- Is there a better story for a crashed car? No. No there isn't. While this Alfa Romeo GTV6 (one of the best looking Alfas ever - fight us if you disagree) might have been relegated to a rusty scrap heap in someone's backyard and scrubbed for spares, Chase Maurer had other ideas: like re-creating it into an homage to a French 80s production class racer. The world needs more people like Chase.

I love how excited he gets whenever Larry compliments his car
This guy seems really nice lmao and kudos to him for taking on a project like that
Double the kudos for not letting that car go to scrap. Those are such good cars.
Love it.....just love it.
I love the fact its only 150bhp, I bet its still an absolute blast on track
He should be able to get a bit more out of it, sounds really mean though, like double the horsepower 😁 love the Busso
@@delahayenator They were 156hp stock and respond well to tuning. Sounds lumpy so am guessing he's done cams...which you should not do without attending to compression..valves etc...These engines also came in 3ltr..in south Africa they had a gtv6 race series running them in 3ltr config. Modified 2.5ltrs are doing 190whp..3ltrs..270whp...4ltrs. 400hp with the quad cam Busso variant. Or boost it..my friends 3ltr 12v makes 520 flywheel hp on the street...and sounds amazing doing it...search alfa romeo gtv6 vortech. Superb if now dated motors.
@@buzzedo1 hi, yes very tunable. Had a tuned 2,5 12v in a 155, headers, cams, injectors and a reprogrammed ecu making almost 220hp. Ah i will look it up. I know the glenwood busso projects and some south african alfas. Australians also have some very nice and extreme twinturbo stuff.
@@delahayenator I'm Aus...and we sure do. My Alfetta GT has a 2ltr alfa motor with turbo and a supercharger which is entertaining. A mate has a blown 3ltr Busso which sounds glorious.
@@buzzedo1 Is your car that beautiful silver GT? I remember seeing a youtube clip of a GT with that setup. And the twin turbo Alfetta sedan with yellow valve covers also australian if i remember correctly
I will always upvote an Alfa video. Beautiful.
So happy to see this car on a Hoonigan channel! I love this car so much! My father has two of them and I building a rally version myself back in France! So much love and this car is really build! I just cringed when he called the magnificent Busso V6 a tractor motor 😂
That's so cool! I very jealous!
Cool! Yves Loubet hommage with the Rothmans livery? The Alpilatte livery is nice as well
my friend scott had two gtv6's. miss him a lot. r.i.p
Really cool a guy from Carolina digs into 80's european touringcarracing and builds this hommage to the fantastic group a gtv era! These cars were really succesful in europe africa and australia.
Those headers is a piece of art, just beautiful.
So happy for Chase to get some recognition for the cool shit he's been building!
As always thank you Larry. I really love seeing the not so normal or common car builds specially the more vintage ones. Alphas have always been one of those car that I had respect for and a small place in my heart. But to see this and to hear his back story with it just warms my heart and fuels my love for automotive culture. Imo this is a great way to show respect and love for the yesteryear in car culture. Then coupled with the fact that the car is functional and being used and enjoyed is just freaking wicked awesome imo. Again I dont care what kind of car or how much money. If you put love and passion into a car it shows and to me it shows true value. Simply put I love it. Thank you again Larry your the best.imo
Man I love everything about that car and this man's attitude! So much good vibes and joy while talking about his car, outstanding!
So gents, I love what you have done with my 2/3 scale GTV-6. And thanks for sharing it! I did crash it (lost brakes and had no where to go) about an hour after I got it out of the body shop. I hope that you are enjoying the other one also. God bless! Rich
That is a sad story. When the guy who owns it now said it was crashed while being driven home from the restoration garage, I thought, "Hmm, must have lost brakes." I had an '85 for 5 years or so in the early 2000s. Bought it with 43000 miles on the clock. Ran like a champ. Loved it. Wanted it from '81. Studied it for years. Finally pulled the trigger in 2000. Sold it to my mechanic when I moved out of state and was unable to scout out a new mechanic in my destination state.
The Busso V6 is one of the greatest sounding engines of all time, if not the greatest!
That GTV is absolutely astonishing...
One of the marvels of Arese...
Perhaps, one of the last real Anonima Lombarda Fabrica Automobili.
