- Back in the 1980s I lived in Connecticut. I applied to go on Tic Tac Toe because it looked so easy. I flew to California, and they sent me to The Joker's Wild. I wasn't familiar with it, but what the heck. I had to fly to California two more times, as the interviews progressed, until finally I got the call. The show has been on a VHS tape since the 1980s, I just had the tapes transferred to a hard drive....... so the quality could be better. Not sure what I was thinking with that hairstyle. For those who don't know, a week's worth of shows are taped in one day. I say that because you start at around 9 am and by the time 7 pm comes, no food since 8 am, just changing clothes between "days" and your brain starts to shut down. The question I lost on, was so easy..... but I'm not sure I could have remembered my name.

Amazing. You brought up in that interview how contestants are nervous when they're on the show. I've seen many Price is Right contestants seem nervous when they made it on stage.
While I was waiting to go on, a contestant was asked what the 50th state is. To me, there are two obvious possibilities. The first contestant guessed... Alaska. Nope. Now it was the next contestant's time to guess...... she said, "Puerto Rico." Believe me, no one who got on that show isn't smart, the test to get on is really hard. I chalked that answer up to nerves........ lights, cameras and and audience would make anyone nervous.

Both Tic Tac Dough and Joker's Wild were produced by Jack Barry & Dan Enright. It's likely they recycled music cues among their shows. Goodson-Todman was definitely known for doing so.
@@lakebay972 Yeah, they used the same music for both shows. The music used to introduce prizes in the bonus games were the same too.

I was only 5 when these aired, but I remember watching TJW & TTD quite avidly because I was a little game show geek even back then. 😸 Thank you for taking me back to that wonderful time, and congratulations on your amazing run!

Congratulations on your winning streak, Hunter. This may have aired just a tad bit before my time, but I tend to find game shows from around this period fascinating for some reason. Despite not knowing much about the show before going on it, you did a great job. 👍👍

As much as I loved this show as a kid, the devil always scared me to death. It mainly came from the zoom in shot during ticket plugs and end credits. I probably would’ve stopped at 8 or 900 just so I didn’t have to see the devil.
LOL, that's cute. This Devil was not yet invented when I was a kid.

Thanks for sharing this montage. I was just a kid when this version of the show was on the air and I caught it on the Kansas City superstation whenever I could. I might've even watched this first run, though I don't remember. Anyway, one of my favorite shows.

I don't know, when it was over they told me I was the all time top woman winner and in the top 5 all time. That record may not have stood though.
@@hunterhampton2043 Eileen Jason won over $50K in regular game winnings in 1979 and then won the $250K TofC in Fall 1979. She was the highest female winner in regular games, and at the time the highest winner in regular games. However,Joe Dunn in early 1983 won $66,200 and had to retire because from 1981-84, Joker aired on WCBS NYC, so they had to abide by CBS rules and regulations, and he was allowed to keep only $50K. They stopped doing yearly TofCs after 1980 because of that.

Thanks for posting, Hunter. I always wondered if they had off to Jacks left a list of the categories on a card so the contestant can easily recall them if they decided to go “off-the board”. Can you advise?
I don't remember that at all, I suspect if I went off the board I could simply ask Jack to remind me what other categories that they have. I'm trying to think which categories would make me do that. Probably The Bible, Opera and Algebra... hahaha
Yes, (according to a former contestant I knew) there was a cue card of the list of categories. He was on during the Bill Cullen version; yet, it was all basically the same.

most of Jack Berry and Dan Enright shows were question based shows where the host asked a question the contenstant answered it and either got points or Money

I love seeing people use the Jokers properly! When backstage were you able to see the Joker machine contraption and how it worked? I've read descriptions but can't wrap my head around it 😃
No, I don't think so, or if I did I don't remember. After every show I had to run back, change my outfit and run back in. If I had to go to the bathroom, I had an escort to make sure no one was giving me questions I suppose.

