chants.? There would be widespread outrage, and rightly so.
Not sure who the man on the far right is but what about the death and injury to property in all of Ireland due to the British and loyalists in the 20th century and long before 🤷♂️

I know the song, not a fan of it. Most Irish in the 6 counties has suffered from violence and want to move on. A song is far better than bullets and deaths. What does anger me is these RTE Dublin 4 types and the looking down their noses at us. We are your betters, know your place. To them I say, shut up and enjoy your Mediterranean holidays. Stop talking down to those who pay your salaries with their taxes.
Seems to me that the entire argument about "to-sing-or-not-to-sing" isn't about partition and a united Ireland as much as it is about one's freedom to say/sing what one wants. This kind of social censoring is going on in many countries regarding many different issues, but at the end of the day, the question is: What can I say without being beaten around the head and shoulders for being a "hater"? That said, it would probably be nice to put one's self in the shoes of the other (on both sides).
Be proud of our history there are many many songs out there describing conflict in countries worldwide every night, never ever apologize for your heritage it is what makes us unique in many ways,no disrespect instead of interviewing coffin dodgers let the young people of Ireland have their views, indeed by the many thousands of comments they already have
I'm trying to recall - didn't The Wolfe Tones also record THE SASH ME FATHER WORE? I recall many years ago a FF politician got into some difficulty for singing a fine version! Much Ado About Nothing I'd say.
They did. It’s on their first record. The vast majority of their songs aren’t ‘rebel’ songs at all. Sod all make any reference to the Provisional IRA. The Wolfe Tones are tame compared to the Irish Brigade in that regard
I think context is important here. Football chants are never meant to be taken seriously. No Manchester United fan literally wanted anyone to die at Hillsborough, yet they chant that Liverpool fans should have all died at Hillsborough. Frankly the plastic republicans at Celtic are only doing most of this to wind up Rangers. It's easy to chant this stuff then go home to your safe little suburban British house, away from the peace walls and division. Context is important too. Before the early 1970s my mum, who grew up just outside Birmingham used to go to folk groups and singing songs about the Old IRA was normal. The troubles changed all that. Of course there is freedom of speech in Ireland, although the footballers were singing in Scotland which has different laws and history, but how people choose to exercise that freedom may well impact on the likelihood of unification in the future.

And no pope of Rome to name but one of many of their sick songbook.
It must be remembered that this song was embedded in soccer culture in Ireland through its adaptation to oo aa Paul McGrath helping it's popularity as it was such a simple adaption
What freedom , we fought for hundreds of years fighting to keep our identity and now we are in the EU,
We are told we have to keep our borders open so now everyone is coming to Ireland so we fought for nothing
That's all it's was simple as that

Irish Republican Army, the team needs to have that tune as their anthem 🇮🇪
It would appear the gentleman with the redhead isn't aware of his own history, the IRA were founded in 1919 which then split, becoming the regular army after 1922 and the anti- treaty IRA, irregular army.

Yeah, I mean, "Out yonder waits the Saxon foe, so chant a soldiers song" wonder what soldiers and what army that's in reference to 🤔

But what these politicians fail to see is that no matter what , when u get drinks in any irishman/irishwoman , you know fine well they become the most patriotic people and no matter their situation , will sing this song with all their hearts
What is the main group do we acknowledge that brought freedom of the present Republic?
why not concentrate more on the abuse and death threats james mc clean gets on a daily basis
Never be ashamed to be Irish.....
Free society? That's laughable
Can anyone explain this to an American? I cannot figure out what they did that is any different then what we've done and said here in the States, as a former British Colony, we sing a lot of offensive songs about hurting the British. I'd just assume all the other ex colonies had the same shared history. Why is Ireland any different then the States?
Not only that, but it’s been a part of Irish culture for YEARS to sing rebel songs, absolute fools trying to make it out to be a bad thing. And as you said, SO many countries sing songs like these, but because there’s still somewhat troubles in the North with the newfound IRA people are saying we shouldn’t sing songs that represent our history
There are four times as many comments as there are likes. That says something 🇮🇪
Plus the i r a was not formed in the 1920s know ur history war of independence was from 1919..
The youth don't care about idiotic moderatism. That's what the Government fears
As usual people telling us what to do.i will sing what I want when I want.
Could have been worse could have been Ireland's call
😂
Go ahead, call the tories
They can’t unbomb your cars
Its only a song not a bomb

The gentleman is correct. The UVF murdered many innocent Irish people in an horrific Dublin bomb explosion in 1974. Imagine if the Northern Irish women team, who recently qualified for the Euros, celebrated in their dressing room with UVF chants.? There would be widespread outrage, and rightly so.
Bit like the Famine song and the Fenian blood songs that Rangers fans sing every week.

Are British people desensitized to colonial violence, including flag burning by loyalists in NI ?
I know the song, not a fan of it. Most Irish in the 6 counties has suffered from violence and want to move on. A song is far better than bullets and deaths. What does anger me is these RTE Dublin 4 types and the looking down their noses at us. We are your betters, know your place. To them I say, shut up and enjoy your Mediterranean holidays. Stop talking down to those who pay your salaries with their taxes.
How come since the british left Ireland that the Irish left in their thousands for mother England and her colonies.
I disagree the world supports the Irish the only people who are worried about upsetting are the English.
Be proud of our history there are many many songs out there describing conflict in countries worldwide every night, never ever apologize for your heritage it is what makes us unique in many ways,no disrespect instead of interviewing coffin dodgers let the young people of Ireland have their views, indeed by the many thousands of comments they already have
So the English will start singing, would you like to have a cheeseburger Bobby Sands?
I'm trying to recall - didn't The Wolfe Tones also record THE SASH ME FATHER WORE? I recall many years ago a FF politician got into some difficulty for singing a fine version! Much Ado About Nothing I'd say.
They did. It’s on their first record. The vast majority of their songs aren’t ‘rebel’ songs at all. Sod all make any reference to the Provisional IRA. The Wolfe Tones are tame compared to the Irish Brigade in that regard
Answer. Yes.
Political correctness gone mad.