With the legendary "De Dion" rear axle and on board disc brakes, and transaxle for weight distibution.
Amazing the Marlboro colors, just like a McLaren MP4/4 1988 of Ayrton Senna.
You are THE MAN!!!
GTV-6 is one of the coolest cars ever. Awesome.
Best sounding 100 Hosres ever!!!
I’m so jealous right now. Love the car. This guy seems super chill
love to see how passionate this guy is about his project, so unique and fun
Busso concert! They can be really quick, won many championships during the 80s. Love it someone in the USA picked this up. The Snobeck style livery! The most epic one. Luigi Racing ran them as well and Colin Bond and Alan Jones raced these cars in Australia.
just read the title and already love the owner!
you did good !!! it's not a rare car here in Europ, but definitly is one of my favorite vintage car. This engine is so fantastic to make sound !!! thanks. The original Snobeck's was nearly 250BHP, so you can imagine how much fun it was, it was banned here some years ago as it's too loud, so it becomes hard to see it in action, my last time was in 2000 in Montlery, i miss it very much on the tracks.
Good Job from Italy , my fater had a Giulia 1300 super .
The GTV6 is an awesome Alfa, they won plenty of championships with this model in Europe/Uk. In Aus also it was a weapon. The 2.5 V6 is sweet, but to have a heap more power, the 24V 3.0 or even 3.2V6 is the way to go. The Busso V6 is the next best thing to a Ferrari engine.
I really the ''si tu freines, t'es un lache'' bumper sticker ! It translates to ''if you brake, you're a coward'' and it's a cool hommage to french racing history of the model ! I now understand better why i can find that decal on some alfa's here in France !
Very cool and unique
Fantastic build! Well done. Seems like a really nice guy.
Wow. What a cool blue Honda Jazz.
Supreme Alfa👍 nice built
I'm going to the Heacock Classic at VIR week after next. I see a GTV6 registered under the name Glenn Maurer. I'm guessing its the same car. I hope so because I look forward to seeing it.
I saw this car at a SVRA event at COTA a few weeks back. Amazing build.
Love it. Great resto. My dad had one. Biggest problem as he said, lot of flywheel and driveshaft mass, slow shifts with the clutch by the rear mounted tranny.
Very cool! My Alfa Spider is a 1984. It’s also a resto-track car with a shouty exhaust. Maybe I’ll bump into him on my track day rounds.
Proof you don’t need a built motor or tons of HP to have fun and go fast
I knew this car looked familiar, saw them at the Mitty this year. Road Atlanta FTW!!
Okay that does look like fun
Probably the only Alfa I’ve ever seen that I like granted I have not seen a lot of them
You are not a real car person if you don't like Alfa's (FACT!) 😂
Marlboro livery has to be the best and most iconic race livery ever.
I've been in love with these cars since they came out when I was a teen. Kind of irrationally, maybe. But definitely prettiest hatchback ever, in my book. :) (And, oh, there were more than 600 of them in the US by at least several thousand. A lot of them were given up on though cause people didn't know how to fix them. )
In South Africa we had a Limited number of 3.0 Gtv6 Alfas it was a homologation Edison to quilify for the racing Rules What makes it also unique is that it was only available in South Africa !! Ford had also had a homologation special The Sierra XR8 both cars was homologation models To race each other Both cars is unique & only build in South Africa !!!
I love these old fastback models, Lamborghini Espada, the old Maserati Ghibli, Lotus Elite, this thing here.
Well hearing the Busso motor refered to as a tractor motor..that's a disgraceful first! Car looks fantastic but you need your mouth water out with soap for that comment 🤣
love it, nice fabrication too
What a nice guy and a great car
Hell yea chase rules
Corey Corolla hahah much love bro
Back in the 80's and early 90's there was a GTV6 out of the Twin Cities area that was an ice racer. The story I heard was that those headers were designed using a decibel meter.
Most people just don't know how EPIC these Busso 6's are, some say THEE best 6's EVER made!
And this was early 80's Alfa technology.
Then our South African Dawie De Villiers saw its potential and decided to turbo the 3.0l version...
The rest is history... This engine produced OBSCENE POWER!!!