anyway they were heavily-modified slide projectors. here's one of the stage managers, Lou Schneider, describing how the machine worked:
"The slides were mounted on three flat wheels that spun through modified Kodak Carousel slide projectors with slots cut in them so that the spinning wheel could pass the slides between the light and lens. The wheels themselves were mounted on a frame to the side of each projector and were spun by an electric solenoid when the contestant pulled the handle. At pre-set times another solenoid would extend an arm and catch a matching notch in the wheel to stop the wheel at a slide. There was no sensing of where the wheel was at any moment so the chance of a particular slide coming up was entirely random. Likewise, the machine operator did not spin the wheels by hand or otherwise touch the machine during the course of the game. All the operator did was control the slide machine lamps and the lights around the outside of each window that signified matching categories. There were another two projectors, standard Kodak Carousels, that fed a smaller rear projection screen behind the host's position. These were used to display the categories of questions as Jack read them off at the beginning of each round."
That was really interesting, I had enough to think about when I was on, and frankly never gave the mechanicals any attention. Thank you for that easy to understand explanation. @@herestoyoudoc

Interestingly enough I think the art from the Snoop Dogg version blended both Snoop's aesthetic and the old-school category art. It is a pretty well-done remake of the show if a bit irreverent--I think Barry & Enright would approve but it would take them some time to come around 🤣

YES!!! LOL. It came to my house on a flatbed, and they put it in the driveway. I put a classified ad in the paper, said I won it on a game show, and it was sold immediately. I never even sat in it. I remember it was white.
Actress Hunter Tylo is also Native Cherokee.
Interesting, I remember when she changed her name to Hunter, in the middle of her run on a soap opera. I always wondered if she saw one of my head shots, that I sent to all the soap casting departments, and got the inspiration to change hers. I think Hunter was her middle name. That was a long time ago, so I could be off.

Congratulations on such an amazing run on TJW. Can you tell us more about the test you had to take?
Yes, the test was 100 questions, multiple choice, three choices for each question. The questions were all hard, and all three answers looked right.... it was really hard. There were maybe 50 people taking the test, about may 6 of us came back after lunch. The topics were so varied, sports, movies, geography, politics, books, history... I could go on and on. I don't actually know what my score was, but clearly I passed.
After lunch those of us who passed came back and we simply has to stand up in front of the others and talk about ourselves. then we were done.
I got a call to come back, which I did. The next interview was with the producer's son, Jack's son. Very handsome, very charming...... we had a nice chat.... then everyone who had made it that far came back and we actually played the game against each other. Then I went back home.
Then I got the call.
You should have left in the audience games. Those were fun!

Against the Devil, you won twice, lost once, and walked away 4 times. Smart moves you made there.
Thanks, I walked away when I did because I didn't want to risk 800 to 900 dollars for prizes that didn't interest me. Broyhill dining rooms etc.

Here would have been my strategy. If the prizes weren’t appealing to me I would have spun three times and stopped after that. That was some well employed strategy hunter. I was a big jokers wild watcher in the 70s and 80s

Now that you mention it, I see it. I used to be told, often, that looked like Hot Lips Houlihan, from MASH.
@@hunterhampton2043 One actress I think whom you really looked like was Evelyn from the movie "A League of Our Own"; she was the one whom Tom Hanks scolds and tells her "There's no crying in baseball." She had that little boy who kept heckling opposing players and fans "You're gonna lose! You're gonna lose!"; It's probably one of the best baseball-themed movies ever made.
@1:05:42 a hilarious procession of mechanical errors on the score display .. $2000, $20 0, $200, $20, $200, then inexplicably $400 down to $325 (still off by $25 🤣) .. must've been lots of yelling and panicking and button-pressing back there!
Hey,Hunter! How you enjoyed your prizes & what you doing now?
My favorite prize was the trip to Mazatlan, Mexico. The flights, the hotel and ALL meals. Mazatlan is the self proclaimed shrimp capital of the world, and the eating is good, and the beaches are beautiful there. I sold the car before I ever even drove it. I donated the trampoline locally.... Shortly after I was on the show I married the guy in the audience, and we moved and bought a horse farm. I live in Florida now, after living in an Airstream trailer and traveling the US for 15 years, I settled here. I foster and adopt old dogs now...... thanks for asking.
Hunter you were a very gracious champion. Your game Trivia Puzzle looks similar to Trivial Pursuit. Was Trivial Pursuit released commercially before your game, Trivial Puzzle?
Yes, Trivial Pursuit was first. I was contacted by American Puzzle Factory to come up with a similar game that used puzzles. I did that and made up the questions. The most fun thing about it was I went on a morning radio show in Cincinnati, WEBN, and asked the questions and listeners called it. The host was a good friend, and we laughed and talked for 4 hours. People said they were late for work because they got to their parking lots but didn't want to get out of their car.

