  • I just found out that our county had a tax on horses and cows. If we want a family milk cow, we may have to pay the local tax collector for the privilege to own one.

    I am in California and used to work in a feed store. If we sold a bale of hay to someone with a horse, it was taxed(luxury), If it was for a cow, considered food, no tax. If we sold rabbit food and it was for bunnies(luxury) it would be taxed, if it was for rabbits(food), no tax. We had our own “system”, everyone had horses for pulling plows, cows were for food and rabbits were in the food category, the assessor needed to make the distinction. They never came around. Worked very well, easy for us, customer happy, assessor none the wiser.

      Taxing people who have capacity to pay is how governments pay for things like roads that everyone or at least most people need. It's not the tax that is the problem - it's when they tax people who can't afford it, because the people who can afford to pay a lot more tax can also afford to pay accountants or just bribe politicians to let them avoid paying taxes.

    If you have sales tax in your area, show them the bill and taxes you paid for the building material to build the shed, home, barn, etc. I don't know how a house is considered income generating. Cows are for your personal fresh meat and milk. If you had a dairy farm, it could be taxable income. But, for personal use such as a vegetable garden, animals are not taxable. Property taxes is the plot of land that you own, not the persons, houses, papers, and effects.

    • @miscellaneousme
      @miscellaneousme  17 дней назад

      @@georgeh431 The house is part of “real” taxes which is separate from “personal property” taxes. Real taxes would include: house and any improvements to the property that increase its value (shed, barn, paved road, etc.)
      Personal property is: trailer, cars, ATV, livestock, etc.
      I spoke with the tax assessor again and she said all male cows of a mature age (which she didn’t know what the age technically was) were taxable. They just trust the farmers to declare how many bulls of mature age they have and tax them accordingly. I asked would one dairy cow be therefore exempt? And she said “no”, that even one dairy cow is taxed as personal property even though it is not male. She also said laying hens are taxed, but couldn’t find that in the document that tells what our tax code is (I read the entire document; it says all livestock is taxable, but my state may or may not make a distinction between livestock and poultry. It is unclear).
      A veggie garden is not taxable, however if I were to run a business selling garden goods, I am pretty sure they’d find a way to tax that.
      The one silver lining is that she told me we do get a $500 homestead tax credit when we have a house. Once we build, we need to go in the office, fill out a form, and we’ll have $500 taken off our yearly tax bill.

Getting a warrent to search your property for having property would be laughed out of any court in this land. Say no to extortion.

  • @tealkerberus748

    The only thing it is just to tax is the capacity to pay. If you sell a cow, that's income, and you should be taxed on that income. Taxing an "asset" that isn't generating income is just a sideways way to force low-income people out of owning assets that might make their life easier - like a cow that makes milk for the family to drink but isn't generating cash income. Or land taxes on a family home they've inherited when nobody in the family has had the income that is typical for that area in the past hundred years. Being taxed on the perceived sale value of something you're not selling is just theft.
    Taxing expenditure is another valid way to tax people, because you can't spend money unless you have income, and it's a way to tax undeclared income such as people who work for cash in hand. A balance between income tax and expenditure tax is a good plan.

    • @miscellaneousme
      @miscellaneousme  15 дней назад

      @@tealkerberus748 That’s a great point that taxing assets people aren’t making money from making no sense. I am not entirely familiar with alternatives to taxation, as that is something I need to explore further. I understand that taxation does pay for public roads, the fire dept, the police dept, public parks, etc, and I’m so grateful for those things.
      Maybe (big “maybe”) I’d be more happy with taxation if it was limited to services like those and I could see the gov wasn’t spending it on things that are completely inappropriate like foreign powers or companies that have no business getting our tax dollars. And the ridiculous salaries of people who are supposedly representing us.
      In any case, it needs to be completely reformed, but corruption and greed are insidious weeds that aren’t easily uprooted. At least not without a whole lot of upset to the surrounding ground (I.e. war or some such event).
      Just my two (admittedly very uninformed) cents. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @tealkerberus748
      @tealkerberus748 14 дней назад

      @@miscellaneousme The alternative to taxation is for the government to own a bunch of income-producing assets of its own. But the easy assets for governments to own are things like gas fields that we really don't want the government to depend on for income, because what we want is for the government to shut down fossil fuels.
      Also, the "no taxation without representation" thing goes both ways - our right to a say in how the government spends our money derives from the fact that that's our taxes they're spending.
      So we need every citizen to be paying tax .. it just needs to be tax levied on the basis of the individual's capacity to pay, so that it doesn't cause injustice like forcing someone to sell their home because they can't afford the taxes they're being charged on it.

      @@raymondlong3024 Yes, I did know I’d have to pay property taxes. I didn’t realize that they increase the property taxes for things like paved roads, garden sheds, and whatever else falls under the umbrella of “property improvement”. It makes sense now (I still think it is wrong for them to do that), but I didn’t know all the things that increase my tax bill until I called the tax collector and got specifics.

      some states have ported the professional farmer taxation over to the hobbiest side. because you have the opportunity to sell something, defacto a business.. unfortunately, it takes a mass of people to push back the crazy and most of us are too busy to bring normalcy to governance.

      2 cows will allow you to have milk year around (one calf every six months). Depending on the size of your family 3 or 4 cows is probably a very sensible number. ADDITIONALLY, you can freeze-dry excess milk and keep it in hermetically sealed containers in you larder -- for, like, decades. Butter can be pressure canned and is shelf-stable for years.
      The only fly in this ointment is, of course, all the baby cows. If you sell them, then that's income I suppose. But, as someone already mentioned, It does cost something to maintain living assets (whether animal, vegetable, insect, bacteria or whatever else) and those costs can be deducted (I assume -- definitely not a tax advisor here). As long as you walk that fine liine between income and outlay, you're probably fine.

    I don't see how anyone can be surprised by this! People don't know this stuff, that is the only possible way they can keep voting for democrats.

      @@davidphillips3953 I agree with your point that it must be ignorance to the reality that causes people to make poor decisions when electing representatives.
      I wasn’t surprised that I have to pay tax in general, as taxes are a given. I was surprised as to the specifics of what increases my property taxes (I.e. paved road and a small garden shed) and things that are taxed as personal property like cows and horses.