They battled and battled to get a clutch and gearbox to handle the power. They ended up with foreign parts... AND STILL COULDN'T GET IT RIGHT!!
TOO MUCH POWER!!
It just couldn't get traction!!
Spun in EVERY GEAR!!
People rave about the Nissan GTR turbo 6's power... THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE.
THIS CAR BLEW EVERYONE AWAY, IT STILL DOES!!
That kind of power has never been produced by a 6 again, why?... Cos it's bad for business, and money is the name of the game is it not... Sad.
Find out more about this car, the Glenwood twin turbo GTV 6 3.0L.!!!
PS... They brought Porsches specially prepared in Germany to take it on.... Porsche went back embarrassed and wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CAR!!!
God bless.
I have run 5 x 100 mm wheels on my GTV6 since I bought it 16 years ago. Never any problems at all. And you need to put your car on a dyno, it has more power than you think. The running gear is the same as the Alfa 75 (America) and those were also sold in the US so it may help for parts. There are still some good resources for these older Alfas in the US.
Seems like.murica didnt know shit about this alfa? Majestic busso called tractor engine?haha. With 50/50 weight distribution, front engine rear transmssion, inboard mount rear disc. what GTR and LFA did, alfa romeo done it decades earlier. Such an awesome car.
Larry I think it's time to get an official AutoFocus pointer :-)
Wow
Hey! I know that guy! Fuck yeah Chase ❤️
Great car and great attitude, sounds bitchin'!
Yeah those rare cars like my st185 are worth saving. I could have spent 5k more for a perfect car but this one woulda been a scrap parts car. Out of 1870 sold in usa who knows how many are left so yeah The Alfa and my car are 100% worth saving
It is wierd that today i was watching a gtv6 hillclimb video and this pops up
Ken Michigwan It’s like RUclips is tracking everything you’re watching...
@@LarryChenPhoto Hahahahhahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@LarryChenPhoto L😂L!
Sweet find!
Beautiful beard win! :)
Fun little racer. Nothing crazy.
Awsome gtv6, nicely built . They are awsome cars i own 6 of them, they are starting to become popular now finnaly.
Forget Alfa. Checkout that beard!

These are old engines but even so they can make over 100HP per lt in race trim and are still be quite streetable at those power levels when built properly and upto 110-120HP per LT in full race trim. They can also be bored and stoked to nearly 4l displacement.
i like the full grown tommy ,and the finger
The GTV6 is the best looking car AR has ever built
This was a real alfa
I had a 1985. It was a fun car
This Is one of my dream cars
Love this car!
Cool & different build dood. Its just begging for Mo Powa Baa Beh! Turbo VR6, 2JZ, 1MZ...
Hope one day you drop a tuned 3.2L busso in it to unleash full potential
Nothing was faster than this car in FIA group A 2500cc class in the early and mid 80s. It won many champioships in its class in ETCC, DTM, BTCC, ITCC, rally and overall championship winner in French Production Championship 2 years in a row.
Bella bella, greetings from Italy ✌️
Most Alfa's of the 90's/early 2000's also had 5x98 lug patterns. Make it hard for me to find wheels for my 147😂
I only know about the GTV6 from my many years of watching Top Gear/The Grand Tour lol
Real sports cars focusing on the weight, car's real enemy. Braking late before the apex is more exhilarating than powering out of the corner.
Gtv has a long history of racing in south Africa. 3.7, high revving bussos
I don't know how I feel about the Mickey Mouse glove pointer. Something more Tinkerbell would evoke directionality, inspire confidence and provide light.
Martin D
I could not agree more.
Same
I LITERALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A WRAP.... I THOUGHT TO MY SELF... "THAT'S A WRAP!"
Cool car!! Amazing history! Just a tip, get the fly-wheel and prop shaft from a 75 (Milano for you), it's a simpler sistem, but keep the GTV6 gear box!!!
Plus, the hole between spare tire and original fuel tank is designed for the exaust, it' weird to see that hole empty hahaha
Love what you've done! Alfa!!!!
What’s your all time favorite Motorsports livery?
Lancia Martini
Herbie the love bug 🍻🐈🔥🐞
I love the Falken fresh mint with blue
The Malboro livery of course.
