Dumog is very similar to English Catch-As-Catch-Can wrestling in it's approach to constant, overlapping locks/attacks, and the directions of always placing your opponent under as much stress as possible at all times. The British sailors were noted to have learned different grappling skills from their travels which they brought back to Europe and naturally filtered into the already impressive arsenal of skills of what would be later termed Catch-As-Catch-Can/Catch Wrestling when it began being promoted for competitions and shows. My wonder is how much historical exchange was there between the British and the Philippines?

Great video and very clear explanation Tuhon Leslie. I always had problems explaining to my students with grappling backgrounds that the “baseline” of dumog is another tool in the combative toolbox rather than sport. Solving a slightly different combative problem than ring, cage, mat scenarios.
Anyways.... Kudos to you my friend. Been a long time. Hope you and yours are well. Barry D

Nice video. Filipino Dumog has existed for so many years before the UFC was born. If you guys wanna see the original Filipino Dumog Arts then watch Dan Inosanto Dumog video on youtube.

Americans wouldn't have learned this martial art if they had not colonized the Philippines. From what I learned, even the Spanish had a great deal of problem against this fighting style. Americans simply absorbed it, used it since it was effective against them.

I actually had the opportunity to learn this with Jared one of main teachers of this style I joined with many solders though I am not one myself my father just happened to be one of his partners in teaching I even had the opportunity to meet the creator of this style and I have to say out of the many different styles I have learned this one I enjoyed the absolute most they trained with honor and they conditioned you well because I was on a military base they trained differently instead of having a minute to shake off pain you had to endure it I liked this concept because you were conditioned to being hit in the process that way by the time you are a master you can also take a blow since I know multiple different styles many people ask me to teach self defense but they are always most interested in this one I show them some things but since it was military training they focused alot on lethal tactics so when I demonstrate I just show a simple take down very rarely do I demonstrate lethal moves normally I only show to teachers or students who understand the danger and know to practically never do it this style has actually even made me a special guest in 2-3 different Martial art classes as well so if anyone out there is curious of learning this then I highly recommend it I am a well trained fighter of many styles but this one is my personal favorite out of all

Is Dumog merely theory and practice ? Or is there actual sparring involved to see it's effectiveness under more realistic and safety controlled situations? Such as the rolling of Judo or Jiu jitsu.

The term Dumog is often used by different styles to mean different things. The traditional Dumog of areas like Antique in the Philippines very much had a competitive, sport version like Judo and BJJ. In my understanding, the competition was / is more of a dirty wrestling, but the real application included more serious applications such as joint and neck breaking and even the use of poisoned fingernails. I think in most schools in the West, including ours, Dumog is taught with limited resistance and situational sparring drills, but not as a full competitive sport or with 100% resistance / open sparring. The common exception may be when dumog is applied during full contact stick sparring where takedowns, throws, trips, sweeps, etc. are allowed. We have had students apply the core technique in this video with nearly 100% resistance to be better prepared to apply the technique. It was this training that helped us recommend some of the variations above.