I wanna be honest with you ma'am I used to watch the joker's wild back in the 80s I'm an 80s kid I remember the good old days period especially I like watching jack berry Bill Cullen hist the show. Do you have any more episodes of the joker's wild as a request
I do not, I just taped myself. Surely if you search You tube there will be others.

You was terrific on The Joker's Wild as a game show contestant on the show at KCOP-TV Studios with the legendary Mr. Jack Barry who was the best game show host giving away a bunch of prizes and vacation trips back then until the legendary Mr. Bill Cullen succeeded him about a year later.

No, it took way longer. I applied in the spring. They gave me an appointment to come test. Then a 100 question test, then people who passed the test came back after lunch and tested some more. Then I went back to Connecticut. They called and I went back for a second round of tests then.... I forget if I flew back a third time. Then it was summer break, so I heard nothing, then they called back in the fall, September or October, and I flew out and played. I believe it was shown in December.
@@hunterhampton2043 very cool! Some contestants appear on other game shows, did you? I’ve seen some contestants play both on The Joker’s Wild and Tic Tac Dough, but a year or so apart. Sounds like a good lifetime memory for you. Was Jack Barry as nice off camera and between takings?
@@jokerswildfan1972 He was nice, he told me what to say about myself and set him up for jokes.... like the go-go dancer joke. I was also on The Match Game, but the orginal that had two stars, each contestant had their own star. Mine was Mitch Miller, he was a dog, putting his hand on my thigh, asking me out. I was at most 21 years old, I'm going to say it was 1967. The other contestant's star was a blonde actress from the 1940s. She was in a lot of movies, I can't think of her name. She was past her prime, but still beautiful with the bluest eyes. I complimented her eyes, and she looked at me like a turd in a swimming pool, never said a word.. I won both games, got a Goodson Todman check in the mail for $252.00. LOL
@@hunterhampton2043 I think the actress was Jane Powell because reference guides say she did the show with Mitch Miller the week of March 5, 1968. When Mitch did the show in 67, he only appeared with Abby Dalton (much younger) and Phyllis Diller. Unfortunately almost all the episodes of the 60s version don't exist. I was raised in NYC, in Manhattan. My parents had a summer house in Greenwich, so I spent summers in Greenwich..... when I grew up I got a place in South Norwalk.... When I was on the show I lived in SoNo.

So how successful were you in the acting profession?
Not very. I was an extra in three movies, The World According to Garp, Yes Giorgio and The Tempest... Giorgio and Tempest were shot in NYC, Garp in NJ. Then I got a lead in an Indie film, which was shot near Hunter Mountain in NY state. It's a long weird story, and ultimately the film never came out. I played one of the leads, and the stunt driver because I was the only one who could drive a stick shift.

Early 80's TJW, awesome! And for some reason, I've always been fascinated by those Mystery question cards on Jack's podium, ever since I first saw this show on GSN.
There's an abnormal amount of technical and hosting goofs here, and I'm only 44 minutes in.
When Jack would goof he was quickly put back on track.
1983-84 season since Jack died at the end of that season and the Natural Triple Jackpot was in play starting that season.
GSN played a total of one episode from this Season, and that was for the 50 Greatest Game Shows countdown in 2006 (rerun in 2007). Pretty unfortunate.