@@Cekmore nah bro mystery machines where it's at
ive never seen this car before thought it was some old beemer lol
Jeremy Clarkson had one of this I think and he was saying it was one of his favorite sounding cars, he totally regretted selling his. Tractor motor, c'mon guy.
In the second series of the grand tour he reviews another gtv6 and ends up owining it. His favourite car of all time
I follow their channel. really awesome build. you can fit a 3.0-3.2 in there. with higher compression, cams, easily 250hp. should still be legal for SVRA..? Also, 5x98 is very common for Alfas.. even to this day.. Alfa and Lancia.. Lancia Delta Integrale..16V.. 5x98..
Hope you got a photo in the water spot
There so many of these coming into LeMans Paint&Body of Santa Monica back in the 80s. Every one one them smashed in the front.
These guys need a group A engine for that car 250HP+ and a sound that makes your pants tighten.
Fantastica alfa romeo GTV 6 io ne ho una ciao bellissima
did i hear right 100whp? Oo
Best v6 ever made. Somebody tag Jeremy Clarkson hahaha
Omg old alfas....
Yup
Alright Larry where'd you get the pointer stick lol I need one!
you absolutelly need to import 3.2 liter 24 valve version of this busso v6 engine. It has 250hp and fits right in.. mounts, bellhousing, everything. Only thing you would need to figure out is an engine management
LoL, no. Some have done it yes, but they will also tell you the mounts and bellhousing are about the only parts that "fit right in". Exhaust, cooling, oilpump, intake, flywheel? No.
@@patjo553 what are you talking about? If that guy was able to build the car to this state some custom exhaust headers are not going to stop him. Intake plenum can be used from 24v.. Not ideal as throttle body will be facing firewall, but it fits. Flywheel fits without any modifications as 12v and 24v have same crankshaft, just different stroke. Also cooling needs no modifications as termostat housing from 12v can be transfered to 24v and then it fits like factory. 24v oilpan also fits so there is no need to mess with oil pump.
or you build the 12v to 300 hp, we are running 280hp to FIA with restrictions..the power is there, without restrictions there is 300+ on the 12v...engine management is Motec.
@@Edd5hott79 For sure that is possible. But that is whole another level of complexity than swapping 24v. Not sure if you are running turbo or NA. If NA, then 300hp is absolutelly amazing with 12v . As stock 12v intake is really restrictive and also 12v dont really like revs with that janky lifter system. 24v heads are just so much superior. I would be interested what redline are you running if you are pushing 300hp NA. Im not familliar with FIA restrictions
@@genius3258 "Fit right in". "Everything". Anyway, cranks are not the same but flywheel will fit if you source longer bolts with thread of the 24v but you will still need to rebalance the entire rotating as well as reciprocating mass. The 24v oil pan does not fit the car and the 12v oil pan does not fit the 24v oil pump. Lose the 24v oil pan and you lose the crank sensor, oh no, you lost the trigger wheel with the 24v flywheel. Crank sensor probably interferes with steering rack anyway, I never got far enough to check. Thermostat is in the wrong end of the 24v, unless you are looking at one from a 164 which it is starting to sound like, same-ish oil pump as 12v on those but crank driven on later 24v. Electric throttle body with 3.2 24v, brake servo interferes with 24v heads. Putting 24v flanges on the custom exhaust is probably the easiest part. It is quite the project.
Alfa Romeo è sempre Alfa Romeo
They liked the barnyard idea from horizon so much they made it into a real thing!
Is this at Road Atlanta? One of your track shots looks like T10a and 10b. Also looks like you're in the Chin Track Days inspection area of the tower paddock, and I can see what looks like the Chalet in the background.
I frequent Road Atlanta in my Giulia Quadrifoglio. I'm an Alfa NUT!
The 156, and the 147is 5x98 too :)
Nice car but try to find a gtv6 24 valve motor and you can get close to 500 hp out of it. Then it becomes a different animal., over all nice job buddy.
156 Hp on the 2.5 original, 180 HP on the 3.0. 232 HP on the 3.2, 280 HP on a Gleich mod engine
Talk Scotto into loaning Danger Dan for an AutoFocus.
Oooo any word on that Fit in the background?
