This woman has extreme guitar grit, amazing musical headspace, and the utmost intellect to learn these historical tunes to pay homage to our guitar heros. I always said to myself that this song was EVH's greatest song writing accomplishments. The verse, pre-chorus and chorus riffs are dirty as hell and the guitar solo and breakdown is classic Van Halen. Nobody played guitar like that when this song came out. The pinched harmonics in the riff playing was totally new back then. Spot on Sophie 👍
Eddie first wrote this song on a Piano then translated it to guitar. Insane!
Agree completely. Unchained has always been my fav VH song. To me it has everything that makes a true VH classic.
Also, it's from a very underappreciated album, Fair Warning.

You are right about nobody had that sound. When I first Eddie's guitar for the first time I was 13 years old and thought to myself what the hell was that I just heard it totally blew me away . I miss Eddie so much he was the greatest of all time.

There are so many covers of Unchained that I almost didn't click on this. Glad I did. Great tone, perfect phrasing, and most of all; it shows that you love what you are playing. That transfers to the audience as sublime performance.

Eddie had such great grasp of the groove and vibe in a song. A true musician.

I'm extremely impressed that you mirrored Eddie's groove! So many VH songs have this groovy little swing to the rhythm phrasing. I think he learned this from his father Jan, who was a big band clarinet player. Well done!

This is excellent. A small critique which literally every guitar player who plays this song does. The flanger is only on for a small portion of the chugging. Eddie would literally turn it on and off during the song. Also I can’t believe you’re only 21 and such an accomplished player!!!
Yes exactly, that would also be my only critique, there's too much flanger and he would turn it on and off all the time just for the chug parts. But man this cover is so awesome anyway

A M A Z I N G. One of my fave VH tracks and you nailed it. We all rave about Eddie’s lead playing, but his rhythm playing is so overlooked and is often hard to play cleanly. It’s so sad he’s passed away.

The tone had too much sweep for me though.
That's because Eddie only had it turned on during certain parts of the riff. Shouldn't be hearing that much of the flanger.
