This whisky is a real gem. Very affordable, very approachable, and mouth-filling deliciousness. Excellent review!

I still have a bottle of this in my cupboard that is pre-mothball stuff, bottled in 2013. I always found this to be my least favourite Glendronach, to be honest, I even find the Hielan to be better.
The 12 to me really has kind of a more austere character, substantial tannins, while lacking most of the sherry goodness the rest of the 'core' expressions have.
But that may have to do with the fact that Tim had mentioned, I only know the 12 year old as a pre-mothballed version, so my educated guess would be, that all the lesser quality casks went into that one, saving the goodies for the 15, 18 and 21, not to mention the single casks of course.
That may have changed for the better now. We'll probably give this one another go when the dark season has sneaked in.

I've always enjoyed the Glendronach 12 but never got round to buying a bottle. I'm coming to the end of a number of sherried expressions, including the similarly fine Benriach 12, so this one is lined up for a buy at long last. Entertaining review as always. Cheers

Bought one last year for our 10-day foray through Oregon and Washington. Bought something else too. I thought the whisky was very good, it was my first time and I had had the 15, 18 and 21. Nice review gents.

Very enjoyable review! Too many Scotch reviewers on You Tube are clowns and jerk offs. Thanks for the historical info also!

I just bought one the other week. It would have to be post mothball material now.

Just look it up. Beneath the labels, somewhere at the foot of the bottle is an imprinted bottle code.

So..."2017/04/19 13:10"... that's straightforward, I guess it's bottling date and time - so post mothball. Then "LL10257" what do you make of that ?

Maybe the batch number, for the distillery's internal identification of the specific casks that went into it.
But other than that, I have absolutely no idea :)

I tried a dram of this a few months back. Not sure if I like it or not at the time I wasn't keen. It tasted more like sherry than whisky. I think I prefer a more traditional whisky. Can you guys recommend a good straightforward quality whisky for my next purchase. Thanks guys. Enjoying your channel.

Sherry maturation is really the 'most' traditional, but certainly not the most conventional these days. I'd recommend Glenfiddich 12yo and Glenmorangie 10yo as good choices for straight forward and modern examples of quality whisky. We've reviewed them both too, so see what strikes your fancy.

The Single Malt Review thanks guys. I have watched those videos I've watched quite a few now. Both are very easy for me to get hold of. I think I might try the glenmorangie but might try the Quinta ruban or another finish. I think the Glenfiddich will be too soft for me as I'm used to drinking slightly stronger whiskies from 43% abv upwards. I might ask one of my friends or family members to buy me a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 for Christmas and drink it as an everyday drink.

If you like a stronger whisky then I'd also recommend a cask strength release, of which there are increasingly more available these days. The Arran 12yo cask strength is probably the best of what we've tried, but most of what we've encountered has been of fairly good quality. The good thing about these whiskys is that with a judicious addition of water you can drink them at whatever strength suits you.

The Single Malt Review thanks guys yeah I think I'll look into a cask strength whisky. I've got the arbeg uigedail which I really enjoy.

    Thanks for the fine review.
It was my understanding that the GlenDronach distillery was mothballed 1998-2006. If that is correct, then this year, 2018, would be the first time since 2010 that GD could offer a "true" 12 Y.O..
Similarly, the last, "true" 18 Y.O. would have been bottled in 2016, and the next will be possible in 2024.
    Yes? No?
    Am I deluding myself?

Being a disabled vet who lost his legs, I cant go to bars. I started drinking Scotch and tried Glennfiddich and Glennmorangie 18 extremely rare. Could anyone tell me how Glenndronach compares to Dalmore, McCallan, and Glennmorangie Quinta Ruban
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated for my next bottle. Thank you!

    • @TheSingleMaltReview
      @TheSingleMaltReview  6 лет назад

Glendronach is one of the very few heavily sherry matured single malts around, so there are very few that can directly compare to i's dark and rich flavour. In the past The Macallan was similarly matured, but it's been moving more into a lighter Bourbon matured style in recent decades. Dalmore is not too dissimilar, but not as well presented as Glendronach as most of that range is only 40%abv and chill-filtered. Quinta Ruban from Glenmorangie might be the most similar, as it's port cask finishing provides a good dose of that European oak influence.
      Hope that helps!
